Strange activity monitor display

Since going to Lion, I have a strange occurance with the activity monitor at times. The area below the process list will change to a black background and sometimes the black will cover some of the indicators. Sometimes only part of that area will turn black. Other times I get odd lines, like the single black line that just showed up. Earlier it was some red lines.
The only sure way to get rid of it is to restart. It seems to come around when I am having problems with Safari. I have not had this problem with any other displays other than the activity monitor.
It may or may not be related, but I also get two tiney rectangles that show up at various place on the display form time to time. Moving the display by scrolling or moving a window will make them go away. Sometimes they go away by themselves.

Yes, I noticed too the new category of "File Cache".  That might be masking the real memory usage and making it harder for us to compare Mavericks to Mountain Lion.  So we might be comparing apples to oranges...  I, too, am showing 0 swap and that, as you say, is a good thing.
This might also explain why they did away with the Memory pie chart that I used to use as my dock icon so I could instantly see my memory usage...  Perhaps with File Cache in this mix, it would make no sense to show that as a pie chart...  Who knows...??
thanks  bob...

  • "Simple" question about Activity Monitor

When Activity Monitor displays percentages, is that percentages relative to what else is running, or is that percentage of the CPU's processing capacity? Something that is using up 30-40% of the CPU's processing capacity is a lot more intense than something that is using 30-40% of the CPU's activity AMONGST the other threads running.
So which is it? Percentage of the CPU's processing CAPABILITY or percentage of what the processor is chewing on right now - regardless of how much more it could chew on.
This will help us decide if our current xserve (1G, 1CPU, G4) is adequate for our needs or we're constantly maxing out the processor and need to look for a faster server. I don't want to replace an older, but still adequate system just because newer is obviously faster.

It's entirely possible for a process to use more than 100% of a CPU.
In the case of a dual-CPU machine you could use up to 200% (100% x 2 CPUs).
    In the case of a quad-core machine (2 x dual-core CPUs) you could see up to 400% (100% x 4 cores).
An 8-core server could see up to 800%
You see, the 100% mark is based on each CPU core, not all cores combined. I guess that wasn't clear in my earlier response.

  • Why does Activity Monitor show four processors on my MacBook Pro (Core 2 duo i5)?

My Activity Monitor displays four processors despite System Info showing only two. Any idea why that is? Nature of the i5 chip??

  • CMYK images: strange monitor display & and printing

I tried the way Pages 2 handles CMYK images today and found out some strange things.
    My problem: monitor display
CMYK .jpg files are displayed inverted on screen like a negative - black is white and white is black. Layouting basicly rendered useless. Is there a work arround ?
    Solved: Printing
For printing there are at least two ways to get a decent result. Here my findings:
    - Any color printers
"Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Standard" => CMYK images get converted to RGB
"Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Printer specific" => CMYK images stay in CMYK if printer is able to print CMYK
    - use "Save to PDF" within printing dialog
Same as above, profiles tagged to images stay correct
    - Adobe Acrobat Distiller
Same as above, but PDF looses recognizeable profile information. PDF workflow software does not recognize "SWOP" or "ISOcoated" by name but has "Embedded Adobe Postscript CRD Profile" instead which will create problems in workflow processing.
    - Exporting "File - Export - PDF"
Profiles stay intact and are handled correctly.

Thanks Noel for the reply. Hopefully  this will help.
This is how the file should look like.
This is how the file usually displays.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Activity Monitor Acting Very Strangely

For some odd reason Activity Monitor is not showing all processes running under all process view. Won't display Camino, Safari, or Firefox when they are clearly open and running, it's not even displaying itself!
Tried a logout/login, restart, ran TechTool-passed everything, verified permissions and Disk... everything is fine. Still nothing.
Really confused... Any ideas on this would be great.

    Try Trashing the 'com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist' file.
    The path is: /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences
    Good luck,

  • Activity Monitor not displaying processes or anything...

