Strange behavior of merged clips on import

After much troubleshooting I've noticed more strange behavior in the reimport of merged clips from XML...
I have merged clips made out of film transfer and the audio from an aiff file. I can export and xml of a merged clip... all of about 30 seconds and when I reimport the clip from xml it is like 47 minutes long and will not reconnect the audio part of the merged clip. That is actually happening to ALL of my merged clips in a current film project.

Yes, all phones are 111, all faxes are 222 and all mobiles are 333

  • Merged Clips in Pr don't import into AE (or export from Pr via Dynamic Link)

    anyone else encounter this??
Exporting ANY sequence from Premiere that contains Merged Clips to Ae via Dynamic Link results in NO clips showing up in the AE Comp.
On the flip side, I can Import a Premiere Pro Sequence in Ae, but the only clips that do show up are NON-merged clips.
Here's what a simple test sequence looks like on the Pr side of things:
And here's how it shows up in Ae when choosing Import-->Adobe Premier Pro Project  (and selecting single sequence):
vs. the exact same sequence sent from Pr to Ae via Dynamic Link:

Hmm..I wonder if it's Multi-Cam merged, vs just single video track and audio track merged, that is the issue.  I'll have to do some more tests.

  • Additional audio channels being imported with XML from FCP. Merged Clips. Out of Sync

    Problem
When I import an XML Interchange Format V5 file from FCP7 and then import into Premiere Pro CC, my merged clips now have 4 audio channels. 2 from the original file and 2 from the merged audio.
    Versions
    FCP 7
    Premiere Pro CC 7.2
    Workflow
    * Create merged clips in FCP
         * ProRes Video clip with camera audio
         * Stereo audio clip
         * Sync in Timeline
         * Delete unneeded audio tracks, reducing track on video clip to 1 mono track, centered
         * Drag to browser
    * Export XML Interchange V5
    * Open Premiere
    * Import XML Interchange File
    * Clips are imported, HOWEVER
         * Clips now have 4 tracks of audio
         * Tracks 1-2 are audio from the original Video clip
         * Tracks 3-4 are audio from the synced second source audio file
         * Additionally, tracks 1-2 are now OUT OF SYNC
I cannot find a way around this. Clips now all have out of sync indicators on them. Merged audio is insync, and original audio is out of sync.
I do not want to have to resync all of my audio, everything is tagged and organized into bins.
Anybody know why this happens and a workaround?

Ha ha, an excellently wry comparison.
I'm using photo-jpeg because it was reccomended to me as a way to achieve greater image quality when exporting within the confines of youtube.

  • CS6.0.2 Merged clip bugs

Having struggled with my typical editing style using dual sync sound i've been able to replicate a few bugs, by listing them here my hope is to get other editors using "merged clips" with dual sync sound can find a solution around them.  This has come up a few times in the forums but hasn't specifically addressed the bugs.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4503977
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4676617#4676617
These bugs are with using Merged clips.
    1. using the match frame command from a clip in a sequence and then using a replace edit from source monitor on another clip, matches frame on video, but sync is off on the audio.  Using match frame on the newly replaced clip does reconnect to the correct timecode with the audio in sync, however the audio and video in and out points do not line up with the matched frame clip.  So you can't just use the overwrite edit with the matched framed merged clip.  Once you've matched frame with the incorrectly referenced audio, you can not use the replace edit command again, it gets grayed out.
    2. This same bug occurs when find an merged clip in the browser, creating in and out points and using the replace clip command from bin. The audio is out of sync and replace edit command becomes grayed out.
    3. Once the mismatch in the audio sync has occurred from the replace with match frame, the merged clip in the bin when loaded into the source monitor shows the inpoint and out point of the video, and a separate in and out point of the audio, which is not aligned properly like it was when it was originally created. Only when the in and out point of the audio and video are manually changed does the merged clip become a unified clip again. (one in and out point referencing both audio and video)
if anyone else can replicate this bugs it would be appreciated.
My clips have been manually synced in premiere, would be interested to see if pluraleyes' behavior is any different, but I don't have access to pluraleyes for Premiere if anyone can test.

