Strange boot problems with my old iMac G3

Hello! I just bought an old slot-loading iMac G3 about 2 or 3 months ago, with Mac OS 9.2.2 (just recently installed Mac OS 10.2 on it), a 6 GB hard disk, and 128 MB of RAM. After I installed OS 10.2 on it (the installation was rather slow, though it went smoothly), it started acting rather strange. I restarted the machine after the install of the new OS, it showed the gray Apple logo in the center of the screen, and then, a strip of white appeared across the screen horizontally, with many black lines appearing in the white strip vertically. After this incident, I called an Apple Store near me. I told them this, and they suggested that the video card was going bad. I told them that the screen worked perfectly when I booted from the CD, so they said that that wasn't it. I told them that the hard drive was making weird noises when I tried to boot, so they said I might have to get a new hard drive for it. Does anybody think that this is the problem? I do, primarily because it is an 11-year-old machine. If anybody thinks so, tell me. Oh, and if you know where I can get one cheap (an IDE one), please let me know that, too. Thanks!

If you do not have any OS 9.2 or earlier old Apple applications, you won't
need that OS installed into the computer; now that you have confirmed a
correct Firmware Update has been installed into the computer already.
Oh, by doing the 'erase & install' the previous OS 9 install would be wiped;
as would be the important (for OS 9 boot) OS 9 Drivers. The drivers are
usually available in install options from the OS X install disc, in initial setup.
Sorry, I no longer have an install disc for any full version of OS 9.2 anymore;
and mistakenly gave a nice one away with a complete computer deal to a
friend's buddy, for a fantastic price. Although they haven't used it, it is not
available to get it back either! Such is the luck of being nice to the clueless.
The older OS 9.2 full installer would allow new installs and then the last step
would probably be a download to make the final grade of 9.2.2. Somewhere
I have a special OS 8.6 full install tech disc; that's good for older beige Macs.
An 'erase and install' probably would be adequate to install another working
system; sometimes, it is best to use the disk utility on the booted OS X install
disc and see if there is an option there to secure-erase or overwrite the drive
with zeros. That may may not have been available in Jaguar 10.2. - I forget.
{The update steps for Jaguar 10.2 to 10.2.8 and whatever other updates are
there at the Support web site downloads page; or if you have an internet
access, the Software Update in the system should find them for you. There
may (or may not) be newer Flash player versions, and maybe a few OK
browsers still available for download which could work OK in Jaguar. Most
of those won't work well even in Panther 10.3.9. They do have older version
browsers in the browser home pages, and should list what they work with.}
If the hard disk drive is making odd noises, you probably should replace it with
a new ATA/IDE (PATA) type of drive; within specs to match what the iMac G3
supports; since a noise means something mechanical is wearing out. They can
also wear out and not make a clicking or grinding noise. A tiny whirl and a bit
of read/write noise, barely audible, would be the better sound. The iMac G3 has
no fans, so when it is correctly running and healthy, only the optical drive and
an occasional very slight to no noise, would be normal.
Other World Computing may have a replacement hard disk drive; they have a
fair degree of parts for a variety of Mac computer models, including RAM. To
get into the computer may require some take-apart skills, to replace parts or
upgrade a drive; or replace the clock battery.
Perhaps one of the techie users in this forum can suggest something else to
check or do with the computer, if they happen across this thread. I'm not sure
what else to suggest at this point. A newer OS X version would be better, too.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Strange Boot problem with iMac OSX 10.7.5 (Boot loop, not working safe boot etc.)

