Strange Apple Logo Behavior During Startup

I've got a 15" Powerbook with 10.3 installed on it that is exhibiting some strange startup behavior.
When the apple logo appears during startup, it briefly shakes and then becomes pixelated.
Startup continues after this, and the computer is not exhibiting any other problems.
However, I'm concerned that it might be a sign of a more serious problem that I need to address sooner rather than later.
I've scoured the discussion boards, but haven't come up with any other similar reports.
Any one have any ideas?

When the apple logo appears during startup, it
briefly shakes and then becomes pixelated.
That means that the computor is having a problem with your password... It is having problems recognizing your password, which it finally accepts....

  • No apple logo appears during startup

I am fixing this 2007 iMac for free for an autistic child. Apparently, changing computers for someone that is autistic isn't ideal. I don't have the history with this iMac, just that it isn't working. They supposedly did have the hard drive replaced? It sounds like a dvd is inside it when it starts up, could be the installation dvd?
Either way, I have not seen it before where the Apple logo refuses to show on the start up screen. It just stays gray.
    1. I've tried zapping the PRAM. Didn't have any changes.
    2. I tried starting up in safe mode, but getting passed the apple logo is required for that
    3. I tried single user mode, but getting passed the apple logo is required for that
    4. I tried holding the c key to start up off of the dvd, nothing happens
    5. I tried holding the mouse button (and cmd, opt, f, o) to manually eject the dvd during start-up.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Sounds like you've tried the conventional approach to removing a stuck CD/DVD. Not tried this myself, but there is this possibility (at your own risk, of course ):

  • White Screen, Apple Logo, Spinner on startup after failed software update.

Hi, so my Macbook was performing poorly this morning and I decided I would try to install updates. The updates started normally, but around halfway through the bar stopped moving and the text underneath it said, "Running Installer Script." I left it alone for about three hours, came back, and saw that it was still doing the same thing. I decided it was time to try to reboot, and foolishly held the power button down for several seconds until it turned off. Upon turning it back on, I discovered that it would only go as far as the white screen with the apple logo and the thing spinning under it for about 20-30 seconds, then the screen will go black and it will try to start up again. I started it in verbose mode and it gives the following errors before crashing:
    disk0s2 i/o error 0 [level 3] [readuid 0] [facility com.apple.system.fs] [errtype io] [errno 5] [iotype read] [pblknum 233675120] [lblknum 540]

I haven't tried booting from the disk because my disk drive has been broken for a while and needs to be replaced. I assume this problem is my fault, but I would very much appreciate anyone's input on how to resolve it.

  • Aluminum Macbook stuck on apple logo page at startup

I have an 2008 Aluminum Macbook and when I try boot, it gets stuck on the apple logo page with the spinning wheel below it.  I have tried to boot in safe mode but i get the error messsage "disc02: I/O error" .  I tried next to reset the PRAM but no results.  I don't have the original installation disk so I cannot boot from there.  I have read that the problem may be the hard drive.  Is there any way to fix this problem or is there another way to run a hd diagnostic without the startup disk if that is the problem.

If it is the hard drive, you need the install disc to make repairs.
You may be able to purchase a disc from Apple plus shipping and handling.
Contacting Apple for support and service
You will need the serial number >  How to find the serial number of your Apple hardware product
You may be able to use fsck .. read here >   Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

  • Apple Logo Freeze at Startup

I'm on an older iMac (15" flatscreen) running 10.4.9. I shutdown to go on vacation and upon return cannot startup my Mac. It has no startup chime and merely goes to the screen with the Apple logo and no further. I've been on forum pages now for over 4 hours and have tried all suggestions from starting up from my install disk and running disk and permission repairs to complete Archive and Installs.......... Nothing. Right now I'm experiencing the blue screen of death with the spinning circle going on forever. Any help out there available?

There isn't a lot you can do from this point and you may have tried it all. I'll run through a quick list and if none of it works you'll want to see about backing up your data and then doing an erase and install. Here's the list:
    1. Disconnect all peripheral devices (including things like ethernet cables), except for the Apple keyboard and mouse, and display (if it's not a built in). Does it work? If so then it may be some conflict with the one of the devices that were connected. Try them all one by one and see if the issue repeats itself when one is connected.
    2. Remove any extra RAM that may be installed and try running it with different combinations of RAM (if you have more than one RAM stick). If you find it only happens when a certain RAM stick is installed, then replace that RAM stick.
    3. Boot the install disk and run disk utility. You said you've done this but check out this article in case you missed a step or something. It never hurts to double-check.
    4. Reset your PMU. I think this is the article for your iMac. If not search the Apple Support pages for reset PMU.
That's about all I can think of that may solve the issue. If you do need to do an erase and install then start up the computer while holding down the Option key. This takes you to the Startup Manager. If you see your hard drive in here then you should be able to use Target Disk Mode to back up your computer. If not then you'll probably want to take it in and have someone do it for you.
And here's the instructions for an Erase and Install.

