Strange apple mail

since mac os x 10.8, apple mail is like «hanging» after sleep.
this means that some accounts cannot be [re]connected - the problem-triangle appears.
it seems to happen only on imap-, not on exchange-accounts.
restarting the application helps.
checking the activity screen before quitting shows some entries in the list (looks like hanging - no move at all).
this tasks cannot be canceled.
this behavior is very annoying.
it was not like that in mac os x 10.7 and below.
thanks for any ideas.

Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

E-mail messages that I either sent or received months ago are showing up in my mailbox and receivers' mailboxes. • Apple Mail, strange inbox messages deletion

I’m curious if anyone experienced something similar to this… We’re 10 people small business with all Macs. Apps we use are Apple Mail, iCal, MS Office 2008, Adobe Acrobat, and most other famous applications. For our email, we all use Apple Mail with IMAP. We used to use POP but we wanted to see same contents on Apple Mail, iPhone, and webmail, so we switched. One of the employees experienced strange problem yesterday, and I haven’t found exactly what caused that incident. She checked her email before she went to bed around 10pm, and there were about 200 messages in inbox. She did shut down her machine. Then, next morning, she turned on her mac and opened Apple Mail. There were no messages in her inbox. Over 200 messages got deleted or moved somewhere else. She found some in deleted folder, but still not everything. So, as I heard this issue, I checked on her web mail. Yes, I saw a bunch of messages in trash folder. So, I moved them all. I talked to our web host and made sure it wasn’t by them. And I’m the only one besides her who has her password. So, this seemed really strange, and I’m wondering what caused it. I’m curious if there is a software bug in Apple Mail. I do see some machines’ Apple Mail can’t quit, so the user must force quit. Has anyone experienced something similar? Thank you for reading my post. Appreciate your time.

    Hi Ernie,
Thank you for your reply and explination.
1/ Yes, the instructions did help. It was obvious, but I haven't ever used Mac's. They are the best, but switching over it's not the easiest.
2/ Have been thinking about changing to another mail client because of this (Thunderbird). Usually everything with iOS X makes sense, but having the MAILBOXES option and sub-structure (Inbox, Flagged, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash) is beyond me at the moment (a lightbulb might go off in the future ...)
3/ Not sure why, but now everything is working fine. Could be becuase of the update to iOS 6.

  • Apple Mail Search is acting strange

    Hello.
I have been having some major issue with Apple Mail (6.5) in its search function.
I have been a heavy user of Apple Mail (over 15,000 emails on the program- and archived every year) for many years, and never had this issue.
When I search for a key word it does not find it!  I noticed that this not to work on emails in my In Box or Sent Boxes (Gmail email POP).  If I move a specific email to a newly created folder On My Mac and then search, the keyword will be found in the email in that new folder- but never on the orignal Inbox or Sent Box!  Also, the search works fine for senders of emails (by name) if I search for them.
The issue is mainly in finding a key word in the content of an email and particurly in the In and Sent boxes!
I tried EVERYTHING I could find online from reindenxing the whole Macintosh HD, deleting Envelope Files... I even deleted Apple Mail and then reinstalled it from Mountain Lion DVD!  STILL same issue.
To test things, I exported Mailboxes to another Macbook Air I have (brand new) and then imported these mailboxes into the correct location (Inbox, Sent...etc), and the search there worked fine!
ANY IDEAS, as this is frustrating and I am seriously considering switching to new email client after all these years.
    Thanks,

The mail search uses Spotlight to find results, so your problem may be more of a corrupted Spotlight index. To recreate your Spotlight index, go to System Preferences->Spotlight, click the Privacy tab at the top, and add your Boot drive here (usually Macintosh HD). Close and re-open this preference page and then remove the Macintosh HD from the privacy tab.
Within about 30 seconds, you should notice the Spotlight magnifying glass icon in the top menu bar will say it is indexing, and it may take about 15+ minutes to complete. Hopefully that will return your missing search results in the Mail.app.

I did a testrun with Litmus and all other mails works as expected. Even Apple Mail 5 and Apple Mail 6
Is this a bug in Apple Mail or do I miss something?

I wonder if this is the same problem that I encounter:
I receive faxes in my inbox as tiff files and before Mavericks I could view them properly in-line .. but now only the first one I go to displays correctly .. all other received faxes show this same image.
If I "open" the attachment it is properly displayed .. but in-line it is always the same image that displays .. the first one that I go to when opening Mail.
As far as I can see it is only tiffs sent by my fax-to-email service that show up improperly .. other in-line attachments such as PDF's seem unaffected and display correctly.
I thought that it was related to the coverflow issue that was fixed by the 10.9.1 update .. but no such luck.