    Hey guys,
I've got a strange problem with my iMac Late 2009. This morning it didn't want to boot (grey screen with turning wheel). Yesterday when I shut it down everything was fine. Last backup was finished three minutes before. So I was a bit shirty but noch scared of any data loss.
    I tried  the following things:
    1. boot recovery and check hdd (it's a new one, only second day back from apple store for replacing seagate hdd), everythings fine
    2. try to boot in safe mode, did not work!
    3. try to boot in verbose mode, did work until it stopped. Screenshot of the last lines of log is within this post
    4. I used my TM backup and afterwards I could boot! Strange, because as I sad the backup finished a few minutes beforce I left my mac and shut it down
Now I'm a bit scared of shutting it down again But what would be the next step to find the error? My first thought were some third party kernel extensions, but that would not affect a safe mode boot, am I right? I have a Macbook Air here which is setup nearly identical to my mac and it's working. Could it be a hardware fault? Maybe you've got an idea.
    Thanks!
    Max

at the moment it seems to be a corrupted time machine backup from my old hard drive (new one has a runtime of 27 hours). So I'll will try a clean install of my system at least, when I got the time. sh%&$ !

  • Problems with my old iMac 500MHz with 128MB of RAM

    Ok guys...
Lucky for me I have a brand new intel pro duo iMac.. but I still have the urge to fix (or at least try to fix) my old mac.
Its an iMac 500MHz with 128MB of RAM running OSX 10.2.8 and its giving me tons of problems...
But theres one problem thats bugging me the most! For whatever reason I can't click and drag files! You'd think it would be the mouse... but the thing is that it registers a hold down click cause I can make a highlight box on the desktop, highlight text, ect.
Is there some known "you can drag files" problem with OSX? It doesnt sound like that big of a deal.. but it ***** when I cant drag files in or out of the trash... put apps in the application folder... ect.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hello Vaseline,
Welcome to the discussions area. My first thought is that with your ram at 128 you are just about at minimum.. I would definately up the ram.
Secondly....look at this link and see the advice given by others. Go to the advice of dale which will lead to Dr Smokes link and follow his instructions

This may not be an exact solution but will help you get started....Good Luck with this problem and the new Mac.................Jim

  • Strange booting problems with Neo4 Platinum.

I have been searching this board to find anything that might help with a problem encountered when booting my recently built system.
The build had gone very well considering the new technology (easiest ever build and system start up) and the system was up and working 100%.
Suddenly I had problems logging out and shutting down Windows and also problems restarting. The system would hang at the initial "Platinum" splash screen and the only way to progress was to hit reset.
At this point, the booting process would move on to the point where the windows boot process begins and then hang again. After hitting reset again, the system would boot to the point where it informed me that Windows had failed to start giving me the boot options form which I would pick "Start Windows Normally".
From this point the system booted up and the Windows GUI came up and the system ran OK.
I have spent all weekend breaking down the sytem and rebuilding it again and reinstalling XP Pro - no difference - still booting problems.
Thanks to the hero who discovered that the problem may be related to a USB keyboard.
I had changed my old wiireless PS2 keyboard for a new shiny USB wireless keyboard and that was the cause of my problem.
I've replaced my old keyboard and the system is back to 100%.
Thanks MSI - you could have put something up in the FAQ which might have saved me 48 hours of frustration.
Thanks guys - I'm almost back to being a sane and rational person!

    Congratulations firewire....

Just bought a new iMac, with Lion, for my wife.  When is was wifi with her old iMac on line with it's printer, HP C6200, no problems printing.  Now that it is by itself it does not recognize the C6200...It recognizes my laser hp 1012 and laser hp 6300 but will not print to them wanting an autenication

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. • Brand new MacBook -- how can it communicate with my old iMac

