Strange Alert Sound

For a couple of days now I have had the following problem: Every 30 seconds or so, the system gives off a strange alert sound, one day it's something like a soft "CLONK", the next day it sound like "PHEW" and then back to "CLONK" etc. (the 2 sounds are different from the built-in sound effects).
I suspect that it has something to do with my internet connection, but all the cables are perfectly connected and all programs (Safari, E-Mail etc. ) work normally.
What could this be?
Thanks for any help!

Hello
I found the culprit !
As I had mentioned, the alerts were NO APPLE sounds. They came from my MS Entourage, where I had recently clicked the "sound when no message" box. So every minute or so, when Entourage checked if I had new E-mail messages and there were none, I got this CLONK or PEW sound !
Well, thanks anyway for your tips - they are always useful one way or the other!

  • Strange water sounds on my G-4 Power Book

I am having strange water dripping, splashing sounds on my G-4. When I was interviewed using SKYPE this week by a friend, he keep mentioning the sound of "running water" in the background. There was no ambient sound in the room I was speaking in.
I just found the "alert sound gauge" in preferences. When it is set to play every time I touch a key it makes the alert or alarm sound effect. I have mine set on submarine.
But that is not the electronic dripping or running water sound.
You can hear the running water that my friend talked about on my website where I have placed the MP3 of the interview.

Please I am open to any guidance to eliminate the water sounds.

  • How to find/get "Magic Bell" Alert Sound Effect

I've been looking everywhere for this alert sound on my Mac Pro (Magic Bell) I checked the System > Library > Sounds. for this file and cant find it anywhere, even searching with spotlight.
I wanted to dupe it across to my Mac Book Pro as its a nice alert sound, it seems strange that I cant find it.
The Mac Pro was upgraded from Tiger OS several months ago (whenever Leopard was released) so Im not sure if its a sound from that OS or from an app or where it came from since its not on my Mac Book Pro (which came with Leopard on it)
I've installed the same apps on my laptop as to whats on the desktop.
Anyone know where I can get this sound from or at least search within the app container/packages to see if its within those?
    Thanks.

The system sounds are all aiff, AFAIK, so a search for .aiff should turn it up.
There are some sounds in the Developer package and FYI, any sounds you add, don't add them to the system library, but if you create a sounds folder in the
/Library directory they will be seen by the system without modifying the original library.
In Sound preferences, these additional sounds show up as "System Shared" and not Built-in.
You don't mean the glass tink do you?

  • Alert sound when using Command Cut, Copy

    Hi there
I have what seems to be a strange but recurring problem on a particular website where I have to edit a lot of text and keywords around. I'm using an Apple Macbook running on 10.7.4, but also regularly use an iMac on 10.5.11, and on both computers whenever I use Command + Cut, Copy or Paste I have to endure my alert sound over and over again.
I know I could simply mute my volume but it's very frustrating and I'd simply like to know why it's happening.
I have posted in the forum of the website I'm using and no other Mac users have this problem.
If it's a Command key problem why is it specific to the website I'm using? The alert sound doesn't happen repeatedly when I'm Command + Cutting, Copying or Pasting in any other application.
It doesn't seem to be a problem with this website because no other users are reporting this.
I came across a similar forum discussion here but after running Repair Disk Permissions the problem isn't solved.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Strange alert noise tx2

I hve a tx2 touchsmart. It is new to me and im still figuring it out. It keeps making this strange alerting noise every 10 seconds. It is like a small honk (if you will) sort of an echo sound. Like it is arning me of somw\ething. Just not sure what. Can anyone help??

Mine makes funny beeps quite often, as well, at seemingly random times.
I can't see that I'm doing anything wrong or strange, so I just ignore it.
But, every 10 seconds seems like there's something else going on.

  • Alerts sounds are not working after upgrading to iOS 7.1.2

    Hi,
I've noticed that all the alerts sounds are not working anymore after upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.1.2
I’ve reviewed similar posts regarding the same issue; and it seems this is a common issue in iPhone 4S when upgrade to iOS 7.1.2.
Apple, please Advise if there anything I can do to resolve the issue especially that my work deepens on the push emails and alerts that requires prompt response.

    I got this issue resolved.
It caused due to some dirt in the charger slot; such dirt caused the phone to assume as if it is connected to a car kit and that is why it does not produce any sound except the Ringer and the Alarm.
It has been fixed by cleaning the charger slot by toothbrush! with some
    drops of a cleaner.
Do not do it by yourself, as it might be a risk; rather, let it to be done by an expert.

  • When my phone is locked, and I get a text message, it isn't making any sounds. When the phone is in use and I get a text, it makes the alert sound.

When I get a text while the phone is locked it doesn't make the designated alert sound, but it does if the phone is unlocked and in use.

I think you have the 'do not disturb' function enabled. If there is a moon icon in the top right of the home screen that will be the problem. Go to settings,  do not disturb, and make sure manual slider is off. I had the same problem and took me a day to figure out.
    Good luck

The Message "Connect to iTunes to Use Push Notifications "BBC History Magazine" notifications may include alerts, sounds and icon badges" keeps coming up in Newstand, also happens with National Geographic Magazine. HELP!
I have now followed multiple instructions from this and other forums. have turned push notifications off. Turned them on. Have updated to IOS 6. Have signed out and signed back in, have uninstalled all magazines and reinstalled. Have synced, and updated everything in iTunes.
Nothing works,. Also cannot use youtube.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
It might also be a good idea to contact Square for assistance.

