Strange character

http://www.math.fsu.edu/~trogers/pics/LHJ/How%20America%20Lives.html
as you can see this 'lone' character (top left, below-left of "Ladies" heading) appears in the "view code" --but is not actually in the code.
also note that (perhaps irrelevant) that the text on the problematic labels is "lighter".
it seems to me that if this is a server problem then why is the character not elsewhere where the code is similar?
(the pref for use smart quotes is unchecked)
thanks

1) i didnt see that "no-break space" in the code.
When viewed in the correct encoding, it's a space and thus hard to see.
are you saying it's there and all i need do is
remove it?
Yes.
i.e., its there in the form of
"U+00A0"?
No. If you open your source with TextEdit set to Latin-1, it will appear as  .
2) notwithstanding the above, i may be ready for the
.htaccess file. i did look at the link provided on
your site, but i ask if there are any simple
instructions or even a ready made file (or one i can
edit) to sue for that?
It is a simple text file with two dozen characters in it. The best instructions are those in the note (you can copy/paste the text if you want):
"This is just an ordinary plain text file named .htaccess with the text "AddDefaultCharset UTF-8" or "AddCharset UTF-8 .html" or possibly "AddDefaultCharset Off" (no quotes). This file should be located at the top level of your space on the server, but you may also need to put it inside the public_html folder if there is one. Files with a . before the name are often invisible, so you may need to select "show hidden files" or a similar setting to see them. A good program for making/editing such files is TextWrangler. Just compose the text and use File > Save to FTP Server."

    Hello,
Indeed but native Mail app is configured automatically when setting Mail in iCloud settings. At the end, iCloud account has a specific icon in Mail app.
Try what I described and you'll see that this iCloud account is transformed into a standard IMAP account.

  • Strange character at the end of some file/folder names

I'm getting a strange character at the end of some of my file and folder names. This is it:  When I enlarge it, it says "private use" on the top and bottom, "E000" on the left side, and "F8FF" on the right side. It acts like a character within the font, but I'm not sure why it's there.
In case that didn't work, I'm going to try to attach or embed a gif of the character. I'm not sure if it will work or not.
Also, some longer file names seem to be dleeting some of the letters and are inserting a pound sign and a few numbers (e.g. #34) in place of the letters.
    What's going on?
    As usual, thanks in advance,
    Lloyd

I thought that might be it...at first. Then I found some file names that were nowhere near 32 characters long whose names were truncated.
It's not a huge problem, except in QuarkXPress when I collect the files for output and I have to reconnect to the ones whose names have been changed (to protect the innocent, I suppose).
    Thanks for the input mark.

  • Strange Character in Essbase Report

I generated an Essbase report using report script. I have suppressed colum heading, page heading, zero rows and missing rows. In the generated report there is a strange character at the beginning of every 65th row (). When opened in notepad it looks like the biology female symbol. I am guessing this is some kind of a page break character. It shows up in any application I use to open the .rpt file.Is there any way to supress this character?
I will be sending the resulting report to SAP. Will this character effect the way SAP will read member names in that row?

Never mind. Foud out that SUPFEED works fine. The question about page break character affecting SAP is still open though.

  • Strange character in facebook in Chrome. After messing with Helevetica neue

    Hi everyone,
I have this strange character in facebook in chrome.
First of all, before this problem arise, I was messing around with helvetica neue font to display properly in google chrome, and also I deleted many international fonts using monolingual program.
What is seems the problem? How do I get it back to normal.
    thanks.

Those are characters from Apple's Last Resort Font.  It indicates you have deleted stuff you should have left there.  I recommend you not use Monolingual and similar apps.  The risk of serious damage to your OS is not worth any possible benefit.

Well - with that problem description it's impossible to help you.
    What release are you running?
How did you import the language?
What are those "strange charaters" you seee?