I just got a new 2.2 GHz MacBook (black) with the current version of Leopard installed (10.5 I guess, I'm posting this from my PC at work, so I can't check). No real problems so far. I've been able to access the Internet through my cable modem at home (had to unplug my desktop, more on that below) and through Wi-Fi.
I still have and plan to keep my G3 iMac desktop machine, running OS 10.2.8, and my basic question is how I can get my two Macs to talk with each other. I don't currently have any sort of network at home -- I'm the only computer user. Setting up an AirPort station would make sense, since it would allow me to use the MacBook anywhere in the house. I'd need to install an AirPort card in the iMac, and the card that's currently available in the online Mac store is AirPort Extreme, which I don't think would work with the old iMac. (The specs say "AirPort Extreme Cards cannot be used in AirPort-ready computers with an AirPort Card slot.") Does any one know if there's a way to use the same AirPort station with both computers.
Since the primary reason for the computers to communication with each other would be to share files, connecting them with some sort of cable would be another option. When I asked the Apple store salesman what I would need, he sold me an Ethernet cable, but that doesn't seem to do the job. If I connect it to the Ethernet ports on both machines, they don't seem to see each other. Do I need some kind of router to connect both machines? Actually if there was a router that connected both computers to the cable modem, one cable could go to the iMac and the other to an AirPort station that would communicate with the MacBook, solving my issue above. Can I do anything via USB ports?
If all else fails, I could e-mail files to myself, but seems a rather roundabout way of doing things.

Usually you use a router as the hub for the computers to talk to each other over Ethernet wires or WiFi. When you hook the two computers up directly, you need a cross-over Ethernet cable, which is different from a standard Ethernet cable. (Although some of the newer computers can sense and use either, but I'm not sure about the older G3.)
A wired/wireless router would definitely be the way to go, why not take advantage of your MacBook wireless capability? This will let you share the internet connection, share files, and a printer between the two computers. Just about any router would work from Netgear, Linksys, Newer Technology, or the Apple Airport. Using an Airport Extreme Base Station would allow you to use an Ethernet cable for the G3 iMac and the WiFi for the Macbook. I currently use one this way with my older G3 Desktop and a MacBook. (I think the first time you start up the Airport you configure it over the Ethernet cable, I don't remember if you can do it wirelessly or not the first time.) You plug the cable modem into the router, then each computer into the router, (or connect over WiFi).
Once you have the Airport set up you can turn on file sharing and access each other's hard drive and printer over the network. Should you ever get a PC or have a visitor with one, they can connect also. Set up the password protected encryption and don't broadcast the network name so passersby can't see and connect to your network.

  • Strange major problem with 975X PowerUp Intel MOBO

I’m suddenly having a strange major problem with a MSI 975X Platinum PowerUP Edition V2.1 MS-7246 Intel socket 775 motherboard. Previously, it had given me no problems at all.
    It went like this:
Powered on system in the morning, booting from a cold start.
Hit DEL key to get into the BIOS.
Missed the window and the system booted into Windows normally.
Re-started the system from within Windows.
Hit DEL key to get into the BIOS and was successful the second time.
Hit the ENTER key on the first item “Standard CMOS Features”.
The DATE, TIME and other information was displayed on the next screen, but at this point, the BIOS screen became completely unresponsive to any keyboard input.
The only thing I could do at that point was to power off.
Subsequent power on boot-ups resulted in the system always freezing at the BIOS splash screen after the video card sign-on.
I have switched power supplies, hard drives, keyboards and video cards. I have disconnected everything except the video card, keyboard and one RAM module. I have switched the four RAM modules around and then reduced the RAM to one 256MB module in the proper slot. I even changed the battery on the MOBO, in case it had shorted out and removed and re-seated the BIOS chip. It still halts at the BIOS splash screen.
The BIOS chip can’t be completely dead, because I powered off and pushed the BIOS reset button on the MOBO to reset the BIOS to the factory defaults. When I re-booted, I could tell that it had actually reset to the factory defaults because I had previously set the BIOS to reboot the system on resumption of power and the factory default was to remain off until the power button was pushed, which was now the default.
I’m stumped! All I can think of is to get a new pre-programmed BIOS chip and see if that makes any difference, but I’m not sure this system is even worth the expense with no guarantee of success. Any suggestions on how I might get past the BIOS splash screen or do I for sure have a corrupt BIOS chip?