  • IMAP Gmail + Apple Mail = strange behavior?

I'm using Apple Mail 3.0 and Gmail IMAP. I have several mailboxes (Gmail calls them "labels", I guess) set up in Gmail's webmail application, and they are mirrored on Apple Mail. I have also set up Gmail to download mail from three different POP account.
Here's the problem: for some reason, when I click on a message that has been downloaded from one of the POP accounts in the inbox in Apple Mail, it still appears as "unread" in Gmail webmail and in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Apple Mail.
Somehow Gmail doesn't know that I'm clicking on the message, so it stays marked "unread". Because it stays marked unread, it is not automatically deleted after 30 days as it should be (I've been told that the 30-day period is not related to the date the message was sent, but to the time it was first accessed.) This means that I have several months of old messages stored on the Gmail server (and in my Gmail folders in Mail) that I don't want there.
Or it means that I have to manually go into the Gmail "All Mail" folder, either on Gmail webmail or in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Mail on my computer, and manually click on the messages to mark them as read. This gets VERY tedious throughout the day.
Anyone else encountered this issue and figured out how to resolve it?

Sorry, I just noticed something. The problem is not only with the mail that comes in from the Fetch accounts. It also happens with mail sent to Gmail.
In the left-hand column of Mail 3.0, there's a folder called "Gmail" with a triangle next to it. Let's say a new mail comes into my inbox to my Gmail address. If I click on it in the inbox, it gets marked as unread in the inbox. However, I still see a "1" next to the Gmail folder indicating there's an unread message. If I click on the triangle to expand the folder, and then click on "All Mail", the folder seems to "update" itself and the unread email is marked as read (without me clicking on the actual message).
Otherwise, it seems to stay marked unread. Why is this?

  • Gmail no longer working with Apple Mail?

In the lasts 24 hours, without making changes to hardware or software, Mail has quit retrieving mail from my gmail accounts.
While I never receive any sort of warning about passwords or other issue, I simply get this:
And the "activity" window just stays that way... for hours with no result.  The Connection Doctor window:
The Church Email account is an old one that is no longer active... I just haven't removed it from my list.  But the "verify username and password" message is consistent... Strangely enough, down the same window - the SMTP connection works just fine. I can sent  mail from all of my gmail accounts using Mail... Considering that the user name/password is the same for both sending and receiving mail.. SOMETHING is funky with Apple Mail.
Anybody have a guess what to check? This is frustrating.

Did you change any setting in Mail? Did you change your gmail account password? Did you activate 2-step verification on your gmail account?
If you haven't done anything from above, maybe problem is with your network... Did you try to turn off your router for few minutes and then turn ON again?
Did you install any 3rd party security apps on your Mac? Did you enable system firewall? Do you use any proxy servers? Do you use VPN?
    There might be more questions...

  • Cannot get or send mail using Apple Mail on iPhone and iPad

Everyone in my household cannot get or send mail on their Apple Mail for iPad and iPhone. We all get the same message: "The user name or password for [account] is incorrect." This just started happening yesterday afternoon. No problems before that. I called my hosting company and Apple, and both blamed the other. My Apple system is always updated, so I have the latest version of Maverick. Had no problems with it up until now.
However, I awoke this morning to find downloaded emails in the same program, but when I go to "get mail," it says the same thing, and still won't allow me to send or receive.
Here's the kicker. I also use Gmail with the exact same accounts (yes, I need both since Apple Mail does things that Gmail doesn't, and vice versa). No problem! I get all my emails and can send with no problem. So, my hosting company claims it can't be them (makes sense). It only happens using Apple Mail, and I have several email addresses. None of them work (other than the strange phenomena of suddenly getting some of them downloaded for no apparent reason).
What do I do from here? I've changed passwords, deleted and tried to set up my emails, only to get the message that they probably will not work. And they don't. I have shut down and restarted my iPad and iPhone, to no avail.
Thank god for my Gmail account, or my business would be closed.
Again, this is happening on four devices in my home: 2 iPads and 2 iPhones.

