Strange authorization behaviour, purchased music confusing who purchased it

I have this bizzare issue that has happened once and now twice. I bought Zinn's Peoples history of the United States audio book on my powermac G4 using my account. Many moons later I decide to play it again today. Except it tells me I am not authorized, and it says the owner is my dad's account. We share an office but not computers. So when i play it the authorize dialog box pops up and instead of saying [email protected] needs to authorize this song, it says [email protected] "foo" being my account who purchased the song, "bar" being his account. How did itunes get confused who the owner is? And how can I fix this?

You are trying to find a loophole to circumvent a basic rule that prohibits the transfer of purchased content from one Apple ID to another.
Content tied to an Apple ID are bound to that Apple ID forever. You can not merge or trade accounts. Well, not (officially) anyway...

Your question seems to have nothing to do with itunes U.
What do you mean "sharing purchased music from my account to another ipod"?
Do you mean you are trying to sync to your ipod? If, so just sync it.
If you mean that you are trying to give music to others, then this is not legal.

Got a new hard drive, is there any way to get my purchased music and not purchased music on my macbook?

The iPod doesn't actually support that. But good news: With the latest version of iTunes, you can re-download all your purchased music for free. Just open the iTunes store and click on Purchased on the right hand side.
As for the rest, a quick Google search shows there is no Apple supported solution.

There is absolutely NO way to drag and drop newly purchased music from the Purchased list on the phone into my iTunes library? I'm finding it hard to believe that something so simple cannot be done!

I like to make MP3 CD's when I have people over, or when my friends have people over so I can just pop them into the CD player and let them play all night without having to worry about changing the CD or anything. Well, Apple's music is in AAC format, so I have to convert the songs to MP3 files using the converter in iTunes. So I'll convert them to MP3's and just delete the AAC file so I don't have doubles. The problem is, the next time I plug the phone into my laptop to transfer new purchases, iTunes thinks that the songs I converted aren't there anymore because the phone has them as AAC files, and iTunes has them as MP3 files, so it doubles the music again...EVERY time!! It's very frustrating! So this is why instead of clicking Transfer Purchases, I would like to be able to just drag and drop the songs I want from the Purchased list on the phone into my iTunes library. I hope I explained this right...lol. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like I'm able to do that. I'm hoping maybe somebody here can help me out and give me some pointers on what to do about this. That stinks! I can actually do that at my house...I just plug my iPhone right into the wire that's plugged into my receiver in my living room...but some of my friends aren't "technology savvy"...lol...so they just have DVD players and I'll put the CD in there because it will read an MP3 disc. What's funny, is I have the phone set to "Manually Manage Music", and when I plugged it into the laptop just now, the one song I downloaded last night on the phone, transferred over to the iTunesl library. That NEVER happens. And it only transferred the one song...it didn't double the other songs like it ususally does. I swear, iTunes does what it wants, when it wants sometimes...lol. 3 albums of purchased music show on purchased list, but files are only on iphone. How can I get them back onto my computer?

I have at least 3 albums of music that appear in the "purchased" column on itunes, but the files have gone missing. I have the files on my iphone, and can listen to them on it, but when I try to play them on my Mac I get the message : The song “XXXX” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" but when I try to find the songs in my itunes library the files are not there. I have had to de- and reauthorize my computer to get the apple tv (1) to play old content, and wonder if in doing that, I have somehow wiped out old purchased song files. Is there a way to transfer these songs back onto my desktop Mac? The "transfer purchases from iphone" function doesn't do it, seemingly because the songs were all puchased via the desktop.

If I open up the iTunes app and select "purchased > music > not on this iphone" it tells me "All of your available music has been downloaded to this device." However, my purchases are not yet downloaded to the iphone and not available to download. If I go to "purchased > music > all > recent purchases" it will show me the purchases that were most recent the last time I synced my phone, but not the purchases since then.
Any thoughts on how I can remedy this and make all of my purchased music available on my phone without requiring syncing?

Fortunately, AirPlay does not cost anything as it is a streaming protocol used by Apple. Currently, the AirPort Express and Apple TV are AirPlay-ready. A number of other companies, like JBL, iHome, Denon and Klipsch are also rumored to be working on AirPlay versions of their products.
Your other option would be to get an AirPort Express and connect it to your Onkyo analog or optical digital audio input and stream from iTunes that way. I currently do this with my 10+ year old Harmon Kardon HT receiver.

