Strange artifacts in video

Hello everyone. I am having a strange problem which my Art Director can't seem to help me with. I'm working on a corporate video and at certain points in the video I want to transition to another scene using a insert wipe (starting from the upper left corner). The wipe works fine, what is causing all the problems is I'm trying to overlay a black crosshair pattern that moves along with the wipe. Whenever I try it I get these funky white lines on either side of my black lines and the effect looks like ****. I've gone back and looked at the graphic file and there is no white anywhere. I've tried saving the ping in both Interlace & Noninterlace nothing works. The funny thing is I've done this trick before & it seemed to work fine, but in that case I was using a white crosshair pattern. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Been there
I did a great effect on my AVID using a large black box with three square cut outs that slid accross the image and made it look like three windows all synced floating on the screen.
I tried to do the same thing on FCP to find those same white lines on the inside of my alpha box. I got it to look a little better after tryng deinterlace, flicker filter and blur, but no where near as good as it looked on the AVID.
I wish I could give you some great tip to make it look good, but I struggled with it for 2 days and could not get it looking perfectly clean.

  • Premiere 7.2.1 strange artifacts

    I have these strange artifacts in several files, with latest premiere cc version (see images): artifacts appear in premiere as well as in after effects, but they are not visible if same file is opened in bridge (or VLC player). These files are .mov encoded by Resolve. In previous premiere versions they didn't show any artifact.
    Could you kindly give me some advice ? Thank you !!

    I have had similar problems in the past where artefacts would appear in PP on certain frames, but not in AE or VLC and similar. Never got an explanation to what caused it and then all of a sudden they where gone when I updated PP. And since it didn't show up in my exported files I just chose to ignore it to save my sanity :).
    Now the black screen when CUDA is active is probably caused by something else. I assume it affects all videos, not just the ones with artefacts? I have seen a recent thread about problems with CUDA, NVIDIA drivers and the latest PP update, but I can't find it at the moment. Maybe Ann has some insight here...

  • Strange Artifacts In Text

    I've exported out a Self Contained movie file and the text in it looks fine. But after I compress the video down I'm getting these strange artifacts in the lettering. Check the images below. I messed around with the bitrate quite a bit and I'm still getting it. Help!
    http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g1...Picture2-6.png
    http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g1...Picture3-1.png

    Okay, I've created the text in Photoshop CS2 against a plain black background in white using Arial at 48pt. I then delete my background so there is just the text and save it out as a png. Then I bring the png into Final Cut for laying over top of my footage.
    My footage is HDV from a Sony HDR FX1 so it's sized at 1440x1080. I have been compressing using Visual Hub, at "go nuts" with a bitrate setting at 6000 and final size at 1280x720. I've also tried exporting using QT Pro with a photojpg codec set to Best.

    I'd been having the same issue. The strange artifacts in gtk apps seem to be specific only to certain gtk themes. They have nothing to do with xcompmgr, as jrs said, and they don't seem to have anything to do with openbox, either (I had much the same problem on awesome). Themes that use the Murrine engine or Aurora all seem to work fine, and probably other engines as well, but i'm not sure. I think the whatever engine is used by most of the Elegant (Brit, Cold Blue, etc) series of themes (pixmaps? can't remember) is to blame. I'll definitely check out the suggested version of xcompmgr, because i'm getting some similar behaviour on awesome wm, where it's not redrawing the screen, so when things move they leave trails, and such.

  • Help with some strange artifacts - N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC

    hi and firstly thanks for any assistance on my issue
    I bought a new N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC card about a month ago and I have recently noticed some strange artifacts showing up.
    Basically, I get light, almost pastel coloured blue and red 'ghosting' in 3d games (eg TF2, RO2), noticeable where the background is dark.  They are only noticeble when I move in the environment, but they leave short-lived (perhaps 500ms), thin outlines of the edge of the image on the screen.  The image might be the edge of a person graphic or the side of a wall for instance.  These artifacts don't show up in 2d screens and the machine I have is perfectly stable.
    I've got the latest official nvidia driver (280), don't overclock the unit and have a corsair hx 750 ps.  I have read the faq and it suggests upgrading the bios, but considering it's only a few weeks old is there any other thing I should try first?
    cheers!

  • Strange artifacts

    First point - if anyone is looking for really crisp deinterlacing - use the frame controls with 'antialiasing'and 'details'set to about 75% - Yes is will take an age, but plan for it, and the results are very good indeed - in my view better than Bit Vice or anything else.
    One problen however, I am encoding a program, the start of which consists of 3 seconds of black. Using frame controls deinterlacing, with 'progressive' set, and 'antialiasing' and 'details' set to around 50%, the black at the beginning is ruined by strange, static artifacts. Using heavy antialiasing results in a lot of green patterns, the arrangement of which predict the first scene.
    By setting the antialiasing to a lesser amount - around 50%, the problem is less severe, however the black still contains about 10 'digital blocks' of random static noise. This disappears soon after moving material appears on screen.
    Anybody else come accross this?
    Is this a bug which only affects frame controls deinterlacing?
    Is there a work around?
    Apple or somebody, please advise, because this is spoiling an otherwise great result.

