Strange App Folder Issue

Out of 300 machines in the whole building, I have a lab that does not show a specific App folder in the start menu. When the same user logs in on a different machine, it shows up for them there.
I can't figure out why, I've even reimaged the machines back to base and still it happens.
Has anyone else ever seen this issue?

One of the other folders is in the same OU, the others are located elsewhere. It boggles my mind that it only happens to those machines and no others within the building. And its only the start menu, if I set it to Desktop shortcut, it works

Strange App Store issue...

In the iPad section of the app store there used to be a "Quick Link" at the top right that took you to a section for iPad games. It is no longer there. When I click on the Hot Games icon (or pick "games" from the app store drop down menu) it takes me to a selection of iPhone games. I accidentally bought two iPhone games last night thinking I was in the iPad section. I can't find a way to get to the iPad-only section. Something has definitely changed in the last two days. Anybody else notice this?

Sharer folder issue between two directly connected PC

Dear All, I have an issue regarding folder sharing. need your help to resolve this. the scenario is
two PC's are connected directly to share a folder, to open *.mdb file of a accounting software. this problem start when I moved windows XP PC's and installed windows 7 64 bit PC's. there is no compatibility issue as I run the same software on other
locations
PC A (192.168.1.200) has that *.mdb file and PC B (192.168.1.100) has to open this file through a network.
when I configured the folder share and network setting, all done well and PC B can connect with PC A and that software work well. After two days, when we start the software at PC B, its not responding when it try's to open that database file.
while analyzing, I found out that PC B can open the share folder of PC A but when open the desired database folder explore starts not responding and need to quit it by force. I also tried to share another folder of PC A but results are same.
PC A run the software with out any problem.
It seems like network issue, so I check the cable with cable tester, found it good, than I check the connectivity by ping command, it giving me <1ms time. but still change the connectors.
the hard part is that, this share folder issue arises 3-4 days a week and 2-3 days it works well, and this is happening from last 28 days. I mean, one day we start the the PC B and use the software via network, the next day we start the PC B and we don't
able to use the software,..strange.
I also change the cable connection from cross to straight as both new PC's have gigabit Ethernet but results are same.
I already contact with software company, as per them its network issue as we can use the software on local PC (PC A) and there is no error messages popup.
please help me out in this regard.

Firstly, we need to identify is this file sharing or netowrking problem. If you can access to the shared folder and modify its files which locate at PC B through PC A, it indicates file sharing works with no problem.
After that, we need to check if its networking or software itself problem when reading the .mdb file.
Put the .mdb file at PC A, then using the software open it for test. If no problem, we need to use Process Monitor to capture the access trace of the software process, we should be able to find some clues.

Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

Did you use the Migration Assistant to help set up the new iMac using some of the files in the older PC? Some likely won't mean much, unless you have applications that can use or convert them. There's also a way to use the software Time Machine to import data files from an external or another computer, so you may have used that, too.
Hopefully someone with experience in a similar issue will reply...

CE7.11 not starting up, missing apps folder

I installed CE711 enhp1 Preview version by following all instruction on windows xp sp3, my server 0 which is java instace is always yellow its(jstart) not getting started.Strange is my installation dont have C:\usr\sap\CE1\J00\j2ee\cluster\apps folder.
The error from trc file C:\usr\sap\CE1\J00\work\dev_jstart is
Error=> sfCheckJeeVersion: Cannot find JEE application directory C:\usr\sap\CE1\J00\j2ee\cluster\apps. http://sfxxmain.cpp 857
Error=> Cannot connect to Message Server http://sfxxmsc.hpp 784

Curve 9300 - Strange App Appeared - "AlternateApp"

A strange app has appeared on the applications screen (press and hold BB menu key and 6 icons are displayed). Alternate App is a blank icon and does not appear to do anything.
Anyone know what it does and how I can get rid of it??
I wonder if it is anything to do with running Android apps on the Playbook as I have found a reference to "AlternateApp" connected with that.

What happened just before this icon appeared? A new app? An update of some kind? Something else?
Does a batt-pull reboot cure it?
I've seen that type of icon before, and as I recall it had to do with QuickPull...for some reason, sometimes QP would not load up properly during reboot, and that icon would be left behind. Another batt-pull reboot would normally cure it. I'm not saying that it's QP in your case...it's entirely possible that some other app could exhibit the same behavior.
I doubt it has anything to do with your suspicion...your not running any Android apps on your 9300, are you?

