Strange Character Showing on my PowerPC G4

Hello!
After a re-start of my laptop, I discovered that all the fonts from option menu had been replaced by a lot of 'A', and such strange character is consisted of a capital 'A' within a square/box, it looks exactly like the letter 'A' fall out from a keyboard.
Please help and thanks!
George

Hi hardhousedj, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It's a damaged system font...
Your problem has been reported several times and seems to represent breakdown in the OS's ability to use the basic system fonts. The A is a symbol from Apple's Last Resort font indicating that the desired character is not present on the system. The only know cure as far as I know is a reinstall of the OS.
First, "Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Strange Character in Essbase Report

I generated an Essbase report using report script. I have suppressed colum heading, page heading, zero rows and missing rows. In the generated report there is a strange character at the beginning of every 65th row (). When opened in notepad it looks like the biology female symbol. I am guessing this is some kind of a page break character. It shows up in any application I use to open the .rpt file.Is there any way to supress this character?
I will be sending the resulting report to SAP. Will this character effect the way SAP will read member names in that row?

Never mind. Foud out that SUPFEED works fine. The question about page break character affecting SAP is still open though.

  • Hindi Langauge has some strange character in zsca/installed_language=H

    Dear Experts,
I have imported HINDI language and run the I18n for getting the values of the paramter zsca*, but it shows some strange character in it. And copied/paste the same thing in instance profile, but nothing works?
Any idea how to get resolved.
    Regards

    What do you see?
    > And copied/paste the same thing in instance profile, but nothing works?
Well - with that problem description it's impossible to help you.
    What release are you running?
How did you import the language?
What are those "strange charaters" you seee?

  • Mail on iCloud Mail creates strange character strings

    Hi,
once in a while iCloud Mail creates  strange character Strangs (like:
ich gr=C3=BCnes Licht geben bzw Entscheidungen =C3=BCber durchzuf=C3=BChr=
ende Arbeiten treffen.=0AKl=C3=A4rungsbed=C3=BCrftig ist noch, ob die vorl=

Obviously when using mutatet wovels  ("german umlauts")
Any explanation and suggestion to avoid it.
Work on Macbook Pro OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Thanks for support: Lutz

    Hello,
Indeed but native Mail app is configured automatically when setting Mail in iCloud settings. At the end, iCloud account has a specific icon in Mail app.
Try what I described and you'll see that this iCloud account is transformed into a standard IMAP account.

  • Strange character at the end of some file/folder names

I'm getting a strange character at the end of some of my file and folder names. This is it:  When I enlarge it, it says "private use" on the top and bottom, "E000" on the left side, and "F8FF" on the right side. It acts like a character within the font, but I'm not sure why it's there.
In case that didn't work, I'm going to try to attach or embed a gif of the character. I'm not sure if it will work or not.
Also, some longer file names seem to be dleeting some of the letters and are inserting a pound sign and a few numbers (e.g. #34) in place of the letters.
    What's going on?
    As usual, thanks in advance,
    Lloyd

I thought that might be it...at first. Then I found some file names that were nowhere near 32 characters long whose names were truncated.
It's not a huge problem, except in QuarkXPress when I collect the files for output and I have to reconnect to the ones whose names have been changed (to protect the innocent, I suppose).
    Thanks for the input mark.

  • Strange computers showing up under shared...

I'm asking this question for a friend of mine that just bought a mac mini. I can't explain this and was hoping someone here could.
He has his mac mini connected wirelessly to his linksys router using WPA. Everything should be pretty secure. But in the finder on his mac mini, he has some strange computers showing up that are not on his network. If he tries to click on them, they disappear immediately, but will come back later.
He has a couple of other PC's on his network but neither of them can see these mystery machines. Only the mac mini can.
Also, he lives kinda out in the country... Not too many neighbors and definitely not in close quarters.
Any idea what this could be? Things to check?? Thanks in advance.

Does he also see the PC's, in finder that is. I also live in the country and i will see PC's in my network that arent even turned on, so its hard to explain.
I also have a few cantenna's hooked up and i also will see a few of my neighbors PC's

  • A stranger is showing up under "Shared" in my network

A stranger is showing up under "Shared" in my network. "Frank's Macbook Pro."  I don't know anyone named Frank and my internet connection (comcast) is secured.  I looked under "preferences/sharing" and didn't find a way to "Frank's Macbook Pro" from showing up. Advice? I'm a newbie. Please explain simply. Amy

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

  • Strange character in facebook in Chrome. After messing with Helevetica neue

    Hi everyone,
I have this strange character in facebook in chrome.
First of all, before this problem arise, I was messing around with helvetica neue font to display properly in google chrome, and also I deleted many international fonts using monolingual program.
What is seems the problem? How do I get it back to normal.
    thanks.

Those are characters from Apple's Last Resort Font.  It indicates you have deleted stuff you should have left there.  I recommend you not use Monolingual and similar apps.  The risk of serious damage to your OS is not worth any possible benefit.

  • Strange character issue in textfields

I've created a form in Livecycle Designer ES2 for a government company.
The form contains several pages with text fields, radio buttons and check boxes.
Also javascripts to enhance the form.
I've used their company font for static text and Verdana for the textfields.
My customer uses Windows XP (SP3) and Adobe Reader 10.1.x on all of their computers.
When they open the form and start typing text in the formfields something strange happens.
It looks like that if the first key they hit on the keyboard, directly after opening the form, acts strange in the entire form.
    For example:
If the hit a letter "a" as the first key, after opening the form.
The letter "a" will be followed with one or several spaces through the entire form.
Also some letters shows on top of each other.
I've tested the form on several other Windows XP computers with Reader 10.1.x and the problem didn't show.
The test where made on different locations and companies.
The problem only seems to exist on all of the computers of my customer.
Is there a known problem dat looks like this?
Maybe a third application is cousing this problem, but i don't know what it can be.
    Anyone seen this behaviour before??
I recently upgraded to ES4 and exported the form using ES4, but the error seems to stay.

