Strange burn folder behaviour; lost files, sort of...

I was trying to back up several folders from iTunes onto a DVD. I did this earlier today, and it worked fine. When I tried it again, by highlighting 5 folders and dragging them to a second burn folder, the following happened:
1. The folders did not appear in the burn folder (but they DID disappear from the original folder containing them, which should NOT happen!).
2. When I double click on the burn folder in the finder, the burn folder and all 5 of the subfolders that are supposed to be in the burn folder open simultaneously in 6 different windows in the finder.
3. Using a terminal window, the 5 folders are missing from the iTunes directory.
4. When I run iTunes (or use SpotLight), the folders are shown in the normal place, and everything seems OK. But, if I look for the files using "find" in a terminal window, I don't see them.
5. These folders are not easily replaceable--I'm reluctant to shutdown my machine--I'm not sure whether the files will still be accessible to iTunes after a reboot!
Any advice on what to do would be appreciated!
Thanks,

#1- Burn folders are created if you insert a blank CD/DVD except when responding to a pre-initiated burn request (like pressing the burn button in iTunes)
#2- They may be "anchors" (don't know what else to call them) for streaming media files. If you clicked on a streaming video link, it is likely that those files-usually about 4KB were downloaded at that time, normally they are removed once the stream is played. If they're not, delete them yourself.

  • Burn Folder and Burning CDs

    I know that if I insert a CD I can copy files from my HD and paste them into the CD and then burn the CD.
    But, I also want to take advantage of burn folders. If I make a burn folder and drag files from the HD into the burn folder I only get the aliases (I've heard this is what you do- simply drag and drop). What I want to know is if I go ahead and burn the folder will it burn the aliases or a copy of the original file. OR, do I have to do the same as with a CD i.e. make a copy and paste it into the burn folder. Thanks.

    Furthermore, if you get info on the burn folder it only will give the size of the aliases. Does anyone know how to find the actually size of all the contained files?

    The are 2 accounts on my computer: mine and my wife's. I want to create a single Burn Folder with important files from both accounts. How do I do that? Thanks,

    Tri-Backup, (30-day Free Trial), can get you around all of this, for one thing it'll allow you to break it up into custom size chunks to span several CDs or DVDs, then Burn those...

  • How do I remove a few files from a burn folder?

    I cannot believe I have to ask such a simple question; WHY is everyhting so difficult and complicated with Macs?! I have a DVD in the Mac; I put a number of files into the 'burn folder' which appears automatically. It tells me there are too many files to burn (I have no way of calculating the exact amount to fill the DVD, so have to use trial & error).
    On a Windows PC there would be a little button saying 'remove'; you simply highlight a few folders at a time & click 'remove' - & bingo - they vanish from the folder to be burned. But it seems I have to actually send these 'alias' files to the trash in order to get them out of the burn folder? I saw another discussion on here that suggests this will delete the original files? HOW stupid and badly designed is that?!! I tried sending some to the trash but this takes forever; it does not seem to have deleted the originals, but I would like someone to confirm this please - and please can someone tell me how to delete the contents / some of the contents of a burn folder if I've made a simple mistake in what I've added to it? There HAS to be some way of getting rid of files without deleting the originals - surely?!

    Pardon me for jumping in, but in my experience deleting an alias from a burn folder (or elsewhere) leaves the original intact.  I don't know why deleting the alias files takes so long on your system - on mine, a mid-2011 mini with 8GB RAM running 10.7.5, it happens pretty immediately.  I didn't initially like the Burn Folder concept, but since I've gotten used to it, it's OK - although it seems to add some unnecesary complexity if I want, for example, to move some (but not all) of the files in a folder onto a CD/DVD.
    To delete aliases of files that I don't want burned, I (right-click) (control-click) (two finger tap) on the alias, then select "Move to Trash".  That's not the only way it can be done, of course.
    As baltwo used it, I think "WAG" is supposed to indicate a sort of guess.  A "burning maven" would be a person with extensive knowledge of burning CDs and DVDs on a Mac.  Since none have weighed in, there must be some sort of maven convention going on.
    But, yes, what you've described should work fine.  If you're super concerned about files being deleted when you delete an alias to them and don't have an up-to-date backup, just make a copy of the file (not the alias) in a different folder.
    Good luck

  • Burned DVD to folder but no files were created

    (Windows 7 64-bit) I completed a project and attempted to burn a disc (DVD) to folder.  All appeared normal during the compilation, etc, took a normal 15 minutes or so, Premiere Elements said it was done, but there were no files in the designated folder.  Quit & re-started Premiere Elements & tried again, same result.  Looked back through the 12 discs I've created recently & discovered one of those also empty.  Haven't re-installed Premiere Elements yet, that will be my next step.  Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone have suggestions for trouble-shooting?

