Strange artifacts on screen

Lately I've been having a weird problem with artifacts showing up on my display. The first time it did it was last week when I left the computer for a minute or so. When I came back, there were two boxes on the screen, each one filled with random fragments of my Dock, desktop picture, and what looked like the Apple Discussions. If I did anything to refresh that area of the screen (drag a box over it, put an icon there, etc.) it would erase that part of the artifact.
Screenshot: http://homepage.mac.com/daprice/.Public/picture-5.jpg
Yesterday I downloaded the demo of Star Wars: Empire at War and played it some; it worked great. Today when I tried to play it it ran fine at first but when I started a game the exact same artifacts showed up on the loading screen (I don't have a screenshot of this, but it was definitely the same one that showed up before, and it consistently shows up at the same time when starting a game). Once the game loaded, the framerate was very low and there was a checkerboard pattern of black rectangles at the top of the screen. When I quit the game it was fine.
I ran a disk check and permissions repair and everything was fine before and after this problem. Hardware Test also reports everything is fine on both the standard and extended test.
I've restarted several times between the first time it happened and the latest time, so it doesn't seem to be something that's cached in memory, since that would be cleared when the computer restarts.
Any ideas what could be causing this or how to keep it from happening more?

I'd been having the same issue. The strange artifacts in gtk apps seem to be specific only to certain gtk themes. They have nothing to do with xcompmgr, as jrs said, and they don't seem to have anything to do with openbox, either (I had much the same problem on awesome). Themes that use the Murrine engine or Aurora all seem to work fine, and probably other engines as well, but i'm not sure. I think the whatever engine is used by most of the Elegant (Brit, Cold Blue, etc) series of themes (pixmaps? can't remember) is to blame. I'll definitely check out the suggested version of xcompmgr, because i'm getting some similar behaviour on awesome wm, where it's not redrawing the screen, so when things move they leave trails, and such.

  • Premiere 7.2.1 strange artifacts

I have these strange artifacts in several files, with latest premiere cc version (see images): artifacts appear in premiere as well as in after effects, but they are not visible if same file is opened in bridge (or VLC player). These files are .mov encoded by Resolve. In previous premiere versions they didn't show any artifact.
Could you kindly give me some advice ? Thank you !!
      premiere cc
      bridge

I have had similar problems in the past where artefacts would appear in PP on certain frames, but not in AE or VLC and similar. Never got an explanation to what caused it and then all of a sudden they where gone when I updated PP. And since it didn't show up in my exported files I just chose to ignore it to save my sanity :).
Now the black screen when CUDA is active is probably caused by something else. I assume it affects all videos, not just the ones with artefacts? I have seen a recent thread about problems with CUDA, NVIDIA drivers and the latest PP update, but I can't find it at the moment. Maybe Ann has some insight here...

  • 2012 macbook pro retina display artifacts on screen when using onboard video

2012 Macbook Pro Retina Display artifacts on screen when using onboard video.
About a month ago I've noticed these strange artifacts (blocky pixelated looking) running vertically down the screen. It first started when using Safari. Then it started to happen all the time. I turned off the auto switch video in preferences, which I'm assuming forces the computer to use the separate video card and the artifacts go away.
On top of that issue I also have had the ghosting issue.
    Anyone else have this problem?

artifacts onscreen could mean a faulty gpu. You said by forcing it on inbuilt gpu you do not find this issue highlights that. Do take it in to apple for service and also tell them of your ghosting issue.
There are a few retina owners who have faulty gpus.

  • Help with some strange artifacts - N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC

hi and firstly thanks for any assistance on my issue
I bought a new N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC card about a month ago and I have recently noticed some strange artifacts showing up.
Basically, I get light, almost pastel coloured blue and red 'ghosting' in 3d games (eg TF2, RO2), noticeable where the background is dark.  They are only noticeble when I move in the environment, but they leave short-lived (perhaps 500ms), thin outlines of the edge of the image on the screen.  The image might be the edge of a person graphic or the side of a wall for instance.  These artifacts don't show up in 2d screens and the machine I have is perfectly stable.
I've got the latest official nvidia driver (280), don't overclock the unit and have a corsair hx 750 ps.  I have read the faq and it suggests upgrading the bios, but considering it's only a few weeks old is there any other thing I should try first?
    cheers!

  • Strange Artifacts In Text

I've exported out a Self Contained movie file and the text in it looks fine. But after I compress the video down I'm getting these strange artifacts in the lettering. Check the images below. I messed around with the bitrate quite a bit and I'm still getting it. Help!
    http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g1...Picture2-6.png
    http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g1...Picture3-1.png

Okay, I've created the text in Photoshop CS2 against a plain black background in white using Arial at 48pt. I then delete my background so there is just the text and save it out as a png. Then I bring the png into Final Cut for laying over top of my footage.
My footage is HDV from a Sony HDR FX1 so it's sized at 1440x1080. I have been compressing using Visual Hub, at "go nuts" with a bitrate setting at 6000 and final size at 1280x720. I've also tried exporting using QT Pro with a photojpg codec set to Best.