  • IPhone top sleep/wake button is not working & Apple Logo screen at startup

I have the original iphone. I have two problems, both just happened tonight at the same time. For seemingly no reason just my iphone external top sleep/wake button is not working. I tried powering the phone off and back on. I tried resetting my iphone, and restoring it. I made sure my Iphone software is up to date. None of these remedies have fixed the button. The button doesn't look broken, it pushes in and out, it just doesn't work anymore.
Second problem is, after I power my iphone off and then back on, the Apple logo screen will continue to flash on and off indefinitely. The only way to get my home screen to appear is to connect my iphone to my computer. Then it wants to sync. After syncing it then asks if I want to "power off" or "cancel". Huh, why does is it doing that? To turn my iphone off I am pressing my Home button down until it shuts off, since I can't power off with the top black button. Is that the reason my phone is having the second problem, because I am powering off with the Home button? Could it be my second problem is not a problem?
My iphone 1 year warranty is over. I can't call Apple Care, there is no apple store near me. I need a solution I can do at home myself. Please help. Even if you think the answer is obvious please suggest it to me. Before tonight nothing was wrong with my iPhone. It all started after I let my 6 and 7 year old nephews play with Google Maps on my phone for like 10 minutes - supervised. I consider myself to be a pretty Apple tech savvy guy, yet I can't figure out if they broke my iphone somehow, nor can I fix these two problems. Please help!

    Jason,
I'm afraid I have good and bad news. Apple sent me a new original iphone. So that takes care of me but does not take care of the issue for so many people like you. I do not know if you can purchase the Apple Care plan at this time. Look into that. It really is worth it. Apple products require Apple technicians in the rare case the breakdown. Apple did not offer me an explanation of how they'll fix my phone or even saying why they sent me a new one. I synced it with Itunes and all my personalizations and apps are loaded back on it. It's like my old phone only shinyer and probably going to last me longer than the old one.
I found out Apple Care covers the Iphone for 2 years past it's purchase date. So I would think that you could buy Apple Care even if you had it for like a year. Then it would at least cover you until the 2 year mark, which after that we're on our own(?). Please let me/us know if you were able to buy Apple Care protection and if they fixed your problem. I am impressed they got me a new phone so fast. I still love Apple.

  • Strange POST logo behavior on a Z87 G45 Gaming

    Hi!
I recently did a build with this mobo, and everything seems to work OK except the OC genie produced bluescreens (didnt have time for a manual overclock). There's just this one thing that bugs me, which is that the POST logo "sticks" in the background as windows 8.1 boots up, so that the spinning circle of dots indicating the windows boot gets overlayed on top of the POST. It looks really weird, so I'm wondering if this is normal or is something wrong?

Take a photo of it and add a link to it.
I don't have access to the rig right now, since I assembled it for a friend. But it seems he fixed the problem by activating fast boot in UEFI, at least the logo doesn't overlap since in fast boot you only  see the white MSI logo on a black background.

  • Ipod touch 4th gen 32gb stuck at apple logo

my ipod randomly tried to reset unprovoked today and it is stuck at the apple logo screen at startup.
i have tried putting it into recovery mode and i have tried restarting it about 5 times.
every 5 minutes or so, it flashed to the white screen for half a second, goes blank for half a second, and then goes back to the apple logo again.
can anybody tell me what is wrong with my ipod?

I would try placing the iPod in DFU mode and then restoring it.

  • HT201263 My iPhone 5 is still frozen after this, doesn't work the sleep/wake button pressed with home button, only the Apple logo with a download line below (I was downloading a new iPhone version from iTunes and the cable disconnected)

Please help me, the window is frozen with the Apple and download logo.

First, Thank you a lot for answering my question!
My problem is that since almost 2 hours the window is black, with the Apple logo, and the startup line filled at the very beginning. I own a Macbook Pro, I noticed that this product USB ports are made for the original iPod and iPhone USB's entrances, not for the new smaller iPhone 5 USB connector, so if I plug it in all, the computer doesn't detects it, so I need to take a little out. Well, I downloaded all my apps, because this iPhone is new, so I downloaded my apps bought and stored on my computer and then installed the software.
Well, it reseted as you said, and then the window went just like I described, but accidentaly the cable went out a bit, cutting the installation process. Then it froze and keeps like that. I did the buttons thing, but doesn't work. Is there something I can do? Happy Holidays and thank you!

