Straightening out Parental Permissions & Security

I need to clean up permissions & access on a subordinate account.
On my laptop (PowerBook, OSX 10.4.11) I have 3 accounts, one of which is for kids to play on. I set it up to not allow certain things with iChat, Mail, and Safari, and to not allow access to heavy duty applications of no concern to them. Now I want to change some of the permissions, and I have been terribly confused by the options & alternatives. Immediate problem: Safari can't save/create a Bookmarks folder to save book marks in. Who knows why.
There is a machine level security
There is a parental permission (which can be changed IF AND ONLY IF you are in the affected account, AND have the admin name & password, which I do).
there is an instruction in Safari's internal advice that refers to a nonexistent button in Security to turnoff all Parental Controls.
You can prevent writing to things; you can prevent access to applications and maybe folders.
And who knows how much else.
Some of the controls apparently prevent access to 'lower' level files and apps that are needed for functioning. Or prevent creation of new files, that I have no idea how to (temporarily) turn off.
Will someone please tell me where I can go to read a coherent, semi-comprehensive guide to setting and adjusting Parental Controls? What I get from the other posted questions is piecemeal, when it applies, and makes assumptions that apparently I don't have. I'd be happy to reset it all to 'none,' and then reapply as needed. If I knew what "all" was.
How critical is this? Let me tell you, when an eleven year old kid can't get to Safari, you don't have a computer, you have a waste of their time. the snide comments about maybe they should use a Windows machine really, really hurts.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    You might try to see if you can change your security questions. Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account > Password and Security.
    I'm able to do this, others say they need to input answers to their current security questions in order to make changes, I'm inclined to think its worth a try, you don't have anything to lose.

  • How do I straighten out my account?

    We upgraded my wife's phone to a new iPhone, but when we got it and I tried to activate it I ran into issues - the phone (which was connected to our internet router) kept telling me it couldn't connect to the server and I should call the activation phone number. After 5 or 6 times being put on infinite hold, I finally got through to someone who then called her supervisor and between them they activated the new phone. Great, all is well, and the phone works well except that anytime I go online to see about modifying my plan, I get the following message: Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this line of service but have not activated the device yet.  You have the option to change your calling plan after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance. The correct iPhone is shown in the picture but it's grayed out and I can't do anything. Calling customer service just puts me on hold forever. I haven't had these kinds of issues with Verizon in the past and don't know why they're starting now, but I'd really like to get my account straightened out.

    OK, this is exactly what happened:
    The Verizon Wireless site would allow me to order a new phone at a reduced cost a month before the contract expired, but 2 weeks later it wouldn't allow me to do that anymore. So I went direct to the Apple site and it checked with Verizon and came back and said I qualified to get the phone for $99. So I placed an order. The phone came 3 days later, on schedule. It was Friday afternoon. That night I started it up and connected it to my wifi. It then said it could not connect to the server and I should try again. There was nothing wrong with the wifi since I had 3 other things using it at the time. I tried to activate it by going to the Verizon site but it just showed my wife's old phone grayed out with a message that I had to activate the new phone first. Finally the iPhone got through to the server and all seemed well. It then told me I had to finalize the activation by calling an activation phone number. After a few tries I got through. The woman said she would help but then said something was wrong and she got her supervisor. He got on the phone and said he would fix it, and after a minute or 2 the activation took hold and all was well. Since then the phone has performed well, but when I went to the web site I couldn't even see my plan details. I tried a couple more times and got nowhere, and each time I called customer service after listening to the computer for a while trying to sell me things, I would choose an option and get put on hold and finally would give up. That's when I posted my note. Perhaps things are straightened out now, I don't know, but after 20 years with Verizon Wireless I wasn't expecting all these problems.
    Thanks for helping.

