Strange bug -- pull a clip into the timeline, now I can't see it!

Has anyone else had this happen, and have they managed to fix it?
After importing video into iMovie 06, when I pull a clip into the timeline I suddenly get only audio, no video. The screen is black. I'm stumped.

Hi,
this has happened both to an existing project that I had in iMovie 5 and a new one that I started on iMovie 6. The clips look ok in the clip viewer, then in the timeline they become just black squares which play nothing. I have managed to get some of them to work by removing the transitions that I had in on the clips although I am not sure quite why that worked. As well as just black, I have also had just white when I try to play clips.
There seems to be a further problem with the transitions in that the application will not let me progress on to a selected clip (which is not black) while there is a transition in place. It continues just to play the last clip that was successfully selected (or stays on a black clip) regardless of what is highlighted. As soon as the transition is removed, I can then view the selected clip which makes me wonder if the issue is tied to the transitions...If you have transitions in your timeline, it may be worth removing them to see if this helps you get the clip visibility back although it has not worked in all cases for me.

Technically, to make the function keys work you don't need to change the second box to dash. I don't know why I gave that advice, but it isn't necessary. I guess I said that simply because that's what I have it set to.
The reason there are two boxes is so that you can set Exposé to using both the function keys and the mouse. For example, if I have +All Windows+ set to F9 and Secondary Mouse Button, then it will show all open windows if I click F9 or right-click. That is why you actually don't need to have the second boxes for any of these set to dashes. You could set them to your mouse buttons, or if you wanted you could set the first box of any of these to any function key, as long as it isn't set to the same one as the key you want to use for your shortcuts within FCE.
I hope this made sense, I realize that I might not have explained it very clearly.

  • Why can't I drag a clip into the timeline?

I just loaded PP CD5 onto my Win 7 laptop.  I can import movie clips into my project, but I can't drag any of those clips into the timeline.  When I try to drag them, I get a hand with a "do not enter" symbol.  No error messages of any kind.
I vaguely remember having this same issue when I loaded PP CS5 on my Win 7 desktop several months ago, and I thought I found something on the forums that told me how to fix it, but I can't find it now.  Perhaps a change in the preferences?
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Did you actually create a sequence? If not, go to File > New > Sequence, or drag one of your clips to the New Item icon at the bottom of the Project Panel. You can also click that to get the New Sequence option.

  • Pasting Clips into the Timeline cuts content?

Why is it that when I paste a clip into the timeline (video only - no audio)
it cuts the audio track (sometimes erasing a portion equal to the
    incoming clip)?
I end up pasting content past the end of the timeline, and dragging
it far back to the left, which takes up a lot of time...

I was having the same problem whether I dragged or pasted,
I thought it was the same root problem, sorry.
    Will try what you recommend.
    EDIT:
The downward arrow works fine for dragging, but what causes the other arrow?

  • How do I insert a video clip into the timeline?

Do you happen to know how I could insert a video clip into the middle of a movie like you do in FCP? Can you add tracks and insert the clip above the spot i need to change for each movie.
I don't want to render the whole movie (convert it into a MPeg2) each time.

No - DVD timelines are a little different to FCP. If you need to add a clip to the stream, you need to split the exisitng clip (you could trim it back to where you want to insert the new piece) and drag the new piece onto the same timeline. If you trimmed the existing piece then add another instance of it to the timeline and trim the new part from the left until you get to what you want as the out point.
If you have a collection of video clips on your DVDSP timeline, simply dragging a new one on will shuffle the others along appropriately. However, the audio will not shuffle with them, and you'll end up moving it all manually.
The very best thing is to create the timeline precisely as you want it in FCP and encode it to MPEG2 before bringing it in to DVDSP. Remember that DVDSP is not an editor, it is a place to assemble your work - it won't do anything remotely like FCP in that respect.

  • Why can't I drag clips into the timeline in Premiere Pro CS6?

    hi,
I have clips in my bin and trying to drag them into the timeline since the newest update and I cannot. Anyone having this issue?
    Thanks,
    Renee

Sorry if I am saying something obvious, but do you have a project timeline open?
I suggest you look at a good video tutorial to help you get started with FCP X.

  • How do I correctly insert a clip into the Timeline?