I have a comcast account I use on my phone and use it for receiving and sending mail. When you look at the account in settings, you need to check each of these
    incoming mail server: mail.comcast.net
username: the part of your email address before the @
    password: your password
    outgoing mail server: smtp.comcast.net
    Under Advanced
    Use SSL: On
    Authentication: Password
    Server Port: 995
If you cannot make it work from changing settings in the account, delete the account and start over. Use the "Other" setting when starting the account. It is a POP3 account and make the entries I gave you. Once you do that, it should check the entries and validate the account. You shouldn't have any trouble from there. Those settings will work from either the iPhone on cell, or wireless. Mine will even work when I'm at home on my wireless there, which is on the Comcast network.
    Hope that helps you.

  • How can I email over 200 notes from my Apple Mail to that of a friend?

I helped someone recreate all their notes to work in Apple Mail and now simply need to get the notes from my Mac to their Mac. More details below. Thanks in advance. I've searched extensively on a solution to this and haven't found anything.
    - Garth
Dragging/dropping all the notes into a new email doesn't work.
Seems like I can attach to an email a single note at a time, but there are related issues:
-- The resulting attachments have an email-style icon which I find a little strange.
-- If I try to open such a sample note attachment in my draft email, it sometimes works (showing a proper, yellow note), it sometimes gives me a "Mail was unable to save the attachment..." error, and it sometimes opens it in a raw text format showing all the related codes/data.
-- At one point, I edited a note I had attached to a draft email and the attachment automatically appeared in my notes list even though I hadn't dropped it in there.
I don't see any other export option. "Archiving" isn't like exporting - it removes them from my Reminders/Notes view and archives them (for me) on a remote GMail server, it seems.
I don't know what to make of the "Forward" option -- it takes all the text from all the notes and drops it into the body of a single email. Is there a way for that to be rebuilt into individual notes for the recipient?
I don't have to use an iOS device for this, do I? I can if needed. I don't see a quick way to email many notes off my iphone to the recipient's email address. (I have iCloud; the recipient does not - they're doing all syncing via USB cable only.)

I assume this is a 1st gen and not the newer models (black box). In any case it is not meant to be used as a storage device and thus no easy way to retrieve

  • How do I fix an Apple mail account that is "confused"

Last week I moved a mail account from one host provider to godaddy.
I updated the incoming and outgoing mail servers in Apple Mail and did a "Get Mail".
Two new messages came in so it appeared everything was fine, however I realized Mail
was not retrieving any other new messages.  Mail does not report any errors, just does
    not retrieve messages.
When I "Get Info" on the account I can see 75 unread messages under "All messages on POP server".
For some reason Mail will not retrieve them.
I can log into the account via webmail and confirmed that the password is correct, and that the account
    is working properly.
I have deleted the account in Apple Mail several times and recreated as POP and IMAP with the same
    result.
Apple Mail seems to have "memorized" the account even after I delete it, it acts as if some preference
has incorrect information about which messages have been downloaded?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Keith

Thank you for the suggestions BDAqua!
The new Smart Mailbox was unable to retrieve any new messages.
Something strange about Connection Doctor, at the top of the window it reports "Internet Connection Status:  "Mail was unable to connect to the internet, click the "Assist me..."  button for help diagnosing the problem."  (this report is false because the other two accounts work).   When I click Assist me as instructed Network Diagnostics reports "This computer's Internet connection appears to be operating normally. Are you sure you want to use Diagnostics?"
All other status lights are Green within Connection Doctor, it reports "Connection and login to server succeeded" with all three mail accounts and all three smtp servers.
In safe mode, Disk Utilities repaired some permissions, no disk repair was required.
After moving the Cache files, Envelope Index and rebooting, Mail went through the Message Import process but there was no change.
I remvoved MessageRules.plist and backup, still no change.
I'm not getting a password rejection, no rejection or error at all.
In Keychain access I deleted every entry having to do with mail accounts and servers.  I reentered passwords in Mail accounts and still no change.
I'm using no SSL and ports check out.
After all the above I'm still in the same situation, have not found a way to create a new account that is capable of retrieving from my main email box. Very frustrating, I can't seem to figure out a way to bypass the "hidden" library file that's corrupt.
It's curious that the setting in Accounts>Advanced>"Account Directory" there is a "choose" button but you can't click it.  I was hoping I could chose a new location to fix the problem.
    Thanks for all your suggestions,
    Keith

  • Apple Mail OSX 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard) - Exchange Settings