    How to find out my forgotton security questions answers

    Reset Security Questions
    Frequently asked questions about Apple ID
    Manage My Apple ID
    Or you can email iTunes Support at iTunes Store Support.
    If all else fails:
      1. Go to: Apple Express Lane;
      2. Under Product Categories choose iTunes;
      3. Then choose iTunes Store;
      4. Then choose Account Management;
      5. Now choose iTunes Store Security and answer the bullet questions, then click
          Continue;
      6. Sign in with your Apple ID and press Continue;
      7. Under Contact Options fill out the information and advise iTunes that you would
          like your security/challenge questions reset;
      8. Click Send/Continue.
    You should get a response within 24 hours by email.
    In the event you are unsuccessful then contact AppleCare - Contacting Apple for support and service.
    Another user had success doing the following:
    I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
    Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
          tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
          "done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
          Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
          should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
          selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
          should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
    It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
    Good Luck friends!

  • Out of Perm space

    I'm getting out of perm space in an uncertain condition.
    The problem can be reproduce with all those settings:
    Tomcat 4.1.27 , J2SDK 1.4.1_02 , SunOS 5.8 sparc.
    Tomcat 4.1.27 , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
    Tomcat 5.0.16 , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
    Tomcat 5.0.16 , J2SDK 1.5.0-beta , Windows 2000 pro.
    Resin 3.0.5 , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
    oc4j 10g (9.0.4) , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
    I've used VisualGC to monitor the Memory used by the JVM.
    The problem is hard to reproduce but occur when class contained inside a war file (WEB-INF/lib or WEB-INF/classes) are loaded into a classloader.
    Normally when a web application is loaded into an servlet container a new classloader is created and the class from WEB-INF/lib and WEB-INF/classes are loaded into the classloader when needed. When a class is loaded the code and symbols are stored into the permanent space. Normally when the classloader is garbage collected, the perm space are release.
    The problem occur for certain web application. When some classes are loaded into the classloader a certain condition prevent the JVM from flagged the classloader as collectable. Those class are not constant. I've used the -verbose JVM option to see the class loaded and found nothing in common between the problematic .war files. This problem leads to an increase of the Perm Space size on each reload of the guilty web application. And this leads to some OutOfMemoryError when the perm space reach 64M (this is the default). Increasing the Perm Space is just a temporary solution since the JVM will have to be shutdown and restarted when the Perm Space is full.
    My next step is to try other JVM implementation.
    Thanks for any help.

    I can't figure out how a class can hold that reference. The problem can be reproduced inside a web application that use sun's web service developper pack. Here's a short description of the application.
    I've created a smaller application of the original which is a simple servlet that only have a init() method.
    Inside the init method I create a client stub with the scope local to init() method. So at this time the classloader loads a couple of classes inside the classloader related with a client jar that contain stub created with wscompile (a tool from the web sevice developper pack used to create soap client stubs) and jaxrpc-impl.jar.
    The problem is not just related to this application it can be reproduce with another app that use struts (a framework for building web presentation).
    The problem came up when we use the servlet container with a bigger application that was in development that use sun's soap implementation. After for example ~ 12 reloads (which means unreference the classloader and creating a new one) of the application the JVM start to throw OutOfMemoryError.
    If I increase the size of the Perm generation it only push back the problem.

  • How do I straighten out a leaningn image

    Please tell me how to straighten out a leaning image in photoshop? Thanks.

    Quickest way? If using Photoshop CC: Click the Crop Tool. Hover your mouse a little outside one of the corners of your image. Click and drag in the appropriate direction. You can also use the "straighten" option on the option bar to, say, draw a line where it needs to be horizontal (or vertical).

    Is there a way to find out what your security question answer is?

    Amazing,  I can't find out what app on my phone just ran 388mb of data xfer at 2:44am yesterday while I'm sound asleep yet the LE types can subpoena and search warrant anything I do online and with who and for how long.  Verizon list who I receive phone calls from and make calls to and from where I receive messages and to whom/where I text but can't tell me squat about something that is eating up band width.  I'm sure it's probably some app that is running in the background on my phone. I've just got to figure out what it is and kill it.  I want to drop (cause I don't use it, it's slower than a dial up 1200bps modem)my data plans and save about $50 a month.