I have edited a clip in Sequence 2 and now wish to insert it into the Timeline and  the middle of my main movie in Sequence 1.
I copied the one in Sequence 2, opened Sequence 1,  and pasted.
The original movie on Track V1 moved to accommodate the new material, but none of the clips on v2 and v3 budged, throwing everything out of sync.
I could select all the tracks and slide them to the right before pasting, but that seems laborious and inexact.
I could find no previous post with precisely this question, nor could I locate an answer in Apple Help. Admittedly. my research, or my understanding of it, may be at fault.
As always, I would appreciate some help. Thank you.

    My error.
Tom had answered this in a previous post and I had inadvertantly been using the wrong keys. Should of course, be Shift - V
    Problem solved!

  • Dropping A Clip into the Timeline

I just started editing with FCE, and I am very new at this video editing outside of imovie. I am trying to edit a project with multiple cameras. I have decided to drop in video to the timeline as I want to switch cameras. When I first did this today FCE seemed to delete the same amount of video as I was dropping into the timeline. This is very desirable as then I am saved the issue of having to edit out the extra footage that is created after I drop in the new video. Problem is it only worked once, and I am not sure what I did to achieve those results.
In short I would like to find out if it is possible to drop video into the timeline, and have the new video "pasted" over the old portion of the video. I hope I am making sense since it is hard to describe what I want to do while I do not know the lingo.

Thank you so much! I tried to find this in the manual, but not knowing what it is called it was obviously not easy. I am glad you were able to figure out what I was talking about despite the shortcomings of my video editing vocabulary.
I am slowly discovery that I love to edit in FCE. I have volunteered to edit the video from a children's play my church puts on each year. Each year it seems to get more difficult as we add more cameras. I finally took the plunge this year with FCE as iMovie did not seem up to the challenge.
I have audio from a professional sound board, and synced that up with the camera that has the best angle. I have locked the sound board audio, and then I delete any new audio that is added when I add video tracks....Which now that I look at my timeline it does not seem to be adding any audio when I add clips from the viewer which suits my purposes just find, but I am not sure why.

  • Dragging clips into the timeline...

I recently installed a trail version of Premiere Pro using Creative Cloud. I imported my MTS files as normal; however, they wouldn't be dragged into the timeline for me to edit and every time (and method) I tried it proved impossible. I then tried importing different file types, but they didn't work either. How do I fix this? I am using a Windows PC.

I have converted m2ts files to .mov in streamclip,  for editing in fce 4.0.1. When I drag them into the fce timeline the clips need rendering, as much as a minute for a 30 second clip. Is this normal? My OS is 10.6.8. My easy setup in fce is apple intermediate codec 720p30. Any advice to avoid the rendereng would be helpful. Ann

To what codec, frame size & frame rate did you convert the files in Streamclip?
If it isn't AIC 720p30, you'll need to render.

Scutter, I haven't read the followup to your marker post yet.
This is the first time I can remember hearing of this particular issue. My first impression on these things is always user error because that's what we see here, we see it much more often than legit FCP, interface or OS issues.
If I was sitting at your desk with you, I'd be asking for much more information like what else you've tried, can you use the mouse at all, do other windows respond, do other applications respond, etc. It's a long list. But by remote control, it's almost impossible to imagine what might going on.
Try to be patient with us, add some information to your original post or start a new thread.

  • My video disappears when I drag it into the timeline...

When I drag a video clip into the timeline, only the audio appears.  I scrubbed through and the audio plays, and the video didn't so it's not hidden somewhere amongst the clips I've already made.  The video plays fine in Quicktime and in the Source monitor within Premiere.  Likewise, my co-worker took the same .mp4 and was able to drag it onto a timeline on her computer and this wasn't an issue for her.  I've already dragged nine other .mp4 videos into this timeline without issue that all have the same codec and frame rate.
I've tried refreshing the program, my computer, and have tried exporting the .mp4 into a .mov as I've read that worked for somebody else who ran into this issue on CS3.  I feel like this is more of a Premiere issue than a video issue.  Does anyone have a solution?
    Thank you.

very strange. can you confirm you have source patching enabled for your video track?
have you also tried using the insert or overwrite edit commands from the source monitor to bring in the video to the timeline?

  • How to do import files from my dslr SD card into the timeline in Final Cut Pro X without losing HD quality?

The video clips appear to be rendering in high quality while in the import bar, but once i drag the clips into the timeline, the quality drops significantly. I have already exported the project, but the final product still shows that the quality is horrible even playing in quicktime.

Need much more information. I don't know what your DSLR is. Start with that. Please give exact specs of the media and of the project properties.
