Strange behaviour of some keyboard keys after wake up

Hi. I have an issue with my keyboard on my MBPro (Santa Rosa). I am under snow leopard. If I close my mbp, and thus put it to sleep, When I wake up, some keyboard keys are messed up... they are no more at the correct place and I have to use yhe keyboard viewer to type.
Ex: @ is no more on the no. 2 key, but on the [ key...
To type ` I have to press shift + [ key
For ( it is the 8 key + shift
Does anyone have this issue?

Hi l, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I agree with captfred, you definitely want to run that update, and then repair permissions. If that doesn't do the trick, try removing the batt and running. In some cases the batt causes pressure on a cable between it and the inside of the MBP case, resulting in keyboard/trackpad issues.

  • Pavilion 15-b142dx Some Keyboard keys not working

A friend gave me their Pavilion 15-b142dx  sleekbook, apparently AFTER they spilled some type of liquid in it. I was able to revive the computer, however, there is still a problem with the keyboard.  When the keyboard is installed in the laptop, several of the keys do not work. However, when I take it out (and suspend it with some plastic) it works fine.  I have disconnected the ribbon cable, and taken some alcohol to clean up the area. I have also been able to run the HP diagnostics on bootup, both short and extended versions, and they come back ok.  Additionally, I connected an external keyboard and it worked fine. I have searched the forum for this type of question and didn't see it. Has anyone else had this problem, or am I looking at replacing the keyboard?
I currently am running windows 8.1. I do not get any error messages, but I did notice HP does not include a keyboard key test in its diagnostics.

    Hi there @MrKen99
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that some of your keys are not working, after some liquid decided to pay an unwanted visit to the board. I am happy to assist you with this.
In my sordid past I have seen some really messed up keyboards, due to similar things, coffee, cola, water, whatever. My most memorable was someone who brought me a computer that was used in a kitchen and was close to a deep fat fryer, and the keyboard was not only coated with oil and grease but a build up of fuzzy dust all throughout the keyboard. In that case I recommended a replacement as the cost to clean it was more expensive than a new one.
Anyway, it sounds as if you have already tried to clean it, but if you did not pop off the offending/non-working keys, the contacts could be "tacky". Make note of the keys that are having the problem and treat them individually. This document shows how to remove and replace keys from a standard notebook keyboard.

If you do not have any success doing that then, I would look at either replacing the keyboard, or using an external keyboard. If you choose a replacement you can look at the service manual for it, and it will list the supported parts.

    Hi lialou,
I got your message about the new keyboard failing.  I would recommend doing a full System Recovery to see if that restores the function back to those keys.  Make sure that you back up your data beforehand.

  • Loss of some keyboard commands and wake up

Recently, I have not been able to wake up my computer by pressing keys on my keyboard. I have to move my mouse. I also can no longer "force quit", put to sleep with command/option/Cd eject. There are probably others. I have run disk utility repair, every thing is ok. I imagine I need to trash some preferences?
    thanks

I think your right about the keyboard being bad (don't have a spare). I noticed the tab and capslock don't work either. I should get a new computer but don't want to deal with it now. It's worth $50 to delay the purchase. Do keyboards have to be mac specific? Any suggestions, I've been happy with the Apple keyboard that came with the computer.
    thanks
PS Just remembered spilling coffee on the keyboard last week. I'm reasonably sure that did it

  • Some keyboard keys not working

    Hey guys,
I've been having problems with my keyboard in my MB.
Every now and then certain keys stop working for no apparent reason.
    The keys are:
    Right Shift
    Right Command
    Both square bracket keys
    Equals & Plus button
    The 0 button
    Arrow keys
These stop and start working randomly, but not all at the same time. However, it is never just one, it is at least 2.
I have not been able to figure out what is causing this, and a restart doesn't help, after a while the keys just start working again.
When they aren't working, keyboard viewer doesn't show up as the key has been pressed, so I think it may be a hardware issue.
My Macbook has never been dropped or had anything spilt on the keyboard.
    Any suggestions would be awesome.
    Ta,
    Ryan.

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM. If neither work, you may need to get your keyboard replaced.

  • Qosmio F750 - some keyboard keys stoped working

    Hello
I have a Toshiba Qosmio F750 since 3 months ago. The other day, i just powered the laptop and noticed some keys (a,b,n,enter...) were not working at all. I tried to clean blowing under the keyboard and nothing. Also in the windows booting these keys dont work. Anyone with the same problem?
Someone knows how to solve this?
Is quite annoying having to use an external keyboard with a 3 months old laptop....
    thank you!

