Strange Airport Express setting and iTunes

Here's the deal: I have set up my AE, a long time ago, to use an static IP address from the ISP and to distribute IP addresses using 10.0.1.1 scheme. Everything has worked flawlessly for 2 years or so. Now I moved and the connection sometimes drops, which led me to believe someone had hacked my password and was just using all my bandwidth (BTW, is there a utility that will let me check traffic?) so I decided to turn off the IP distribution and just use the static IP. Internet works fine but my iTunes speakers are gone, when I try to connect to them I get the error "the remote speakers are not compatible with this version of iTunes". Updated to latest software, both OS and iTunes, no go. Reverted to IP distribution, everything works again.
What's going on? How can I solve this?

xplan303ex, Welcome to the discussion area!
More than likely your original problem comes from RF interference. Other neighboring wireless networks and devices operating at 2.4 GHz can negatively affect your wireless network. Try changing the channel used until you find a channel which works better or you run out of channels.

If you want to keep your network secure, use WPA2 or WPA with a non-dictionary password.

  • Airport Express WDS and itunes

I must be an idiot! I have spent hours trying to configure my Airport express X2 for driving my stereo system as a remote node. The only way I can get it to work is to have two separate base stations and in that case, I can't get web connectivity at the same time. I have reviewed some of the existing discussions on this subject, but I don't understand the WDS vs. client distinction or how to set this right. Please help!

Unless you need to extend your wireless network or need to use a remote ethernet port there is no need to use WDS.
Reset both Airport Express (AX) units.
Configure the first AX as a wireless router connected to your internet connection.
Using the Airport Assistant, configure the second AX to join your existing wireless network (this is client mode)
You wouldn't need to extend your existing wireless network (WDS Mode) just to stream iTunes to your stereo.
    Hope that helps.

  • Airport express/extreme and iTunes configuration

I recently purchased a Macbook Air 10.9.3, to replace my 7 year old white Macbook 10.6.8.  I connected the air to my home wireless network which was running through an Airport express (A1088).
Recently I started having issues with the network (having to restart the airport frequently).  In an attempt to troubleshoot this, I reset the airport extreme.
Bad idea.  After the reset, the Air would no longer find the airport Express "this version of airport utility doesn't support this base station".  I tried to use my old macbook (which has Airport utility 5.6.1) to configure it, but just couldn't get it right.  The more I messed around, the worse I think I made it.  I could get the airport and a network on the old macbook, but it wouldn't connect to the internet.
So after I ran out of ideas, I bought a new Airport Express.  That solved the internet problem on my new MB Air, but I still can't get the internet on the old Macbook - even with the new Airport express - I've obviously stuffed up a setting somewhere.
So, now that I had a redundant Airport express, I thought that I could use it to connect a speaker to for Airplay.
I've done another factory reset on the old Airport express and attempted (using the old macbook) to configure it using the instructions here... how to use my airport express just to stream music, no interent
    Current situation is:
    - I have internet on the Macbook Air via a new Airport Express
    - I have no internet on the old Macbook 10.6.8 but it can see the old Airport express (and also the network running from the new Airport that's working on the new MB Air)
    - I have a speaker connected to the Airport Extreme, but neither Mac can see the speaker (I'm assuming that I'll see the name of Airport in the airplay drop down?
    What I want is
    - To be able to use the Airport Extreme for Airplay
    - to get internet back on the old Macbook (any suggestions for something that I might have missed?)
Please be gentle, I am now confused and have found similar posts a bit too technical for me to understand or replicate.
For Airplay - Do I need to connect the Airports to each other?  Or do I need to just find a way to configure the old Airport Extreme using my old Macbook, so that I will be able to see it from the new Air and then I will be able to see the speaker in iTunes?
For the old Macbook that won't connect to the internet - I've tried the following:
    - matching the network settings that are working on the MB Air
    Nice basic instructions please!

