Strange battery behavior

i haven't used my nano in 2 months. i am going on a trip and i wanna bring the nano... so i plug it in.
i get a large battery icon in the middle of the screen. it is an empty battery with a lightning bolt on the left side.
like the one at the bottom of this page...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60970
i got the nano for christmas of this past year... 2005. the battery can't be out of re-charges already.
Windows recognizes the nano... is shows up in 'my computer'... but itunes does not see it. it has been connected for 2 hours now... and the screen shows a do not disconnect icon.. and then up in the right corner there is a small battery icon that keeps going from empty to full over and over. there is also a small 'refresh' icon in the upper left corner... an up arrow and down arrow spinning around to make a circle.
can someone tell me what is going on?
thanks
jer

Run it until it goes totally dead in which case the machine turns off. This does not mean to go into sleep or hibernate. Thats not dead!!
You either have to configure power manger to not do anything in case of weak battery or boot into something else where there is no power management EG CD tool or something.
The fully charge it and see what its says for its level. Once charged you can go into the TVT Powermanager and look at the state of the battery and also confirm/test it further.

  • Sudden shutdown- then strange battery behavior?

    About a week ago I was using my 2009 Macbook before I went to take an exam. When I left it had very little battery left (it has given me a warning) but I just shut the top and left, figuring it would go into Safe-Sleep. When I came back, I found that the fan was running very loudly and that the screen was dark. When I plugged in my MagSafe charger, it didn't recognize that it had been plugged in. In an attempt to prevent the fan from burning out, I took the battery out for awhile and then put it back in again... and the fan began to run again. I figured I would let it run for a little while and eventually the fan turned off and a while after that the computer turned on.
    Ever since, I've been getting strange readings about my battery from the built-in indicator and my iStat Pro widget. When it's not plugged in, the built-in reader doesn't tell me how much battery is left, but instead lags and then tells me that it is plugged in and "Not Charging"
    Right now iStat Pro is telling me that my battery is 29% charged when not plugged in but when I plug it in it tells me that I have 10 hours of charging remaining until I reach 100%.
    I'll have this laptop for a year next week, it seems a little early for battery problems of this scale. I swear I haven't dropped it! Anyone have any ideas before I bring it in?

    My iBook seems to take a long time (15 minutes) to calculate the battery charge.
    A note on the lower right-hand of this page:
    <http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html>
    says 300 cycles is the battery design life.

  • GS60 Pro - Erratic battery behavior

    My GS60 Ghost Pro has a strange battery behavior since I got it earlier this week.
    As an example, I did a powercfg -batteryreport and got something like this:
    16:23:34   Active    AC    98 %    53,291 mWh
    16:32:36   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    16:34:44   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:05:58   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:06:04   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:09:11   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:09:17   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:18:27   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:18:33   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    As you can see, it switches between AC and Battery by itself while being plugged in. It happens randomly. Other times charge goes to -1 mWh:
    20:52:40   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
    21:19:44   Active    Battery    -   -1 mWh
    21:19:47   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
    21:34:49   Active    Battery    -   -1 mWh
    21:34:52   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
    I have also managed to get a "Battery not detected" message while the laptop was not even plugged. Powercfg reported:
     Installed batteries
    Information about each currently installed battery
    No batteries are currently installed
    Again, the laptop was running from the battery when getting this message.
    I have tried to do an EC reset and to run the MSI battery calibration tool, but this has not fixed the issue.
    Is there anything else I can try? Or is the battery defective and I should contact MSI already?

    No, it`s really simple, hold your finger on an icon for a few seconds before they start to wriggle, and hit Delete, or "X" i`m not sure.

