Strange Audio CD name problem in Finder
This is a very odd problem that is a little annoying. When I put in burned CDs (not professionally mastered) the name of the CD in the finder and shows the last playlist I burned myself, instead of just "Audio CD", as if referring to a cash file it can't seem to get rid of. I've tried restarting the finder, but that doesn't fix it, and I've cleared Caches with Cocktail, but it still happens. I'll try erasing the .DSstore file next, but anyone else have a definite solution?
I peeked at my "CD info.cidb" file with HexEdit, a binary editor. The file contains binary information which is invisible in TextEdit, possibly related to indexing/lookup functioning. I think that altering it without knowing more would be risky, and I'm not sure it would work anyway - Finder and iTunes can display different names for the same user-burned CD, indicating that there may be another name cache somewhere.
I tried to do a little reading, and found another potential issue. Although I had previously thought that audio CDs never carry title and track name information, and therefore names that you give to home-burned CDs could not be transmitted to other computers, I've just learned about something called "CD-Text." From [this|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-Text] Wikpedia article:
CD-Text is an extension of the Red Book Compact Disc specifications standard for audio CDs. It allows for storage of additional information (e.g. album name, song name, and artist) on a standards-compliant audio CD. The information is stored either in the lead-in area of the CD, where there is roughly five kilobytes of space available, or in the Subchannels R to W on the disc, which can store about 31 megabytes. These areas are not used by strict Red Book CDs.
iTunes 8 supports burning with CD Text. It is by default an unchecked option in the burning preferences.
Toast on Mac OS X has support for CD-Text.
So maybe if your home burned CDs had CD-Text enabled, then they could transmit your title and track names to another computer. It might be a good idea to test this. You might also ask further at the iTunes forum, as Jeffrey had suggested earlier.

File Not Found bug with long audio file names?
Hello -
Crazy problem. I'll probably post way too much information, but I want to make sure I cover everything. Help!
We run Logic Studio/Logic 8 on multiple 10.4.10/11 computers - G5 Power PC, new intel iMac, intel mini, G4 laptops. We are working on an audio post job using very messy OMFs that were prepared in Final Cut. We had problems opening them in Logic, so we opened the OMFs in Soundtrack Pro, exported to AAFs, and opened those in Logic.
The sessions look fine in Logic now (all files relinked), and the session is consolidated - ie, all files are local/in the project folder's Audio Files folder. I see this in the Audio Bin and can confirm in the finder.
Here's the problem. With the sessions closed:
(A) I renamed the project folder by adding an asterix to the front of the folder name, and changed the color label of the folder in the finder in order to mark it as the original folder.
(B) I made a copy of the whole folder (session files & audio files) in order to have something to work from and not mess up the original. When I opened up the session in the new folder, it immediately said audio file not found, do you want to search, locate, or skip. It couldn't find the file in a search, and obviously when you skip, then skip, then skip all, it opens the session with the data (regions are there but grayed) - so all the audio files are orphaned.
So when I try to locate the file, here's what happens. . . The audio file names are really horrendously long (must be some artifact of working in Final Cut). We're talking: "1087-001A SERG AIRPORT WAITING * 1-1channel_00044D02AA9- 363A-4CC5-A86B-0741023DB062.aif" - one bazillion characters.
So the audio file locate dialog box truncates the name of the file that's missing by using the first 20 characters or so, and then a "#" character, and then some random string of 3-6 characters that is not at all related to the file name. So who knows which of the 4-30 SERG AIRPORT files is supposed to go there!
Obviously if this were a 2 minute session file of 10 files or something, we could figure it out and relink everything, but we're talking about a feature-length session with a bazillion files.
(C) Okay, so I tried to open the original session, in the folder that I had renamed by prefacing the original name with an * and changing the color of the folder. But I started to get the file not found errors. OH GEEZ. So I didn't save. I re-renamed the folder by taking out the * and changing the color label back. Then I tried to open the session again, but I still kept getting the file not found problem.
I have to stress that I didn't move any of the audio files, or change ANYTHING in the session.
So I thought - is all of this because I tried to open a new instance of the session, in a new instance of the folder? Is it because I renamed the folders? Normally you can rename folders, even session names, no problems, and Logic corrects the paths to the audio files!
(D) So, crap. I reopened the original AAF file in logic and saved it in a new place. I closed the file, reopened it, closed, reopened, just to make sure everything was working! I checked the location of the files in the audio bin, and everything was great.
(E) So now I copied the folders to an external hard drive to be able to work on another computer. But when I tried to open the sessions on a new computer. . . You guessed it, nada.
So. . . the questions are:
(1) Those original sessions that now will not work - is there anything I can do to recover their functionality? We had work in there that I would prefer not to lose. . .
(2) Is this a known bug having to do with the length of the Audio File names?
(3) How do we get over this? My only idea so far is we could select all in a working logic session and say "Audio Tracks names to regions" or something and will that change the actual file names on teh computer? Then hopefully things would work on mulitple systems. . .
Okay. HELP! Thanks!
PollyOK I got it.
It is necessary to use prefix "file:///" before file name.
Thanx everyway. -

