Strange behavior attempting to Restrore selective files

I've been using Time Machine on my Mac Mini now since October of 2009. I generally do monthly backups (manually) and they are all successful backups (no errors to report). The Time Machine backup drive is attached to the computer via USB (directly connected). When I backup the system, Time Machine does it's magic and automatically mounts the sparsebundle for this machine, backup proceeds, and then Time Machine unmounts the sparsebundle. All behavior seems normal.
Now, this is where it starts to get strange. Today, for the first time, I "Entered Time Machine" from the Time Machine menu bar to restore some files and noticed the following anomalous behavior:
1) The Time Machine app launches, yet the sparsebundle is not mounted (which is what it should do based on experience with other machines running Time Machine)
2) After Time Machine launches, there is no backup history (except for "Today"), essentially making Time Machine useless even though I know there are many valid backups in that file dating back to October, 2009 (I have confirmed the data is there by mounting the sparsebundle manually and looking through the backup files)
So, with that said, I know for certain this is not normal behavior for Time Machine. I have other Machines backed up to this same disk via the network (AFP mounts). And when I enter Time Machine on these machines the sparsebundle is mounted pre Time Machine launch and I see my backup history clearly.
Any insights would be helpful. Very frustrating to say the least. And just as an FYI, I also tried the following:
a) Verified the backups, and they passed without incident
b) I manually mounted the sparsebundle file using DiskImageMounter app before launching Time Machine, yet it still does not see the backup.
I'm stumped. Did some Google searches but no answers have emerged.
Stuart

Where did the sparse bundle come from? Normally they're only used for network backups, not directly-connected external drives.
That's why you have to mount the sparse bundle manually; Time Machine is looking for a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the drive, not a sparse bundle.
This happens when you do backups to an external HD over a network, then move the HD and connect it locally.
But, if you only back up monthly, Time Machine is not the best app for you. It's designed, and optimized, to do hourly backups when possible. You'd likely be much better off with CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the like. See Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.

  • Strange behavior when resizing with 'Selection Tool'

    Hello,
    I have a really strange issue when using selection tool to resize object. I have several rectangles stacked and grouped inside a layer. When I select one of them (either in Layer panel or with Group selection tool) and switch to 'Selection Tool (V)' to resize it, this tool behaves diferently at diferent zoom levels. Only at 200% zoom it behaves as it shoul.. With 100-150% zoom result is diferent - like there's a invisible box around selected object and I'm resizing it.. I've tried to explain the issue in attached image.. Anyone knows why is this happening?
    Thanks.

    - make new document, size 16383x16383px
    - create rectangle any width, hight say 200px (or anything less then 320px for 5% zoom)
    - select rectangle and show bounding box
    - try resizing hight by stretching bounding box
    - this is how same selection looks at diferent zoom levels
    - same zoom level as befor, hight 100px..

  • Strange behavior with csv flat file integration

    Hi,
    i've a real strange behavior with csv flat file integration.
    I've defined the file inbound with | as separator
    Here is the sender payload result, extra columns appears !
    <row>
      <VAL1>D</VAL1>
      <VAL2 />
      <VAL3>01</VAL3>

      <VAL7 />

      <col>2</col>
      <col />
      <col />
      <col>2</col>
      <col />
      </row>
    When i changed the separator to ; in my file and in the file inbound it gives the following.
    Everything is ok.
    <row>
      <VAL1>D</VAL1>
      <VAL2>01</VAL2>
      <VAL3 />
      <VAL4>003160000</VAL4>

      </row>
    Why using a different separator would change the payload ?
    It will be a good thing for me if I could use the pipe separator.
    Thanks

    Can you give the steps you're using to get this error? I'm not seeing any problem here.
    1) Create a new audio project (44.1 KHz).
    2) Arm the record head in track 1 by pressing the "R" button in that track. Verify audio levels.
    3) Record by pressing the record button in the audio controls.
    4) Stop recording by pressing the stop button.
    5) Play back the resulting audio. Sounds fine.
    6) Select File > Export.
    7) Change the file format to WAVE file. Change the bit depth to 16 bit, change the sample rate to 44.1 KHz.
    8) Type the name SAVETEST.wav and click on the Export button.
    9) Play back the resulting WAV file in QuickTime Player, Apple Loops Utility, etc. and it seems just fine.
    What am I missing that you're doing?

