Strange artifact in some NEF and .dng files

Using a Nikon D80 with 4 GB Sandisk Extreme SDHC card; shooting full resolution NEF; Mac G5, Mac OS X 10.4.10, images are run through Adobe DNG Converter 4.1. Image is opened in Camera Raw 4.1 (and now 4.2) window within Photoshop CS3 Extended.
In some photos with dark areas, there is a single, tiny, transient on-screen artifact in form of a red dot, either two or three pixels square, which always appears in the same location against, say, a dark sky or trees. It can persist or literally disappear on its own after about two seconds. If the file is reopened in the same session, the red dot may not be there at all. If the loupe tool is used, it always disappears within the loupe after about two seconds, even though it may persist in the unmagnified screen. The good news is that opening the image as a .psd in Photoshop shows no sign of this anomaly, no matter how greatly magnified.
Note: It can also appear if I drag the NEF or .dng file over to Preview. But in this case, it does not disappear.
Does anyone have a clue what may be causing this?
A screen shot comparison from Camera Raw 4.1 is attached below. The left image shows the dot in place in the section of the photo and with the loupe. The right image shows the dot gone, but persistent in the unmagnified image.

Again, thanks, Thomas. Most, um, enlightening!  <g><br /><br />I've been shooting raw exclusively over the past six months or so. Camera Raw apparently did its job, which would explain why the pixel disappeared after a couple of seconds. I'll probably run the same image through Lightroom to see what happens.<br /><br />However, I can still see using .jpg once in awhile (family and friends snapshots destined for email or postcard-size prints).<br /><br />But then, the question begs, if other pixels are compensating for the bad pixels, does that materially affect overall resolution or appearance of the images?<br /><br />Although I've been aware of annoying "stuck" pixels on LCD monitors, I never really thought about how DSLRs deal with this.<br /><br />Neil

  • Import from HD folder with NEF and JPEG files-Can't see JPEG files

I am using Aperture 2 and I am trying to import from an external HD folder of images, with both NEF and JPEG files of the same photo. Using the import function, the import pane only shows the NEF file, not the JPEG file. Is there a setting somewhere that will allow me to see the JPEG file also, so I can import only the JPEG. (note: if I move the JPEG to a different folder away from the NEF file, then the JPEG appears and I can import it.)
PS I am importing only the JPEG because I have a Nikon D60, which is still un-supported.

You could import both, select all images afterwards, select 'Create version from master jpeg'(alt-J), unstack all (shift-cmd-K while everything is still selected), sort by file size to separate the raws from the jpegs, and delete the raws.
Or run the raws through Adobe's DNG converter (which in its newest version, 4.4, supports the D60) and use the DNG baseline support until Apple (or rather Aperture) supports the D60.

  • Camera raw and DNG files appear as generic icons

Camera raw and DNG files appear as generic icons instead of image previews (Bridge CS5)
    What can I do ?

    Hi Yammer.
First thanks a lot for taking your time to help me. I am really happy about it!
    I will try to answer:
    1)
I meant by having the Camera Raw.8bi placed in BOTH "C:\Programmer\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5\Plug-Ins" and in C:\Programmer\Fælles filer\Adobe Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats" the ACR will be found in two versions - or rather in two places (I know the former shouldn't be, but it solved my preview problem).
    2)
YES - I do have tried twice starting the Adobe Bridge holding down the Ctrl-key and ticking the two (the third was greyed out but ticked anyway) and with no help.
    3)
I have tried to do the *.8bi search you suggested, and this gives me the following dump - absolutely with a few more entries than yours. Some are like doubled.
Do you think I can just delete these?
    Kind regards, Jan

  • How to keyword both NEF and JPG files?

I use a Nikon D300 and shoot NEF+JPG. I ingest the files to my hard drive using Downloader Pro and then import them into Lightroom. Lightroom apparently "stacks" the NEF and JPG files together, and the thumbnail is shown as filename.NEF+JPG. When I keyword the files, the keywords are applied only to the XMP sidecar to the NEF file, and not to the JPG files.
While I guess this "NEF+JPG" is called a stack, this appears to be some kind of special stack, as I cannot unstack the images and keyword them separately. Selecting "Stacking->Expand all stacks" does nothing. "Stacking->Unstack" is disabled.
How can I get the keywords applied to the JPG files as well as to the NEF/XMP files?
    Thanks.
    Guy

OK, I found that option and will try it.
What's the best way of recovering the directories I have already imported with NEF+JPG files? I presume I could delete those directories from the LR database and import them again. (I have enabled the option always to write to XMP.)
That would, I hope, give me both NEF and JPG files showing up in LR. Is there an easy way to copy the keywording from each NEF to the corresponding JPG file?
    Thanks.

