Strange address book behaviour

I was using the spotlight search in the upper right corner of Address book and when I typed in some letters it did not narrow down the listing of names. No matter what I type in it would not change what was displayed. So I restarted the computer. Now when I type in the search part of Address book, each keystroke is repeated twice and it is only happening in Address Book. So if I were to type in Ohio, it displays oohhiioo
Using Snow Leopard 10.6.6. Happened suddenly. The only update in the past day was itunes 10.5.1 but it was updated 2 days ago and the Address book issue just happened in the past hour

Hmmm seemed to solve this myself with a little help from searching here. Found this thread...
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2214807?start=0&tstart=0
After rebuilding the database both issues were solved

  • Strange address book behavior

I'm trying to create an address book group using the method described in http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=153676.
I was able to do this about a week or 10 days ago, but now when I try, AB will not take the dragged addresses from Mail. No little plus sign, and the address bubbles simply snap away and back over to Mail.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the issue? I'm on a Unibody Macbook, with 10.6.1.

ok, good point, thanks. but as the OP says, in leopard you could simply drag a bunch of addresses from the "to" field and drop them onto address book. i don't understand why this feature was removed. I suspect this was not intended and is a bug.

  • Strange Address Book problem where 1st name is duplicated into last name

    Hello
Here's the problem. I use Address Book and I have several entries where two people are listed together; for example, I have "John and Jane." I put "John and Jane" under First Name and leave Last Name blank. However, every few weeks, I get a repetition of the second of the first names into the last names. Thus it reads under first name: "John and Jane" and under Last Name: "Jane." I never typed "Jane" under the Last Name, yet it pops up (and it happens quite often for a lot of the names). I delete the "Last Name," it's fine for a few weeks, then it happens again, and I can't figure out why. I tried to backup the Address Book after fixing the problem, delete what's in the Address Book folder in "Application Support," and then import what I'd backed up; yet the problem persists. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

This is one of those little annoyances that we have to learn to live with (unless Apple decides, at some time at their own convenience to fix it). You could try reminding them at OS X Feedback. Address Book is just not happy with contact cards where there is a first name but no last name. I don't know what happens if you try putting John and Jane in the last name field and leaving the first name blank.
That said, AB is designed for one person per card, so where I have a John X and Jane Y I give them separate cards (apart from anything else they probably have different email addresses and mobile numbers) and link them together with a related names field. If I use AB to print mailing labels it will put "John X and Jane Y" over the shared postal address.

  • Address Book SmartGroup Bugs and Gremlins

I have created a smartgroup (1 of 8) to identify all cards not a member of any group (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1284763). Very strangely, address book hangs every time I click on either and then won't start properly unless I delete "com.apple.AddressBook.plist" in my user library/preferences folder.
    So I have tried:
    1) creating new smart groups: this has just created two more identical smartgroups which hang address book;
    2) reinstalling address book from the leopard disks - no change;
    3) calling applecare where I sadly my response was received by an (level 2) individual whose personal motto was"nothing is possible" - this only happens once in a while - normally there not too bad. He refused to help beyond a) deleting all my data and reinstalling address book, which of course will lose my smartgroup data (of the other working ones), b) a complete time capsule reinstall c) he even refused to transfer me to another "product specialist" (presumably in case they were more helpful) and d) refused to escalate it anywhere.
so I appeal to you good people, if you help me solve this problem, you can wear a badge which says, I'm more helpful than Applecare.
a mobile me sync does not include smartgroups - so that's a no.
is there a way of deleting the now 3 rogue smartgroups without starting address book? I think this will solve the problem efficiently!
    cheers,
    Peter

in view group : I had 2 "iCloud" group, and no "on my mac" group !!
    and prefs, i found 2 icloud accounts : mac.com and me.com
I remember now that I had problems to create the mac.com
So, I've cancelled the me.com from the address book prefs,
Now I have only iCloud (Mac.com) account, but no "on my mac". So i'm not sync ??
In Addresse book prefs, I have iCloud, and OnMyMac, but for that last one, I have only the option of sync with Yahoo or Google
Also other bugs now : When I create a new group, impossible to delete it, and, if I rename it and double-click on it, I see groupe wihout name...