  • Photoshop CS6 selection, shape, and text is causing colored artifacts on screen

The Photoshop CS6 (13.0.4) selection, text, and shape tool causes colored artifacts on screen. I'm running on a retina Macbook Pro updated to the latest ML release. I have disabled GPU acceleration. I have also tried starting Photoshop with no plugins but this does not help.
I have created a video which shows the phenomena
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG5ayC3WmKA

SOLVED. After two days of intense debugging I've identified the issue as an interaction between the ICC color profile, integrated GPU, and Photoshop. The ICC profile was created with an i1Display Pro using the i1Profiler software. The issue occurs when you create the color profile using the LUT setting. Creating a profile using the matrix setting seems to be ok. In summary, these are the specific conditions that cause the issue (for me):
    1) Using a color profile created with the LUT setting with i1Profiler and i1Display Pro
    2) Using the integrated GPU (discrete GPU is disabled in Photoshop Performance setting)
    3) Running on Photoshop 13.0.4 (13.0+ all have the issue) on a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina display
Creating a new profile with the matrix setting OR enabling the discrete Nvidia GPU will also make the artifacts go away. The integrated GPU using the LUT based color profile does not seem to have any artifacts in any other photography and video editing software that I've tried so Photoshop is playing a role. The nature of the artifacts also change from Photoshop version 13.0 to 13.0.4. For example, in Photoshop 13.0 the Marquee Tool has no issues while 13.0.1+ has artifacts.

  • Strange start up screen

Any ideas why I am getting this strange start up screen. After this everything seems to load and behave as normal.
Started up from AHT disc and the options screen was also split into quarters.
Thanks in advance for any resolutions.

The image didn't come in.  Use this tip as a guideline:
How to post an image in Apple Support Communities
When AHT fails to fix a problem, it is typically hardware related.
    The 2010 Mac Mini http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-core-2-duo-2.4-mid -2010-specs.html
Supported HDMI and mini-Displayport with audio.  If the display you are connecting to is VGA, that's analog, and might not have the proper adapter to see whats coming out of the digital signal of the Mac Mini's ports.   HDMI is more designed for TVs, and Mini-Displayport is more designed for computer screens.
TVs usually are designated 1080p, 740p, 740i, 480p, and 480i, and the setting by the TV remote controls as much of the display as the computer.    So verify if using a TV, that the display is matched up with what the computer thinks it is.   DisplayConfigX and SwitchResX can help in resolution issues with TVs on Macs and give you more pixel level control than some TVs support.  On VGA adapters 4:3 ratios are typically the only ones supported.  DVI is far better supported.

  • Pixel Artifacts on screen

I am having an issue with what I think are Pixel Artifacts on screen when I roll the mouse around on the screen. Its also evident when I click on certain things on screen as well. This all started after installing Leopard earlier this week for the second time. I first put Leopard on my computer back in August 2008 and didn't have this problem then. I read something about resetting the PRAM. Should I do that to fix this issue? It's annoying because if I am dragging the mouse across the screen its almost like the pointer "arrow" will grab on to words or whatever and it will be a trail of the same word across the screen or sometimes its just a small box or square.

You can search around the forum for "pixel artefact". There can be many different reasons. Here's [a thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8631126&#8631126] with some suggestions, including how to zap the PRAM. For the user in that post, the diagnosis was that the logic board needed to be replaced.
    Hope it helps.

  • GTX 660Ti Pe 2GD5/OC driver fail and recover, artifacts on screen

    Hello everyone,
Some days ago my pc started suddenly to show artifacts on screen, and a fail and recover message of the video driver showed in the taskbar.
This happened since I bought FC3 Blood Dragon (the game is very unstable, crashes),obviously I don't know if this is related.
This happened also during web navigation and the windows pc score test.
I have updated the nvidia driver to latest version, but it's still the same.
    I have W8 64bit and MSI Z77 MPower, the VGA isn't oc.