Unfortunately this is not a spanned clip problem with Adobe or Panasonic. This issue does come up from time to time.
Be sure when you pull the card from your camcorder, you LOCK IT immediately. Then it becomes impossible to change anything on the card purposely or inadvertantly (and as you are aware, changing anything - structure, file names, ANYTHING - on the card will blow the whole operation, so locking it is perfect). Also, sometimes Mac users have problems when they fail to lock their cards, because Mac OS immediately starts writing files to the card if it's not locked.
When you're using the Media Browser in PPro, be certain that you are viewing the clips in AVCHD mode (there's a dropdown option for this right there in the Media Browser). If you're importing individual clips from a single continuous recording, you're NOT in AVCHD mode, and this will always cause the problem you are describing.
I don't mean to lay this out as "you're doing it wrong" but unfortunately this is all very well documented at this point, and whenever there is a problem with spanned clips, it is 100% of the time due to a user that renamed something, moved files, or otherwise didn't follow the complete rules of AVCHD management. I don't normally use a term like 100% (tend to prefer 99.9%) but I say 100% because it is absolute in this case.

  • Strange behavior - compositions being cut down

I'm trying to create After Effects compositions to be used in my Premiere Pro projects, but strange behavior is making this completely impossible. Here's how it goes:
    1. Start a new AE project, start a new composition.
    2. Add clips/effects/etc., save.
    3. Start a NEW AE project, start a NEW composition.
    4. Add clips/effects/etc., save.
    5. Composition 1 has now been cut down to the time composition 2 and when trying to open composition 1 in AE, it redirects me to composition 2.
I don't get what's going on... it's like they're being linked, but they're two entirely different projects/compositions. This is crazy and it's wasting a lot of my time. Any help would be appreciated.

Let me slap my self on the forehead and say "D'oh"  It's your workflow. You're using dynamic link in Premiere Pro. The proper workflow is to have all of the comps in the same AE project. In Premiere Pro you go to File>Dynamic Link>New After Effects Project. You create your comp size in Premiere Pro, not in AE, then AE opens up and you create your comp. When you want to create a new dynamic link you follow the same procedure.
Dynamic link can only look at one instance of AE at a time so it's looking at the last project for the comp info. It can't find comp 1 in project 1 because it's only looking at project 3. That explains the same comp showing up in all three locations. Fix the workflow and you'll fix the problem. In fact, I think that if you open up project 3 and import project 1 and project 2, then same project 3, then open up Premiere Pro your problem will be fixed.

  • Is there a way of getting Merged Clips into After Effects?

    Hi,
When I import my premiere pro project into After effects (NOT VIA DYNAMIC LINK as we don't have prod. prem.) After Effects only sees the clips which aren't merged. Any fixes sensible work arounds for this, as currently I'm havbing to import the project ( a feature film...!) into Final Cut Pro then using Automatic Duck export out an AAF then using Automtaic Duck import that into After Effects.  I haven't thought about how to get it back into premiere yet...will probably finish it off in FCP.

I'm not sure if you have the capability, but did you try copying from your premiere sequence and then pasting into your after fx timeline? i was working with a MUCH shorter video with a mix of merged clips (interview footage) and video clips (b-roll). the video clips imported, but the merged clips did not. i put the timeline cursor to the right point in the after fx timeline, copied the premiere clip from the sequence, pasted it into after fx.

  • Serious error using merged clips

Premiere crashes when I try to use a merged clip. When I double click on the clip it loads into the preview panel, but when I perform any actions such as overwrite or insert or if I right-click on the clip I get this message: "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down..."
    Here are the details:
All the clips I am using in the project are merged clips.
The video clips are AVCHD with reference audio, and the audio clips are .wav 48 MHz.
Running a Mac Pro OS X 10.9.3 and the latest update of Premiere Pro CC 2014
    I have tried the following:
turned off GPU accelerated preview in favour of software only
deleted the merged clip and re-created it (in case it was somehow corrupt)
opened the project with a different system user (to rule out user settings)
started a project from scratch, merging the same clips and then performing similar tasks
    emptied the After Effects cache
spent 90 minutes with tech support controlling my computer trying various things I'm not certain about
Wasting too much time. Tempted to revert to FCP until this is resolved. Please help.

I don't know about cc 2014, but in the past 5 months working in cc 7.2.1 & 7.2.2 I've found merged clips to be incredibly unstable/buggy. In one case a handful of merged clips were preventing me from importing sequences from other projects. I've run into issues where the match-frame function doesn't work with them, and worst of all every time I've used them they've significantly slowed down premiere (creating a very annoying lag between every interaction with the program).
My workaround has been to avoid merged clips at all costs, and instead use single-angle multicams to group video & audio from different sources. It ain't ideal, but it's been a far more stable workflow.
Don't know about the 2014 version - I'm afraid to give merged clips another serious try after all the headaches they've caused in the past. If anybody has seen improved stability with merged clips in the recent update I'd be very interested to hear.

