Strange Black Outline Box Highlighting EVERYTHING after 10.4.7

Strange thing has happened to me since updating Tiger.
Now in every app the active text or button is surrounded by a thinline black box. I can't make it stop.
I originally did the upgrade via System Update, then repaired permissions as I usually do after an update. After I discovered the problem, I downloaded the Combo Update and tried again. No luck.
Perhaps this might also be a factor--my 19 month old daughter got to my system and when I intervened I found that she had opened up Automator. Via random keystrokes and mouse clicks, could she have used Automator to screw up my Finder.
Also, under the Apple pulldown, I now have two separate restart, shut down, and log out options. Is this true for everyone after this update?
This is my first major OS X screw up ever. HELP?!?

I just figured this out moments before reading your replies.
I had been using an external sound card and was not wearing my headphones. Once I popped them on, I heard the synthetic voice and realized what had happened.
Thanks, everyone!!

  • Trouble removing black outline box with menubar widget

I have been tweaking this Spry menubar for weeks trying to iron out the kinks and it has been immensely frustrating!  I get it working in Safari and then the submenus are misaligned in IE.  Also there is a strange black outline which manifests itself as a thin black line in Safari and a large black outline box in IE.  Cannot figure out where that is coming from!
I think i've made a bit of a mess of it now.  Any suggestions to get it working properly would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

What you are seeing is a border around the <ul> entity for the submenu. To get rid of it, comment out the CSS in the SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css as follows:
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul
    /*     border: 1px solid #000;

  • How to get rid of black outline boxes persisting on screen

Black outline boxes have started appearing around objects and icons that I’ve clicked on or text areas I've filled in. Sometimes these boxes persist on the screen in its original location until I go to a new program.
For example – in PhotoShop, a black outline box appeared on the vertical slider area and then stayed in the same location on the screen until I switched to Safari – which then got it’s own boxes.
    I have a clear 20” Cinema Display.

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences and check if VoiceOver is turned on; if so, turn it off.

  • Black outlined boxes around selections

    Hi,
Just started up my Imac Intel today and suddenly when I select something from the desktop (as in click on it) or from a menu bar, a black outlined box appears around it. This has never happened before.
I also found that under the apple icon there are 2 restarts, 2 shutdowns and 2 logouts for my user name.
Any suggestions? I'm downloading the OSX update right now to install.
    Thanks
    Mina

  • PDF has strange black outline at printers end?

    Hi all
I am trying to send a PDF of a book to a printing company in Japan (clients choice!), and I am doing everything I would usually do, supplying with crop marks and bleed.
When they open the PDF it seems to have cropped many of the pages and put a black outline around it.
I insert a screen shot (note this is page 7.  Page 6 is NOT white, therefore it has removed the crop on the left side!)
Any advice gratefully received.  At my end, some of the pages do seem to have a black outline for some reason on my PDF but they fall outside of the crop marks.
    Thanks!

  • Indesign document PDFs with Black outline around pages ... and ...

    Hi guys
I have posted this problem in the acrobat section but have thought it could be an indesign issue also.
Basically I am PDFing an InDesign CC document with crop and bleed for a printer.  For some reason, on some pages, it adds a black/grey outline to pages, and in some cases seems to crop the page so there is no bleed.
Any thoughts?  Original post with image can be seen here: PDF has strange black outline at printers end?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply Rob.  This is not the case - I know this as other pages in the document have there bleed correct (5mm all around).  I have resolved the black outline issue, but now have this bleed issue.  On my screen the PDF looks fine but for some reason when the printer opens it, they do not get the bleed on the left edge!
    Thanks

  • Black box highlighting everywhere I click

I came home from work today and found that when I click icons on the desk top there is a black box outlining the icon. It also happens when I'm in safari. When ever I click in a text box a black outline highlights around the text box I'm typing in. My question is this a setting that potentially got changed by one of my nosey siblings or is this a bigger problem.
The second problem I have is when I'm in finder and click the apple at the top of the screen there is two choices for "restart" "shut down" and "log off." For each choice one has three dots after it and the other doesn't. When I click the one with the three dots a box comes up saying "will shutdown/restart in....." and if I select the one that doesn't have the three dots it restarts or shuts down right away. Does anyone know why this is happening and if so what can I do to fix it?
Here are two pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
    Press command+f5
(You turned on VoiceOver by accident at some point)
PS. You can do simple screen grabs via pressing commandshift4 rather than photographing your screen

  • Black outline appeared after accidental button mashing.

