Strange arp value - is this normal?

Hi all
When I do arp -a I sometimes (but not always) get this response:
arp -a
? (192.168.0.1) at 0:1c:f0:61:b8:b5 on en1 [ethernet]
? (192.168.0.255) at ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff on en1 [ethernet]
The first value (192.168.0.1) is my own wireless router (DLink DIR-301)
What does the second one mean? I'm not aware of any device at 192.168.0.255, and ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff doesn't look like a real MAC address.
Please can anyone offer an explanation? Is this normal?
Thanks in advance
Bob

Maybe it only displays if there has been a recent broadcast. Any device on your network (192.168.0) wanting to contact all machines on your network will use the network broadcast address, 192.168.0.255. The corresponding MAC address is the Ethernet broadcast address, 6 bytes of all 1s (ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff)

  • LED lights behave strangely.....is this normal?

I just got a new laptop yesterday (G580, Pentium B960, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HD) and I've been noticing the following strange pattern in the LED lights (status indicators).
    1. When my laptop is off and I connect it to power, the power LED and the battery LED turn on, and they both keep blinking continuously in intervals of about 5 seconds. Is this normal?
    2. The power LED appears quite small when my laptop is off, but turns as big as the other LEDs when I push the power button to turn on my laptop.
    3. As soon as I turn on the laptop, the power LED grows as big as the other LEDs and stops blinking. Only the battery LED keeps blinking every 5 seconds.
    4. This blinking of the battery LED stops when my laptop is running on battery. So both the LEDs stop blinking when my laptop is running on battery.
Is all this normal? Sorry if I sound naive, but I noticed no such things with my earlier Acer netbook so I'm a bit concerned...this is my second laptop. Because its new, I'm a bit sensitive about anything going wrong.
    Thanks for the help....

    Hi ylenovo,
Thank you for posting and Welcome to Lenovo Community,
Congratulations on your new Lenovo purchase,
I’d like to confirm to you that when you connect the Charger and the battery is charging it will be blinking in Orange color within time about 5 seconds as you stated as this mean that the battery is connected and its charging,
But I’d like to ask you about the power led if its blinking could you please make sure that the laptop is completely off and not in sleep mode or hibernated,
And please share with us the color of the battery led which is blinking.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Soha

  • My Airport Extreme Signal output graph is jumping up and down like crazy, is this normal??

The Airport Extreme base station is the 5th Gen, and is about a week old.
All clients and the airport itself aren't moving.
Is this normal? To me it looks really strange. The graph should be smooth line if nothing is moving right?

The biggest problem I see that you will have is that both the 2.4 & especially the 5 GHz radio signals will have a difficult time penetrating through the concrete walls ... so I would suspect only the wireless clients in the same room as the AEBSn will be successful with a wireless connection with sufficient bandwidth.
If one of your network clients is a Mac laptop, you should use iStumbler again to get the signal and noise reading of your AEBSn in both of the rooms that are on the other side of the concrete walls from the AEBSn.
Better still; use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at these locations. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your laptop near the AEBSn, note the readings, and then, choose the locations where where you have each of your wireless clients.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
    SNR Guideline
    40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 25dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance for the wireless client from the AEBSn. If less, try relocating either the AEBSn or the wireless clients until they are within a 25dB SNR range.

  • Battery percentage indicator takes a little while to update when resuming from sleep - is this normal?

    Hi folks,
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro with Retina (13") and have noticed a pecularity with the battery indicator that I'd appreciate an opinion on please.
I've charged my MBPr battery to full (100% on the menu bar and green light on the MagSafe connector). I disconnect the power and close the lid which puts that MacBook to sleep. After leaving it overnight, I open the lid and and the unlock screen shows the percentage battery having gone down by a couple of percent (which I take to be normal) - e.g. 98%. However, when I unlock and get back to the desktop, it's still showing as 100%. Clicking on the battery icon, it shows as calculating the amount of time left. After about a minute or so, it tells me how much estimated time I've got left, and the percentage indicator updates to give me the correct percentage. When using it normally, the percentage indicator drops on the desktop as I would expect it to.
Is this normal for it to give the correct percentage on the unlock screen, but then to give the original (pre-sleep) percentage when unlocked, until it has updated and worked out how much time it's got left on battery?
I've read elsewhere that many folks have been having issues with the battery indicator since Mavericks rolled out, and there are some resets that can be done by pressing various key combinations whilst powering on. I've had the MacBook only a few days, and haven't installed anything on it - it hasn't even been connected to the internet yet - so I assumed that it should be working correctly from the off - unless there's something buggy with Mavericks causing this?
I would normally shut down a computer overnight, but I like how the MBP instantly resumes when I open the lid. Am also wondering whether it'll take a few charge cycles before the battery reaches full capacity and is properly calibrated. The system report shows that it shipped to me having undergone only 3 charge cycles to date.
Any opinions would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Gopha

    After some more testing:
Disabling the battery percentage indicator and then re-enabling it causes the percentage value to update to the 'correct' value. Rebooting the MacBook also causes it to update to the correct value.

