Strange airport problem since 10.5.3 - not solved by x.4

Hello,
as suggested by RodneyW I will try looking for help with an own thread:
I have a major problem with my airport-connection. Until 10.5.2 it worked fine.
I have a MacBook C2D (late 2006) and a Fritz!Box 7270 router with latest firmware. Wireless is set to ngb. The router normally broadcasts via the 2,4 Ghz band using channel 1.
I use WPA (TKIP) and a very strong random password (63 characters, I think).
This worked great until 10.5.3. Since then it is very hard to connect to the network. Sitting next to the router in the same room (no matter whether I am one meter or just centimeters away), I cannot connect most of the times. Mostly I get an error message ("time limit exceeded" should be the correct translation). In case my Mac connects, the connection is very(!) slow or literally doesn't exist at all.
The "funny" / strange thing is: as I walk away from the router, the connection starts getting better! I am now sitting two rooms away and my MacBook next to me connects perfectly!
According to AirportRadar and iStumbler there is no other wireless broadcasting at the same channel as my router does. Next to the router the signal strength is great (but no usable connection), two rooms away my signal strength is even lower than some other signal around here but the internet works fine (I am in fact connected to my network).
What I tried so far:
- repair permission, scan hd for errors (just in case s.o. asks)
- re-installing 10.5.3 using the combo update
- updated to x.4 using the combo update with turned off airport and bluetooth
- deleted my network from the preferred networks and connected again
- changed the ssid
- changed the wpa-password
- reboot in safe mode
- turned off IPv6
- played around with the IO80211Family.kext
Btw., there is no problem with re-connecting after wake-up.
Is there anyone having an idea to solve this? I would add any additional information needed to solve this.

Hooray, working again!
I changed encryption to WPA2 as you suggested. My first experience was that my connection got much faster. Since I have the draft-n-patch installed, sold by Apple some months ago, I was now able to connect using that standard. I never realized that.
Unfortunately, the main problem still existed. Now I slightly modified your second advice and switched to 802.11n+a broadcasting via the 5 Ghz band, used solely by me. And now, the connection even works next to the router! Still looks a bit unstable but I just downloaded a 500 Mb-file without troubles.
Seems as if the great number of networks was one of the reasons for my problem.
The commands mentioned by you return the following now:

  • Airport Problem since 10.4.6

Ever since 10.4.6, I have had issue with airport. It always stays connected to my wireless network.
however, the internet will periodically stop working (happens several times a day very annoying). I have to turn off airport and turn it on again, to make internet start working again. This does not happen to my Powrbook and PC on the same network.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry, this isn't a helpful reply, but I thought it might be worth pointing out that I have the same (or a very similar) problem.
I'm running a 20 inch Intel Mac, which prior to 10.4.6 suffered from that other horrible airport problem described under the 'Airport Speed Problem' threads on this forum. That has since been resolved by 10.4.6 (network speeds are normal). However, my iMac periodically loses the wireless network when I wake it up from sleep mode (I go from four bars to no signal). To get it back I usually have to switch off my airport card, put the iMac to sleep, power cycle the modem (cable) and router then start up the iMac again, and even this cumbersome routine doesn't work all of the time. I know this isn't a problem with my network because I have several other computers in the house that don't register any change or problem with signal levels or connectivity. My iBook, for example, which also runs 10.4.6 doesn't notice any change.
I'm surprised not to see more examples of this problem here, as when I spoke to a Mac genius about it, he said it was a 'known issue', though one more common to the Mac Minis. It has to be a hardware problem in my case. Maybe I need to get my airport express card checked out?

  • AirPort Extreme Update 2007-004 did not solve my reliability problems.