------=_NextPart_000_0157_01C8E5D5.30A1E450--Yeah, it does make me appreciate Wordpress. I would have
stuck with it, but
when I found out that you have to pay to edit your CSS (on
their hosted
plan), I switched back to Blogger!
I'll keep my eye on that beta ("draft") version of Blogger. I
have to be
cautious with my client's account, but maybe I'll try it for
my own blogs.
Thanks again...!

Friends,
I'm having some audio-midi setup problems on my G4/1.25/10.5.1 machine. I'm thinking that a routine OS upgrade might help. However, this machine is not connected to the internet. Are there any alternate methods for upgrading system software? Thanks in advance!OK, what you should do is download the updates on another machine and burn them to a disc. Start at this link http://support.apple.com/downloads/#leopard for downloads and find, among other things, the 10.5.8 combo updater that works on PPC machines, plus security, QuickTime and other updates. Going from 10.5.1 to 10.5.8, there will probably be a bunch of things that you should install. Being off the internet with the machine, you can't have Software Update sort it out, so something might get missed, unfortunately.
My suggestion is this: if it looks like you might need a download, get it onto that disc. -
After I've changed the file name/format in Finder iPhoto can't load/relink to the referenced file anymore. For some reasons I don't like to reimport the file.
Hmm the advice has been not to use referenced libraries - you ignored and did it anyway and you find the advise not helpful
Furthermore the advice is that if you choose to use a referenced library that you assure that the path never changes - you also choose to ignore that advice and do it anyway - and you blame the peopson trying to help you
once again - you have one choice - change the file names back and put the files back in the exact same place - and again you are totally ignoring the advice and instead name calling and attacking the person giving you advice
Maybe life would be easier if you followed advice rather than ignoring it and then complaining that things no longer work
change the name back and you will be fine until the next problem you hit that is caused by choosing a referenced library
Have a nice day

Help please so I can send out my email newsletter.

VoodooHi David - yes, you and I both!! It has totally wrecked my data-base of Help links.
The more this issue is given air space maybe the better chance to rectify it. Surely it can't be too difficult to create a method whereby old URLs are transferred to the new system? -
[solved] Strange Audio Issue
I am experiencing a strange audio issue with my Intel-HDA ICH7:
# lspci -v
00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 30a5
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at d2400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access>
when I installed Arch linux the first time a mounth ago on this computer, I had a sound problem that was solved in a very strange way.
Everything worked fine until a week or so (I believe from Alsa 1.0.12). Now sometimes sound works and sometimes it doesn't. For example sometime I boot the computer and have no sound, then I reboot it without doing anything, and then sound works.
I have tried messing with the modprobe.conf:
# /etc/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.11 ---
#alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
#alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
#options snd-hda-intel model=F1734
options snd-hda-intel model=z71v
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1
but it was useless. If I put back the modules in rc.conf everything is worse: sound doesn't work at all.
A diff between lsmod in a "working boot" and a "without sound boot" showed that the same modules where in kernel memory.
A diff between dmesg showed this difference:
< hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
was present in the not working boot. This line is absent in a working boot dmesg.
The only way to make the sound card working everytime is to remove the snd* modules load from the boot sequence and load the modules "by hand" after the login.
Any ideas?
PS : If something is unclear due to my poor English please tell my and I'll try to explain it better.phrakture wrote:snd-hda-intel is screwed up - on my thinkpad I had to go into the bios and enable the modem for sound to work. Oddly enough, the modem was off by default.
Also, mine has no PCM listed, I need to use "front" as my PCM level... not to mention the UI is way off with 'tpb' (if you have a thinkpad)
Yes it's not an Arch Linux related problem: I had problems with Debian (Etch and Sid based distros like ubuntu) too (but there I had no modprobe issue on the init sequence. Maybe is a problem of shared IRQs, but I have to study the existing documentation as I am a newbie). The difference is that Arch is simple enought for me to try something like modprobing "by hand" in the init sequence. PCM seems to work, however the volume is very low and I have found no way to make the mic work. Under Mepis I was able to make it work only if I plugged it in windows xp and then reboot into Linux. But I can't try it with Arch as I have erased the windows partition...
I will try the new kernel, study the documentation and then report. Hoping this will be usefull to others too. -
Strange audio in infinity blade 2?
Hi guys
Does anybody has a problem with audio in infinity blade 2?
In detail, the game is playing only music, and not others effects, as walk steps, sword hit ecc ecc.
Sometimes it's working, but just exit end re-enter with double tap on home button, and it doesn't work again.
Any ideas??
MarcoI've already deleted and re-installed but it didn't worked.
Is strange because seems the problem occurs only with this app. -