  • Merge Clips is greyed out

I shot video on Canon 5D, converted to ProRes and imported into FCP 7. Audio was recorded separately on a JVC GY-HM100U (lens shut, so no video footage just sound) and imported into FCP. I've marked in on video and audio clips to merge them, but the merge clips button is greyed out. The clips are in the browser window. I've tried dragging them into the timeline and merging them there. Merge Clips is still greyed out.

  • Strange behavior when I try to match a mpeg2 video with the menu size image

    hello all,
got a strange behavior when I try to match a mpeg2 video with the menu size image,
menu size is 1920 x 1080 (photoshop file)
    mpeg2 video 1920 x 1080 (1second 19 frames)
the idea is to go from the menu link to the next sub menu with a video as transition, using the same image on the video as the menu and then zooming in (in my case through a door) to end up after the zoom in the next level menu.
I try to achieve a smooth change from the first play menu picture to the video image into the next level menu picture,
everything works good but when I watch it on the preview mode on the left and right side of the video it shows a black bar at least 15 to 25 pixel wide, that means the video image appears smaller and it causes a little jump what is preety disturbing and can not be sold as a professional work.
why encore treats the video size and picture differently?
it's gratful appreciated if somebody who got experience in a transition I mentioned obove posting any solution,
    thankl you all

    Hi all
I'm having a very similar problem with Encore. My menu items are distorting (a minor but infuriating squashing top and bottom) when previewed.
    Using Encore,PS,AE CS4
DVD format SD PAL DV widescreen
I created 3 menu frameworks and 3 video transistions to link them in AE. On the final frame of each transistion in AE I saved the frame with Composition>Save Frame to> Photoshop Layers. In PS i added the button functionality and saved.
In Encore I use Dynamic link to import AE transistions as timelines and imported each PS menu twice, once as "menu" and once as an asset.
When I link the timeline transistions to the menu and preview at the point the menu begins the whole image is squashed. When the next transistion is activated the image returns to its original size.
Thinking it was the use of PS that was causing the menus to distort I used the menu asset directly in the time line. Obviously no menu functionality but also no distortion. The AE transistion flowed straight into the "menu" just as I expected.
In the properties panel the menu Aspect Ratio 16:9
The AE transistions PAR is SD PALwidescreen 1.4587.
I did try the Blu Ray suggestion above but the same distortion was apparent.
Any suggestions short of squashing the video to match the menu would be welcomed.
    Thanks

  • Moving project breaks merged clips...

    Hello,
This is a complex and difficult problem to describe by writing, apologies if it's not clear. I've been working for several months on a large project that was shot double system: video imported as Pro Res (shot in HDV) and audio (recorded on DAT) that was transfered to aiff files. So I had 43 cassettes of video (with each shot automaticall being it's own clip - as it was HDV) and then 13 one hour aiff files of the DAT audio. In FCP I broke down each video clip and synced it with it's audio and created merged clips. I had trouble while creating the merged clips as detailed in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1818825&tstart=0). Originally the merged clips when opened has the audio and video totally out of sync and were useless, and when I went back and made the reel names match between the DAT aiff files and the video, then the re-merged the clips they were in sync. So everything has been okay since then.
Now, after working for months on one computer, I moved the entire project to another computer. I copied all of the files from the old computer into the new computer so the files and everything are the same. But upon opening the project on the new computer everything is offline and I need to re-connect all of the media. However when I do reconnect it all, now all of my merged clips (there are atleast 2000 of them) are all out of sync again (of note, when I reconnect I always get the error message "reel names doesn't match" and I choose "continue" as when ever I choose "try again" it wont reconnect the media). Is there any other way around this issue other than having to go back and spend another 3 weeks laboriously manually changing the reel names of and re-re-mergeing each of the thousands of indivdual merged clips (in order to have them be useable, in-sync merged clips)? Even if I do this, I know that in a few weeks I will be bringing the project back to the orginal computer, and again everything will be off line and then I'll have to once again change reel names for each clip, and re-re-re-merged them to get it all working again. Does anyone have any ideas or insights into this issue? Has anyone else atleast had to deal with this issue? Thanks!

It sounds like when you moved the material, you simply copied the folders instead of using Media Manager.
Preventing your problems is why MM exists. While MM may have it's detractors (I've been one of them), it has been improved in the more current FCP versions.
Read very carefully through the section in the Manual that covers it then use it to create a transportable copy of your project.

  • Strange behavior with Zoom and Image control

HELP - I have a strange behavior (bug?) with using Zoom

  • Strange behavior from a PB G4 (Part 2)

On to my next issue. Often when I'm typing the insertion point will jump to someplace other than where it should be or just disappear all together. I'm not doing anything to cause it to do this. I've been being really carefull to not to do anything wrong. I'ts often enough to be a real nuisance. It happened 7 times during my first post (Strange behavior from a PB G4) and 3 times during this one. Please help. Thanks.