The latest update from Apple did not fix the problem on my system, and now I don´t know what I should do, is there anything I can do to somehow fix it?
I can´t use the computer like this, it´s very annoying, for example I can´t browse the web with Safari(constant "Failed to open page" or "You´re not connected to the internet" messages), ethernet is not an option, besides, what´s the point of a laptop if I cannot connect to the network wirelessly?
This is my first MacBook by the way, I like its look & feel, easy of use and integration, but this AirPort issue completely took away the "just works" image I had of Apple´s products.
Don´t get me wrong though, I knew the Mac was not going to be perfect, and that there would be problems(as usual), but I would never have expected something like this.
I´d really like to get this thing to work, the Mac pretty much offers the kind of integration that I´ve always wanted in Linux.
Anyway.. am I the only one whose system is still having problems with AirPort?
What can I do to fix this?
Should I just wait until Apple releases another bug fix for this? how long would this take?
Should I return this MacBook to an Apple store?
I bought this in the U.S. and there is no store on my country(Uruguay), there´re however some Apple Authorized Service Providers, should I take it to them? would they give me a brand new Mac or repair this one for free if I´m covered by the warranty?
I read(http://www.apple.com/support/contact/) that since I´m still within the 90 days of ownership I can call Apple Technical support, but since they don´t have a number for my country, is there an alternative way of contacting them?(via email?).
I don´t know.. what do you people think I shoud do?
+Please don´t recommend me to install an older version, I really don´t want to, besides how do I know it will fix the issue?+
    About the problem:
    Symptoms:
AirPort signal level randomly decreases until connection is lost, and there is no automatic reconnection.
Manual reconnection is required and might not always succeed, and even if it does, it doesn´t last long(usually less than 3 minutes).
Sometimes the network is missing from the menu(when clicking the wifi icon on status bar) and turning off and on AirPort is required.
Judging from what I´ve read here and found on google, this is a known common problem that dates back to at least april 2007(see [1]).
    *Some (useful?) Information:*
    0) It might have worked better before updating (10.4.9 is the version of my Installation discs, I didn´t reinstall) to 10.4.10, but I can´t say for sure.
    1) According to [1] this seems to be a software problem in OS X, since the atheros driver works fine under Windows.
    2) It doesn´t matter if the laptop is running from battery or not, and it doesn´t seem to be related to waking from sleep state since it happens on a clean restart too.
    3) Once in a while, the OS asks me to enter the WPA passphrase again to connect to the network, why does it do this if the passphrase is already stored inside the default login keychain?. (entering the passphrase again does not fix the problem)
    4) Wireless router is a speedtouch modem, it´s properly configured and it´s known to work, its leds indicate that everything is ok.
    5) The MacBook is approx. 6m away from the speedtouch router(walls in between), electronic devices: headless computer next to the speedtouch modem, printer, radio, tv (note: not that it matters since the laptop has worked from this location before).

    Hi,
Well I don´t know what to think now.. I installed the last security update, restarted, went to sleep and now it seems to be working much better, at least there doesn´t seem to be so many drop outs.
I find it a little strange that the airport icon on the status bar that shows signal strength keeps changing, but maybe this is normal behaviour?, don´t know..
I can´t say that the problem is fixed either since I didn´t start to experience airport issues immediately after I updated to 10.4.10, so who knows?
Maybe it works for two days in a row and then it suddenly starts malfunctioning for no apparent reason.
It could be very well be a combination of little problems here and there(some even caused by me editing system preferences) that add up and manifest as a bigger problem, I´ve no idea how to trace it, and as long as it works, I don´t care..
I doubt this will help anyone, but anyway.. the last thing I remember doing before restarting was executing:
    # System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/airp ort --updateprefs
which examines network preferences and repairs them if necessary.
Then I went into System Preferences > Network, AirPort´s options and restored default settings, after that I configured it to require administrator password to "Create Computer-to-Computer networks".
I´m hoping that the whole airport issue not working after the last airport update was a weird glitch or even better, caused by me.
If it starts malfunctioning again, I´ll simply call AppleCare and let them deal with it, by the way, it kind of ***** that the only way of contacting them is via phone and no phone number is listed for my country.. no email address? ...
    Best Regards,
    Federico

  • Strange permissions problem since 10.4.6 update

Have noticed a very strange problem which I think is related to 10.4.6 Am updating my web sites (to a Unix box) this weekend and I noticed that once uploaded the files could not be accessed (permission denied error). I looked at the files on my Mac and noticed that on the ownership and permissions settings, 'Others" was set to "No Access". I changed this to read only and uploaded again and problem fixed. It is reproducible and seems to be related to the files ending in html on my Mac, which by default are set to be opened by Safari (not sure why, all were set to BBEdit originally but a previous system update changed these). Did 10.4.6 introduce some security fix that changed the permissions of html files. If I create a new file using BBEdit I notice that Others is set to read only which is why I suspect 10.4.6 might have changed any Safari related files??
    Tony

I'm not sure what happened to your permissions, but I just checked both a Safari html file and a TexEdit one, and both still have Others as read only. I also created an html file of this web page from the Safari View Source page, and it was, obviously, a Safari html file. The permissions were normal, with others having Read Only access.

  • Really Strange Airport Problem...Can Anyone Help?