Hi, I've been going through the forum for the last two hours and found a few posts with people reporting a similar / same problem as I am having.
I'm trying to set up my RGU e-mail account using the Exchange 2007 option as I'd quite like both my address book and iCal to connect to the RGU server. However, whenever I try setting my account up as an Exchange 2007 account, I get the message that
+*"Logging in to the Exchange 2007 server "pod51002.outlook.com" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct you cannot receive messages"*+
Both my username and password are correct but even if I hit continue and manually populate all the fields Mail will not accept my password / username, although it will accept it fine if I set up Mail to access my university account (it's an rgu.ac.uk domain) via Exchange IMAP.
Now the strange thing is that it works fine with my iPhone when I set it up to access my university account using Exchange - no issues.
I have asked our IT department for help, but they are at a loss as what would cause this problem. I have consequently asked them to reset my password and once that's done and I try setting up Mail to check my University account via Exchange, it works perfectly fine and everything is set up automatically using the auto discovery delver I guess.
Now, to make things even stranger, once I change my password (after his has been reset by IT) I'm obviously being prompted by my iPhone for the new password. However, Apple Mail won't prompt me and works fine with the old password for some time - last time it worked for 2 months but once I then change the password to my updated password (my own one after IT reset it), Mail, once again, causes problems and won't accept my password. If I then delete the Exchange account and try setting it up again, I once again get the message reported above: "Logging in to the Exchange 2007 server "pod51002.outlook.com" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct..."
Does anyone have any ideas how I may be able to fix this - RGU's IT department has worked with me on this issue for a very long time now and they can't figure out what causes this issues and all should be working just fine and if I do use Entourage, again, it works just fine, though I do have 4 different e-mail accounts (MobileMe and 3 Gmail ones), I don't really want to run two e-mail clients.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys may have to offer.

thanks j.v. yeah i've tried all that but still it doesn't solve the problem .... it something which started after the sophomore OS X Upgrade ... I do wonder if that may have somehow 'messed' up Exchange integration... but the oddest thing is it works for a while once my IT department resets my password ... and continues to work with the 'reset password' although I changed it

  • Apple Mail has gone completely screwy since Mavericks upgrade

    Hi everyone...
I truly feel like crying. I upgraded to Mavericks on both my main desktop and also my laptop and it seems that all of my mail on both the Desktop and the laptop has gone completely topsy turvy in Apple Mail. It seems like a lot of my messages are being routed in a completely different way! And most of them are simply disappearing to goodness knows where!
Why on earth when I send a message to my home email address at **@att.net does it land up in my Gmail Archived folder under one of Gmail's All Mail folders (for one of my Gmail accounts) even tho' I did NOT send to a Gmail account?
So many strange things are happening! And most of them are concering this "Archive" folder for Gmail.....SO MANY of my emails are being dumped into those Gmail ALL Mail folders when they were not even addressed to a Gmail account!! This is happening on both my laptop AND my main desktop...so I know that it is not just on one of the stations.
Also, I have been getting notifications on my phone of LOTS of messages that have been sent my way but they are not appearing in my mail app...and when I search for them I cannot find them...as if these messages have just vanished!
I cannot have this happen because I am now missing out on all of my work emails!
I have been sending a bunch of test messages to my **@chgraphicdesigns.com.account and I will see the message pop into the INBOX for just a second and then suddenly disappear. I am not able to find these test messages by doing a search for them either. What has happened to them?? I am now missing a TON of work emails I received earlier today...I had seen notification of them popping in throughout the day but was going to attend to them later due to a huge project I was working on...but now those emails are nowehere to be found!
I turned off Mail and tried out Thunderbird and that is working PERFECTLY, so it is just Apple Mail that is having all of these issues. This is just awful:(( It is so messed up I literally want to cry. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Thank you so much for your help in advance:)

I have managed to restore many of my emails from Time Machine, manually re-created many of my original mailboxes and re-populated them with the restored mail messages but after doing so I discovered another bug with the latest version of the Mavericks/Mail combo.  The bug that I am experiencing is that some of the emails in my folders are "invisible" when I open the folder and can only be located using a spotlight search within that mailbox for a term that occurs within the "invisible" email, at which time the previously "invisible" email is viewable but only in the results that the Spotlight search brought up.  When I close the Spotlight results, the email goes back to being "invisible" again in the mailbox from which it is identified as having come from.  I know that Spotlight ios not pulling it from some other mailbox that I might have accidentally placed it in, as Spotlight's search results indicate which mailbox the message was found in.  I never would have discovered this bug if it weren't for the fact that I was trying to locate a message that I knew to exist because I had previously printed a hard copy.  The date shown on my hard copy was non-existent on any messages in the mailbox unless I did a spotlight search for unique phrases in it, at which time it showed up.  Has anyone else noticed this problem happening to them?

