Strange AppleScript Behavior Since Upgrade

Here's a weird one: After upgrading to Tiger, I also upgraded a very simple applescript that sets the sound volume. I use it on login in case I was "rockin' out" when I last logged off. The old script was simply:
set sound volume 2
but that syntax is now "deprecated," so I updated it to the new version:
set sound volume output volume 25
But this new script produces a strange error: "Can't make current application into type small real." HUH?
OK, so...I created another user account and tried it from a fresh account and it WORKED. So, I thought maybe there was something weird in the system. I did a re-install of Tiger using "archive and install" and then tried the new account again - it still worked. The old account still produced the weird error message.
So I began moving all my stuff to the new account. But in the process, thought I would check the script again. Now that I'm 98% moved into the new account...the script now causes the same error!
AAAGGGGHHHHH!
Has anyone had an experience like this? What do I do now?

Move half of your home folder's contents to the desktop, and then try the script again; if it works, move half of the items on the desktop back and try again. If it doesn't work, move half of the items currently in the home folder to the desktop. Repeat this process until you find the problem file or have run through everything. If you find the file, post back with its name and path, as knowing this may be useful in troubleshooting future cases of the same issue.

  • Strange behavior since upgrading

    I just upgraded to 7.5, and neither my icon by the start menu or the shortcut on my desktop work. I CAN get iTunes to run by accessing it through the start menu, but it will also no longer launch when I plug in my iPod. I run Windows XP.
    Also, the F drive window pops up whenever I have iTunes running and plug in my iPod, also when I play a song or purchase a song. The window sometimes goes away on its own, sometimes not, and seems to be more of a annoyance than anything, but why are there so many stupid problems with 7.5?
    Can anyone give me suggestions to make iTunes launch properly from the icons and when I connect my iPod, as well as for making the F drive window stop appearing all the time?

    Ok, here is what WAS happening, and how I fixed it. I hope this helps others out there who are experiencing the same difficulties.
    After upgrading to 7.5, at the end of the download there was some sort of problem, and iTunes wouldn't work anymore. I went back to the Quicktime part of the download, and repaired it (I think through my computer, I can't remember). I then checked to make sure QT was working by clicking on the shortcut on the desktop. Once that checked out, I went back and repaired iTunes.
    Then, neither my icon or shortcut would open iTunes. Also, when I plugged in my iPod, iTunes wouldn't open (it always had in the past). I could open iTunes by selecting it from the start menu, and after doing that a couple of times, my icon started working again.
    I was also getting the "F Drive" window popping up every time I tried to purchase a song, or play a song in iTunes, and also when I connected my iPod. I switched USB ports and now that has gone away.
    So: switch your USB port, repair Quicktime and THEN iTunes, select it from your start menu a few times, and it should work.

  • Strange Client Behavior after upgrading to 10g

    Hello Friends !!!!
    Here is my scenario:
    Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.3
    Windows 2008 Server SP2
    After upgrading from oracle 9.2.0.1.0 and Windows 2003 Server I'm facing a strange behavior.
    Many times over the days some machines do not release some table resources even having their status "INACTIVE" and the wait event "SQL *Net message from client" and wait class "IDLE".
    Therefore, i got a lot of locked sessions, and users complaining..... until I kill them
    The client machine was as well switched to Oracle 10g client....
    Have you guys got any tips about this scenario?
    Tks for any advice.

    About the lock queue:
    1. blocking session has an exclusive table lock on VENDEDORES table; this is very rare in application because most of the time not needed: application code should try to avoid to take such kind of lock.
    2. blocked sessions request a row share table lock: it looks like that VENDEDORES table is a child table linked to some parent table with a foreign key constraint and that an index on the child table foreign key is missing (this kind of lock is requested if you DELETE from parent table or update parent table primary key).
    About the lock session: this is the blocking session that is waiting since 19 seconds on client: it is likely an application issue: you should try to investigate what the client (aservice.exe) is doing while holding an exclusive table lock.