We have 3 Macs in the house and two Xboxes using Airport. Everything works fine.
Tonight, for some bizarre reason, two of the Macs lost their connection to the home Airport network. The Xbox still connects fine (and is the farthest away!), the Macs say they can't connect.
I've restarted the modem, and Airport, and the Macs. Still the same.
Is there any way this can be a Bellsouth problem (my carrier)...?
    Thanks
    Tom

I am having a similar problem as of late. I purchased my MacBook in November 2009 along with a Time Capsule. Never had a problem connecting wirelessly. But, over the past 60 days, my MB has been either losing it's connection to the TC or is connected to my wireless network but not seeing an IP address. I have two PC's that are connected wirelessly and have internet connection when my MB does not. I can, however, gain internet access via plugging into the ethernet port. I have checked and rechecked the settings and have all updates. In the beginning, all I had to do was to turn off the Airport on my MB and turn it back on. I would reconnect. Then, when that stopped working, I had to reboot my MB to reconnect. Now, I have to reboot my TC so my MB can reconnect. I get the feeling that the Airport on my MB is failing. Any suggestions?

  • Strange Graphics Problem Since Upgrading to 10.5.5

    Hi,
I have a March 08 Octo core Mac Pro with 23" Cinema display which have both been trouble free until today. After waking the mac pro up from sleep the screen graphics were all messed up. I was able to clear it by moving the cursor over the affected areas. The computer also kept asking me for my wireless network password, but would not accept it.
I re-booted and was confronted with the same screen again, only this time it connected to my network okay. Again, I could clear the mess by moving the cursor around. I tried re-booting again and once again the same screen. Now I get the screen whenever I turn the computer on or off. Once I have cleared the mess, the system seems to work fine.
Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?
Here is a picture of the screen.

I would suggest doing the Leopard 5.5. combo upgrade download from apple. I had a number of issues following normal 5.5 upgrade but this solution solved everything.

  • Strange User Account behaviour at Log In - not solved re duplicate thread

This morning I cold booted my laptop and strangely after signing in it declared that it was "Preparing Windows." I was then taken to a desktop with empty Documents etc. folders. Panicking I went to the User Accounts and found all my folders and data intact but not accessible through the "account" I had been forced to log in to. Licensed software that was not installed as multiple user wouldn't show as licensed so I must assume that some sort of default new profile had been created. However, in User Accounts there didn't seem to be anything new.
In addition to my account and that of my wife there were three other folders that I am sure have always been there. (1) Default (with user empty subfolders) (2) An alphanumeric (temp?) folder ... empty except for Appdata / Local / Temp ... itself empty (3) UpdatusUser - used by Nvidia to update the graphics driver (with user empty subfolders) (4) Public - usual subfolders.
I solved the problem by logging out and logging back in with my usual login credentials. (Switching user didn't work).
What happened please and how can I prevent it happening again?

  • Chapter Marker Problem - Similar to post but not solved

This is my first export since upgrading; in the past all I've ever done was create chapter markers, export to QT and import into DVSPro and poof done. Life is good. Now there are no markers in DVSP. I read a thread about this same problem and it was solved with a right-click to "Add Embedded Markers." That doesn't work for me. The green markers appear in the Timeline & Canvas. I did intentionally put markers into the video & audio tracks themselves so that when I added footage at the front of the sequence I knew where to add markers into the timeline. But, again, there are chapter markers in the Timeline that show in the Canvas. HELP.

EXPORT DIRECTLY THROUGH COMPRESSOR from FCP.
It succks but the quality (especially sync sound) is best. The time is SLOW though!
Oh...don't forget when you lay down your tracks to right click on the time line in DVDSP to "show embedded markers.
    I guarantee this will work!!!

  • AirPort problem after installing Security Update 2007-007

Help! I installed the security update 2007-007 on my Mac mini os x and now my AirPort is not detecting any signal. Should I backup the system and then reboot? I'm not really sure what to do. I have tried almost everything I can imagine. I checked through the user logs and all was functioning properly until the update installed. All of the settings for the network and internet connect say that they have failed.
Please help! I am not particularly familiar about backing up -- how do I do this? (please spell out for me, I'm really new to mac!)
    Thanks in advance

Can't help with the airport problem, since I don't do wireless. As for backing up, these should get you pointed in the right direction:

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

  • Massive wireless connection problems since airport client update 2009-001

    Hi,
I have a brand new MacBook Unibody 2 GHz with 4 GB RAM and an OSX installation up to date. Since the update of the airport client software 2009-001 on March 4th, I have MASSIVE problems to establish a working wifi network connection.
I use as APs a D-Link 614+ with up to date router firmware, a ZyXel Wireless Lan Router 100 (some ISP bulk router from my provider) with up to date router firmware and an AVM 7170 Wireless LAN router with up to date firmware. The last one is extremly expensive and state of the wifi art.
First of all, I can not establish a stable connection to no one of my wifi routers. After entering the passphrase for WPA, an established connection fades out in 20seconds-3minutes. And trying to establish a connection lasts minutes! Mostly OS X is telling me "Out of time". But in wireshark there is in due to my research mostly no packet transfer over the en1 wifi device at all! The airport card sometimes is fooling around with me!
I tried serveral configurations with all my routers differing in encryption (Wep->Wpa->Wpa2) or TTL of the packets or whatever the router is configurable. But I could not solve this problem for me.
Wifi is like dead.... not working reliable... or not working at all.
I have also used Wireshark to get into this problem. With start of an connection with EAPOL, it lasts serveral seconds till the airport card replies to the AP. Airport should response in milli seconds.... but no!
Then DHCP handshake sometimes finishes succesfully, but the airport card turns the correct ip address into a wrong ip address.
MacBook: 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.0 Request "give me an ip"
AVM Router: 10.255.128.1 to 255.255.255.0 ACK "TAKE 10.255.128.25"
You would think the airport card would take the given 10.255.128.25, but no it takes 192.168.0.100 and can not establish an internet connection, OF COURSE!
What the **** is the airport client firmware doing while takeing the wrong IP adress, which is not given by the DHCP Server?
And I have also discovered, that the airport card is sending out tons of ARP requests like:
MacBook: MacBookMacAdress to Broadcast ARP "who has 10.255.128.1?" (my avm router)
AVM Router: AVMMacAddress to MacBookMacadress ARP "I am at ....."
But hey, the airport card seems not be able to understand the avm reply and requests again immediately uncountable times!
Apple, please fix your airport client software. It seems to me the parser within the firmware for packet parsing has some kind of dead locks or sth else.
This are just three hints for the firmware developers.
    PLEASE FIX THAT!

I don't know if this will fix your problem or not but it fixed my airport from self assigning ip's instead of taking the proper one.
Florida dude from this thread http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=24540&page=5 says
"I've been having the "self assigned IP" problem now for a bit. It all started when I let the battery run down, and I've been working with it now for a couple of weeks (except it affects ethernet AS WELL as airport).
I've found a temporary workaround. Go to Security in network preferences, and select firewall. Then select "allow all incoming connections". Go back to the preference pane, and select network. After about 15-20 seconds, it DHCP should assign a good IP. Then go back and reset your firewall.
Works ok, but if your Mac goes to sleep, you need to repeat."
Give it a shot, it worked for me.

  • Airport card suddenly gets no signal--not network problem

Hi all, I have an original Airport card that's been working fine in my G4 TiBook for the past 5 years. Today suddenly my network connection dropped. At first I thought it had to do with the base station, but two other computers in my house (both with Airport Extreme cards, if it makes any difference, though I don't see why it would) both connect fine, and resetting the base station makes no difference. The TiBook still recognizes the Airport card, turns it on and off, etc., but it itself can't see the base station or the network or the other two computers' computer-to-computer networks. When the TiBook creates a computer-to-computer network, my newer AlBook and PowerMac can't see it. I haven't installed anything recently, I haven't dropped the computer, I haven't even looked at it funny. As you can tell, I'm pretty exasperated and at a loss as to where to even begin looking for a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, we're on totally different generations of powerbooks. Mine is the 2nd gen. Gigabit Ethernet TiBook, so the battery definitely isn't the issue. I'm also using a replacement battery, not an original Apple batt. I also find it hard to imagine a scenario where the battery would suddenly start interfering with the Airport, esp. since the recall defect has to do with overheating.
I went to sleep last night and when I woke up this morning, it was working miraculously. Then, I left and came back a few minutes ago, and it was out again. I think I'm gonna open it up and reseat the card, etc., since it seems like some kind of loose connection. But I have no idea if I'm even in the right ballpark. Ach....
Let me know if you manage to work any miracles.

We bought a time capsule, 1TB, then the wifi has a problem since it does not identify the existing wireless network and it says that its need to have an update firmware. The existing firmware is 7.3.1, does it have an newest update firmware existing now? Does APPLE do not provide latest firmware for this item?

How old is that Time Capsule?  The fact that it still have firmware 7.3.1 suggests that it's not the latest model.  The latest firmware available for my two-year-old model is version 7.5.2.  Apple does provide firmware updates.  You just have to let the Time Capsule download and install them.  Use AirPort Utility to do that.
Regarding your Wi-Fi problem, please explain what you mean by "it does not identify the existing wireless network".
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

the problem I have since I upgraded to Mavericks version 10.9.1
The problem appears only with Mail not with other programs, not even with my browser.
When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but  he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".