  • Strange behavior of WindowsIntune / Win8.1 : Repetitively launch C:\Program Files\Microsoft\OnlineManagement\Updates\Bin\omupdclt.exe

    Hi,
    After moving from Win8 to Win8.1 (using WindowsStore update),
    I observed sometimes that some command prompt Windows (ugly black MSDOS Windows) opens / closes Repetitively in my desktop.
    At a moment where the computer was really busy, I was abble to see the title of this black window :
    It was : C:\Program Files\Microsoft\OnlineManagement\Updates\Bin\omupdclt.exe
    Can someone tell me how to prevent this strange behavior ?
    Thanks in advance.
    AC Soft.

    I have also openned a case at WindowsIntune support, and up to now, they replyed me this :
    We have been able to reproduce this issue ourselves. We are currently working with our engineers to identify if there is a way to prevent these command prompts from launching.
    So, while waiting, I Tried your solution.
    On the Win8.1 computer that had the problem, i found an AccoundID value, with { }, and all letters in Uppercase, as described in your solution. So, the problem for me is not that AccountID is not populated...
    When I looked at another Win8.1 computer that had not the problem, i found an AccountID value
    without { }, and with all letters
    in lowercase.
    So I looked at a Win7 Virtual machine that was enroled into intune too, and that obviously didn't had the problem, and I found there an AccountID value without { }, and with all letters in lowercase, same as on the working computer.
    So on the computer that had the problem, I removed the { }, put all letters in lowercase, then run
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft\OnlineManagement\Updates\Bin\omupdclt.exe /agentupdatenow
    I rebooted the computer, and now, I wait to see if the problem is solved...
    I will tell you what happened in some days...
    AC Soft.
    That process will not fix this issue.  We have a fix coming in an upcoming service release.

    in Forms Central, attempting to do file attachment, but "select File" option is grayed lout/unavailable - how do I make it available?

    Is it necessary that all the files are on the local hard disks? In the case of the laptop I could understand this if the laptop is also used outside the network, but the desktops should stay in place, no?
    It could be as easy as to make a shortcut on all the computers to the samba-share and tell the inlaws that they have to use the samba-share to store their (shared) files.
    You are correct about this but I doubt they would remember to use this all the time so I want to sync the folders just in case.
    Assuming the laptop is always going to be in the same IP address when it connects to the network (which is unlikely in default configurations), you could create a script that checks for the existence of the machine on the network then perform a sync.  I had a script written in Python somewhere that would check to make sure the server side was up and run unison, but it could be modified to check for the laptop and copy files.  Let me know if that's something you're interested in and I can post it for you.
    This sounds like what I'm looking for. Also I wander If it could be done by NetBIOS  name instead of ip address? This way It wouldn't matter.
    The script sounds like what I'm looking for though
    Thanks for the help!

    I think you must have version cue enabled. In the lower left hand
    corner of the open menu it says- Use OS Dialog, press that to get
    mac open dialog.
    If you don't need version cue, it can be turned off in the application's
    perferences or i think in the mac control panel if you have a creative suite
    installed.

  • Linking to local files - strange behavior

    Hi all,
    when I insert a link to a local file (using Insert > Hyperlink and then selecting "File" in the dropdown list), then Robohelp changes the absolute path to a relative path when saving the topic. Naturally this link does not work in a CHM.
    I can resolve the issue in the HTML view by changing the path back to an absolute reference such as:
    file://C:/Test/Hello_World.htm
    Such a link works in the CHM. However, I cannot get it to work in the TOC. I have checked the HHC and can verify that the path still is absolute there, yet the page does not open when clicked.
    Any ideas?
    Robert