  • [SOLVED] forms looking strange in opera since upgrade to gnome 3.4

    Hi!
    I just upgraded my gnome installation to gnome 3.4 and now I see some strange rendering effects in opera regarding forms.
    First problem is that text fields now have an inner border. This creates a 3D effect but looks kind of strange because the text overlaps this inner border:
    The second (and more severe) problem is that entries of a drop-down menu disappear when they are hovered:
    I searched through gnome's and opera's theme settings but couldn't find any option that could change this behaviour. I also tried removing the .opera directory but it also didn't help.
    Can anyone confirm these problems and has anyone an idea how to fix it?
    Greetings,
    Michael
    PS: The screenshots were taken in this forum (search form) but can be seen on all other websites with standard forms.
    edit:
    fixed in opera 12 build 1406 (currently beta status and only available on AUR)

    Good idea, but it's set to Adwaita.
    -- edit:
    ok, this is definately a problem with opera and the new version of Adwaita. If I use the old Adwaita version, that's included in gnome-themes-standard-3.2.1-1, as GTK+ theme both problems are solved. But then other things look weird...
    I reported this to the opera team. A workaround is to set "Dialog Toolkit" to 1 (qt) or 4 (neither gtk nor qt) in opera:config.

  • Strange EDGE behavior since last Friday

    Hello,
    I work on the 7th floor of a large 8 story building in N Central NJ. Before last Friday I was able to get a constant 4-5 bar Edge signal in my office. 3G never worked in the building. However now, I will get a good 4-5 bar signal for maybe 20 minutes and then the phone will suddenly change to "No Service". Edge will sometimes come back, but it usually requires me to reboot the phone. If I turn on Airplane mode and then turn it back off the phone just displays "Searching...." and the Edge never returns. Strange thing is that if I am listening to Pandora radio or try to use Safari when the phone says "No Service" it sometimes still works. How can I have "No Service" and still be able to xfer data?
    Updated to 2.0.1 and it didn't improve things. Went and got a new SIM card and that didn't help either. How can I get a good signal and then all of a sudden have it drop to "No Service"? I'm not moving the phone or anything! Are others experiencing this type of problem? Do I have a bad phone?
    NM

    If your phone is able to receive data with "no service" showing, there is likely something wrong. Are you able to send or receive calls with "no service"? Remember, the signal strength meter has a built in lag, otherwise it would be fluctuating rapidly, especially indoors. If you move a phone in a steel framed building, it initially won't show a change in bars, but a minute or more later, jump up or down. The placement of your hand on the phone can also have a big effect. Never compare "bars" from one phone model to another.
    To get a more accurate measurement of signal, put your iPhone in "Field Test" mode. To do this enter <star>3001#12345#<star> in the keypad and press call. The "bars" will be replaced by a number - the actual signal strength in -dBm ( the lower the better). Numbers of less than -100 (i.e. -110) are getting weak.

  • Strange Graphics Problem Since Upgrading to 10.5.5

    Hi,
    I have a March 08 Octo core Mac Pro with 23" Cinema display which have both been trouble free until today. After waking the mac pro up from sleep the screen graphics were all messed up. I was able to clear it by moving the cursor over the affected areas. The computer also kept asking me for my wireless network password, but would not accept it.
    I re-booted and was confronted with the same screen again, only this time it connected to my network okay. Again, I could clear the mess by moving the cursor around. I tried re-booting again and once again the same screen. Now I get the screen whenever I turn the computer on or off. Once I have cleared the mess, the system seems to work fine.
    Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?
    Here is a picture of the screen.

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks, Safari/Adobe are constantly blocking access to PDF files

    Since upgrading to Mavericks, Safari/Adobe (Version 7.0 (9537.71)) are constantly blocking access to PDF files.
    I can intuit what this is all about, however, I can find no information about it... the Adobe Plugin/Safari is apparently building a "white-list" of "trusted sites," but I can not find any information about this white-list -- where it is stored, how to revoke permisions, how to "one-time" permissions, etc.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    I am experiencing this exact same behavior since upgrading to Mavericks, too.

  • ICal, Mail and Finder times all stuck since upgrade!  System clock O.K.

    Very strange problem:
    All of my calendar event times (in iCal), email message receipt times (in Mail), and file modification/creation times (in Finder) are listed as some time between 7:00-7:59 AM or PM, regardless of time of day! My system clock (as it appears in the menu bar) is fine!
    More details:
    iCal: the events still look like they're at the right times, i.e. the blocks are in the right places, with the correct spacing, etc etc, they are just labeled with times between 7:00-7:59 AM/PM. Similarly, alarms go off at the correct time. Also, in the day or week listing, the column on the left which is supposed to show times instead just says "Sat" for all times, except "Noon" (at noon).
    This is continuous since upgrading to snow leopard a couple weeks ago. Seemingly no other problems besides this.
    I don't know much about the OS, but I don't understand how the system clock (in the menu bar) could be fine, but every other sign of time-keeping is completely off. I just its just something about the labeling of times, instead of the actual record of them?!
    I have screen shots of the problems if that might help clarify (apparently I can't attach them however).
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
    Any solutions to your problems?
    Just found my Mom has the same 'time stuck' problem (iMac OS X 10.6.7) Finder 'Date Modified' is stuck at 2/14/2011. Also, the Time/Date displays correctly on the Menu bar but when click on it, the drop down menu shows a gray out 2/14/2011, etc.
    Much appreciated of any help. Thx.