  • Address Book - Weird text field behaviour

In Address Book when I try to edit any text field weird things happen.
When I start typing all the previous characters are repeated with each keystroke - for example typing "Thomas" would become TThThoThomThomaThomas". Pressing the backspace, delete or the ESC key repeats only the keystrokes made, i.e. "Thomas" would be added to the end of "TThThoThomThomaThomas".
If I click into another field and start typing it still remembers all the previous keystrokes and puts all of them in front of the key I just pressed.
Additionally, nothing can be typed in the notes field.
    I've tried deleting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    but that doesn't fix it.
Anything in ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book be the problem?
When I log in a a guest user this behaviour is not present.

It's good that you tried this on a different account. That suggests that the problem exists somewhere in your user account directory. I don't think anything in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ would cause this. Do you have any input managers installed? These might be in ~/Library/Input Managers/ or something like that. I've never installed one myself, so I am not certain where they are. I think if you find one, you can just remove it from that folder by dragging it out, and then restarting Address Book might solve the issue.

  • Address Book behaves very strange

    Hello members and outside viewers,
First thing: My Address Book behaves very strange.
    - After startup, the window freezes. Only if I minimize and click again, works OK. I began used to it, BUT
    - Since yesterday, Addresses gone, disappeared from every entry.
    - Under Preferences » Address Format is uneditable, it has "Item3" in it, unclickable drop down menu.
    - Under Preferences »Template » Add Field several options are grey: "Phone", "Email", "Related Names", "Instant Messaging", "Address".
Please can you help me! I deleted both plist files from Preferences folder and deleted the whole folder under Application Support/AddressBook, also reinstalled Address Book from Leopard DVD, but nothing helped so far.
Second thing: when I invoke Spotlight, and start typing after 2-3 seconds, it quits and also Dock unusable, restarts automatically. Spotlight is useless, it behaves every time like this. Spotlight in Finder windows are OK, system-wide menubar has this error. Also, it was suddenly gone wrong like Address Book. Can I think of some virus?
P.S. (off topic), might helpful to share: very frustating, that registering to Discussions took me over an hour.
    - With Safari 4.03 the "Name" and "AppleID" are blank fields on "Create New User Account", therefore impossible to proceed. ( Error: invalid AppleID. Please login with a different AppleID )
    - With Firefox you can actually see them, but "?" instead of accounted letters.
    - After changing My Info, I finally realised that Apple ID should be complete e-mail address.
    - That means my "visionfresh" account is totally different from "[email protected]" (or me.com, whatever..)
    - Not to mention that I created a new Apple ID, that was also not working.
    - Bottom line: my "[email protected]" account is working also in Safari after editing my Name (replace accented characters), but I could not proceed with the nickname "visionfresh", I chose "matyashuszar".

  • Address Book entries have very strange appearance

Since updating to Leopard, my Address Book entries have a very strange appearance. When I copy and paste them the info is correct, but in the Address Book right-hand window the name (first and last) appears like gobbledigook, as if it was a strange font that is almost like mathematical equations
With my utmost thanks in advance (as ever) if anyone has the answer to this weird problem
    Kind Regards
    Bernard

Thanks a million for taking the trouble to respond Ashka.
I was only reminded of the problem when I opened a web page and saw a similar effect on a couple of lines as I had in my Address Book and having discovered your response, I followed your instructions and on scanning through my fonts, I also turned off "Helvetica Fractions" (as the gobbledigook looked as if it might be fractions). One of these actions seems to have done the trick.
Whilst looking for a particular font a while back, I ended up downloading absolutely hundreds, but it wasn't until I foolishly installed them all that I realised what a mistake I had made, as Word wouldn't even open, as it couldn't cope with the number of fonts. So I had to keep deleting fonts until Word was happy and even now, I still have far too many fonts. I kid myself that I like having so much to choose from, but truth is I am never going to use 90 per cent of them. Moreover, having discovered this problem, I wonder if there are any others in there that are going to cause me problems in the future?
Again, can't thank you enough for your trouble
    Best Regards
    Bernard

  • Strange Problem with Mail & Address Book

    Hi,
I'm having a strange problem with Mail & Address Book.
When I go to compose a new message from Mail and hit the Address button (to show my email addresses), it won't launch the contacts window!

I tried deleting the preferences, re-installing Address Book, also tried creating a new user, again no luck!
    Can somebody help!!!
    Please?!