    I deleted the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file, which didn't help.  Then, deleted the entire 12.0 folder, again didn't help.  In the process, I noted something that seems strange; perhaps a byproduct of having deleted the entire folder.  Under C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Roaming\Adobe are a Premiere Elements folder and a Premiere Elements 12.0 folder.  Both have sub-folders named 12.0.  The Premiere Elements 12.0\12.0 folder contains only a folder named "logs", which is dated today but is empty, and a "Trace Database.txt" file.  The Premiere Elements\12.0 folder contains subfolders "Layouts, logs, OLS, SC", and 14 files of several types, include the new Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that was presumably (re)generated after my deletion of the predecessor on my last attempt to burn to a folder.
    Some answers to some of your previous questions:
    1.  My Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files folder contains 26 files totalling 17.8 GB (this on a disk with 902 GB free space)
    2.  The specific DVD folder under Previews that I'm having trouble with is empty, but so are about half the other 12 folders that all (except one) seem to have worked.  I get the impression that these Previews are created only when I deliberately force a manual rendering, which I don't always do.
    3.  My Media Cache Files folder contains 236 files totalling 774 MB (on the same drive with 902 GB free).
    4.  The Edit\Preferences\Media dialog is pointed to another folder on that same 902 GB-free drive & I think the settings are all Adobe default: 5.00 GB Cache size, all boxes checked.  The resulting Media Cache folder contains 132 files at 97.7 kB, the Thumbnail Cache folder has 1 file of 31.4 MB.
    5.  I don't know what you mean by "pile-ups"; please explain.
    6.  Under Libraries\Documents I don't have an Adobe folder; just three locked out from me (My Music, My Pictures, My Video) & two others that wouldn't appear to be related to Premiere.  Another level down under Libraries\Documents is Desktop which does have an Adobe Premiere Elements 12 folder, under that PRE 12 and ReadMe folders.  In the PRE 12 folder are 6 folders & 59 files.  The files are all dated 9/24/2013 & the folders yesterday; I'm guessing that this stuff all is related to yesterday's (re)installation.
    Any further ideas will be gratefully accepted.  In the meantime, I think I'll start a new project & see if it burns a disc.  The presently-troublesome one was started several weeks ago, then set aside while I did other stuff, & when I came back I went through a "workflow learning curve" again (at my age, this happens) & may have screwed something up that Premiere can't deal with.

    Thanks for your reply:
    I did find an error log related to the error code and tried all suggestions on the list of recommendations, still no luck
    I definitely am running OS X10.5.8 (hopefully will be updating later on this month)
    I tried several brand new discs from the same box, still no luck.
    My last option is to go out and try a different brand, guess I'll go with Verbatim this time but I think I'll poke around some more before buying 20 more new discs.

  • Develop settings lost after re-importing folder of DNG files

    I've been using LR for several months, and - after getting accustomed to its peculiararities - love the program.
    This evening I re-imported a folder of DNG files that I had previously removed from LR - using the "add" import option. When going to the Develop module, I noticed that my original develop settings were no longer applied.
    Aren't these settings incorporated into the DNG files? How could they get lost? Are they over-written when re-importing the files?
    I always backup my catalog before closing. Does the catalog backup contain the original develop settings for these DNG files?
    I know I must have done something wrong! Please advise & explain. Thanks.

    Thanks. I do have autowrite to XMP checked. - I learned that lesson a few months ago!
    I will see if I can use an older backup to recover the settings. I have never done that before, but I know where my catalog backups are located. If you can give some advice on that, I would appreciate it. I don't want to lose other DNG edits in the process.
    Correct me if I'm wrong - but it appears that if I ever do want to remove a previously imported folder from LR for whatever reason - I should just edit the RAW files without converting to DNG. I know DNGs are more compact, but at least the sidecar files associated with the RAW files will always be there! This is more important to me than conserving disk space!
    just try it on one or tow files to test. Also look at "Read Metadata from file" in the current catalog first with ine file to see if that helps. Did you have a Prest applied when importing like Zeroed?...... None is the best for importing files with dev settings already applied.
    I use DNG exclusively and haven't experienced your issue so review your import settings as mentioned.