  • Capturing DVCAM in FCP 6.0.2 and encountering strange capture behavior

    I have FCP 6.0.2 and OSX 10.5.2 and QT 7.3.1. I have been capturing several DVCAM cassettes using my Sony DSR-20 deck. Although I have done this countless times before in earlier versions of FCP, I am encountering some strange repetitive behavior. I am capturing 30 minute clips one at a time. When I use batch capture it will cue the tape up properly to the in point...and then start capturing until it gets to about 10-12 minutes in, and then capture unexpectedly stops, no dialogue box, the tape rewinds and starts capturing again from the original in point. On this second capture, the tape sails past the 10 minute mark and keeps going to the end of the 30 minute clip. It then stops, gives me the dialogue box that it has successfully captured. And it has.
    But every DVCAM tape I captured today exhibited the same behavior. Capture would be successful until about about 10 minutes in, then FCP aborts (no dropped frame message, no dialogue box) rewinds the tape back to the in point, tries again, and this time succeeds with the second pass capturing the entire clip. Note at the 10 minute mark there is no scene change or no camera start/stop.
    Have other users experienced this issue? And if so, is there a workaround or a possible patch forthcoming from FCP?
    Many thanks,
    John

    Yes, each tape has an in and out point defined. In my 6 years of editing with Final Cut and DVCAM tapes I've never encountered this issue before in the capturing process until now. I will have to see in future weeks with other captures whether this is an on-going issue or not, but at least I can capture for now.

  • Bug in my code or strange memory behavior ?

    Hi, Guys !
    It's been a while since I post something in this forum - trying to use your help when it's really needed.
    So, here we go ...
    (we use Oracle 8.1.7 on Unix box and SQL * Plus 8.1.6)
    While back I wrote "core" PL/SQL package that resides in let's say DB1 database. It has RECORD_EXISTS_FNC function designed to dynamically check If the record exists in certain table/view. Assumptions are that you pass in :
    Table/View name, Column name, and unique numeric value (because by DBA rules all of our Tables have SEQUENCE as a Primary Key. And I plan soon to put in overloaded function to accept unique character value)
    Also every Table has SYS_TIME_STAMP and SYS_UPDATE_SEQuence columns that populated by Trigger before Insert/Update representing Last Update time_stamp
    and how many times record was updated within same second.
    (in case more than one User updates same record in same time - that was written before Oracle had more granular date/time). So function has SYS_TIME_STAMP and SYS_UPDATE_SEQUENCE parameters (optional) accordingly.
    And It looks something like :
    FUNCTION RECORD_EXISTS_FNC
    (iBV_NAME IN USER_VIEWS.VIEW_NAME%TYPE,
    iPK_FIELD IN USER_TAB_COLUMNS.COLUMN_NAME%TYPE,
    iPK_VALUE IN NUMBER,
    iSYS_TIME_STAMP IN DATE DEFAULT NULL,
    iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IN NUMBER DEFAULT NULL) RETURN BOOLEAN IS
    TYPE REF_CUR IS REF CURSOR;
    CR REF_CUR;
    i PLS_INTEGER DEFAULT 0;
    vRESULT BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE;
    vQUERY USER_SOURCE.TEXT%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    vQUERY := 'SELECT 1 FROM ' || iBV_NAME || ' WHERE ' || iPK_FIELD || ' = ' || iPK_VALUE;