Can't move music out of Purchased Playlist on Itouch 3rd generation

Ok, so when I purchase on itunes THROUGH my itouch, it keeps that purchased music in that purchased folder ONLY. I try to drag it out from the folder on my computer and place it in another playlist(on my itouch) and it WILL show it on the computer that it is there, but once i eject and look at the desired playlist for the song it is NOT there. Is there anyway to fix that?? It really fraustrates me.

You need to File -> Transfer purchases.
This will copy the files from the IPod touch to iTunes.
Then you can drag it to the desired playlist in iTunes and sync the iPod touch.

Purchases only automatically go into the purchases playlist (green) on the PC where you actually bought it.
On a new PC you move them to, you have to put them in yourself.
On Macs there is an Apple script that can find purchased tracks. You can do it on Windows using smart playlists.
Match any
Kind contains Purchased
Kind contains Protected
Live updating is checked
Then you can drag the results of that smart playlist (purple) over into the Purchases (green) playlist.

Copy Non-purchased Music to the PC

My iTouch has purchased music and non-purchased music on it. When I sync to it, I can only copy the purchased music to my PC. I want to copy the non-purchased music to the PC before I update the iTouch S/W and it will not allow me. Is there some S/W that will allow me to copy this non-purchased music or is there something else that will not allow me to do this that I am not aware of?

Okay, I see that there are multiple s/w packages. Is there a "best" option amongst this bunch? If it is free, is it worth the free or is it best to just buy something and be done with any issues that free brings with it? I am not too experienced with this stuff, but I do want it to be easy to move back and forth between these S/W platforms.

Imported iTunes will not let me play or authorize my purchased music!

I upgraded the hard drive in my trusty MacBook Pro, and then put my old HD in a usb enclosure and used Migration Assistant to transfer over my old stuff. The music I had from my CDs transferred over without issue.
The problem is, the music I had purchased from the iTunes store. When I go to play these songs, I get the authorization window with the option to enter my Apple ID to authorize this computer. Well, I had already authorized this computer right after I transferred these songs to it.
I originally had used my old AOL account for purchases etc. I tried that username and password. No luck, it tells me I have to update my account. (I have, before I had swapped my hard drive, updated my account when I bought an iPhone 4 and MobilMe, but we will get to that in a minute).
So, I clicked 'update,' figuring I will simply enter my new information and this will all be over with, but no! I get a screen that says "Your Request Cannot be Completed. Make sure your computer's date is set correctly and that it accepts cookies from the iTunes Music Store. For detailed solutions to resolve this issue, click More Info."
I clicked 'More Info,' which is of no help, as it takes me to a iTunes for Windows XP Windows 2000 support page with no solution that works. I set my Safari preferences to accept all cookies (something I don't want long term, but figured would do for this and then switch once I got MY music back.) Also, my date and time are set correctly. I scoured the help for a solution, but cannot find one.
So, I repeated this process, clicked on a purchased song, and tried entering my updated ID and PW. I get a message window saying "This Computer is Already Authorized. Including this one, you have authorized 3 computers out of your available 5." And, the purchased music still will not play!
So, I next de-authorized my computer and reauthorized it again. Which had no effect, as what I described above still occurs the same way and I cannot play some of my favorite songs which I did the right thing and paid for and now can only look at their titles wistfully.
So, I am hoping there is someone out there who can help me get my groove back with a solution to this problem. Help please!

this was a know problem with older ipods, I had to go to the apple store and they traded me up to a new nano
I had the exact same problem, interesting, sometimes when you completely re-load the device, it wouold work for a couple of days, and then not play purchased songs.
Go to an apple store and let them know about this, it is their problem to fix.
I would guess, if you connected a nano, this would not happen

Tigon's already got you covered here. But I'll chime in with some English localisation advice.
There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

I have music in iTunes that was purchased with an account that no longer exists. I'm transferring music to a new computer so the new iTunes is asking me to sign in to the old account to authorize the old music. Is there a work-around for this?

Just to clarify: I purchased some of my older music in iTunes with an account that got deleted. I cannot recover or use this old account. I transferred music from my old iTunes to a new computer and that new iTunes on the new computer is asking me to sign into the old account to authorize the music. So, is there another way to transfer this music to my new iTunes? I'm using a USB thumb drive to transfer the music. Also, music that was purchased with my current account tranfers just fine.