Did you use the iFixit website? It has excellent pictures and instructions that are easy to follow.
Replacing any hard disk drive will be challenging for a paraplegic, but with someone's help it can be done fairly inexpensively. There are many tiny fasteners that require tiny tools. Use an egg carton to store them, separated by their location in the PowerBook.
Earlier PowerBooks are easier to work on than later ones.
I still use a PowerBook G4 on occasion, mostly for importing video for editing in iMovie. I upgraded its original 60 GB HD to a much larger one. If you were to do this you would need to locate the PowerBook's original System Install DVD to install and subsequently update OS X and all its original programs.
If you ensure at least a few gigabytes free space, I think most of your problems will be fixed. When free disk space gets down to a few hundred megabytes or less, performance will suffer dramatically. You don't want it to ever get anywhere near that low. Strange things start to happen.
Keep the number of icons on the Desktop to a minimum also. That makes a difference, for reasons that I do not fully understand.

  • Merged Clips Audio Issue

Trying this again, having a major problem since update working with merged clips.  I merge all my video and audio clips in a pre-workflow project in premiere pro.  Just got my footage back from the shoot, labeled and sync'd in the project.
Because Premiere doesn't allow you to have more than 1 project open at a time, I copied the files, closed the pre-workflow project and opened my feature film project I've been working from.  Copied the merged clips bin, I click on a clip, video plays fine but there's no audio playback.
I try importing the files from the pre-workflow project using the import project feature, keep only the actual merged clips (as the rest of my project is this way) still no audio.  I have cleaned my media cache, reset preferences, even uninstalled premiere and redownloaded.  Problem persists.
Can you help me figure out what the issue is so I can get back to making progress on finishing this feature film project?
The only thing different I've done this time that I didn't do last time was copied the audio into the bin with the video clips and merged that way.  Before was putting video clips into my master audio bin and merging.  But I don't see how this could possibly be the problem.

Going to try, but here is my workflow and have not encountered any problems until this last P/U days footage.  I've been doing things this way because I found having all files in the project was causing it to crash constantly when I was working.  I have a new I7' processor IMac with 24 gigs of RAM.  And since Premiere does not allow you to have multiple projects open at the same time (Wish this would change.  Avid and FCP both allowed multiple projects) I have to do things this way.
    Pre-workflow Project File
Label all Video and Audio files to match Scene #'/Takes
Set in points on all video and audio to reflect slate
    Merge Clips
    Working Project File
Import only Merged Clips into Project.  Either via import or copy/paste
Now I've done this workflow from just about the very beginning.  Deleting all of the original source video and all audio clips from my working project so only my bins containing my merged clips remain.  Have had no problems and edit has been smooth.  Did a pickup day last week, followed same steps as I've done in the past, imported the merged clips into my working project and the clips have the audio set to none by default.  Now once I go into the sequence I can manually set it and it's there but I cannot play audio in the source monitor which is how I edit, there's no reason I should have to go back to the crappy FCP way of editing doing the copy and paste from a sequence.

  • Merging clips results in several duplicate audio channels/tracks

I am trying to sync my audio and video in Premiere, and something is screwing it up.
I have my video track, that has 2 audio tracks.
Then I have my polyphonic wav file, that has 5 audio tracks.
    2+5 = 7, right?
So why is it, when I merge my two clips together, that Premiere decides to create 20 additional tracks for my Merged Clip, totaling 27 tracks?! The majority of them are blank/empty/silent. Why is it doing this?

I don't understand this part of your explanation. It's been a while since I've used PE, since FCPX's sync and multicam features work so well.
Why not try a short test – skipping the PE steps entirely. Select two of your clips and let FCP automatically create a test multiclip matching the HVX waveforms with those on the 5D. Open in the Angle Editor – or start a test project and see whether the boom mic track is present.

  • Merging clips in HD 6

Is there any way to merge two or more clips together - within a movie project.
If not... can I take clips, put into timeline, and export into something that would accomplish this...
    Thanks.

    Hi
Merging clips - is very rarely needed - it will playback cont. without any drop-out
Easy way to do this is.
    • Add the duration of the two clips together
    • To them in TimeLine add a text
    • This text should be one letter "Space" = invisibly
    • Duration of text - set the added figure above
    • Drop selected text type on first clip
Now they are merged into one clip

    • QT movie as previous answer
    • Copy back to Camera/tape - Then import BUT IN iMovie pref set "not to import as individual clips"
    Will also do the trick.