    IF iSYS_TIME_STAMP IS NOT NULL AND iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IS NOT NULL THEN
    vQUERY := vQUERY || ' AND SYS_TIME_STAMP = TO_DATE (''' || iSYS_TIME_STAMP || ''')
    AND SYS_UPDATE_SEQ = ' || iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ;
    END IF;
    IF iBV_NAME IS NOT NULL AND
    iPK_FIELD IS NOT NULL AND
    iPK_VALUE IS NOT NULL THEN
    OPEN CR FOR vQUERY;
    FETCH CR INTO i;
    vRESULT := CR%FOUND;
    CLOSE CR;
    END IF;
    RETURN vRESULT;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    IF CR%ISOPEN THEN
    CLOSE CR;
    END IF;
    INSERT_ERROR_LOG_PRC ('CORE_PKG', 'ORACLE', SQLCODE, SQLERRM, 'RECORD_EXISTS_FNC');
    RETURN vRESULT;
    END RECORD_EXISTS_FNC;
    So the problem is when I call this function from let's say
    database DB2 (via db remote link and synonym) and I know exactly that record does exists (because I am selecting those SYS fields before pass them in) - I get the correct result TRUE. The other programmer (Patrick) calls this function within same DB2 database, within same UserID/password (obviously different session), running exactly the same testing code and gets result FALSE (record doesn't exist, but it does !) He tried to Logoff/Login again several times within several days and try to run it and still was getting FALSE !
    I tried to Logoff/Login again and I was getting mostly TRUE and sometimes FALSE too !!!
    I thought may be It has something to do with REF CURSOR that I use to build SQL on the fly, so I changed to NDS
    using EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement - nothing changed.
    vQUERY := 'SELECT COUNT (1) FROM ' || iBV_NAME || ' WHERE ' || iPK_FIELD || ' = ' || iPK_VALUE;
    IF iSYS_TIME_STAMP IS NOT NULL AND iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IS NOT NULL THEN
    vQUERY := vQUERY || ' AND SYS_TIME_STAMP = TO_DATE (''' || iSYS_TIME_STAMP || ''') AND SYS_UPDATE_SEQ = ' || iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ;
    END IF;
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE vQUERY INTO i;
    vRESULT := NOT (i = 0);
    RETURN vRESULT;
    Interesting note : when Patrick doesn't pass SYS parameters (Time_stamp, Update_sequence), or passes NULLs - function always finds the record ! (Statement 2 below)
    May be it has to do with the way TO_DATE () function gets parsed in that dynamic SQL - I don't know ...
    Here's the test code :
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON;
    DECLARE
    SYS_TIME DATE;
    SYS_SEQ NUMBER;
    bEXISTS BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT SYS_TIME_STAMP, SYS_UPDATE_SEQ INTO SYS_TIME, SYS_SEQ FROM LOCATION_BV WHERE PK = 1;
    bEXISTS := CORE_PKG.RECORD_EXISTS_FNC ('LOCATION_BV','PK',1, SYS_TIME, SYS_SEQ); -- STATEMENT 1
    --bEXISTS := CORE_PKG.RECORD_EXISTS_FNC ('LOCATION_BV','PK',1, NULL, NULL);        -- STATEMENT 2
    IF bEXISTS THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('TRUE');
    ELSE
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('FALSE');
    END IF;
    END;
    I asked our DBA, he has no clue about this strange inconsistent results.
    I debugged line by line, extracted that generated SQL and ran it in same account - works fine !
    Does anyone knows or have clues or can help what's going on ???
    I don't know If this is bug in my code or strange memory behavior ?
    (Please let me know If anything unclear)
    Thanx a lot for your help and time !