  • Since upgrading to LabVIEW 2013, every VI compiles every time I open it (including quick-drop).

    Hi all.  Since upgrading to LabVIEW 2013, every VI compiles every time I open it (including quick-drop).  This really slows things down!  Perhaps related, my system tells me I don't have permission/access to modify my LabVIEW ini.  Has anyone seen similar, and/or any hints towards a solution?

    As a side note, LabVIEW.ini is a file that gets generated by LabVIEW when it is launched if the file does not exist. So if you are missing the 32-bit ini file, launch 32-bit LabVIEW and that file should be created.
    I thought that the message: "Perhaps related, my system tells me I don't have permission/access to modify my LabVIEW ini"  might indicate that the labview.ini file cannot even be created... strange...

  • Cannot Access Disks on Time Capsule Since Upgrading to Mavericks

    Hey folks...
    So I've had this set up for several years, and it's worked out well. I have a time capsule with an external (self-powered) harddrive connected to it via USB. I usually access it via ethernet as the connection is more speedy than wifi, and my laptop generally remains stationary. For what it's worth, I'm using a Macbook Pro (mid-2010), with the original time capsule (500gb) as well as a connected Western Digital (1tb) external harddrive.
    Since upgrading to Mavericks, however, I have not been able to consistently access the remote disks, either by wifi or ethernet connection.  The time capsule shows up under my "shared" section of the finder window, but the drives (which are usually visible and accessible from within the time capsule) are not there. Strange enough, when I go into my Airport Utility for Time Capsule preferences, the disks are visible under the "disks" section.
    The time capsules' firmware is up to date, as well as the laptop's. I have tried reseting the time capsule as well as my computer in addition to simply unplugging/plugging it back in. I was able to access the disks on a fluke once in the last few days, but after moving the computer away from it's standard spot, the disks are once again no longer accessible.
    I had Server 2.0 but am unable to use it since upgrading the OS and haven't purchased Server 3.0. Any suggestions for solutions? Could residule configurations having to do with the Server functionality be affecting it? I'm guessing it is something to do with Mavericks.  Thanks for any help or feedback.
    Mitchel

    I don't have a guaranteed solution to your problem, just some suggestions:
    1) Try powering down the Time Capsule for at least 15 minutes, then plug it in again and see if it works better.
    2) If you suspect that heat might be a problem, try raising the Time Capsule to give better air flow below it.  I have mine on an inverted plastic-coated-wire basket of the type used to organize kitchen drawers.
    3) If AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule, you should be able to use the "archive" function (in the Disks panel, Disks tab) to write the disk's contents to a drive connected to the Time Capsule's USB port.
    4) In the worst case, you should be able to access the files on the Time Capsule's disk by opening up the Time Capsule, removing the disk drive, mounting the drive in an external enclosure, and attaching the enclosure to your Mac.

  • Safari will not open home page and other glitches since upgrade

    Strange stuff happening since I did the Combo Upgrade 10.4.11. Safari will not open to my home page. I have used preferences to set the home page but closing Safari and restarting still opens a blank page with no URL in the address box. I also noticed that several pages I have opened that have log in fields don't allow tabbing to the next field. I have checked all the preferences and every thing seems right. I have trashed Safari and its preference folder, downloaded the upgrade and used Pacifist to reinstall Safari. I used Disk Utility to repair permissions. Still I can't can't get a home page to load. Before the reinstall, I synched with .Mac to save my bookmarks and synched again afterwards to bring them into the fresh install of Safari. What should I do now?

    Here is a culmination of my searching and efforts that fixed this issue for me. I find it necessary to run Disk Utility more frequently.
    1) Trash Safari preferences in all user accounts:
    Computer/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    2) Empty trash
    3) Move files from Input manager to desktop
    /Users/YourUsername/Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    4) Restart computer
    5) Close Safari if automatically opens on restart
    6) Open disk utility: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    7) Verify permissions
    8) Repair permissions
    9) Reopen Safari
    10) Return Input Manager files from Step 3, ONE FILE AT A TIME from Desktop to Input Manager Folder and Restart between moves.

