Strange bug - some images showing up as 'unsupported Image Format'

This could be possibly be the last straw with Aperture for me.
I was 'happily' going through my latest shoot when all of a sudden one of my NEF files opens up and I get a solid dark red screen with the text 'Unsurpported Image Format'.
It's the same RAW format as all the other images and the thumbnail is showing fine. I'm getting the same message with several random images.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I guess I need to restart my mac again! Arrrghhh!

this is a bug, but it seems to happen radomly.
aperture would sometimes complain that some of my NEF, PSD, and TIFF files are unsupported Image Format.
sometimes clicking on another project and then back to where i was corrects the problem, and sometimes it just won't do it. when this happens i restart aperture. i think restarting aperture is the least frustrating work-around.

After loading Lion I cannot open open some pictures in Aperture. I get Unsupported Image Format, all files even the ones I can open are .JPG. Also it tells me picture was made using Canon EOS Rebel with unknown lens.

You mention that 'most' of your files are DNG. Try
running the effected files through Adobe DNG
converter again and then import your reprocessed
files to Aperture and see if the problem persists.
I had a problem with a batch of D2x files converted
to DNG which had been metadata tagged by
    PhotoMechanic (the evil app).
B.T.W. You mention that you had been using Bridge.
Are you getting any of the embedded XMP metadata
coming into Aperture during the import process?
Already tried that multiple times...no luck. I'm wondering though if it might be related to metadata as you suggest. I'm still trying different things to see what happens.
I was able to alleviate the problem on one set of images by painstakingly searching my external drive for the oldest backups I could find - CR2 files from before DNG conversion. I then ran those through DNG Converter and tried importing them again (this time, I embedded NO thumbnail, but I'm not sure if that made the difference - I think it was more likely a fluke in the original conversion that caused the problem). This time, it worked.
Now, the big problem is that I still have a couple hundred images for which I can't seem to locate the original CR2 files. I don't typically keep them after conversion, as I don't have the space for both.

  • Google images shows 2,400,000 image results but only displays 3,000- NOT a preference issue- why/how to fix

When accessing image searches, such as "typographic resume" I get an insanely large result such as 2,470,000 images. However, after about 3,000 results they stop showing without a notification that similar results have been removed. I have my preferences set as high as they go- it is not an issue. How can I adjust/fix this to show ALL results as I approach them, or the option to load more.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello twdockery,
Thanks for contacting Mozilla Support. I think what Chandan_Baba was trying to say is our browser only displays the results that Google gives us. There are no settings in the browser that would limit the amount of search results that you can see.
I would recommend posting your question to google's support. They have a page [https://support.google.com/websearch/troubleshooter/3425345?&ref_topic=3285072#ts=3502652 here] to report issues with Image searches.

  • Aperture 2.1.4 shows landscape JPEGs as "Unsupported Image Format"

I have just imported a few JPEGs from a Boots scan of some 35mm film I had processed there.  All 7 portrait aspect photos are fine, but all 8 landscape format images come up as "Unsupported Image Format" on the maroon screen of death.  The original scans from the lab are all landscape, and I viewed them all in Preview and rotated and saved the portrait images therein.  I then imported them into aperture and adjusted the date and time metadata (as they show the scan date).
Now, the landscape pictures come up as thumbnails in browser, and show fine for a second whilst "loading" in viewer, then disappear leaving the maroon screen.  I can view the pictures fine in iPhoto 09 through "show aperture library", and the exported original through iPhoto shows up just fine everywhere.  I cannot export versions from aperture, and "export master" exports something to the desktop that I cannot open in preview.  The metadata for the landscape and the portrait pictures are identical (740 KB, camera comes up as "SP-2000") except the pixel size dimensions (1840 × 1232) are naturally inverted.
    Any ideas anyone?

Thanks. The short answer is No. The best situation is from the most recently reinstalled version of Aperture where the result is as described in my previous post. Older versions all seem to be corrupted in the way I described.
A longer answer involves another problem I had. I add geo metadata (probably the wrong term!) to my photos so that, when imported to a mapping program, they show where they were taken. Then, when I put those photos on my iPhone, the mapping feature (Places) also showed where the photos were taken. But then, without warning, all this data was lost from the phone and the mapping feature no longer worked, although it continued to work on the computer. I asked the Genius people at an Apple store about this, but they had no idea and could not help. Now, in respect of the photos restored in Aperture where the 'Unsupported Image Format' message no longer appears, the feature has started working again on my phone.