HP 530 laptop audio loaded reads Could naot find MEDIA device foe driver....Help
Hi,
Is there sound in Headphones?
You can refer the link below and check if you have missed any troubleshooting steps..
No Sound from the Speakers (Windows 7)
HP Notebook PCs - Resolving No Sound or Audio Problems in Windows 7
You can also try doing a System Restore to an earlier date when the sound was working..If that fixes the problem then check if there are any windows updates listed..sometimes it may happen due to driver conflicts after updates. In that case you have to hide the conflicting update.
Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

'Source play' and 'audio-video sync' problems with PE8 on fast WIN7 64 bit computer
I am transferring Hi8 videos, about 2 hours long, to my WIN7 64 bit computer with PE8. [Dell Mobile Precision M4400 Computer Workstation (Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 500GB/4GB); NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M, 512MB] I seem to have several problems:
First, after importing the file (.avi), I get a message about ‘dropped frames.’
Secondly, when I try to play the video in the source monitor, the audio plays but the video doesn’t; it only shows the first frame [this is after waiting until the video is ?recognized? ] I can use the shift-arrow key and see that the video is there.
Thirdly, I can play the .avi file in other players, e.g., avidemux or PE pro CS5 on another computer. There, I see that the audio and video are not in sync; the audio can be up to 300 ms ahead of the video (as determined using avidemux).
Questions:
1. Why doesn’t the source monitor play the video? Is this a problem with PE8 (latest update as of 3 March 2011) on aWIN7 64 bit computer (intel duo core. 3 GHz).
2. Is the audio-video sync problem the result of the ‘dropped frames?’ How can PE8 correct this? Avoid this? Or, is it coincidence?"I think you're telling me you're using a backwards compatible Digital8 camcorder to capture your video as DV-AVIs. Is that right?" YES
"Are you using Premiere Elements to do this capturing?" YES, AS ABOVE PE8
"Go to the File menu and select Properties. It should show a standard DV codec being used for your video and audio."
WMP v12 is dumb. Under properties, media, it says 'video.' However, avidemux gave me the information state above: video -- Codec 4CC: dvsd, frame rate: 29.971 fps; audio -- codec: PCM, channels: Stereo, frequency: 48 kHz.
So, back to the Questions:
Avoid this? Or, is it coincidence? -

How to display the current name when renaming Finder item
Is there any way to get Automator to display the current name of a Finder item when renaming an item?
I want my users to be able to copy and rename a folder template but I want to display the folder template's current name as a default in the renaming dialogue window, so the user follows the correct naming format.Since you've already hacked into it, if you've got developer tools installed, it is most likely in the nib file that is in the English project folder in the Resources.
I don't know what further implications that will have on the app in general, though.
If you are a little adept at applescript, you may want to create your own Applescript Studio app to do this instead of Automator. Also, take a look at Platypus to make a wrapper around you applescript instead of AS Studio.

Display the computer name in a Finder window?
Is there a way to show the comouter name in a FInder window? I sometimes open windows to other computers on my home network and copy files. It can be confusing as to which computer a particular window is connected to.
That is a partial solution but the disk names are not unique. Several of the computers have the main disk called "Macintosh HD" so it is still hard to tell one from another.
If Finder is in multi-column display mode, the computer is highlighted in the sidebar but if in list view, that goes away.