  • Warning popup for jnlp and all-permissions security, recent java update

    We have a java program running with java webstart. The jnlp includes the all-permissions security level.
    All jar files have a manifest with Permissions: all-permissions and all jar files are signed with our trusted certificate.
    When the program is started we get a popup saying something like:
    "This application will run with unrestricted access which may put your computer and personal information at risk. Run this application only if you trust the locations and publisher above."
    This popup is coming _everytime_ the program is started... which is very annoying for the user and causes support issues for the organization.
    This has started to happen in the recent java update. First the program did not start at all until we included the Permission attribute in every jar's manifest.
    How can we get rid of this popup?
    Best regards,
    Emil

    If we add the following to the manifest of the jar files:
    Permissions: all-permission
    Application-Library-Allowable-Codebase: *
    Caller-Allowable-Codebase: *
    It seems like the "checkbox" to only show the warning message once is back again (without those two last lines above in the manifest there is no checkbox at all).

    are you talking about the passcode to unlock the phone? if you forgot it there is no way to recover it, you'll have to restore the phone on the same computer you usually sync it with.

    Apple's policy on sales of digital content is that all sales are final. If however you wish to appeal to Apple, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History on your computer.
    Currently, if your purchase happens to be your most recent purchase you will not be redirected to the report form, in this case use the report a problem option from the invoice that was emailed to you.

    What do I do to straighten out this problem: When I try to access Firefox after I've logged out of a previous session I get a msg that Firefox is still running and I have to restart the computer in order to access internet...

    All you need to do is wait. While Firefox appears closed, it's not. It doing house cleaning. Cleaning out cookies and cache. How long it takes depends upon how much garbage you have collected.
    If you start the Task Manager and open the Process window, you will be able to see when Firefox has finished up and closed down.
    If you forced Firefox to close using the task manager, then the house keeping process seems to freeze up.
    Also, as you've already found out from the above link, some programs and plugins will prevent Firefox from closing properly. I've found this less common then simply being in a hurry. But you need to also consider it.

  • Can anyone help to straighten out my technet account?

    Can anyone help to straighten out my technet account?
    I had a technet account as 'markfilipak'. The other day I logged in and tried to "Ask a question". As soon as I clicked "Ask a question", technet demanded that I create a profile. Hmmm ...I thought I already had one. Ah, well, I gave
    my "Display Name" as 'markfilipak', but technet said it was already in use. (Of course it was in use... by me!). So just to get around that, for "Display Name" I entered 'markfilipak-'.
    Now I have no history, zero credits, and it appears I just joined.
    Can anyone there help to get this fixed?
    Thank You.

    I did search and came up with nothing. I'd still send an email to fissues [at] microsoft [dot] com
    On the email notice; that wouldn't happen unless you setup an alert email address on your new profile.

  • Straightening out a photo of a document

    I've got a document that is photographed very poorly. It's a 19th Century ledger book. I need to straighten it out. I've fussed with perspective, warp, distort and all the crude image manipulation tools but it's not really getting perfect. Anyway to "map" an image so that I can straighten out a more complicated document?
    Thanks,
    Seth

    OK, now I see what you're talking about.
    I'd start first with Filter - Lens Correction to straighten out the slight pincushion distortion and some of the vignetting.  Dodging to even out light and dark spots...  Curves to lighten things up and increase contrast...
    If that's not enough, to get the curvature out of the page will be more difficult.  I'm thinking something like Puppet Warp...  That takes some finesse, but can help somewhat straighten out the lines.  Plus a bit more evening out of the luminance, Curves, Hue/Sat...
    I don't know what level of perfection you're looking to achieve.  Historically the smudge marks on the paper might be interesting.

  • Is it possible to straighten out a slightly wavy or distorted picture?

    Most image editing software has ways of rotating and resizing pictures, but does photoshop Elements 8 have the ability to straighten out a wavy or distorted picture. I have a exaggerated example below of what I mean. The real problem is I need to straighten out a large scanned logo picture I got off a shirt that is not perfectly straight (You know, because a cotton shirt is not solid). One side is longer,  several angles are not square, and parts are wavy and not straight. Is there any way to fix this??

    I can't say how good the result would be but you could try using the liquefy filter. If the shirt is really bunched up, you'll probably end up with some stretching. You may have to copy over some good shirt material to cover any stretching that occurs.
    You might also look at the transform tool...particularly distort.
    If neither of these work, you might try downloading a trial of Photoshop (assuming you haven't in the past) and try using it's transform tool that includes warp. (It's grid looks much like your illustration.)