  • Unsupported image format bug

    Hello
I'm using Aperture 3.4.5 on an iMac, 10.8.4, etc, and importing images from a Canon T3i -- usually but not always RAW. Until this week it worked like a charm.
Now, each project I import causes the images to be labeled "unsupported image format" with a black field and white triangle with an exclamation point. If I go to light table view the previews look fine, but as soon as I click to bring up an image it's corrupted.
The Canon DPP utility CAN see the images, as can Photoshop CS6. Older images (same camera, etc) prior to the last couple of imports are fine. So the images aren't corrupted, Aperture is having a problem.
I've repaired permissions within Aperture and by using Disk Utility. I've repaired the library and then rebuilt it. Each time the problem comes back.
My iMac has all software updates applied; I don't think I've had a Canon update for RAW formats, and the T3i has been around quite a while.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Bang! You got it!
And an apology to leonif DF -- of course when I said I had not installed anything recently, I didn't even think about Apple updates pushed to me. Cheez, I'm a dummy.
    So here's what worked:
    1 -- navigated to /System/Library/CoreServices
    2 -- trashed RawCamera.bundle and RawCameraSupport.bundle
    3 -- restart
    4 -- downloaded RAWCameraUpdate4.07 from Apple
    5 -- installed that
    6 -- launched Aperture
7 -- opened the Project that had a problem
    Success!
The munged images in Aperture are now vvvvery interesting.
If I manipulated them before and got the black box with triangle, they STILL have that displayed. BUT if I duplicate them, the duplicate is fine and can be manipulated without fear.
If I did NOT manipulate them before, they are fine now.
By the way, the munged images could be opened and viewed properly by Photoshop CS6, Preview, etc, and displayed their thumbnails properly in Finder when I navigated to my Aperture library.
Thank you both for your help!
One more question: how might I report this (politely, of course) to Apple? Seems like the RAW 4.08 has an issue.

  • Unsupported image format after moving from one project to another

I scanned several thousands of images to my Aperture library. Went thru all of them providing adjustments to many of them, keywords to all of them and adjust date/time to all of them. All of the pics were visible, format is jpeg.
This is a managed library (all pics within Aperture db).
This morning started to restructure the project files (had three of them). After moving couple of hundred images to newly created project file I started seeing "unsupported image format" red screen after clicking the jpeg. 20-30% of the pictures clicked showed on viewer "unsupported image format".
Tried regenerating the previews. Tried command-option start with first fix the preferences option. Then with rebuild option.
Tried moving the pictures back to their original project file.
No joy... Still 20-30% of the pictures show the "unsupported image format".
    Aperture 2.1.
Amy other tricks I could try?
Reported this to Apple aperture feedback of course.

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
+Note: there is no importing involved+
The thumbs appear, but the images are added 2 or 3 times each and the events are all messed up.
This happens when you import one Library to another, which you've done by drag and drop:
Creating a black library and over writing the new with the old.
Your problem is arising because of the Network Share. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • Unsupported Image Format for DNG from GF1?

I am in the process of trying to switch from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3 (in case you are wondering why the main reason is increasing integration between iOS and Aperture).
Most of the images in my Lightroom catalog are from Nikon DSLRs which when I import as DNGs from Lightroom into Aperture show up just fine. However, all of the old DNGs I try to import from Lightroom as DNGs that were shot with my Panasonic GF1 don't render in Aperture and just show up as "Unsupported Image Format."
Please note that new GF1 images I import from the SD card of my GF1 import just fine. The problem seems limited to GF1 images saved in Lightroom as DNGs that I am importing into Aperture.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct this issue?
    Thank you.

Solved it. Had nothing to do with Photoshop PS4 install, it had to do with moving my home space to a larger external drive. One of the "import" setting changed (I don't remember changing it) such that the images weren't getting imported into Aperture. (Re-?)checked that, and all is well. Will go for the PS4-reinstall tomorrow.

  • 'Unsupported Image Format' after migrating project

I finally when to an Apple store and purchased version 2.
But I have a major issue with one project I just migrated to RAW 2.0.
Lots of the images are now saying 'Unsupported Image Format', these images are from the same Nikon D80 camera using the same RAW settings that I have used for sometime. I have also successfully migrated other projects already with no problems.
This is very strange as Aperture reprocessed all the thumbnail images just fine.

Ernie, I misread your post indeed. I never saw a option to send RAW files to an external editor. All I can see is the option to chose what editor and then specify if PSD or TIFF is used. I always use PSD, usually 16bit and in one other installation in 8bit (due to RAM restrictions there).
So Aperture creates the PSD version and PS edits that very version and saves it back into aperture. This is where I sometimes () get that "unsupported image" problem.
I think this also is what Mike does: select a RAW master, use an external editor -> Aperture creates a PSD or TIFF. I haven't tried the TIFF option , though.
My main point was: it all worked for a very long time and with the latest updates it is broken.
    have a good day.