  • Bug in my code or strange memory behavior ?

    Hi, Guys !
    It's been a while since I post something in this forum - trying to use your help when it's really needed.
    So, here we go ...
    (we use Oracle 8.1.7 on Unix box and SQL * Plus 8.1.6)
    While back I wrote "core" PL/SQL package that resides in let's say DB1 database. It has RECORD_EXISTS_FNC function designed to dynamically check If the record exists in certain table/view. Assumptions are that you pass in :
    Table/View name, Column name, and unique numeric value (because by DBA rules all of our Tables have SEQUENCE as a Primary Key. And I plan soon to put in overloaded function to accept unique character value)
    Also every Table has SYS_TIME_STAMP and SYS_UPDATE_SEQuence columns that populated by Trigger before Insert/Update representing Last Update time_stamp
    and how many times record was updated within same second.
    (in case more than one User updates same record in same time - that was written before Oracle had more granular date/time). So function has SYS_TIME_STAMP and SYS_UPDATE_SEQUENCE parameters (optional) accordingly.
    And It looks something like :
    FUNCTION RECORD_EXISTS_FNC
    (iBV_NAME IN USER_VIEWS.VIEW_NAME%TYPE,
    iPK_FIELD IN USER_TAB_COLUMNS.COLUMN_NAME%TYPE,
    iPK_VALUE IN NUMBER,
    iSYS_TIME_STAMP IN DATE DEFAULT NULL,
    iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IN NUMBER DEFAULT NULL) RETURN BOOLEAN IS
    TYPE REF_CUR IS REF CURSOR;
    CR REF_CUR;
    i PLS_INTEGER DEFAULT 0;
    vRESULT BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE;
    vQUERY USER_SOURCE.TEXT%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    vQUERY := 'SELECT 1 FROM ' || iBV_NAME || ' WHERE ' || iPK_FIELD || ' = ' || iPK_VALUE;
    IF iSYS_TIME_STAMP IS NOT NULL AND iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IS NOT NULL THEN
    vQUERY := vQUERY || ' AND SYS_TIME_STAMP = TO_DATE (''' || iSYS_TIME_STAMP || ''')
    AND SYS_UPDATE_SEQ = ' || iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ;
    END IF;
    IF iBV_NAME IS NOT NULL AND
    iPK_FIELD IS NOT NULL AND
    iPK_VALUE IS NOT NULL THEN
    OPEN CR FOR vQUERY;
    FETCH CR INTO i;
    vRESULT := CR%FOUND;
    CLOSE CR;
    END IF;
    RETURN vRESULT;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    IF CR%ISOPEN THEN
    CLOSE CR;
    END IF;
    INSERT_ERROR_LOG_PRC ('CORE_PKG', 'ORACLE', SQLCODE, SQLERRM, 'RECORD_EXISTS_FNC');
    RETURN vRESULT;
    END RECORD_EXISTS_FNC;
    So the problem is when I call this function from let's say
    database DB2 (via db remote link and synonym) and I know exactly that record does exists (because I am selecting those SYS fields before pass them in) - I get the correct result TRUE. The other programmer (Patrick) calls this function within same DB2 database, within same UserID/password (obviously different session), running exactly the same testing code and gets result FALSE (record doesn't exist, but it does !) He tried to Logoff/Login again several times within several days and try to run it and still was getting FALSE !
    I tried to Logoff/Login again and I was getting mostly TRUE and sometimes FALSE too !!!
    I thought may be It has something to do with REF CURSOR that I use to build SQL on the fly, so I changed to NDS
    using EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement - nothing changed.
    vQUERY := 'SELECT COUNT (1) FROM ' || iBV_NAME || ' WHERE ' || iPK_FIELD || ' = ' || iPK_VALUE;
    IF iSYS_TIME_STAMP IS NOT NULL AND iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IS NOT NULL THEN
    vQUERY := vQUERY || ' AND SYS_TIME_STAMP = TO_DATE (''' || iSYS_TIME_STAMP || ''') AND SYS_UPDATE_SEQ = ' || iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ;
    END IF;
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE vQUERY INTO i;
    vRESULT := NOT (i = 0);
    RETURN vRESULT;
    Interesting note : when Patrick doesn't pass SYS parameters (Time_stamp, Update_sequence), or passes NULLs - function always finds the record ! (Statement 2 below)
    May be it has to do with the way TO_DATE () function gets parsed in that dynamic SQL - I don't know ...
    Here's the test code :
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON;
    DECLARE
    SYS_TIME DATE;
    SYS_SEQ NUMBER;
    bEXISTS BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT SYS_TIME_STAMP, SYS_UPDATE_SEQ INTO SYS_TIME, SYS_SEQ FROM LOCATION_BV WHERE PK = 1;
    bEXISTS := CORE_PKG.RECORD_EXISTS_FNC ('LOCATION_BV','PK',1, SYS_TIME, SYS_SEQ); -- STATEMENT 1
    --bEXISTS := CORE_PKG.RECORD_EXISTS_FNC ('LOCATION_BV','PK',1, NULL, NULL);        -- STATEMENT 2
    IF bEXISTS THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('TRUE');
    ELSE
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('FALSE');
    END IF;
    END;
    I asked our DBA, he has no clue about this strange inconsistent results.
    I debugged line by line, extracted that generated SQL and ran it in same account - works fine !
    Does anyone knows or have clues or can help what's going on ???
    I don't know If this is bug in my code or strange memory behavior ?
    (Please let me know If anything unclear)
    Thanx a lot for your help and time !