  • Strange Permissions Behavior with Public/Private Drop Box

    Strange Permissions Behavior with Non-Course Drop Box
    In an effort to promote iTunes U on campus this semester (and to get people working with audio and video more) we're having a contest in which people can submit personal or group audio/video projects.
    This being an iTunes promo, we intend for students to submit their contributions via a drop box.
    To that end, I began experimenting with drop boxes in iTunes U, which I haven't done much of previously. I've created a course called "iTunes U Drop Box Test" under "Campus Events". Within that, I have two tabs: "Featured Submissions" and "Dropbox". My goal with this drop box was to allow faculty, students and college folks the ability to use the drop box ("college" being a role I've defined for those who don't fit into the faculty/student roles).
    When I first started experimenting, access to the "iTunes U Drop Box Test" course looked like this:
    --- Credentials (System) ---
    Edit: Administrator@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    Download: Authenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    Download: Unauthenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    Download: All@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    --- Credentials ----
    Download: College@urn:mace:lafayette.edu
    Download: Instructor@urn:mace:lafayette.edu
    Download: Instructor@urn:mace:lafayette.edu:classes:${IDENTIFIER}
    Download: Student@urn:mace:lafayette.edu
    Download: Student@urn:mace:lafayette.edu:classes:${IDENTIFIER}
    For the "Featured" Submissions tab, I gave the non-system credentials the "download" right, and for the "Dropbox" tab I gave the non-system credentials the "dropbox" right.
    My understanding of this setup is that everyone should have had the ability to view the course and the contents of the "Featured Submissions" tab and that those in the College/Instructor/Student roles would be able to upload files via the "Dropbox" tab ... but not see the contents of said tab after the files were uploaded (aside from any files they uploaded themselves).
    This is not the behavior we saw however. While the College/Instructor/Student roles could upload files to the dropbox, everyone (including the unauthenticated public) was able to see all of the contents of the dropbox.
    The only way I could get this to work as advertised was to change all of the system credentials save the "Administrator" to "No Access":
    --- Credentials (System) ---
    Edit: Administrator@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    No Access: Authenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    No Access: Unauthenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    No Access: All@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:lafayette.edu
    Once I did this, everything worked as advertised: College/Instructor/Student roles could upload tracks, and the "Dropbox" tab would only display tracks they uploaded.
    So my question is ... is this the correct behavior for the drop box? It looks like when the system credentials are in play, they're simply overriding whatever the normal "view" rule is for the drop box, which doesn't seem right.

    Your current configuration where things work as you wanted does seem correct to me. You are not using any System Credentials to accomplish the functionality and that's fine.
    Here's some more info to clarify how / why this is working for you and why you had to set "No Access" for the System Credentials:
    The System Credential "Authenticated@..." is going to get assigned to any user that goes through your transfer script. Even if you transfer script assigns no credentials to a user, upon entering iTunes U they will have at least 1 - the "Authenticated@..." credential. Therefore, unless you block access using "No Access", any user that passes through your transfer script is going to be able to access the area in question.
    When you change values for "Unauthenticated@..." or "All@..." you are defining what someone that DOES NOT pass through your transfer script can do. You want both of those to be "No Access" at the top level of your site if you do not want unauthenticated visitors.
    The distinction between "Unauthenticated" and "All" is that "All" applies to all users whether they pass through the transfer script or not.
    Here's another way to remember things:
    User passes through your transfer script, iTunes U automatically assigns:
    Authenticated@....
    All@....
    User does not pass through your transfer script and instead access your iTunes U site through derivable URL*, they get assigned:
    Unauthenticated@....
    All@....
    *The derivable URL for a site is: http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/site-domain-name

  • Strange Battery and Startup goings on!

    Hi
    Ive got an old G4 667mhz laptop running 10.3.9. Recently Ive been experiencing some strange battery behaviour. I seem to get low battery warnings even though the % shows its above 50%. The most noticeable glitch is that I'm often unable to boot up the laptop without it being plugged into the mains - unless the battery has been recently charged.
    I'm guessing (hoping) its a battery problem - although I guess buying a new battery will probably be the same cost as the whole machine
    many thanks for your help
    and a happy new year to you all!

    The battery level indicator can get out of whack sometimes I have heard, this I was told happens more if you don't run the battery charge down all the way and just run to half and recharge, run to half and recharge.
    Try running the battery all the way down and charging it up a few times. Sometimes it helps things.
    That said its possible that your battery is just getting into its latter days and is nearing the end of its service life. (If this becomes the case remember to properly dispose of the battery when its done please)
    Some after-market batteries will also give you longer running times then the Apple ones now.
    Also this is the G4 PowerMac forum you will probably get more PowerBook related help in the Power Book Forum

  • Strange XSLT Behavior: xsl:template match

    Hello I found the following strange XSLT behavior when using xsl:template. I only want to read the content of the element /Source/Surname/Details. Therefore I match this path using xsl:template match.
    What is strange that in the target message also the value of the Element LastName is written at the end. Please see example below. This is just a short example to point out the problem. I have a bigger message structure where I have to match a similar path. How can I avoid the the value of the FullDetails is just written at the end (not even beeing in an element)? I would have expected that the path is only matched once and the instructions then executed without <LastName> beeing even touched.I used XML Spy for this test.
    Here is an example:

  • Strange ZWSREG behavior

    We are in the middle of a rollout of about 300 new machines. (used sysprep in the image) The first 100 are doing something strange. They boot up get renamed and join the windows domain with their new name, but register with ZEN as the randomly generated Microsoft name. (usually someting like N-398477634379d979) I deleted the workstation object, unreged and rereged the computer, but it always reregisters with the randomly generated name. What gives? I found a TID that said this was fixed by an update on the latest desktop agent, but that I could work around it by deleting the incorrectly named object and waiting for the machine to reboot, However it still registers with the wrong name. Any ideas? Thanks.

    But these are new computers. They should not have image safe data yet. I tried it, but got the same result.

  • T23 Battery not charging, strange battery/charger behavior

    I have an old T23. Two months ago it suddenly stopped charging the battery. It seems as an IC problem. Therefore, I decided to buy an external battery charger (ThinkPad Multiple Battery Charger II, P/N: 22P9040), and a new battery, since the old one could drive the T23 for less than, say, 15 minutes.
    After receiving the charger and a new battery (from two different suppliers in USA), I found a strange problem: the old battery is charging normally, but operates for 15 minutes, or less, and the new one is not charging - the orange light flashes permanently.
    After that, I decided to buy another new battery, this time from Hong Kong, but the whole story repeated.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Z560 strange battery/charging system behavior

    I just encountered something strange and was wondering if others are seeing it.  I am on vacation in Hawaii and the power company did some unscheduled maintenance on the pole yesterday in front of our unit which took out power abruptly for a time.  My Z560 was plugged into the wall and initially appeared unaffected.  I found out otherwise when I attempted to use the Z560 this morning and found it in what seemed to be hibernation.  Hitting the keyboard had no impact, hitting the power button once caused the login screen to popup, but it immediately went back asleep and was unresponsive after the first such try.  I finally wound up pulling the power cord, which resulted in a cold boot when I plugged it back in and hit the power button.  Thankfully the system recovered fine from the abnormal disconnect of power.
    The power object on the toolbar appeared to indicate the battery had completely discharged despite being plugged into the wall, so it is as if at some point the charging system had been knocked offline.  Perhaps I could have caught this earlier had I noticed the power object state, but I missed it.  At this point the battery now shows as completely charged and appears functional, so I am puzzled how the charging system got disabled.
    Dave

    From you Hitting it!  (Just kidding)
    When the power went out, most likely the ac adapter
    was not reset if you left it plugged in.
    Unplug, replug, it is reset, and charging begins.
    Meanwhile, it ran off battery until it drained.

  • Odd battery behavior and strange recalibration results

    I have a 14" iBook G4, just over a year and a half old, and have been having problems lately with my battery. I think I am at the point where I just need to buy a new one, but I wanted to know if anyone had any extra advice or had the same problems as me. Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1584
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1584
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 16405
    Cycle Count: 229
    I know my cycle count is high, which has something to do with it, but lately my full charge capacity has been dropping dramatically. I did a textbook Apple battery recalibration last night following all instructions, and my full charge capacity DROPPED from 1840 to the above stated 1584. Is this normal? My cycle count is high, but it isn't as high as what would be reflected in my charge capacity, correct? Can anyone help me out or have any ideas? Is it just time to bite the bullet and buy a new battery?

    That's possible, I suppose but more likely:
    Overcharing lithium batteries is really bad. So bad that well designed devices turn off charging when the capacity is reached. At this point, I believe one of two things can happen. The device might be powered by the charger, however with the battery no longer receiving any charge, or (easier) the device can run on the battery after the charger has been disabled. The plug icon in the battery icon indicates charger not charging but connected. I think the iPhone is smart enough to run off the charger while not charging, however batteries can lose charge over time even when they are not being used.
    The computer takes longer to charge the battery so it spends less time connected but not being charged than when you use the wall plug. I've seen this on a Palm PDA as well, although a little more dramatic. I believe the Palm was not smart enough to run off the charger and instead ran of the battery. Depending on when you disconnected, it could be truly fully charged or a few % low.