After accidentally button mashing my keyboard a black outline now appears over anything that pressing "tab" and anything I type in or click on. It happens all over the computer not just Safari, also while scrolling it does not stay with the typing box it says in the same place on screen. While trying to fix it my Apple Menu now has the following options -Force Quit... -Force Quit Safari -Restart... -Restart -Shut Down... -Shut Down -Log Out __... -Log Out __. Also Under Safari and File -Private Browsing... -Private Browsing -Close Window -Close Window -Close All Windows -Close All Windows.
Im sure it can be turned off but how?

You've turned Voice Over on. Command F5 will turn it off. (Or open the System Preferences and look for the Accessibility tab - last in the third row I think)

How much data is being backed-up from each Mac?  (see what's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options).
Is there any other data on your Time Capsule, besides the backups?
Most likely, there just isn't room.  Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't.  Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).
Also see #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for more details.

  • Strange Black Box around every prompt I am given...

This is very strange. I started up iChat for the first time on MBP and am now having a very strange occurance. At every prompt there is a strange black box around it. For example, right now there is a black box around the back arrow in my safari browser. When I open the finder there is a black box around my hard drive. I just opened system preferences and there is a black box around the back arrow in system preferences box...

heheh ya it's funny when you look at the people who just hear the mac talking and they don't know wat to do.. but ya.. universal access is only for that.. for the F8 key is exposè, which is nothing related to Universal Access at all, so you can keep Universal Access options off and exposè will still running
Anyway, you can configure both from the System Preferences.

  • Black dialogue box onscreen describing everything being done and i don't know how to get rid of it

my mac book pro has a black dialogue box near the top of the screen that explains everything that is currently being done and i don't know how to remove it. Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of it.black dialogue box

Could be you enabled Voice over by mistake. Take a look in System Preferences->Accessibility;Voice Over and see if it is enabled.

  • Mysterious Black outline around selected items???

This morning, when I started my computer there is a Black outline appearing around the selected item or window throughout my system... For example; around the icon/folder/file selected in the finder, around the entire Safari browser window, around various items in Mail- the inbox portion, around where the flagged message icon would appear when a message is selected. etc. The same thing is happening in some other programs as well. Everything appears to be working just fine & I have tried restarting, repairing permissions, cleaning cashe, zap P-RAM, etc. Any idea what is causing this?? Is it a problem. or just something screwy that will hopefully go away? Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Jeremy

Found the answer.. Turned VoiceOver Off. Must have gotten accidentally turned on Last Friday after too many F5 refreshes during the woot!-Off!!!

  • Red box Highlighting the entire work area of the Block diagram

I have a thin red box highlighting the entire work are of the block diagram...I've checked for breakpoints but dont see any. I run the code and after completion the entire work area turns black for a couple seconds and then the red box flashes and the continue button on the tool bar is hightlighted. Any assistance would be great
    tks

    This is indeed a breakpoint.
You should be able to clear it by selecting your breakpoint tool from the tools palette and clicking outside of your main code area.
When your breakpoint tool is going to set a breakpoint, the tool is filled in with black. When is is going to clear a breakpoint, it is not filled.
You can also search for breakpoints from the Edit menu Find function. Click the Select Object icon goto Others and select Breakpoint. This will find all your breakpoints. Sometimes they get set by mistake and you don't know it.

  • Laptop extremely slow boot up & slow everything after faulty boot up! HELP!

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right section of the forums but I sure hope it is because I extremely need help.
My laptop was working completely fine a week ago! But then, all of a sudden, I turned it on and it went to a black screen with a bunch of numbers and letters. It was asking me to put in the start up CD(?). I had no idea what to do and didn't have the 'start up CD'(whatever that may be..) with me, so I pressed the power button. It turned off and turned back on.
But instead of working normally, it took about ten minutes to start up with about five minutes of that being a black screen with a mouse after putting in my user password. And now every program I have takes forever to open and just everything is extremely slow.
Please help. I really want my old, functional laptop back.

Your best bet is probably contacting Toshiba Tech Support:  (800) 457-7777
The free version of Malwarebytes is just an AV scanner. Sometimes I use it as a second opinion AV scanner. I install it, run it then uninstall it when it's finished. It's advisable to have a reatime AV program. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, works well, and doesn't slow the system. You can get it HERE free.

Backup your files. Create recovery DVD's. Use good quality DVD-R disks. You'll need them to install the software if you have to replace the HD. If you don't make them and the HD fails you'll have to purchase them from Toshiba. They cost about $30.