    Hi Robert
    This is one purpose or reason you would use Baggage Files.
    Add the file you are linking to as a Baggage File and link to the baggage file.
    This may also have issues inside a CHM output though. But before we delve into the possible issues, give it a try and see if it works for you. It may work straight away. If so, that's great. But if you start seeing issues, post back for more help.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Strange behavior in deleting images - works on second but not first try

    In Library mode, Grid view, right after importing, after I select several images with an "x" to be deleted, when I bring up the "Delete Rejected Photos" dialog, I find this strange behavior. I get the message that there are not photos marked for deletion. I then invoke the dialog again, and my photos that were marked show up, with the choices of deleting from disk or removing from the catalog. What am I likely doing wrong? I'm on WinXP Pro with LR 2.2. Thanks!
    Dilip

    Dilip,
    I too have seen this behaviour in all versions of LR. Even when deleting a single image in the develop module. If LR is writting the preview you can't delete the file until the preview is rendered. I think it's more to do with the OS not allowing the deletion of a file being accessed than a LR bug as such.

  • Strange behavior of HtmlPanelGrid.getChildren().clear();

    I have some problem, described in previous messages.
    Investigating it, I found some strange behavior, which I cannot understand.
    I builded a small application to isolate this strangeness.
    There are two pages, first and second. There are hyperlinks from first page to second. Secon page serves as an indicator, that navigation was successfull. It is not so all the time.
    There is a bean, which constructs a hyperlink at runtime and which contains my problem, as I think.
    The config file is (header and footer skipped):
    <navigation-rule>
    <from-view-id>/welcomeJSF.jsp</from-view-id>
    <navigation-case>
    <from-outcome>select</from-outcome>
    <to-view-id>/secondPage.jsp</to-view-id>
    </navigation-case>
    </navigation-rule>
    <managed-bean>
    <managed-bean-name>bean</managed-bean-name>
    <managed-bean-class>Buggy.Bean</managed-bean-class>
    <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope>
    </managed-bean>
    One can see, that navigation is always controlled with the one constant string literal -- select. The bean is called just "bean" and it exists during a session.
    First page is (header and footer skipped):
    <f:view>
    <h:form>
    <h:commandLink id="link1" action="select" value="link1 (hardcoded)"/>
    <h:panelGrid id="panel" binding="#{bean.panel}" columns="20" border="1" cellspacing="0">
    <h:commandLink id="link2" action="select" value="link2 (hardcoded)"/>
    </h:panelGrid>
    </h:form>
    </f:view>
    One can see, that there are two hardcoded hyperlinks, one is inside the panelGrid, second is outside. Also it is seen, that the panel is binded with bean property as a whole.
    The second page is just displaying a text to be sure the navigation occured.
    Now the bean (header and footer skipped):
    private HtmlPanelGrid panel;
    public HtmlPanelGrid getPanel() {
    return panel;
    public void setPanel(HtmlPanelGrid panel) {
    this.panel = panel;
    Application application = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getApplication();
    MethodExpression expr = application.getExpressionFactory().createMethodExpression(FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getELContext(), "select", String.class, new Class[0]);
    HtmlCommandLink link = (HtmlCommandLink) application.createComponent(HtmlCommandLink.COMPONENT_TYPE);
    link.setId("link3");
    link.setValue("link3 (softcoded)");
    link.setActionExpression(expr);
    panel.getChildren().clear();
    panel.getChildren().add(link);
    One can see, that a third (softcoded) hyperlink is added to the panel dynamically, with preliminary clearing panel content.
    * STRANGENESSES *
    1) despite the fact, that the panel is cleared prior to adding softcoded hyperlink, I CAN see it on the page (all 3 hyperlinks are seen)
    2) in the debugger I can see, that while executing code, the children list is empty; this can mean, that the order of execution of the Jave code and JSP code is reversed; despite this fact, I see the hardcoded link BEFORE the softcoded
    3) the link2 (hardcoded) is not work, i.e. it is not leads the second page to be displayed
    4) if I comment the line panel.getChildren().clear(); then all 3 hyperlinks start to work

    But when I put links creation code in bean's constructor, it was lost.
    It seems to me, that the system creates panel independently and only after that calls setter of my bean. Ergo, the data from the panel field, initialized in constructor is overwrited.
    Where I should place programmatic filling of panel element?