  • Is there a way to create a ringtone or new alert sound for SMS?

I know i get tired of hearing my alert sound when I receive a text message. On top of that it seems as if everyone uses the same alert. Is there a way to create a new sound/ringtone for the SMS Alerts?

You can choose one of the 5 or 6 choices provided in settings.

  • PSA: in iOS 7.1.1, alert sounds are tied to your media/game volume and not to your ringer volume

I was befuddled by this for a long time.
Alert sounds would just stop making noise.  This includes dings from txt messages and new mail.
If I went to Settings>Sounds>Text Tone and select several options, all I would get were vibrations.
I rebooted the phone and toggled the silence switch on and off.
I finally figured out that if I started a game and turned the volume up, the noises would come back.
I think it is reasonable for a user to wish to play a game on mute but still hear alert messages.
I think if we can only have two separate systems for audio control, the alert sounds should be tied to the ringer, not to the media/game sounds.
When I spoke to an apple support person over online chat, they seemed to agree that this sounds like a bug.
I have seen many confused posts in these forums regarding alert sounds suddenly disappearing.
Below is the text that I submitted at http://www.apple.com/feedback/
If you share this problem, I suggest you do the same.
    My case number is 606343836
    Begin message:
I've had a 5S since a few weeks after launch and this problem has only come about in the last few weeks, so I suspect it has to do with a recent OS patch.
Sometimes my alert messages just stop working.  They seem to work one minute, then they stop.  Alert messages would include email notifications and txt message pings.  When they are not working, I can go into Settings>Sounds>Text Tone, and all of the options will simply result in a vibration and no sound.
Rebooting the phone does not fix the problem.
What I have found to fix the problem is to open a game and raise the volume of the game.  Then when I exit the game, alert messages start again.
This seems reversible, if I go back in and mute a game, my alert messages go away as well.
If this is by design, I do not think it should be, as I think it is reasonable for a user to want to control the "media" part of the volume separately from the "ringer" and "alerts" part of the volume. It makes sense to want play a game or video on mute but still get alert messages. If anything, I think the alerts volume should be tied to the ringer volume, I think that would make sense.

Additional info, which makes me think this is a bug rather than a feature.  If you go into Settings > Sounds and turn off the "Change with Buttons" option, then the ringer should always ring at the volume of the slider on the screen.
The volume buttons now appear to only affect the media/games volume, and it works as expected EXCEPT:
if you are in a game and you mute the volume in the game, then exit the game, all alert sounds are muted and you can't turn them back up by raising the volume with the volume buttons.
If you go back into the game and raise the volume within the game, then exit the game, then alert sounds do turn back on.
I have tested this with two games from two developers.

  • No alert sounds on iPhone 6 IOS 8.1.1

Hi there very frustrating, the phone stopped alert sounds 1-2 days ago, despite the function being turned on for all major apps. Also won't ring with 'No caller ID'. Update installed this morning - still same problem. Also touch screen is sometimes unresponsive. need to go out of app and restart.

No doubt akbuzzer,,,I recently switched from many years with Samsung phones and finally took the plunge and paid what I consider a buttload of money for an IPhone 6.Since day 1 I have had nothing but trouble with purchased alert tones.Contacted Apple numerous times cleared and synced my phone several times as per their instructions with no fix.How can my 300 dollar "Dell" laptop download and play purchased Apple ITunes products with no issues but my 600 dollar Apple IPhone 6 can't download and play tones that Apple is selling. So yes after hours of research and wondering what i'm doing wrong it comes down to 3 dollars,,,that might make me go back to Samsung.

  • Hi. when I'm texting, if the person i'm texting sends a text before i've sent mine, i dont get an alert sound and the message only arrives after mine is sent even though i may know its there waiting. I didnt have this problem till i updated software. 4s

Hi all. Hope someone can help with this infuriating issue that I didn't have until updating. If a friend texts me while I'm texting them, I don't get an alert sound and the message stays outside waiting for me to send and finish. When I send, my friends message comes in but ive probably gone to home position and missed it. waiting for replies till all hours.

I think the problem lays with Last.fm. I had the same exact problem as you. In your processes screen, end the task "lastfmhelper.exe" Last.fm still scrobbles. The tracks don't skip, although I notice there is still a bit of a lag in the first part of the song - but if you can deal with that, no skipping. I think you will have to end that task everytime you boot up your computer, or uninstall last.fm completely until they fix it; it is a bug in their software, as opposed to iTunes.

  • Text message vibrate instead of alert sound

i am in a text message conversation screen (as opposed to the main message screen that lists my messages), and my phone ringer is on with vibrate activated. however when i receive a text message within the conversation, it only vibrates with no sound alert. is this normal?

Even just going back to the list of converstatoins (button in top left) you will not get alert sound while in the App.  Again, it assumes you are looking at it and seeing the indicators pop up for number of messages etc for each conversation.
You have to be out of the app for it to give a sound.
If you are not expecting a msg right away then why stay in it?  Press home and go back to home screen and wait.

  • Switching off gnome-shell alert sounds

Here's something that's been driving me up the wall: Skype respects the setting of "Sound Effects", which in itself is kind of alright.
But the settings only let me choose between off or some sound theme, so I can't set the alert sounds to "none", while still being able to hear an incoming call in skype. How can I switch off these infuriating pops and blubs seperately? Relevant for volume change and typing, tab-complete and so on.
    Thanks in advance

Try disable notifications in system-settings in gnome-shell.