    Additional information...
When I try to match the network settings from the MB Air on the old MB it tells me that another computer is already using this IP address.  These are the settings currently on the MB Air that are working.
These are the settings on the Airport Express..

  • Multiple Airport Express Units and Itunes

I have two Airport Express units, each is hooked up to a seperate stereo in the house. I tunes will connect with one or the other, but not both Airport Express units at the same time.
When selecting multiple speakers from the drop down box...the following error message is encountered..."The remote speaker "xxxx" does not support playback as a part of a group. Do you want to switch playback to it?"
Any help would be appreciated...when this is complete, the system will be doing exactly what I want.

The three most common problems encountered with mutiple AX's:
Itunes software (need 6.02 or better)
    AX firmware (need 6.3)
Firewall (you must ALLOW UDP traffic)
If all these items are met then usually what remains is configuration and/or a range problem. Since it sounds as though it works singularly, range is not the issue. Check the three most common and if they are right you are left with re-configuring the network or possibly (but unlikely based on the post) a bad unit.

  • Airplay and Airport Express - direct and network

    Hi,
I understand that i can stream music to an airport express (connected to an av receiver) either directly from my iPad 2 or from a PC upstairs via my wi-fi network. My question is whether the AEX can be set up to do either depending on source, (for example if i dont feel like going upstairs to switch on my PC and run itunes)?
Basically if I'm downstairs I'd like to stream directly from iPad with my pc off. Another benefit may be if the wi-fi connection may be weak so i could prefer to use the iPad directly (not upstairs to router then back down).

    Thanks.
Was worried that you needed to either set it up to either join a home network or to be a standalone server but could not set up both at the same time. How do I set it up to accept either/or (without reconfiguring)?
    Using:
AirPort Express wirelessly streams iTunes music as a standalone device
    or using:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
Ideally in future it will provide a wired media player access to a NAS drive, sometimes it would stream from iTunes on a computer to my A/ Receiver, othertimes it will stream music from my iPad to my AVR, but without reconfiguring each time.

  • Best Practices for Using Airport Express to Stream iTunes via Ethernet

So I've been reading various posts about using Airport Express to stream iTunes and I've been reading various posts about using the Ethernet port on the Express. However, not sure I've yet found an inclusive listing of settings for both. Wondering if anyone out there has such a thing?
I have an (older) Aiport Express (802.11g, no 'n') running the latest Firmware (6.3, I believe). I have it lashed into my switch via a Cat 6 cable and the 3.5 stereo mini running out to RCA jacks into my RussSound (home audio system) amp. I'd like to make the Express ONLY a iTunes streaming device getting its network link over Ethernet (AirTunes). So, what does everyone suggest for best settings for turning on the Ethernet, turning off the WiFi and running AirTunes?
    Thanks much in advance!
    cheers
    cp root

Airport > Wireless > Wireless mode "off"
Internet > Internet connection > Connect using "Ethernet", Configure IPv4 "via DHCP"
    Music > Enable Airtunes
Enable Airtunes over Ethernet (if this choice appears).
When I first did this, the remote speakers didn't appear in iTunes. I poked around to see what I missed and couldn't find anything wrong, but the next time I ran iTunes the remote speakers appeared.
If you run into a firewall problem, make sure your OS X firewall is configured to "set access for specific services and applications": http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/18503.html
Firmware 6.3 is correct for your Express.

  • AirPort Express set up for Outdoor Speakers

I need some advice from those who have used AirPort Express to drive music to a pair of outdoor speakers...I currently have my outdoor speakers (Def Tech AW6500s) set up to my home theatre receiver "B" speakers...When I listen to my music through AppleTV, I can choose to listen to my "A" speakers inside and/or my outdoor "B" speakers. Sometimes the kids want to watch TV or play video games while the adults want to continue to listen to music outside, so that's why I'm thinking of getting a separate system, using AirPort Express, for the outdoor speakers. (Although my receiver (Pioneer Elite 94TXH) supports zoning, I find it a little complicated and not as versatile).
I've done some research on what I'd need for the set-up...basically an additional amplifier hooked to the Airport Express. I've read other posts suggesting I can get an amp for anywhere from a few hundred to the cost of a modest home. I've seen info on the Peachtree Audio Nova which draws raves for digital music, but I'm not sure I need that type of quality (nor price tag) for outside. I'm not an audiophile, but I can tell good sound from bad, so I want some guidance to find the right balance...
    I'd appreciate any thoughts!!