    Hi Kavipriya,
    Thanks for quick reply.

I am not getting any issue..
but in place of special character , it shows some squar box symbol.. remaining ok..
and remaining special characters are working fine..

    CM&U Enertrag Randow-Höhe (8) SDL
    CM&U Prützke 1-4  SDL  I & II

  • Acrobat 7 Standard making strange character substitutions

Yes, we're still using Acrobat 7.
Acrobat has always been unable to handle some fonts (particularly decorative fonts such as cursive fonts) but until recently it has handled most common fonts reasonably well.
Today I created a document in MS Word and created a pdf file from it by using the "Adobe PDF" printer driver selection -- as usual.
And, of course, Acrobat created the PDF file, as it always has....
BUT today Acrobat is changing some of the characters within one font.
Acrobat is changing ordinary zero characters to a slashed zero character (which doesn't even exist in this font)
Acrobat is changing ordinary apostrophe characters into some strange large capital O with a tilde over it. Interestingly enough, Acrobat is inserting this enormous character but only leaving the amount of space normally occupied by the regular apostrophe, so that the s after the apostrophe is coming out inside the middle of the O character.
And Acrobat is changing the degree symbol character to a 1/4 fraction character.
Interestingly enough Acrobat makes these substitutions only in one specific font within the document. Parts of the text that are in a different font or even in the same font but in BOLD are not having the problem.
The font where Acrobat makes these strange substitutions is Windows' own Arial font -- specifically 11 point Arial regular -- it doesn't make these strange substitutions in text written in 11 point Arial Bold or in Times New Roman

This is an issue with fonts not being embedded in a PDF and with 4 fonts that are listed by Acrobat. I have the link to the knowledge base on another computer, but you can search for it. The solution is to remove 4 fonts as I recall. Then the font substitution works correctly. The problem is finding the problem fonts in the knowledge base.

  • Strange characters showing up in Essbase Server pick list

I have one user, that is logging into her Essbase spreadsheet addin and seeing all kinds of strange characters following each server name in the Server drop down list within the Essbase System Login window.  Any ideas what would cause this?
What we have found is the Server names and strange characters are showing up in the registry key: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Hyperion Solutions\Essbase\Login".  Normally you would see something like this in this key:
    (Default)    Reg_SZ    (Value not set)
    Server        Reg_SZ    ServerName1
    Server1      Reg_SZ    ServerName2
    Server2      Reg_SZ    ServerName3
    etc.
What is showing now, is the original list of servers, with 10 or so new ones that repeat the server names that were already there followed by strange characters.  There were 10 extra entries in this particular persons drop down list.  We deleted them from the Registry and she was good for a few minutes and then they came back!!  Anybody seen this before?  We are running 11.1.2.1 of the Oracle Essbase Spreadsheet Add-in.  Excel 2010.  Windows 7.  She is also using the In2HypEssbase ribbon, but so are many others, and she is the only one experiencing this problem.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Sorry, I forgot to mention that we did delete them from the registry and they did disappear from the drop down list.  But a little while later it happened again!  They seem to keep coming back and we don't know why.  Again, she is the only person in the company that has had this issue.  I have had her shutdown everything and reboot her pc with no luck as well, just to make sure there wasn't something quirky going on in the memory of the pc.

  • "#" character showing up when saving as PDF in FM 8?

    Hello,
We've used FM for years, for operator and service manuals - we just upgraded to FM8, and have a new problem. When we save as a PDF, we get the # character at random points in the PDF - there is no rhyme or reason for their appearance or their location.
We've applied both FM patches, we've tried different fonts and different PDF profiles, and nothing works. It sounds similar to the problem that was being had with the question marks showing up randomly, but unfortunately the latest patch didn't work. Any ideas?
If you'd like to see the original FM file and the PDF file that has the "added" characters, please email me at [email protected] and I will send to you.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts...

Further to my original post, further info as follows:
Platform: Windows XP, SP2 both PCs that this happens on are fully functional for Graphics we run CS3 Master Suite, Corel, Quark, etc.
Weve applied the patches, through the Adobe Updater (the download link doesnt work) version is 8.0p273
We used the File - Save As PDF option saving as either a High Quality or X1a PDF (but weve tried all types, to rectify the problem it persists with all options).
    Thanks again for any help!

  • Strange things showing up in navigation addresses and say they are from an ex. How is this possible?

strange things keep showing up in navigation( short notes from ex) and instead of current location it has his name. How is this possible?

Did you check your trash? If you dont empty it it will fill up and cause your HD to fill up even though you think you have removed some stuff.
You should get a small program called "whatsize". Do a google and download it.
Running it will show you what is filling up your HD and I believe that you can remove files with whatsize.
    good luck,
    frank

  • Strange Computers Showing in Finder under "Shared"

Strange devices "ludwig" and "Walter-IBM" keep appearing in Finder. I use a password protected network. Cannot connect to the devices. Why are these showing up in my shared devices list? How do I ensure these computers are not connecting to my network?

How do I ensure these computers are not connecting to my network?
If these are not computers that are supposed to appear on your network, then it's possible that they have cracked your network somehow in order to use it for free. If you're using a WEP encrypted network, note that it can be cracked in under a minute at this point. You should switch to WPA, and make sure you use a decent password.
Of course, it's far more likely that these are devices of some kind that are supposed to be on your network. For example, if you have a hard drive connected to your wireless router, that will show up in your Shared list.