    Hi
I think only keyboard replacement could solve your keyboard button problem.
It looks like the single buttons are faulty and since the single buttons cannot be removed, the whole keyboard needs to be replaced.
Get in contact with an local Toshiba ASP. The warranty seems to be valid and the fix should be done free of charge sorry to say this but it seems you had simply a bad luck :(

  • Some unresponsive keys after login

After logging in, my keyboard will not react to certain keys like the spacebar, tab key and arrow keys. The other keys work normal and the mouse works normal. I have to hit the spacebar about ten times hard and then the keys will start to work normally again. I have lifted out the keyboard to see whether the cable or keys look damaged, but that does seem the case, especially since the keys work normal once they start working again. If it is the hardware of my keyboard which causes this, is there anything I can do?
Titanium Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi, Anton. It sounds as though your keyboard is going bad. If you have access to an external USB keyboard, plug that in and see whether it misbehaves in the same way at the same times as the built-in keyboard. If it does, the problem is in software or in your Powerbook. If a USB keyboard works properly when your built-in keyboard doesn't, the built-in keyboard needs to be replaced.

  • Some keyboard keys of Satellite A660-11M don't work

    hi,
the keyboard of my Satellite A660-11M is not working properly. Some keys won't type, others would type the wrong letter/number.
Does replacing the keyboard usually fix the problem? Are keyboards available for this model?
By the way, juice was accidentally spilled on it weeks ago, so i assume it's the cause of the problem.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi
Yes, possibly the issue is related to the spilled juice.
I think only the keyboard replacement could help you
The new keyboard can be ordered from a Toshiba ASP in your country.

  • Strange behaviour wireless apple keyboard - bluetooth

I cleaned my keyboard and forgot to turn it off previously.  Since then, the arrow keys instead of moving one character to left or right, go to the end of the row in a text document, and the up and down go half page up or down, almost as a page up or page down key of a pc keyboard.  also the delete key deletes to the right and not to the left.
    any clues?
I have used many layuots, us, us - international and so on and always the same.
Any ideas on how to reset this?  Is it a keyboard problem or a software problem in my macbook pro?
I am using a hewlett packard wired keyboard now with no problem, but the macbook identified it properly, maybe there is a way to have the macbook pro "re-identify" the bluetooth aluminum compact keyboard i have, and rest the problem?
    thanks !

  • Dv6 2190us - some keyboard keys are not working

    Hi there all,
My sis bought me Dv6 2190us laptop last Feb 2010 and I just got it now. The problem now is, some of the keys like the letters - W, S, and X are not working so I am not able to log-in to Window 7. The laptop is brandnew, the keys are not sticking but the only unusual thing is that , the battery was attached to the laptop for one year.... Couldnt this be the reason and what should I do to resolve this? Appreciate your kind help!
    Thanks in advance,..

also having this issue with 6 month old dv6 3031 but my entire line beginning with a to enter key will not respond so i cannot do any tests or what not. i was advised to do bios setup by clicking F10 when notebook is booting up, arrow across to Diagnostic menu and perform PRIMARY HARD DISK SELF TEST. of course i was unable to do this as my enter key does not work but maybe you could give it a go and have more luck

  • Some keyboard keys don't work; most are fine

    Hi guys,
I have a really bizarre problem with my first generation 15" MBP. When I turned it on today, I realized that the down and left arrows don't work, yet the up and left arrows do. Unfortunately, I've also since realized that the tab button doesn't work, nor does the space bar! It's just a few sporadic - but very important - keys that don't work. The computer hasn't been through any trauma - no drops, no water damage, no poor working conditions...this just happened out of the blue. Does anyone have any idea as to what might have caused this, and if there's anything I can do myself to fix it? Oh, and I have Windows XP installed via bootcamp, and the same problem exists there - so it's definitely a hardware issue...right?
See this link for a photo I took of the keyboard, with the buttons that no longer work highlighted in red. http://img193.imageshack.us/i/keyboardwjp.jpg/

There are two basic possible problems though your description of which keys are non-functional leads me to think the first is rather unlikely. The first is that the keyboard cable may have worked itself partially loose. The cable can work itself loose without any trauma involved - we see one every couple of months where I work. The second possibility is physical disruption/damage to the individual keys, like water damage or something small working its way under the key to impede its ability to touch the contacts. I'd suggest going to an Apple store or repair center.

  • Satellite L360D - Some keyboard keys malfunctions

Toshiba laptop Satellite L360D. Spacebar does not function & right hand shift tab
    Any views?

    Hi
    Yes, Ive got an idea
In my opinion the internal keyboard needs to be replaced.
There is no other solution for that since single buttons are not replaceable.
In the meantime you can use an external USB keyboard. It should work properly and could be a good option until the internal keyboard has been replaced.

  • Dv7-3065dx Entertainment Notebook: Some keyboard keys not working

    Hello,
My hp dv7-3065dx entertainment notebook is missing, (will not type), letters q,w,e,r,u,i,o,p. My knowledge of computer operation let alone technology is scant as I've been MIA for the last 20 years so be gentle with advice please. Thanks Everybody!

Resolved! The numlock turns on by default when you connect to the computer. Thanks for your question. When I pressed the keys 'iou', nothing appeared on my Dell Optiplex Desktop whereas numbers 456 showed up on thinkpad. The numbers 456 gave away the problem. I still notice that numlock comes on randonly when I plug to different computer. Thanks to all replied. Hopefully, this experience would help someone in the future.