I have stopped and restarted the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service and the UPnP Device Host Service; I also linked a Windows Live ID but this did not help. All devices have access to my PC and my TV has the latest software.
    I have Windows 7 and WMP 12 and according to my TV specs, the DLNA supported formats are: MPEG1/ MPEG2PS/ MPEG2TS/ AVCHD/ MP4Part10/ MP4Part2/ AVI(XVID)/ AVI(MotionJpeg)/ MOV/ WMV/ MKV/ WEBM/ 3GPP/ MP3/ WMA/ LPCM/ JPEG/ MPO
I would appreciate any help you can offer.
    Thank you

It seems to be an issue with Sony Bravia TV. According to the following article:

  • Rate and label both nef and jpg files

Hello everyone, this probably sounds like a silly newbie question, but is there a simple way to rate and label both the nef and jpg files in bridge.
I work on a pc and right now I have to click on the nef file then ctrl click the jpg file then ctrl #(1-9) to rate both. It seems like a lot of work. When I use batch processing to rename my files it processes them both so i get a raw and jpg with the same name, so why not with labels?
I'm trying to create an easy working flow to my folders and pictures. My camera settings are set to raw (nef) and jpg. I like to have access to both incase i need to send out a jpg etc etc.
Can someone point me in the general direction on how to keep my workflow clean and simple and how to affect both files, because this is becoming really tedious!
    Thanks

Well, first of all, it seems to me that you are creating a lot of extra work for yourself by creating your NEF and a JPEG. If any adjustments have to be done then you have to apply to those adjustments to two different images rather than just one. I think it's going a little far, personally, to have a JPEG copy of every image "just in case" you need to send out a JPEG. Why not just create a JPEG from the NEF file when you need one? But it's your workflow and you can do what ever you want.
Yes, I realize my second suggestion didn't solve the problem. But the problem cannot be solved with Bridge, at least the way it is right now. You have to select the images that you want rated. It just seems to me that your are compounding your work by creating both images all the time. If you have a certain need where you need to produce JPEG images in a hurry for someone, I can understand using the feature. But when it is so easy to create JPEG images that have all of the adjustments, I don't understand the need to have a duplicate JPEG of every image. Again, it's your workflow.
You might speed things up a little bit by going into your Bridge preferences and fix it so that you don't have to hold the control key when applying star ratings. Then you can just hit the number and then the arrow keys to move to the next one.
Another very simple method of creating JPEG copies is to use either the Image Processor or Dr. Brown's 1-2-3 processor, which is a free download from his website. Again, I just think you are creating a lot of work for yourself by having JPEG copies of every image. Unless you are an absolute masterful photographer who never has to make any adjustments to your images, you are doubling the amount of postprocessing required. I promise, I won't interfere in this one anymore.

  • I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files.   What am I missing here?

I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.

  • Some programs and video files dont work.

Some programs and video files dont work, get a crash report everytime I close, even after an uninstall everything and re install.
So I try playing some videos and it gives me an error, which I can watch on Chrome. Soundcloud doesnt seem to work, again works on chrome, and before I could watch WebM's but now it says not supported MME. Also everytime I close I get a crash reporter. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but nothing seems to work. I just happened recently. Also cant play soundcloud. Tried everything, feeling like going to chrome where things work and support is actual support

Protected mode works on some systems and not others. Since two of your four crash reports were related to Flash, I thought it was worth a try, but it's up to you whether you want to try it.
I'm not sure whether the issue with WebM video is a setting issue or a program files issue or a system issue.
    '''Create a new Firefox profile'''
A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
Don't delete anything here. Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
Click the Create Profile button, choose a name like TESTING, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
Any better results with WebM video or shutdown?
When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.
    '''Clean Reinstall'''
A regular reinstall may leave some stray files in your programs folder. This method is a bit cleaner.
    (1) If needed, download a fresh installer for Firefox 30 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)
    (2) Exit out of Firefox.
    (3) Rename the folder
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox
    (4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
    Does Firefox behave more normally?
Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:
    * C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox\Plugins
    * C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox\browser\plugins