  • Early 2011 MBP 17 Random Shutdown and Battery Behavior

    Hi all, new to the forums here.
    I recently purchased a refurbished early 2011 MBP 17' 2.2 Ghz i7 with 8gb and 10.7.5. Out of the box, machine looked great, but I noticed that the power cable was different than the one I had for my early 2011 MBP 15' I have for work. This raised an immediate redflag (buying from a refurb site outside of apple is always a cause for concern IMO) so I abstained from using that charger until I knew a little more. I plugged in the machine and booted it up and everything worked great. The batter was close to 100%, so after charging for approximately 20 min, I unplugged it, and the laptop immediately died. I powered it back on, and the harddrive began to spin for a few seconds, then the same result, total loss of power. Started up again, and I was able to boot into OS X and play around for a bit for a period of time before again, shut down.
    For the next few days, same story. I was able to at one point, drain the battery completely and do a full cycle charge. The first time I did this, no change in behavior. Again, a few days later, I was able to drain the battery and perform a full cycle charge, but this time, a major change in behvior. Since the second full cycle charge, I have had absolutely no power problems. I haven't really "pushed" my MBP to see if fully utilizing the CPU/RAM/GPU will produce the similar results I had early, but it appears that everything is working great.
    Here a few interesting notes to my situation.
    When I was first operating the system (when plugged in, there were no shutdowns, only while on the battery) I pulled up my system report, and noticed that my battery cycle was very low (~5). This seemed odd, because I had opted for a used battery instead of a new one.
    Prior to reinstalling Mountain Lion, my volume up key would trigger a few strange events. The screen for briefly get quite bright, then all open applications + the doc and widgets would restart (similar to killing explorer.exe in the windows task manager).
    Since performing the fresh install, I have had abslutely no issue with my MBP and I love it, its a beautiful machine. However, as I purchased refurb, I'm hesitant to proceed (I will exceed my return period in ~2 weeks) without knowing my machine is in prime working condition. I have read issues about early 2011 models having issues with batteries and GPUs, but my symptoms were dissimilar to those described by others with those particular issues.
    Any thoughts?
    I have a genius appointment tomorrow evening for a general diagnostics check, but if others have experienced these issues, I would appreciate some input.

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

    You may need to use OPTION D to start it.
    Install iStat pro and open Activity Monitor.  Set Activity Monitor to show 'All Processes' and '%CPU' to display values from high to low.  Post images of the two such as these:
    Ciao.

  • Nokia N8 and strange battery low notifications

    I have strange experience with my Nokia N8 notifications about low battery. Other Nokia phones sending lots of "beep's" when battery level is low - my N8 sends only one (maybe 2, but this last one is before phone turning off). First one with asking, that i will turn on power safe mode and 2nd (whatever i choose power saveing mode or not) is the last one "Battey empty. Please charge" (or something similar.
    I think this is very strange and **bleep** off behavior. Any1 had like me? Is any fix for this issue?
    Thanks from advance for usefull tips and sorry, because my English is very weak.

    I agreed with that, but what if i don't know, that my phone have battery low, because i left it on table or other place in house and i don't hear first warning? Phone will discharge battery for good and turn off itself. I have few situations, when i don't hear this first (and only) warning and i was suprised at the morning, when i saw my phone is turned off or in the middle of the day, when someone tells me, that he can't call in to me (because phone died). Other situation when i must use my phone when i have 10% of battery power, after switching to power safe mode (like quick check when i have bus on Internet, quick call to somebody or what is WORSE: when i write long text in QuickOffice and phone shows me middle finger...
    Other Nokia's having LiON batteries too and they have normal notifications. Some thing is really messed up here and it must be fixed. I feel like HTC HD2 user (i was HD2 user), because this phone do exactly the same "trick"...