    Hey guys,
My Activity Monitor (10.5.1) is not displaying ANY processes, in any of the tabs (system, CPU, etc.). I don't know why- I have a 2.16Ghz 24" iMac (previous iteration).
I did just add a 2gb stick of RAM (booted fine- everything BAR this monitor app is running perfectly). It has 3gb RAM total (previously had 2x1GB sticks). OSX System Profile displays it as 3GB and reads it properly.
Does anyone know why this is playing up, or what I can do? I have AppleCare so I'll call them tomorrow, but thought I'd see if anybody else incurred this problem.
    Thanks!
    Kendal.

  • Os x Mavericks - Activity Monitor won't display

after I upgraded my Mac Mini to Mavericks, I am unable to display the Activity Monitor.  I have run the disk utility to repair permissions, and I've verified the drive.   I've looked in the console for any error messages related to the launch of Activity Monitor and found none.  The top menu bar for the activity monitor appears, and I can select the pull-down menus.  My Macbook Air successfully upgraded to Mavericks, and the activity monitor works there.
Can anyone offer some help on this?  Thanks.

I've signed on with two different user id's and the activity monitor works perfectly.  It must be something in this particular user id.   Also, when I click on the Finder icon, the top bar greys out, but I can go to it and select "file - new finder window" and I get the finder window.  What should I look for?

  • Activity Monitor: activites created before upgrade not displayed

    Hi experts,
After upgrade from CRM4 to CRM7, the activity monitor (tcode S_AE2_89000019) is not working proprely. After several tests and analysis, we came to the conclusion that the logical database CRMLDB_ACT_MON used by the SAP Query of the Activity monitor is not fetching all results.
It seems that activities created after upgrade are well fetched. Old activities are not fetched
Has someone experimented the same problem?
Is there a specific action to perform on logical databases after upgrade?
Thanks in advance for your help

    Hi Manfred,
Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately we haven't upgraded to Web UI yet..
I found the solution, I'm posting it just in case someone else is facing the same problem: CRMD_ORDER_INDEX is a table that consolidate orders data in order to make reports faster in CRM. This table is not updated after Upgrade, you need to run the program CRM_INDEX_REBUILD to have this table updated.
Many reports us this table. This report update data in new and obsolete tables as well (BUT021 and BUT021_FS)

  • Activity monitor CPU history now shows single graph in Floating window - how to restore display of all eight (8) cores?

Since restarting, the Activity monitor floating CPU history Window now shows all eight cores collapsed into one. This is NOT the behavior I expected after doing some research and finding this article OS X: Activity Monitor shows one CPU Usage graph on systems with more than four cores - Apple Support
Not a show stopper but I've been investigating performance issues on a new machine and this "new" behavior has me flummoxed and suspecting a newbie error.
    Thanks!

Well, after a few more reboots and a therapeutic OS X 10.10.3 reinstall - troubleshooting some really sick performance issues. This problem has gone away. I am no longer staring a beachballs on my 8 core mini with 16GB RAM and an SSD boot drive. Should be good for a while :-)

  • Updated to Mavericks. Now theres tons of activity in my terminal and my activity monitor doesn't seem normal. I want to think someone's hacking me, but i need experienced help please!

I spent all night trying to fix this. It seems to me that someone has been trying to hack into my system with all of the random codes/lines in my terminal and i have all of his foreign IP addresses. And now i get this strange message that popped up in my terminal. Idk what it entirely means? I would very appreciate if someone could just walk me through this. Thank you very much.
First time poster. I have Macbook Pro. OSX. Just downloaded the new mavericks. I'm i have my firewall on. I stay secure. I run Netbarrier, Virusbarrier, IdentityScrubber.
I know something is a little odd or just doesn't make since about my activity monitor. Then my WiFi was hacked last night and this person was writing tons lines of commands/codes that i found in my terminal and my activity monitor doesn't look normal,  and I've only been a mac owner for about a year now and i'm learning more and more but while trying to figure out what was going on this message popped up which concerned me the most. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks guys. I have my terminal full of his foreign ip addresses i noticed, and a lot of other commands and lines he wrote out that i definitely did not type myself. Can anyone give me a hand on this? Thanks

haha, so now i'm thinking. I'm learning the terminal as fast as i can but there are several lines of codes and commands in there that throws up red flags to me that i don't fully understand. It just looks fishy too me. It would be highly appreciated if someone could just check this out just to tell me that i don't need to worry about it. Or point me in the right direction. I just feel un easy about this. ha.