  • Unable to see converted NEF to DNG files in Photoshop CS

Aloha, my laptop recently crashed and I am in the midst of trying to restore my laptop to the way it was.  I am using Photoshop CS and back in December 2009 I downloaded DNG converter.  I am using a Nikon D90, shooting in RAW.  I don't recall what I did after downloading the DNG converter but I was able to convert the NEF files to DNG by simpling clicking on the DNG icon, selecting the file and click convert and the NEF were converted to DNG files.  I was able to use my Photoshop CS with these covverted files.  In the restoration of my laptop, I loaded my Photoshop CS program and then did a search on-line for the DNG converter.  I found a 5.6 version and later a 6.3 version.  I first downloaded the 5.6 version.  I then clicked on the icon, selected the files and click convert.  I can see the NEF photos being converted.  However, when I went into my Photoshop CS program, I did not see any DNG files even though I saw the files being converted.  I downloaded the 6.3 version and got the same results.  I also went into Change Preference and selected Camera Raw 2.4 and later.  But I though I am seeing the files being converted to DNG, I do not see any of those converted photos in my Photoshop CS program.  Can anyone help me?  Am I missing a step or two?  I would appreciate y'all expertise in this matter.  Also, anyone knows how to uninstall one of these DNG converters I downloaded?  Thank you very much, Ron

    Aloha Jim,
I went on Google and typed in DNG 6.3 converter.  The following appears:
Product Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter Version 6.3 Platform Windows File
    Name DNGConverter_6_3.exe File Size 50.6MB
    Proceed to Download<http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4924&fileID=4585>
I click on the proceed to download.  The follow appears.
Camera_Raw_6_3_updater.zip - ZIP archive, unpacked size 37,629,269 bytes
I assume I'm supposed click on this icon that looks like three stacks of
books and having the information next to it, Camera_Raw_6_3_updater.zip -
ZIP archive, unpacked size 37,629,269 bytes.  After clicking on the icon, I
come on a window that says, Camera_Raw_6_3_updater.zip - WinRAR (evaluation
copy).  In that window there are 4 folders. The first one does not have any
information except for 2 dots.  The second folder is labeled META -INF.  The
third folder says, payloads and the last is like a window, rectangular in
shape, white at the bottom 3/4 and the top portion is blue.  It is labeled
AdobePatchInstaller.exe.  Again, I am assuming I am suppose to click this. I
click it and then it looks like it is updating something, then a window that
says, Adobe Application Manger comes on which says, some updates failed to
install.  Another messages says, update is not applicable.  I don't recall
what I did next...tried other things but I finally got the icon (circular,
the top 1/3 white with 4 red letters, the bottom 2/3 greenish with a blue
arrow pointing down.  It is labeled as DNGConverter_6_3.  I clicked this
icon and get this open file - security warning window.  It states, the
publisher could not be verified.  Are you sure you want to run this
software.  Name: DNGConverter_6_3.exe. Publisher: Unknown Publisher; Type
Application; From C:\Documents and Settings\(other info.  I click on the Run
button  I then get an error message saying, Installer integrity -check has
failed.  Common causes include incomplete download and damaged media.
Contact the installer's author to obtain a new copy.  More information at:
    http://nsis.sf.net/NSIS_error.
I don't know what to do.  Back in December of 2009, all I did was downloaded
the DNG file that I found on Google, click on the DNG icon, and my NEF were
converted so I could see it in my Photoshop CS.
Am I doing anything wrong.  I would prefer not to invest $200 for Photoshop
CS5 since Photoshop CS along with DNG converter were meeting my needs.  I
know it may take some time to write this but perhaps could you write down
the step by step process you would do from searching for the DNG converter,
selecting the converter, downloading the converter, activate it so
everything is set up for use with the Photoshop CS.  I would appreciate it
very much.  It has been very frustrating and time consuming in trying to
resolve this issue.  I thought it would be so simple setting it up like the
first time when I first installed it.
Thanks again for responding to this matter.  I appreciate it very much.
    Aloha

  • LR 3 and DNG files created and edited in LR 2

Workflow had been to import Nikon NEF files, convert to DNG in LR2, do my edits, and save the data within the DNG file. Tried to upgrade to LR3 tonight, using the trial version while I wait for my package to arrive. The catalog migrated just fine, with the exception that the edited DNG files were ignored.
DNG files that had not been edited seem to have imported just fine. But what fun is that. I need access to all my DNG files to continue the editing that I had been doing in LR2.
I verified the DNG files were still on the computer. I then tried to sync one of the folders I knew had edited DNG files in it that hadn't been migrated in the catalog import. LR 3 refuses to acknowledge the files exist, and doesn't give me the option to import them. :-(
Is there some option or preference I need to set/reset? Is this a known bug or issue? Is there a workaround?
Computer is a Intel Quad Core with 4 GB running WinXP Pro.
    Thanks in advance,
    - Arved

I don't remember what the settings were when I imported the catalog. Whatever the defaults were.
Whatever happened during import, I should still have the option to add the files when sync'ing a folder? But I don't.
Neither LR2 nor LR3 will allow me access to the edited DNG files now. I've erased and am rebuilding the catalog (all pertinent info was written to sidecar and/or within the DNG file, so I'm not anticipating any problems with this. It's showing the expected 27,000+ files being imported). I think I'll try building the LR3 catalog the same way when I fire it back up, once I'm sure I'm back up and running in LR2.
    Thanks for the quick response!