    Is the static something like this:
    http://www.uiah.fi/~tolahti/antialias1-details50.tif
    That material is converted from mpeg2 to lossless SheerVideo codec and that point there is no green noise.
    Then compressing to h.264 with compressor2, the noise appears in scenes which have lots of black if there's anti-aliasing used at all.
    My example is from music video that was show in 16mm and these very contrasty scenes were shot also with fast shutter angle (90 degrees) and handheld. So it's quite hard to compress efficiently.
    Video bitrate was restricted to 1800kbitps.
    Anti-alias was set to 1 and Details Level to 50.
    So, it seems that somehow anti-aliasing is changing the picture in RGB-format and green channel flips over from time to time.
    Maybe it happens only when black level is below "broadcast black" (16,16,16), but it really should be allowed to use pure black (0,0,0) in computer and web platforms.
    Is there any official place to send info to Apple about these bugs?

  • Cleaning up artifacts around video frame edges

    Long story short (and one I don't have all the technical details about), when recording DVCPROHD 1080p/24pA to P2 cards using a Panasonic HVX200, a strange flashing line artifact appears every four frames at the very top of the frame. Here's a quick GIF animation of two frames, one with the line, the other without (click to view in a pop-up):
    It's really distracting, and while I can crop this out for either web or DVD delivery, it's not really possible for BR. What I'm trying to do is figure out a good way to clean up or remove this artifact.
    I found Pixelan Clean Crop, and downloaded the demo; it works well. It basically blends a few lines together to effectively mask the flashing line. I'll buy this if necessary, but would prefer to do this with already-available plugins or techniques, if possible.
    I've also successfully masked the line using the CC Simple Wire Removal effect (copied CycoreFX from AE), and by using the frame offset option along with Hold keyframes, I can mask this. However, it kills real time playback almost immediately.
    Does anyone have any efficient or creative ways of eliminating this type of artifact using what's already available in Premiere? Or should I just pony up the cash for the Pixelan plugin and call it good?

    Does the "effect" only cover the pixels of the dark bar or does it actually extend further down the image as seen in the gif example?
    I assume by "effect" you're referring to the artifact? Truthfully, the sample above is a bit distorted; I blew up the portion of the frame where the artifact appears, so it looks much larger than it is in reality. Here's an unprocessed frame right from a clip:
    In the top left corner, running about a third of the way to the right, you'll see a pink line. There is also another pink line on the scan line above that that runs all the way across the frame. This flickers continuously, every fourth frame, which coincides with the 2:3:3:2 pulldown rate. If it was consistent, it wouldn't be that big of an issue (though still not right), but the flickering is so evident that eventually that's all you see!
    maybe you could consider Instant HD to resize the clips marginally.  I think it would do a great job on it.
    Thanks for the recommendation; fortunately, the Pixelan CleanCrop effect fixed this up easily, at a bargain basement price. Rendered reasonably quickly too.
    BTW - I have never seen this issue in my PAL HVXs (202)
    Of course not--you don't have to suffer the ignomies of NTSC video! Since you've got those even integer frame rates that not only divide into each other nicely, but also don't require any of this pulldown nonsense, you're good to go. Always gotta be somethin'...

  • Strange artifacts when playing games

    I see all thse small cubes appearing all the time when gaming.
    Very weird, many artefacts.....
    SOme peoplealso reported same problem, even send out laptops for repair, but when they got it back, same problem.
    Is the problem is graphic card 770m?  I mean they even switched laptops, same model but have same problem

    I tried several drivers of course, each time I see update
    Here is the video of the problem, it is really bad,sometimes it is like this, sometimes it is not there at all
    it happens on most new games, but on little older games, the problem is not there at all. So that is strange.

  • Strange artifacts on screen

    Lately I've been having a weird problem with artifacts showing up on my display. The first time it did it was last week when I left the computer for a minute or so. When I came back, there were two boxes on the screen, each one filled with random fragments of my Dock, desktop picture, and what looked like the Apple Discussions. If I did anything to refresh that area of the screen (drag a box over it, put an icon there, etc.) it would erase that part of the artifact.
    Screenshot: http://homepage.mac.com/daprice/.Public/picture-5.jpg
    Yesterday I downloaded the demo of Star Wars: Empire at War and played it some; it worked great. Today when I tried to play it it ran fine at first but when I started a game the exact same artifacts showed up on the loading screen (I don't have a screenshot of this, but it was definitely the same one that showed up before, and it consistently shows up at the same time when starting a game). Once the game loaded, the framerate was very low and there was a checkerboard pattern of black rectangles at the top of the screen. When I quit the game it was fine.
    I ran a disk check and permissions repair and everything was fine before and after this problem. Hardware Test also reports everything is fine on both the standard and extended test.
    I've restarted several times between the first time it happened and the latest time, so it doesn't seem to be something that's cached in memory, since that would be cleared when the computer restarts.
    Any ideas what could be causing this or how to keep it from happening more?