    Jomobco,
I actually did look at the Sonos system when I was at Magnolia purchasing my speakers. Since I already have a few AirPort Expresses set up for my bedroom and kids' playroom, I thought it might be redundant. I was thinking about the Sonos more though when I started researching the Peachtree Nova and Decco, but I was a little hesitant about spending that much more for the system....It seems like a great system, though!!

  • Airport Express Pops and Clicks

I bought an airport express about a month ago with the goal of adding Airplay support to our living room.  So far it's worked well except that it pops and clicks (sometimes very loudly) every 20 minutes or so.  I've read that electrical interference may be the cause but 4 different surge protectors and line conditioners have done nothing to fix the problem.
I'm not using iTunes.   Only streaming from iphones and an ipad.
Are there any additinal steps I can take before returining the unit?

If it also pops and clicks when you plug in the headphones, that points to a defective AirPort Express that will need to be replaced.
If you do not hear the pops and clicks on the headphones, then you know the AirPort Express is good and the problem is likely somewhere between the AirPort Express, amp and speakers.
Sometimes a compressor on a refrigerator or air conditioner will send spikes though the AC lines that are picked up in the amp, no matter what kind of surge supressor you have. I have had this problem, and had to replace the separate amp I was using.

  • Connection to airport express fails after iTunes 10.1.1.4 upgrade !

    Hi,
Before ugrading iTunes to V10.1.1.4, everything was OK and I was listening music from itunes through airTunes with my airport express V 6.3.
Since I've upgraded iTunes, when à play a song, I've the error msg "cannot connect to [airport express name]. network connection failure"
It's the second time, I've connection problems to airport express after an iTunes upgrade !
First time was just after uorgrade from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10.
I had to wait for a new iTunes upgrade to fix up the problem (nearly 1 month !)
I'm a bit angry with iTunes and that kind of problems just before christmas !
    Thanks for your help !

Yes, there's an exception for Bonjour in the firewall (Bonjour is allowed)
I've try to re-add the "APAgent" which control Airports and restart the firewall but it didn't worked...
The only solution I've found was to desactivate Windows firewall...
(Firewall of my ADSL box is activated).
Maybe I should try to repair iTunes Installation like WPLU...

  • MacBook Pro sound out to airport express other than iTunes

Is there any way to get sound to link to my airport express other than iTune files?
I've gotten iTunes to connect to my airport express and then toslink it to my preamp but is there any way to get audio other than in iTunes to connect wirelessly to my airport express e.g. a movie sound track or a you tube audio? I listen to internet radio through iTunes all day and it's great, but other audio, only comes out either from the MacBook Pro speakers or vie hard wire (or optical) to my sound system. Sounds so simple, and it might be, but... how?

Sure, it's easy. Check out airfoil at http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/
I use it with 2 airport express and also my ipod touch. The "hijack" application they pair with airfoil lets me listen remotely to just about anything I can play on my Mac. Wish I could use the ipod touch as a remote as I do with iTunes.

  • Airport express set up gets stuck at "waiting for airport"

Hi - I have a A1264 model of airport express & macbook air is running Yosemite. I'm having trouble connecting back to my wireless network (I've had no issues with it in the past, just that I unplgged the APE & now needs resetting after plugging back into the power).
I've tried all 3 types of resets & furthest I get is it allows me to 'add to existing network" & the final step of "waiting for airport..." on the APE utility is where is gets stuck & after 10-15 seconds is says there's an error & to try again.....
Am I missing something?? thanks for any help.