    [UPDATE]
    Guys please help me,
this morning at the boot , the horizontal white lines appeared again (with the two stick of memory that yesterday I believed were good).
These lines, i don't know how, caused windows 8 crashing at startup, then I heared a bip form the inside of the pc, windows failed to recovery and then appeared a message that was necessary to restore from a previous checkpoint ! But the mouse was not working so I rebooted from the onboard button in the motherboard.
Now the mouse works, the system seems ok, but really i don't understand this situation.
Is possible that the bad ram sticks are more than one ?
that BIP: that may have been a bip to signify that the Graphics card had CRASHED.... (maybe your Graphics card may be the main Fault here and its got bad VRAM)
your RAM: totally possible that more then one is BAD which is why i said "test each pair or better yet test each Stick individually if possible!" that way you can find out if one or more are bad...

The blue screen message that I get a lot of time at windows closure is "PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA"
page fault is a HDD error and may be as a resort of the crash and some bad DATA has been wrote to your HDD or SSD! could also be a RAM Error Sending bad DATA to your hard drive thats not clean....

  • Strange rectangular artifacts on screen

I just upgraded from OS 10.4.10 to 10.5.6. I'm getting strange black rectangular artifacts that go away when the screen redraws. They look like invisible strike areas for Flash buttons. These black rectangles are very distracting and annoying. Has anyone else encountered this? I have screen captures I can send to anyone if my description is not clear.
    Thank you.

    Hi LG Smith;
Check in System Preference > Universal Access and see if you have VoiceOver turned on. This can do it. Sometime an Upgrade can change system preference for you.

  • Is my i7 MBP GPU malfunctioning?  Strange pattern on screen?

Happens in the morning after the computer has been sleeping all night.
    Diamond shape artifacting I guess?

After I leave it on for a bit and let it warm up reset the power then it boots like this.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/428893/Mbp/Movie%20Dec%2002%2C%209%2013%2043%20AM.mov
After it gets to the desktop things are really crashy and don't load properly, so a 3rd boot is needed.
After 3 reboots the problem goes away, so what ever it is I assume needs to warm up before it works right.
Its obviously hardware related, I suspect my logic board / GPU need to be replaced?
All this happens as soon as I move to Mexico where there are no Mac service places around!
Anyone know if mac will ship replacement parts for user serviceable components?

Unfortunately, this does have the look of a hardware problem, probably having to do with a graphics chip. Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? You might get an error code which would indicate where the problem is.
There is a way to contact Apple in Mexico--you might want to do that and see what options they can offer you:

    Good luck!

  • Strange artifacts

First point - if anyone is looking for really crisp deinterlacing - use the frame controls with 'antialiasing'and 'details'set to about 75% - Yes is will take an age, but plan for it, and the results are very good indeed - in my view better than Bit Vice or anything else.
One problen however, I am encoding a program, the start of which consists of 3 seconds of black. Using frame controls deinterlacing, with 'progressive' set, and 'antialiasing' and 'details' set to around 50%, the black at the beginning is ruined by strange, static artifacts. Using heavy antialiasing results in a lot of green patterns, the arrangement of which predict the first scene.
By setting the antialiasing to a lesser amount - around 50%, the problem is less severe, however the black still contains about 10 'digital blocks' of random static noise. This disappears soon after moving material appears on screen.
    Anybody else come accross this?
Is this a bug which only affects frame controls deinterlacing?
    Is there a work around?
Apple or somebody, please advise, because this is spoiling an otherwise great result.

Is the static something like this:
    http://www.uiah.fi/~tolahti/antialias1-details50.tif
That material is converted from mpeg2 to lossless SheerVideo codec and that point there is no green noise.
Then compressing to h.264 with compressor2, the noise appears in scenes which have lots of black if there's anti-aliasing used at all.
My example is from music video that was show in 16mm and these very contrasty scenes were shot also with fast shutter angle (90 degrees) and handheld. So it's quite hard to compress efficiently.
Video bitrate was restricted to 1800kbitps.
Anti-alias was set to 1 and Details Level to 50.
So, it seems that somehow anti-aliasing is changing the picture in RGB-format and green channel flips over from time to time.
Maybe it happens only when black level is below "broadcast black" (16,16,16), but it really should be allowed to use pure black (0,0,0) in computer and web platforms.
Is there any official place to send info to Apple about these bugs?

  • Sparkling artifacts over screen

Have had my Macbook pro for a week now, so happy with it other than one strange phenomenon, every so often the screen starts to erratically show small flashes of white (the best way of describing this is like an old TV with bad static response). The strange thing is this only happens sometimes, rest of the time it is perfectly fine. Has anyone else had this problem? can is be fixed with an update?
    Message was edited by: steinzeug

I get the same sparkling artifacts, but only in dual monitor view. In two screen mode the Macbook pro screen is ok, but my samsung syncmaster monitor has the artifacts.
I don't get them in boot camp with XP pro running, so I suspect (and hope) its a software fix issue for the hybrid sli card drivers under osx, though I should add I haven't had the same problem in single screen mode in osx as you appear to have.