  • AIR strangeness with playing video

    I've come across something strange with playing local video
    with AIR 1.1 (FlashCS3, Windows XP)
    If I use this code to play a video
    // AS3
    var myVideo:Video = new Video();
    addChild(myVideo);
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    nc.connect(null);
    var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
    myVideo.attachNetStream(ns);
    ns.play("test1.flv");
    If works fine if I compile for Flash 9 but if I compile for
    AIR I get a error:
    "Error #2044: Unhandled AsyncErrorEvent:. text=Error #2095:
    flash.net.NetStream was unable to invoke callback onMetaData.
    error=ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property onMetaData not found on
    flash.net.NetStream and there is no default value."
    Adding a meta data handler like this fixes it:
    // AS3
    var customClient:Object = new Object();
    customClient.onMetaData = metaDataHandler;
    var myVideo:Video = new Video();
    addChild(myVideo);
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    nc.connect(null);
    var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
    ns.client = customClient;
    myVideo.attachNetStream(ns);
    ns.play("cell1.flv");
    function metaDataHandler(infoObject:Object):void {
    trace("metaData");
    }

    Ok, I've found more playing video in AIR strangeness: (Flash
    CS3, Windows XP)
    Run this code and make sure that "flawed.flv" is a file which
    has a .flv ending but isn't actually in flv format
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    nc.connect(null);
    var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
    var vid:Video = new Video(320, 240);
    this.addChild(vid);
    vid.attachNetStream(ns);
    ns.play("flawed.flv");
    ns.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, netstat);
    function netstat(stats:NetStatusEvent)
    trace(stats.info.code);
    var netClient:Object = new Object();
    netClient.onMetaData = function(meta:Object)
    trace(meta.duration);
    ns.client = netClient;
    When compiling for Flash 9 the net status event kicks in and
    you get a "NetStream.Play.FileStructureInvalid"
    message. When compiling for AIR nothing happens at all.
    Ho hum.

  • Strange artifact in Illustrator PDF, only when printing via Adobe PDF printer

    Hello,
    I've run into a strange issue with an artifact in a PDF generated by Illustrator using the Adobe PDF printer. When I "Save As" a PDF, this artifact does not show. Using the same job options, printing via Adobe PDF creates this artifact. The object is behind the content and it's a semi-transparent box that was manipulated using Free Distort. It's behind everything so shouldn't even show up, but the outline is showing up for some reason. In the past I've had similar issues with artifacts and I changed my Adobe Compatibility to the latest version, and it fixed the issue, but that didn't work this time. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks,

    I had to zoom in to see the faint lines you are talking about and they are there. As a test, try printing to the Adobe PDF printer.

  • Strange artifacts in slide show crossfade

    One of my course attendees had a strange problem on her iPad.
    During a crossfade from one state to another (as a tabbed panel)
    the overlayed elements (some texts) appeared with a slight ring
    of strange jitters around it. See for yourself, I took a screenshot:
    Has anyone else seen this error too ?
    It disn't show in the Desktop Viewer.

    We get this artifact on Pan Only Sliders before they have been dragged out from the right (also on iPad 1)

    > seems that problem is caused by CPU ...
    In the case of the Pentax files, it was Macs (OK) WIntel (NOT).
    I also forgot to mention that Thomas Knoll stated a fix would be forthcoming only for ACRv4 and lightroom versions. The symptoms are definitely the same, but you have to wonder if it's the same problem, and for which ACR versions a fix will be forthcoming.
    cheerios :)

  • Strange Artifacts with Brightness/Contrast Filter

    I've applied the brightness/contrast filter to several stills and then on the last 6 frames, I pump the brightness to 100 to create a flash transition. However, on several of these, I'm getting very strange black artifacts after rendering. They appear on the edges of the frame.
    They're not there before rendering, so it's not because that's what the image is supposed to look like at 100 brightness.
    Has anyone ever experienced this or have any ideas how to fix it?
    Thanks!
    Cameron

    Interesting development. I got a different transition from Eureka! plugins that's basically the same as the Buena one except it doesn't crash my system. Rendered it, and lo and behold! Same problem. The same kind of artifacts show up on the edges. The problem with cropping it is that then I just have to re-render and the artifacts come up again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Cameron