  • Mail slows to a trickle and then freezes - Activity Monitor shows all OK

I've been having this issue recently where I will be typing an email and I notice I begin to outpace Mail's ability to display the letters I am typing until finally it stops altogether.
At this point Mail becomes almost completely unresponsive. I can still click on the email modal window in question and move it around, but I can't access the Mail main window or click buttons and the menu bar doesn't come up.
The weird thing is that Activity Monitor appears to think that everything is kosher. No CPU spikes, no memory issues, no excessive writing, and no network log jams. So it actually never displays the message "Application Unresponsive" as one would normally expect from an unresponsive app.
The console messages that appear at this time are:
    Jul 1 10:37:16 Mac-Pro Mail[81954]: F4MUpdateCheck: Connection failed! Error - bad URL (null)
    Jul 1 10:37:21: --- last message repeated 2 times ---

I thought F4M was Flip 4 Mac, but I have no idea why that would be tied to a Mail process.
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome on troubleshooting this!
    Thanks in advance,
    Richard

    Hello Richard:
I have never experienced what you describe so I am fishing a bit.
    Try rebuilding the mailbox(s).
If that does not help, trash the preference file (com.apple.mail.plist) and restart.
One other thought - I have read that Mail will have strange behavior if the mailboxes are too full. However, I have no clue how +"too full"+ is defined.

  • Activity Monitor reports incorrect amount of RAM

I have an early '09 Mac Mini 2.0 Ghz. I bought a 2GB stick from crucial and installed it in the empty slot without a hitch, I was nervous, but ifixit was a great help. If I look at the "About this Mac" screen, it clearly now says 3GB. If I then click look under the system profiler, all is well there also. 1-1GB + 1-2GB for a total of 3. If I open Activity Monitor, under the pie chart where it is supposed to say the total amount of RAM installed on the machine, it says 2.75GB. What gives? This one really has me stumped. Strange thing is that if I add up the "free:" and "used:" from the column on the left, it adds to 3GB.
I check my other Macs, all 4 display the correct amount in activity monitor. 3 of them running Snow Leopard and 1 G4 running Leopard. I called Apple support and the guy I talked to was unsure, but said that I should call Crucial. Called them, and the guy told me he was CERTAIN that the RAM was fine if it was up and running without crashing, which it is. He said it would either not startup, or it would be crashing regularly. I downloaded a RAM testing software, recommended by the crucial guy, called rember. Ran it, and all tests passed.
A few months ago, shortly before installing the RAM, I was given an old G3 iBook. I wanted to put some software on it for my daughter and hooked it up via Target Disk Mode to my Mini. Soon after it was connected, I smelled an electrical fire. The Mini then shut down and the fan spun at max for over an hour, with no response to the power button and the light off. Eventually I unplugged it, then later plugged back in and restarted. It seemed to be working fine. When I tried to hook up a firewire HD, it wouldn't read it. Under system profiler it said "Unable to read Firewire Device" in red (first time I had ever seen color in the profiler!) letters. I took it to the genius bar and the eventually told me the logic board was bad. Week later got it back with a new LB. About a month later Snow Leopard came out and I then added the RAM and installed it. It had previously been running Leopard.
I know that somewhere along the line, there was an update specifically for '09 Mini's that said something to the effect of... to correct an issue with certain Mac Mini's recognizing certain 3rd party RAM. It was a EFI update!?! maybe!?! or some type of ROM update, I think. I installed that update and got the "Successfully installed" dialog box after restart. I am not certain that the "bad" logic board (TDM firewire issue) had anything to do with the RAM, or even if the issue was present before the new logic board.
Would a replacement logic board be the cause? Maybe I had done the ROM update on the Mini's old logic board, but the new one needs to be updated? Does anyone else have these issues with a Mini or even another computer? Or is it a bug in activity monitor?