  • Accesing file details of a burn folder

    Hi,
    I would like to know if there is any particular function in cocoa or in c which can give me the original path of all the alias files inside a burn directory?
    For example, if i have 2 files in a burn directory say aa.txt and bb.txt which are alias pointing to /Users/Shared/aa.txt and /Users/Shared/bb.txt, how do I get the path /Users/Shared/aa.txt from the burn folder? I tried using readlink but it doesnt seem to work for burn folders. Any help?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply. Isnt there a way to convert the alias in a burn folder to symbolic links using the automator?
    of course, it's possible using automator or applescript. I now recall we discussed it with you before in an earlier thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10775299#10775299
    perhaps red_menace will see this thread and jump in. he might suggest a better approach but the above script can be modified to replace the alias in question by a symbolic link
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "Finder"
    set the_alias to (choose file) --- choose an alias in a burn folder
    set orig_path to quoted form of POSIX path of (original item of the_alias as alias) --unix path of the original item
    set alias_path to quoted form of (POSIX path of the_alias) --unix path of the alias in the burn folder
    do shell script " rm " & alias_path -- delete the current alias in the burn folder
    do shell script "ln -s " & orig_path & " " & alias_path --replace the alias by a symbolic link
    end tell</pre>
    you can easily modify it to put inside an automator workflow using "run applescript action" if that's what you want to do.
    I am trying to get into the develop forum but for some reason it doesn't log me in.
    doesn't log you in?? you are already logged in as you are posting here.

  • Lost files by overwriting folder

    Help PLEASE!
    I made a stupid mistake and tried to back up a folder with some images by copying my Pictures folder from the PowerBook to an external firewire hard drive. I had a Picture folder there already with some subfolders. Unfortunately the folder structure on the ext drive had some folders which I had created there earlier but are not in the Pictures folder on the PowerBook. Too late I realised that by copying the newer Pictures folder over the one on the ext drive I deleted the subfolders that do not exist anymore on the PowerBook.
    I am now hoping that some of the files in those subfolders still exist in some form and I will be able to recover them. I don't know how though. I would be very grateful for any help I could get with this...please!!
    Many thanks!

    Hi, K. Download the demo version of one or more of the following data recovery utilities:
    Data Rescue II
    FileSalvage
    VirtualLab
    The demo version of each program will show you what files the full, paid-for version would be able to recover from your hard drive. If you like what you see, buy and use the full version.
    Any of these programs will require that you have a second hard drive to which the recovered files can be saved as you recover them. In your case, that can be your internal HD, provided there's enough room on it. You'll want to install the data recovery software on the internal HD, boot to that drive, and use the recovery software to inspect the external drive for recoverable files. Any files you decide you want to recover will be saved on the internal drive, to avoid overwriting anything more on the external drive.
    To be recoverable, the "lost" files on the external drive must not actually have been overwritten. If the new Pictures folder actually occupies the same addresses on the external drive as the old Pictures folder did, then the files have literally been overwritten and are gone forever. But that may not be the case: if the new folder was written to a different part of the drive, and only the directory entry for the old folder has been removed, the files may be recoverable. There's no way for you to tell where on the drive the files were written except by trying to recover them.
    Be aware that everything that has been or will be written to the drive after the Pictures folder was replaced has the potential to overwrite files that you may want to recover. So it's very important that you STOP using the external drive at all until you've recovered whatever you need from it, or determined that your files aren't recoverable.
    Good luck.

  • Dups, sharing problems and lost files on NAS drive

    I have been trying ot set up a "shared library" on a network storage drive.  The process has been painful to say the least I have over 17k music files and 400+ audio books.
    My first problem was creating duplicate files when pointing a new PC to iTunes media files. After trying multiple 3rd party software product unsucessfullly I finally bite the bullet and used the iTunes feature display duplicates feature.  Because I did not want to delete compliations and greatest hits dups I had to browse dups by album and manally sort through over 7,000 songs. Took me a week to complet but I did it. The larger problem I am now facing is lost files.
    I sucessfully had both compurter pointed to the same media folder and everything was working great until I accidentally selected all of my file (yes 17,000+) and proceeded to delete them. I was trying to deleted all of the songs in a album that was duplicates... I caught my error only after a few secs but I am afraid the damage is done. The weird part is the songs are still in the library in iTunes but I now have close to 5,000 missing files icons and when I look for the files in the album folder, they are missing.  What is more irritating is not every song from every album is missing. so If I reimport from the original cd (I hope they are not too scratched) it creates dups of the file that are already there and I have go through and do a manual dup clean up again!!!
    Anyone have a thought as to where the missing files are (they are not in the trash under deleted files).
    Anyone know of a better way to share a large library between mutliple computers and iOS devices without haveing to have multiple copies to sync(i.e. Home sharing).
    ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

    Hi Rajnish,
    As you mentioned "quota limit", it is set via FSRM or specific function on NAS?
    Meanwhile could you confirm the number 185GB is accurate? Sometimes a part of used space is just not calculated. You can confirm with checking the total space on NAS locally.
    If the number is correct and quota is set via FSRM, check if it is the Disk Quota which not re-calculated the released space. Try to clear the Quota setting and reconfig with 300GB limitation and see if issue still exists.