System specs as per the posting guidelines -
Board: MSI 975X Platinum PowerUP Edition V2.1 MS-7246 Intel socket 775
Bios: Version (can’t recall & can’t check since it won’t go past the BIOS splash screen)
VGA: ASUS EN7600GS nVidia GeForce 7600GS PCI-e 256MB DDR2 (also tried new XFX nVidia
             Geforce 210 PCI-e 2.0 512MB DDR3)
PSU: Chiefmax 680W ATX (also tried new OCZ 700W ATX)
    CPU: Intel 2.8GHz LGA-775 Core2 Duo Dual-Core Processor
    MEM: 4 x Samsung 512MB 1Rx8 PC2-5300U (2GB total)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA2 (also tried Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA2)
    COOLER: Intel OEM LGA 775 fan/heatsink C25897-001
    OC: No
    OS: Vista Home Premium 32-bit
I have been through the BIOS reset procedure several times and pretty much as outlined. As I said before, I could tell that it had taken a reset to the factory defaults, because the power on option had changed.

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

There is nothing to do, unless you buy a new computer.
Mac OS 10.5.8 or later is required.

  • Poll: Do you have cold boot problem with SB X-FI Fatal1t

    Hi guys:
I have post a thread regarding the cold boot problem with SB X-FI Fatalty and OCZ GameXStream 600W SLI power supply combination. Apparently, no one has answer to that . In addition, I have recently RMA'd my psu and received a brand-new unit. The same problem still exists. If the problem is really with the power supply, doesn't matter what kind of the setup I have, I should still have the cold-boot problem. However, it doesn't seem like that. Doesn't matter what kind of cards I put on the motherboard, as long as the SB X-FI Fatalty card is there, there is cold boot problem (even with the setup of cpu, mother, ram, and the sound card only, WITHOUT video card and harddri've). And for other different setup without the SB X-FI Fatalty card, there is no cold boot. The cpu and memory are running at stock speed.
My post regarding the cold boot issue:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=79753
There is one user on the forum saying he has the same problem. Therefore, I think it might be the imcompatibility between the X-FI Fatalty and OCZ GameXStream PSU.
I would like to know how many people that has the same problem that I am having. So I can possibly narrow down the problem and contact OCZ tech support or creative tech support with more information. It would also be benefitical to those who have the same problem as I do.
Please post your system setup as well in the thread.
Greatly appreciate your opinions. Message Edited by White_Hair on 2-02-200604:58 AM

I would venture to say that it isn't your powersupply, but more likely the X-Fi. I had troubles with my system, until I pulled out my X-Fi and replaced it with a non Creative Labs sound card. One of my troubles, which I incorrectly blamed on my powersupply was the ASUS A8R-MVP motherboard I had and the X-Fi XtremeMusic card, was after gaming for 4 hours, was the?sudden reboot of my system. Powersupply before, was an Antec TrueControl 2 550watt PSU. As it stands right now, I no longer have the parts mentioned and have a decent 700watt powersupply in my system, along with an ABIT AT8 32X motherboard. As you have probably seen there are a lot of problems with the X-Fi soundcards, and I in my right mind can't blame the motherboard, powersupply, motherboard chipset, ram, or any other component in ones system, if one is having trouble other than the X-Fi itself. I'll be honest, there is something quite frankly wrong with the X-Fi, and exactly what that is, I'll probably never know like most people.

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum cold boot problem with 165 opteron?

I have this board and have a cold boot problem with my opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Its starting to get very anooying.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
    165 opty dual core
    2X1GB Ballistix PC4000
    160GB sata2
    7800GTX
    X-Fi platinum
    600 watt seasonic PSU

Well I am running them at the rated speed of 250 and the rated timings of 3-4-4-10 on the rated 2.8 volts. Ballistix have been known to die quickly when you throw to many volts at them for some reason. I dont get the cold boot problem with the OCZ. Once I finally get it to boot with the Ballistix it works just fine but the next morning I play hell to get it to boot again. I dont even get the main screen to let me get into bios. It just stays black. I have done all kinds of stress testing and ran memtest with no problems. I am really at a loss here.