    Hi dp13.
Do you have any Address Book plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Address Book? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
    ~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins ~/Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.
    <hr>
Did you also reinstall the appropriate Combo Update after reinstalling Address Book?
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Strange problem with nested address book groups

I have a strange problem with iSync. I have created a group On-the-Go in my Address Book that I'm syncing with my phone (Motorola v600). The group consists of three other groups. Let's call them A, B and C.
The problem is that only group C gets synchronized. Contacts from groups A and B disappear from the phone. Strangely, if I select A or B to sync in iSync - they get synchronized just fine. Also, group C, in turn, contains other nested groups, but that does not seem to be a problem.
I played with group names, tried to recreate group A to no avail.
For now, I have added all contacts from A and B to On-the-Go as a workaround, but
it looks like a bug to me.

  • Strange items in Address Book

I have a very strange situation, open Mail to do a new email, to address the email I type in Frank, nothing comes up, but yet I have 4 names with Frank in them. If I try the same thing addressing with Larry it shows all of the Larry's I have. The names show in the address book within the Mail program
Everything is listed last name then first name, I have rebuilt the address's in Address book an have replaced the address book .pilst. This is happening on just one computer, the other works fine, I have copied over the address from one computer to the other.
When typing in the name Frank the wheel just goes round and round
    Any suggestions?
    thanks
    Mike

And does that address correctly populate the To box in the new message composition window?
Would it be possible for me to see that address, as in not a privacy issue? If OK, then Save as Draft, use one click to open it in the Draft mailbox, then with a New Message addressed to me, click on Edit and choose Append Selected Messages.
My address can be found by clicking on my name to the left.

  • Strange problem with auto-fill addresses in mail and address book

There's an entry in my address book (version 4.0.6) that keeps adding a first name to an entry. I keep deleting it and somehow the first name keeps getting added. I suspected that Mail (2.1.3) was using auto-fill or LDAP to take the name it remembered in Mail and put it in Address Book by associating the email address, so I turned off LDAP and auto-fill and the problem still persists.
As an aside, I use mobileme to sync two macs (Address Book) and a pc (Outlook) so I really want to clear up this problem so the phantom entry does not keep getting transfered to all databases.
Should I delete some cache or something? One other problem (unsure if it's related) is that my Mail application always ask for my keychain password on startup - I have tried the keychain repair app and it seemed to work once, though this problem persists, as well.
    Thank you in advance!

Yes. the dot in front makes it invisible.
    Show hidden files...
Open the terminal and type or copy/paste:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
Reverting to the default of NOT showing hidden files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
Reboot or Force Finder quit needed for either change to show.
I'd move them both to the Desktop then reboot, if it works fine then you can Trash them.

  • Address Book Lookup behaving strangely

I am having a minor problem with my Address Book. Some but not all of the entries will not look up by first name. When I start typing a name, for example "John" to find John Smith, it can't find the contact. John Smith is in the address book, and it finds him if I type in "Smith". It would be one thing if it was not letting me look up any contacts by first name, but it is only doing it on about a third of them. I assumed that maybe there was something funny going on with the particular entries, but going in to edit the address book entries, I can find no difference between the ones that don't work and the ones that do. This is very odd.
A relevant factor may be that it only started doing this after I installed Google Sync on my phone and synced my address book with my Google Contacts.
Any ideas what might be causing this problem and/or how I can fix it? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks--T

Hi and welcome to the forums!
Go to contacts, options/ general options and make sure you have sort by: first/last name
    whichever you would like.
Then do this, no data will be lost when doing the following: pull the battery while the device is ON. Replace after a minute, Let the device reboot 1-3 min, see if the problem is fixed.

  • Strange Entourage/Address Book synching problem

    Hi,
Has anyone else seen this? I'm using the Sync Services preference within Entourage to synchronize the Entourage and Address Book contact lists. I've done this with several computers before, with no problems. But on this particular computer (running 10.4.11 and Office 2004) whenever a synch takes place, within the Address Book titles appear before the first name in all the contacts. The fields in Entourage are all correctly entered in. This would be just a small annoyance, except that of course subsequent iPhone/Address Book synchs result in everyone's title showing up on the iPhone as well.
I've made sure that the Title field is on the Address Book layout (and it is, beside Company, below First Name and Last Name), tried ditching the Address Book folder within Application Support, running the PocketMac SyncClean utility to clean out the Sync Services cache, deleting the Address Book completely and re-synching (multiple times), yet nothing works.
    Any ideas?

Since Entourage is not an Apple product, you'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=33607053> rather than an Apple forum.