  • My Airport Express units and Apple TV are disappearing from my network for Airplay

I'm using a BT Home Hub (third generation) as the centre point of my network. The Airport Express Units, and the Apple TV, are connected to it wirelessly, using the 'Join A Wireless Network' option in the setup.
Although the units are visible on the network, they disappear from the Airplay menu on iOS devices and my MacBook Pro, and need to be rebooted to bring them back.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be?
The Apple TV Is now cabled to the router, which rectified a performance issue I had with it whereby films being streamed would stop periodically.
Prior to this, I had the devices wirelessly connected to, and extending, an Airport Extreme network, being broadcast from my Time Capsule. I had to change this however, as the Airport Express units did not play music smoothly and would also disappear from the Airplay menu. I figured that the Time Capsule was at fault, as it's around 4 or 5 years old, and has been showing signs of ageing for a while now, however this new problem has occured since.
I'm tempted to replace the Time Capsule, with a new Airport Extreme unit and external HDD unit to continue wireless Time Machine backup of my three Macs, but don't want to do this if not strictly necessary.

Is there a way to stream internet audio to these devices?
You might want to take a look at Airfoil for Mac to be able to stream any source on your Mac to the AirPort Express.

  • Airport Express (b and g only) not connecting to internet

Hey guys I have the old airport express (B and G) and I have been trying to make it connect it to the internet for 5 hours. I have an arris cable modem and a linksys 10/100 5-Port Workgroup switch router thats in between the airport and the cable modem. I have tried hard reseting the airport and manually changing the subnet mask to the correct one but it won't connect I have tried directly connecting the airport to the cable modem but still no go the weird thing is the mac mini also connected to the router and does connect to the internet but the subnet mask address does not match up with the one the airport automatically assigns the mac mini has 255.255.255.0 but the airport gets 255.255.255.255 and when i try to to change it manually it gives me the green light but still won't let me connect to the internet any ideas i have just about had it with this thing.

...and a linksys 10/100 5-Port Workgroup switch router...
Since I have never heard of a device described as a "switch router",I'm going to guess that this thing is really only a switch. Using a switch in this way will not work. You need to place a router (even a very inexpensive one) between the cable modem and the AirPort Express (AX). Then the AX would be configured to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address). The router would then provide IP addresses to the AX's clients as well as the ones connected via Ethernet to the router.

  • Attempted to set up an HP wireless printer and my whole network is now a mess.  HP help told me I had too many signals, as I have a Time Capsule 4 Macs and 4 Airport Express set up.  Anyone else figure this out?

I attempted to set up a new HP wireless printer.  It is unstable and HP support says I have too many devices since I have a time capsule and 4 airport express either extending my network or being used for a different printer or stereos.  Anyone else find that their Airport Express/Extreme interferes with a wireless printer. If so, what's the point?

I have a similar model, the  HP 8500A here in the home office that I originally hooked up using wireless on an AirPort system consisting of an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule and 2 AirPort Express devices.
The HP was originally hooked up to the "main" router using wireless as a test to see how wireless would perform. No issues with setup or performance over the first few weeks. I did eventually change the device to connect using Ethernet once I had room to move the device near the AirPort Extreme.
HP is pulling your leg with the advice about too many devices. The AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule will handle up to 50 wireless devices. In my case, I did nothing except follow the setup procedure and restart the entire network....something that I always do when I make any change to the network.

  • The new version of Itunes is NOT interfacing correctly with my Airport Express device and I get an error message when I put my macbook in sleep mode.  Anyone else dealing with this?

When I put my mac in sleep mode I get an error message and I have to click on it and then select whethere to play on computer or airport express.  This was not true with the old Itunes but with this new version it is true.  Any help?

well nobody bothered to give me a hint on what to do, maybe because the problems with the new version of iTunes are really a lot, there is an enormous amount of people out there that have all sort of different problems including mine  so I have decided to return to the previous version which works fine and wait untill the apple people come up with a decent product ....