  • Just want to ask about the full screen icon that used to be on the play bar but seems to have disappeared since upgrade to mountain lion, any way to get it back?

    Since upgrading to mountain lion I've noticed the full screen icon which used to be on the playback bar in quicktime has gone, I know you can go to the menus to make it full screen but if you're watching something online like with apple trailers I can't seem to make them fullscreen anymore, is it me or have they just taken this option away now?

    I've been playing the trailers in my browser and the full screen option has gone for me,
    As already stated, the icon was replaced by the "Share" pop-up menu icon in the same location.
    and the command-f keys don't work either when I'm playing in a browser and it's truly only been since I upgraded to mountain lion.
    Strange! It works for me. Here is a link to a screen recording of me wayching a trailer in Safari and later watching a trailer download. In both cases the trailer could be expsnded for full screen viewing and then reduced back to the size of the original 720p player display screen. If you can't do this then you may have a player problem also.
    http://downloads.walker4.me/downloads/Temporary_files/ScreenFlow_6.mov
    Why did apple make these changes when they worked perfectly the old way, I mean if it ain't broke don't fix it!
    Only Apple whould know for sure but my guess would be that other users may have requested the "Share" pop-up more. Makes no difference to me because I normally use the key shortcuts anyway.

  • Strange issue with RAM upgrade: It works but it doesn't! Please help.

    Hello Everyone,
    I have a very strange issue with my iMac since upgrading my RAM from 4 to 12 gig. When I first installed the new RAM it booted up and ran great. The next time I went to boot the iMac up it swtiched on but didn't get as far as the first white boot up screen. I tried turning it off and on a few times using the power on/off button but still no success. I decided to remove the RAM and reseat it. The computer then booted up again fine. Here's the problem though: when I went to switch my iMac on the next day it wouldn't boot up. Again, I took the RAM out and put it back in and the iMac booted up fine. I've checked the status of the RAM in the system profiler and it reports that everything is OK. So, I'm at a loss. Obviously, I don't want to go through this process every time I want to start up my Mac. Any ideas/solutions would be very gratefully received.
    Many thanks in advance.

    I completely agree with you. It will be one of the 3 issues you outline. The machine was bought brand new and has never given me a problem. It is just the introduction of the new RAM that has started a problem. However, I did just risk a restart and it booted up fine. I don't know if a restart is any different to shutting down and then pressing the on/off button to start the computer. Maybe my last reseating has done the trick or maybe my thinking is flawed because restarting involves a different process to booting up by pressing the on/off button. I don't know.
    In the part of the world I'm sitting in it's night time now so I will leave the diagnostics running and check the results in the morning. I hope the issue is now resolved anyway. This sort of thing takes me back to my dark PC days although in this case I know it's probably not the Mac's fault.
    Thanks again. Very much appreciated.

    since upgrading to mountain lion my iphone no longer wirelessly connects to my itunes via wi-fi... is there a remedy for this?  thanks

    I am also having the same problem since upgrading to mountain lion. The symptom is strange.
    If I connect my iPhone/iPad using cable first, uncheck and then check the wifi sync option, and then disconnect the cable, iTunes will still be able to see the devices through wifi. But if I restart my computer, it will fail again. And I am tired of repeating this exercise.
    Anyone has the same problem?