  • GMail is not working with Apple Mail App: Login correct, says "no e-mails"?

    HI everyone,
I just switched from my iPhone 5 to a new iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.1.2. After I put the latest backup to the new device everything was set up fine. Unfortunately Google Mail doesn't work with the Apple Mail App any more.
I have two factor identification switched on and use the 16 digit long password which I set up with my Google account. The configuration details work (login, password, server details), the account is accepted, no notifications tell me that anything is wrong. The thing is, that the Apple Mail App doesn't show any mails. Also it's impossible to send any emails. The strange thing is, that the GMail App works fine.
I really tried everything: deleted the account setup, changed mail server from m.google.com to smtp.google.com, set up a new app specific password through two factor identification... no emails appear!
With my iPhone 5 I was a lucky user of push email, thanks to Microsoft ActiveSync. So I keep trying to configure the GMail account as an Exchange account (I know that Google switched off ActiveSync some time ago, until now everything worked fine with my iPhone 5, even push mail worked!).
Does anyone of you know how to solve the problem? I don't like the GMail App and really prefer using the iOS Mail App..
    Thanks in advance!

I have brought this to the Gmail support community, but so far no luck.

  • Apple Mail Pop Server Configuration

    Hi all,
It's not often I post on here but here we go. I have been using Macs ever since the Lisa Electronic Office and have always been perplexed by one strange quirk of the Apple Mail account configuration process. This quirk is now becoming extremely troublesome.
I use BT/Yahoo (I'm not talking about the famous password rejection problem). One main account and several sub-accounts which, for all intents and purposes, can be considered as separate accounts.
Now the problem arises because, while each has a separate email address, they all use the same pop server settings. ie. mail.btinternet.com.
Mail will not allow me to use two accounts with the same pop settings. I can set up and verify the account (doesn't stay on-line because SSL is set and the port is wrong) but when I come make a change and save it I get the message:
    Invalid Directory
The account path /Users/fredbloggs/Library/Mail/V2/[email protected]@mail.btinternet.com is already being used by the account “Another One”
Obviously I've changed the account names. Another One is one of my other accounts. I've got one working by using pop.btinternet.com but I've run out of working aliases. I should be able to set up 10 sub accounts and access them all with Apple Mail. IMAP works OK but that is something I don't wish to use for a number of reasons.
    Anybody else come across this?
I can do all this with Entourage (horrible) and Outlook which I do not intend to buy. Why does Apple make life so difficult sometimes?

    OK Folks,
To save confusion and to all those people who think I am using the same email address for everything, here they are.
         British Telecomm Residential
[email protected]          (USAAF 381st Bomb Group Heavy)
              [email protected]     (My company)
[email protected]          (Master Account for everything else)
         British Telecomm Business
              [email protected]          BT Business E-Mail - I don't use
         Others I have are:
              [email protected]
              [email protected]
              [email protected]
[email protected] currently exists as an IMAP account which works but something I would rather not have.
As you can see, they are all separate and distinct.
As I said before, all hese work just fine with Entourage (nasty and a dead product) and Outlook (something I'm not prepared to buy when the Apple offering should do it all for me and integrates really nicely with iCal, Address Book, Notes etc.
Thank you everybody for trying to help and thanks Defcom but, as you thought, that article is really old hat now.
I am now going to open a large bottle and sit in that darkened room.
If I now get flooded with spam, I know where it's come from.
Goodnight, Good Morning or G'Day depending on where you're from..

  • Can't edit rules in Apple Mail.

    Hello there:
For some strange reason if I try to add a new e-mail address editing a rule, well, everything seems to be ok, until I click "Apply" and nothing happens.
    Any help will be welcome.
    Best wishes, as always,
    Federico (aka euskir)

    Hello terriergal:
So far, in my case, no need to delete old rules, just to wait the new ones to be effective, and the two added were working ok.
Sometimes an interesting action before delete rules is to check if something change deleting Apple Mail preferences, or if you prefer just putting the preferences aside for a while.
    Best wishes, as always,
    Federico (aka euskir)