    Hi
Time needed can depend on several things.
    • less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
    • Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
    I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
    Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
    • Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
    • Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

  • PS CS5 64 bit, but Bridge is 32 bit? Is this normal?

Photoshop itself is and always has been very robust, but Bridge gets persnickety sometimes, reporting low memory or just hanging, and when it hangs it really hangs... Today it was not responding and so I went into Task Manager (Win 7 Pro 64 bit) to end the process. I noticed that is is listed as a 32 bit program (Photoshop.exe is not). Is this normal? Seems strange to me.
    TIA,
    Toby

    It's 64-bit on my PC.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if it frightens you, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Shape outlines change size when skewed. Is this normal?

Good Morning InDeisgn Experts and Gurus,
I created a shape in InDesign CS5, and applied and outline to it of 4px.  However, when I skewed the shape, the size of the outline changed on the sides.
Is this normal? How would I remedy this, besides creating another but slughtly larger shape?  See attached image.
    Thanks.

I never noticed this before, but it seems the shear tool applies a live transformation at the original object -- you can see the shear angle in the control panel, and change it to something else, or even set it back to 0 to get its previous shape. Apparently, its outline is sheared along with it.
I know of only one way to force the transformation to "reset" to nothing: draw a very small rectangle right on top of your red object. Give it the same fill-and-stroke as the red object (use the Eyedropper tool for this). Select both, and then select Add in the Pathfinder panel. You will see that (1) the shear value in the control panel disappears, and is reset to 0°; and (2), the outline will behave normally.

  • Configured domain ID: 0x00(0) (preferred) --- is this normal for a principal switch

    Hi All,
I recently extended a VSAN using an EISL by adding an new cisco MDS 9222i switch to an existing production MDS 9222i switch.
Before extending the VSAN , i configured the VSAN on the new switch with a higher priority (160) value and different static domain ID (160) to avoid any issues when connecting the two switches together and to ensure the production MDS switch was still the principal switch. Note that the production principal switch had a "preferred" domain id of 120, not a static one.
After the successful extesion of the VSAN across the EISL , i noticed that the domain id for the principal switch had changed to 0 (preferred) for the VSAN, The running config stil showed that the Current domain ID was 0x78(120).
IS THE  "Configured domain ID: 0x00(0) (preferred) "  THE NORMAL THING TO SEE ON A PRINCIPAL SWITCH after two switches have been connected together?
I expected the Configured domain ID ID =  0x78(120) ] to remain unchanged and the same valuefor both the running and startup config ?
Can some one please shed some light if this is normal or is there an issue
    Thanks in advance

    Hi David,
I didnt change the domain ID on the principal switch. It changed it self to 0 (preferred) from a value of 120 (preferred), after i added an indentical switch switch into the fabric.
This is why i am puzzled with this value and i dont know fi this is a normal thing  to change the Domain ID value to 0 (preferred) on all  the principal switches in NX-OS once you have a VSAN which extends over multiple switches (core-edge switch configuration) ?
The running value of the ID is still 120, so i want to change the configured value back to 120 as well, but i dont know if this is a correct thing to do or not.
any help would be much appreciated.

The ~ indicates your User folder not the top level /Library/ folder.
Click on the desktop, then hold Option and go to Finder menu Go and Library will be there (only when holding Option as it is hidden).

  • HT1363 Got iTunes 11.0.2 and iPod classic. ITunes no longer connects to iPod - wiped all contents and there is no way to re-connect - is this normal?

Got iTunes 11.0.2 - as far as I know the latest version. My iPod classic no longer connects - gone through all on the "help" still won't work. There is nowhere with the word "device" and the iPod has now been wiped clean. Is this normal with the new version?

You might want to try connecting to another computer with an older version of iTunes. If it connects, reformat it straight away just in case before adding your songs back in. Otherwise, you might want to seek for help at the official iTunes stores in your country. Chances are that the iPod might be corrupted, though iTunes being the problem can't be ruled out either.