  • Aperture 2+D5100+.NEF(RAW)/JPG=Unsupported Image Format

First off, I am new to all this...
But anyway....Last night, for the first time, I imported images directly from my Nikon D5100 memory card onto Aperture 2.  (Yes, I know there is an Aperture 3.  I am just trying this one until it is something I decide I want to put the money in to...then I will get Aperture 3.)   It appeared as though everything was going well because I could see the thumbnails/ previews along the bottom in my browser.  So, I went ahead and deleted the images from my memory card.  Then, when I clicked on an image to edit it in the viewer, I got a red screen with white writing that says "Unsupported Image Format."  Boo!  Is there ANYTHING I can do to recover my images?  And secondly, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?
A few suggestions from looking around online that I have tried:
***Opening Aperture while holding down Opt+Command and then selecting: "Rebuild Now" and also the "Consistency Check" buttons.
***Opening: Finder- Library- Preferences- and then deleting com.apple.aperture.plist
The only change from doing all that is  now my thumbnails don't appear- instead it just appears as though they are loading...
Again, working with Aperture 2, camera is a Nikon D5100, image format is both RAW (.NEF) /JPEG, (only the RAW file is showing up) and "Unsupported Image Format" message appears when I click on image and try to edit in the viewer.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

  • Adjustment yeilds unsupported image format

A2: Made straighten and spotting adjustments on several images and works fine. Then (I think) I was doing same in full screen mode, and when I finished, I get a reddish block instead of image and it says unsupported image format. Actually, when I scroll to these two pics, it first shows the pic, then the reddish block and error.
Any ideas? I tried rebuilding preview. Didn't help.

New Aperture user (I waited until 2.0 to buy it, never had the demo version) and I too am getting the red boxes.
I am starting with existing TIFF files on hard disk.
I have a project with a bunch of 35mm slide scans (about 5300x3500 pixels, 32MB each) that I have set up as referenced images. I rarely if ever get the Unsupported Image Format red box of doom when working with those, even after all manner of adjustments.
I have a project with a bunch of medium format (645) slide scans (about 15000x11000 pixels, 200MB each) that I have set up as managed images. I basically can't work on those at all because of this problem. Sometimes I can do a little work to one image and then when I go to the next, they all start showing up as red boxes. Quitting and restarting aperture fixes it for one image's worth of work again, then red doom.
I set up a test project and brought in 27 of those medium format images as referenced - same thing. So it wouldn't not appear to be a referenced vs managed thing. More likely it's their gargantuan size. Aperture is pathetically slow in bringing the first one up and redrawing the preview after an adjustment, sometimes it even hangs or crashes. The slowness I'm not that worried about, even PS gags on them a bit, they're just too huge. But it would be nice to work on them more than one at a go.
3.0GHz dual-dual-core Mac Pro, 6GB of RAM, Quadro FX 4500 graphics card, piles of excess disk space everywhere, all internal disks... I sure hope that's enough hardware for Aperture!

if you keep the console open when you're editing these photos and the "unsupported image format" message comes up, you'll notice that Aperture is throwing malloc errors on the console. this means that while its trying to load the image, it is running out of RAM. the core problem here is that Aperture can't address more than 2GB of RAM and i think the only way that Apple can address this problem is by moving to a 64-bit version of Aperture. it would be really nice if this issue was addressed in a 2.2 release sometime soon as this happens to me all the time now after round-tripping an image to Photoshop.
i would not expect to have to quit and restart a professional photography application every time i finish editing an image.
Good to know. But I don't expect a .2 upgrade to be 64bits, a next major version of Aperture is more likely to be 64bits (Aperture 3), considering AP 2 is at the end of its development cycle and a new major release is due before summer.

  • Unsupported file format just popped up

I have been working with Aperture and my fuji camera for over a year shooting JPEGS. All of a sudden the thumbs load but in the main screen I get an unsupported image image format. When i click on a thumb the unsupported error flashes the image but returns to unsupported image format. The odd thing is the images work fine on another computer loaded with another copy of Aperture. I was thinking of trashing the preferences but thought I wuld bounce this out there first!

    a couple things/thoughts ...
1 - open the library package and copy out the suspect project ... open aperture delete suspect project and reimport the copied ...
2 - open library and copy out just the images ... delete images and reimport ...
btw - did you reboot your computer ??? that should be first step in ANY troubleshooting ...