Installing Applications to a Re-Arranged Apps Folder

Many [Apple] application installers have difficulty installing when you have organized the Application directory using folders. For example, instead of having all the applications in the "root" of the Applications folder, some people create categories like "Audio", "Graphics", "Productivity" or "Entertainment" folders.
In addition to looking cleaner in Finder, it also has another benefit: If you drag a shortcut of your Apps folder to the dock, you can right-click that icon, and it'll spring open a nice "start menu" explorer, right from the dock. In addition to Quicksilver, it's a great way to get access to your applications, without having a thousand icons on the dock.
Unfortunately, many Apple installers look for the existing application in order to upgrade it. When the application is not in the root of the Apps folder, the installer chokes, and doesn't let the upgrade proceed (it doesn't browse deeper folders to look for the application).
I came across this issue this morning with the Safari 3 beta. Because my Safari.app is within the "Internet" folder, the installer said my computer was not eligible for the upgrade. It wasn't until I moved the app to the root of the folder that it knew to upgrade it. This has happened with many applications I've wanted to install (some from Apple, some from other vendors).
While I know that most people probably do not organize their Apps into folders, the functionality exists, and many people do find it useful.
I don't know if this could be classified as a bug, because it's more of a user fringe case -- Has anyone else come across this problem? and has any solutions? I'm also curious to hear how other people keep their applications organized. I can't stand clutter -- I keep my Dock to less than 6 icons, use Quicksilver as much as possible, organize my app folders, and use the application shortcut in the dock to browse for infrequently used applications. You?

Create a new folder in your home folder, select all the applications, and hold down the Option and Command keys while dragging them to the folder you created to create aliases to them. You can then place the folder you created in the Dock and rearrange its contents without breaking software installers while leaving the original Applications folder as is.

Home Folder Issues after data drive move.....

I have a Mac OS X Server Leopard (latest version) that we have had running without too much troubles for some time now. When we ran out of space, I added a new large hard drive into our xServe and dittoed the user home folders to the new drive. I unshared the home folder file on the old drive, and then setup an identical share on the new drive. When users login on the mac, the system finds the home directory on the new drive fine, no issue.
The problem arrises when the user does a connect to server request. Their home folder comes up in the list and they mount the drive. However this share-point seams to be the folder still on the old drive. I have now deleted the folder containing the user home folders on the old drive, but it simply gets recreated when as user does a connect to server request. This folder is not longer shared and I can't understand why it still comes up with this old share point.
It is not a huge issue, but rather annoying.
Any ideas would be great.

Functionality for customized setups may differ slightly with a new os. Power cycling the device daily is always a good idea for maintenance.
I don't really consider having groups of icons on my home screen a customized setup. This is a native feature of the Android OS and something on the update caused this issue. I've been running 4.3 on two other devices (Nexus 7 and Sprint Galaxy S4) for months and I've had zero issues. If I didn't use folders I would need to fill up 3+ home screens just to have enough space for the apps I have on my main home screen. I have an identical setup on the Sprint Galaxy S4 (test phone for work) that is running 4.3 and I don't have this issue.
Second, are you officially saying that rebooting an Android device on a daily basis is a best practice? I typically reboot my phone every couple of weeks, but daily seems a bit excessive. Since the update I have to reboot at least once every 2-3 hours during the day to resolve the folder issue. It's the first thing I have to do in the morning to be able to access any apps that are within a folder.

My Applications folder under Macintosh HD is fine,
I assume this means that you see all your expected application files in the Finder when you open /Applications.
but when I open the Applications folder through my
home folder, it only lists my apps and programs up
through M, not all of them.
Normally I would use the ~/Applications folder for .app files I don't want to share with other users on the system. I suppose you could copy the files from /Applications to ~/Applications or make an alias to the files in /Applications. Is there some network/sys admin reason to do this?
Anyway, I'd check to see if this is a Finder or permission issue or check to see if the files have been moved. Create a Terminal window and try the following commands:
ls -al /Applications
sudo ls -al /Applications
ls -al ~/Applications
sudo ls -al ~/Applications
If the file list differs between the sudo and non sudo versions of the command line pairs, then the problem is permissions.
If the files aren't listed where you expect, they have been moved or deleted (try Spotlight to see if they've been moved to a subdir).
Aliased files will appear to be zero bytes long.

The new version of firefox has several steps to complete the download. The new version does download, but I am unable to move it to the app. folder. I get no prompt and the new firefox won't move.

Move Mobile Apps Folder To External Drive?

Hi guys,
I've got a MacBook Pro running Lion with all the latest software / updates. This has become my secondary machine (since buying a lovely 27" iMac), and I'm using iTunes Match to keep both the MacBook Pro and iMac's iTunes libraries in sync.
Now that I sync my iPhone and iPad to the iMac, I don't have much need for the Mobile Apps folder on my MacBook Pro. I have a lot of apps, so my Mobile Apps folder is ~50 gigs, and it's suddenly one of the larger items on the MacBook Pro's drive. Would it be possible to relocate this folder to my external drive for the MacBook Pro? I found an older suggestion (to move the Mobile Apps folder, and create a shortcut in the iTunes folder pointing back to me new location), but this didn't work at all.
Is this do-able? As as alternate, can I just delete all the Apps from my MacBook Pro's iTunes library (from within the app) without screwing up the syncing or (via iTunes Match) inadvertantly deleting them all from the iMac as well?

How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

It's a challenge when syncing a device for the first time to go through all the apps and apply them back to the same folders as on your other iphone.
I've seen suggestions of taking pictures of the correct layout, then manually applying it to the new device. Big time waister.

I'm afraid there is no short workaround. One thing that you could do if you were REALLY desperate is reset your device to factory settings and then restore it from your other device's backup, but that is rather risky and you probably don't want to take your chances just for folder layouts. I would just do it manually.

Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.