You have to look at whether the specs state the GPU RAM is shared with main memory or not.
For example, for the latest Mac Minis, the spec states:
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 128MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
    or
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
Compare to the high end iMac which simply states:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
All current Macs use integrated GPUs that use shared main memory RAM for graphics save for iMacs with an NVIDIA GT or ATI Radeon GPU, MacBook Pros with the NVIDIA 9600M GPU, and Mac Pros.
On shared machines Snow Leopard is just more honest by noting that memory used by the GPU is not actually available for use by the OS.

  • Hide fields for activities when they are opened via Activity Monitor

    Hi,
In CRM 5.0, my requirement was to hide a number of fields from activity display via transaction CRMD_ORDER & CIC0 (SAPGUI based transactions). I achieved it by using screen variant. I assigned my screen variant to different transactions (CRMD_ORDER, CIC0 etc.), and things were working fine.
But when I open activity monitoring report (transaction S_AE2_89000019), search for some activities and open an activity by double-clicking in the report, the hidden fields become visible. Although, the transaction being displayed in CRMD_ORDER.
I couldn't enable my transaction variant for transaction S_AE2_89000019, obviously because this is a report transaction which in turn opens activity when we double-click on the grid.
Any idea how to avoid these hidden fields being displayed via S_AE2_89000019?
    Regards,
    Kaushal

    Hey Kaushal,
Let me first inform you the following:
    1) Transaction Variant are associatated to Dialog transactions only......Which means when u call report which eventually refers the same transaction even then the transaction variants is not called....
For the whole transaction variant to workout, you need CALL transaction "  ..."....
    2) The transaction S_AE2_89000019 is not a dialog transaction, its a parameter transaction which eventually calls a report AQZZ/SAPQUERY/SMCRM_REP_ACT1==
3)This report in turn uses the call to FM CRM_1O_CALL_FOREIGN which launches that crmd_order transaction screen  and not crmd_order transaction..
You can enchance that report by creating a z report and inside that z report you can fulfill your requirement..
    Inspire ppl by reqwarding..
    Regards,
    Anand...

  • [SOLVED] "Server is already active for display 0" in Terminals

So far, my searches haven't yielded any solutions to this.
When my system starts, it boots to a console login prompt (no gdm, etc...) and I have 'startx' in my .bashrc to start my desktop. The desktop starts and functions fine (or so it seems).
Problem 1: Anytime I open a Terminal window (or open new tabs inside a Terminal) I am greeted with the following:
    Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
         at http://wiki.x.org
    for help.
    xinit:  Server error.
    Sometimes the last line is:
    xinit:  unexpected signal 2
Usually I just ^C to get a working prompt and go about my business, but this is getting really annoying.
Problem 2: I use Guake terminal and have it set to autostart in my .bashrc, but it doesn't work until I manually open a Terminal window. And if I close that (manually opened) window, Guake stops working. If I open another one manually, it works again...etc. I have a hunch this is related to the first problem.
Any nudges in the right direction would be appreciated.

    In bashrc try something like
    [ -z "$DISPLAY" ] && startx && {sleep 5; DISPLAY=0:0 setsid Guake; }

  • I ended a task on Activity Monitor on my iMac and now my desktop and dock keep restarting?

So, I was on Activity Monitor trying to see how I could speed up my computer and I found this application which was using up a large percentage of my memory so I decided to end it. I can't remember what it was called but now every so often my desktop turns grey and the dock disappears then they both restart themselves. I'm pretty sure it's to do with me ending that task and not a virus. If it is a virus then tell me, if not then does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Sorry didn't mean to press this solved my question, yeah I've restarted it loads of times! It's been happening for a couple of months now it's really strange because it should just restart itself if it's that essential! But it's still not working-.-