  • A streak across apple logo during startup??

I don't know anyone posted this before, but i look through a few page cant find any solution.
i just got my iphone 3G yesterday. I discovered the Apple logo had a so-called a cut/ line/ streak across on the apple logo during the iPhone startup.
is that the normal apple logo on iphone3G or there is something wrong with mine.?
    thx

There's already a post on this. You should do a search on this next time.
Anyway, look at the top nav of this page and then look at the first tab where there is an Apple logo. It has the same streak. Is there something wrong with this website?
No, it's part of the Apple logo so you're okay.

  • Gray bar under Apple logo during startup with 10.7.2

    Hi everyone,
first-time iMac owner since May 2011, I'm experiencing exactky the same problem described in the article Mac OS X v10.6: Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup, but with two important differences:
it never happened with the original the 10.6 factory-installed, and started to appear after upgrading to 10.7 at the beginning of August
my iMac, included in the HD replacement program announed by Apple in July 2011, had the HD replaced with a new one in October 2011
In addition to the behavious described in the KB article, it's worth noting that, when one finally manages to log in (and the gray bar may take one good minute to disappear, which happens after filling up to approx. 60-70% of its length), the iMac is barely unusable, as the graphic interface is suddenly **** slow and there's a lot of flickering.
Since seeing is believing, please have allok at the YouTube video I made on this "false start", as I named it: see iMac_falsa_partenza / iMac_false_start.
I had already reported the problem to the local assistance, and they had told me it was an evidence of the HD problem indicated by Apple. Then they replaced the HD  (...did they, actually? Probably yes, as the  HD now installed is far noisier than the old one), but the very same day I brought it back from the assistance, at the second start... bam, here's the nasty gray bar again.
I didn't further report the problem to the assistance because my faith in their capability has cracked and because the simple replacement of the HD took them  three full weeks. But this "false start" issue really, really bothers me a lot, as it happens every other day.
How can I have some good Apple expert technicians take this problem seriously and help me solving it?
As a first-time owner of a Mac, I have onestly to say I'm much, much disappointed by this story... Thanks anyone for any help.

  • 'Wobbling' Apple logo - Strange Behavior on Start-Up

Couple of days ago my iMAC started behaving strangely on starting-up.
Having pressed the on button the grey Apple logo appears on the white background but there is a lot of distortion. The logo is wobbling and there appears to be hashes all over the screen.
After a while the blue OS X screen appears with the progress indicator, which looks fine. Then it goes to a grey screen with hashes all over it and does little else.
When I turn the machine off using the power button it normally restarts okay and I can use the machine normally with no problems occuring. Turn the machine off for more than an hour or two and the problem recurs!
The only piece of software I've downloaded recently was iStumbler because I was having issues with interference from neighboring wireless modems but I can't see how this would affect the start-up routine.
Any help would be most gratefully received.
    Duncan
PS: I’ve performed a hardware test and everything passed OK!?

Sounds like a classic case of the iMac G5 first generation capacitor issue to me, Duncan.

  • Apple logo turns into a square during startup

When restarting the computer, the Apple logo turns into a square (of various pixels). The computer seems to act normally after several slow startups. Prior to this I had to force quit finder a couple of times in a row and do a hard shut down. Don't know what happened to cause this.
    powerbook 5.8, 1.67, 80HD, OS X 10.4.11

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!

  • Startup display flashes Apple logo, circle w/ line ,question mark folder

I attempted to install OS 10.6 SL and during initial install and restart my MBP display started flashing the grey Apple logo, circle with angle line thru it, and file folder icon with question mark in center. I can not get my MBP to restart. It just keeps flashing the symbols. as described.

After trying to get the system to start either with the install disc DVD or from the HD, without any success, I tried something a little desperate. I replaced the HD with the one that was installed originally. Of course, this HD was reformatted without any system. It, again, tried to start from the install disc DVD, as directed, but with no solution. After a gray logo screen for a couple of minutes it stopped the startup process, but did not shut down, I was still left with a black screen and nothing happening, until I hit a key and the whole thing repeated itself. I have since gone back and reinstalled the larger HD with OX 10.5 installed on it, but with no success. Obviously, it doesn't seem to be anything on the HD. If this was a PC I would think that I needed to reset the BIOS, but I am not that familiar with the ROM. Any further suggestions?