  • Strange behavior of Aliases

    Ever since switching to OS 10.5, I have had a strange situation with aliases and the file to which they point. After selecting an alias, and pressing Command+R, the window will display the actual source file in its actual location, as always. Then, if I use the back-left arrow in the left side of the title bar (or Command+[ ) to return to the folder containing the alias, that folder will appear to contain the original file in addition to the alias. In reality, that file is really in its original location and it only appears to be in both places. If I move the phantom file to the desktop, the real file will disappear from its real location. Has anyone else experienced this strange behavior?

    red_menace wrote:
    I also noticed that the contextual menu item to show the original works differently than the main menu item.
    On my system, the contextual menu behaves the same way. Using the back arrow to return to the original folder shows both the file and its alias. Leaving that folder and returning removes the phantom file, as you observed.

  • Strange behavior after suspend.

    Hi,
    For some time I have a strange behavior of my system after I awake my computer(after suspend). This problem don't disappear after update.
    Ok, so if I suspend my computer, and awake him I can't run any program. Even if i was open some application, this application crashes. I have to restart my machine.
    Somebody had similar problem or know how help?
    I'm using Arch Linux x64, kernel 3.8, openbox. Suspend by "systemctl suspend".

    OK, maybe good idea is paste here my output journal:

  • Strange Behavior From SwingWorker Class

    I've been using the SwingWorker class to perform binary file parsing of a file that's supposed to be formatted a particular way and updating the user interface with the status as the file parses. Whenever I detect an anomolous event in the file, I save the even to an array and once execution is complete, in the done() method, I save the array to a user selected log file on disk.
    If the user doesn't select an output log file, I just want the program to process the input file and show the usual on-screen information it displays. However, when I try to catch an IO exception upon attempting to create the log file in the runInBackground() method, not only doesn't it catch the exception but it transfers execution immediately to the done() method.
    I can't include the entire file, but here are some snippets...
    Log file definition:
    private File logFile = null;...
    Log file exception block in runInBackground(). It transfers execution to the done() method immediately after the try portion (?)
    //Open the log file
                try {
                    logFileOut = new BufferedWriter (new FileWriter (logFile.getPath()));
                    logFileOut.write ("Log file for bit shifted HCR frame scan \n");
                    logFileOut.write ("Scan conducted on file: " + loadFile.getPath() + "\n");
                catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
                    //***User likely didn't enter a file name
                    jLabel5.setText("Scan Underway, no log file...");
                catch (IOException f) {
                    jLabel5.setText("Unknown File Error");
                }The code doesn't catch an exception on this block in the done() method:
    try {
                            logFileOut.write ("Frame # " + frameText + " shifted " + shiftText + " bits at byte " + byteText + "\n");
                        } catch (IOException ex) {
                            finalStatusText = "Scan completed - no log file specified!";
                        catch (NullPointerException e) {
                            finalStatusText = "Scan completed - no log file specified!";
                        } And finally, it catches a nullPointerException upon attempting to close the file:
    try {
                        logFileOut.close();
                    } catch (IOException ex) {
                        //*** User failed to provide a log file
                        finalStatusText = "Scan completed - no log file specified";
                catch (NullPointerException e) {
                    finalStatusText = "Scan completed - no log file specified";
                }Does anyone know why this is happening and why it's not catching the exceptions I expect it to? I'm starting to think this is a bug in the swingWorker class because I encountered a similar very strange situation when trying to use a linked list, which transferred execution to the done() method upon adding the first element. I had to use an array in that situation.

    For anyone who looked at this topic, I think I found the answer to my question:
    When I tried to create a file with a blank file name, it threw a null pointer exception, which I wasn't looking for (as you can see from my sample code). I guess the swingWorker class catches any uncaught exceptions from overriding it's functions and immediately executes the done() method, hence the jump into the done() method.
    Moral of the story is that I used an if-statement to detect if the file was still NULL and if it was, then I skipped the file write completely. Apparently if-statements execute much quicker and are preferred to catching exceptions.