  • Basic panel and DNG files

Can someone explain to me why, when working on a .DNG file in LR4 (4.3, to be exact), your get a different set of sliders in the Basic panel than when you have, say, a .NEF file open? This is most puzzling, as I am working from Scott Kelby's book, which shows the Highlights, Vibrance, etc. sliders available with a sample .DNG file open, but when I open the same file,  in that panel I get Exposure, Fill light, etc. instead. If I then open a .NEF file, I get different sliders. Is this supposed to be this way? Confused...

Rob is correct, it's a question of Process Versions...but you need to understand that LR does NOT change the PV willie-nillie. If you had previous settings applied by a prior PV, LR will respect those setting. To get the most recent PV, OYU need to decide to do that. You can click on the PV warning in Develop or apply the PV update enmass by using a Preset...note, PV 2012 is almost always better then previous PVs, but not always (if you relied on some of the previous PV's artifacts which could sometimes work well). So I suggest doing the update image by image to confirm the PV 2012 is, in fact an improvement...

  • Develop Settings and DNG files...where is the info stored?

I just converted my Nikon NEF files to DNG. Previously I saved all changes I would make to my photos in the XMP sidecar files. I'm confused how things are working now because I thought those same changes would be saved to the DNG file.
Now that I use DNG files, when I make adjustments to the develop settings in LR, are those changes ONLY saved to the catalog? Or is there a way to save them into the DNG file so I can bring them to LR on another computer and see my changes? I feel like when I had XMP files before with my RAW files, the develop settings were saved there in addition to the catalog, so my changes came with me... Maybe I'm wrong though.

    >Each of my RAW files also has a corresponding 10KB XMP file.
These are known as XMP sidecars and are applicable only to proprietary raw files (e.g. CR2, NEF, etc). Adobe have a policy of not writing anything back into a proprietary raw file (exception being date/time stamp) because the proprietary data tends to be undocumented. The XMP sidecar provides a safe documented means of storing the metadata corresponding to each proprietary raw file.
    > I understood that the metadata is written to the file itself, but apparently only to DNG JPG and Tif files - right?
    Correct
    >So, if this is correct, then all metadata except that originally written by the camera is saved in the XMP file on RAW files?
For proprietary raw files the metadata is written into the XMP sidecar, but for the other formats you mention it's written "into" the XMP block of the actual file.
    > Is the XMP file the information used by the Catalog? If I open a RAW image in Photoshop CS3 will the XMP information be read and applied when the file opens?
    Yes to both questions

  • Burning NEF or DNG files to CD

The "Export" function in Lightroom allows you to burn JPG files to CD, is there any way to burn the DNG or NEF files to CD (instead of just JPGs)?? Do you need to set up another Preset to burn DNG or NEFs? If so, does anyone know how this is done?
My reason to do this is due to my current workflow. Everything is done in Lightroom now (thank God!), but I archive my original NEF (will archive the DNG with the embedded RAW image when v1.1 comes out). I would like to burn my NEF/DNG files to CD right from Lightroom...I just can't figure it out or even know if this is possible.

Go to Export and from the pull down menu, select the JPEG Burn Preset.
Then Change Format to DNG or Original (whichever you prefer). And from the pull down menu, select Save Current Settings as New Preset.

  • AE stopped to open cr2 and dng files, PS still works

    Hi
I have a mac book pro 16gb OS 10.9.2 and worked over 6 months with AE and Photoshop CS6 opening and working with cr2 (Canon 5dmk3 raw) and dng (converted from magic lantern) files.
all went well. For no apparent reason (maybe any kind of update?) my AE does not recognize these files anymore. They just show up grey and not selectable in the open/import dialog.
I can still open them using photoshop with the well known dialog box for raw files. so somehow the raw importer seems to work? Tried adobes dng converter 8.4 but converted files do still not open.
Did someone encountered the same problem and found a solution? Thanx very much for your help!