  • Strange Character Showing on my PowerPC G4

    Hello!
After a re-start of my laptop, I discovered that all the fonts from option menu had been replaced by a lot of 'A', and such strange character is consisted of a capital 'A' within a square/box, it looks exactly like the letter 'A' fall out from a keyboard.
    Please help and thanks!
    George

Hi hardhousedj, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    It's a damaged system font...
Your problem has been reported several times and seems to represent breakdown in the OS's ability to use the basic system fonts. The A is a symbol from Apple's Last Resort font indicating that the desired character is not present on the system. The only know cure as far as I know is a reinstall of the OS.
    First, "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Acrobat 7 Standard making strange character substitutions

Yes, we're still using Acrobat 7.
Acrobat has always been unable to handle some fonts (particularly decorative fonts such as cursive fonts) but until recently it has handled most common fonts reasonably well.
Today I created a document in MS Word and created a pdf file from it by using the "Adobe PDF" printer driver selection -- as usual.
And, of course, Acrobat created the PDF file, as it always has....
BUT today Acrobat is changing some of the characters within one font.
Acrobat is changing ordinary zero characters to a slashed zero character (which doesn't even exist in this font)
Acrobat is changing ordinary apostrophe characters into some strange large capital O with a tilde over it. Interestingly enough, Acrobat is inserting this enormous character but only leaving the amount of space normally occupied by the regular apostrophe, so that the s after the apostrophe is coming out inside the middle of the O character.
And Acrobat is changing the degree symbol character to a 1/4 fraction character.
Interestingly enough Acrobat makes these substitutions only in one specific font within the document. Parts of the text that are in a different font or even in the same font but in BOLD are not having the problem.
The font where Acrobat makes these strange substitutions is Windows' own Arial font -- specifically 11 point Arial regular -- it doesn't make these strange substitutions in text written in 11 point Arial Bold or in Times New Roman

This is an issue with fonts not being embedded in a PDF and with 4 fonts that are listed by Acrobat. I have the link to the knowledge base on another computer, but you can search for it. The solution is to remove 4 fonts as I recall. Then the font substitution works correctly. The problem is finding the problem fonts in the knowledge base.

  • Strange character issue in textfields

I've created a form in Livecycle Designer ES2 for a government company.
The form contains several pages with text fields, radio buttons and check boxes.
Also javascripts to enhance the form.
I've used their company font for static text and Verdana for the textfields.
My customer uses Windows XP (SP3) and Adobe Reader 10.1.x on all of their computers.
When they open the form and start typing text in the formfields something strange happens.
It looks like that if the first key they hit on the keyboard, directly after opening the form, acts strange in the entire form.
    For example:
If the hit a letter "a" as the first key, after opening the form.
The letter "a" will be followed with one or several spaces through the entire form.
Also some letters shows on top of each other.
I've tested the form on several other Windows XP computers with Reader 10.1.x and the problem didn't show.
The test where made on different locations and companies.
The problem only seems to exist on all of the computers of my customer.
Is there a known problem dat looks like this?
Maybe a third application is cousing this problem, but i don't know what it can be.
    Anyone seen this behaviour before??
I recently upgraded to ES4 and exported the form using ES4, but the error seems to stay.

  • Strange Character in Menu Bar

My friend called me with a strange problem on his Mac Mini. He said today when he restarted his Mac all this desktop icons and menu bars have been change. Instead of the normal menus such as File, Edit, View etc... He now sees a bunch of "A" with square boxes around them. I had him repair disk permissions, reset PRAM. I also took him into the international system pref to see if his default language and Input menu had been changed away from English/US. Those all checked out as normal. I had him send me a screen shot of what he's seeing. I've posted it here: http://members.cox.net/bdm12071980/icons.jpg

  • Currency format - $ replaced by strange character

Sorry for the duplicate post. I had posted this earlier on the Java Programming forum, but I then I thought this would probably a more appropriate forum for this message.
I have a web application in which I have HTML tables that show some amount values that have been formatted using the following code:
    NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance().format(dataElement);
My development environment is WindowsNT and things work perfectly on it. The problem is that when I move the war file onto the production system (on Sun solaris), the $ sign before the currency amount is replaced by a star shaped character. I am not sure if this is due to the operating system or the font/display settings on the server machine.
Any ideas on resolvinbg this issue would be appreciated.

NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance() returns different formats depending on your default locale. If they are different between the two systems, that suggests that your default locales are different.Locale.getDefault().toString()will tell you what they are.

  • E75 - Strange character when sending e-mail

    Hi,
I have a Nokia e75 that sends strange characters when sending swedish e-mail.
    This was sent:
Jag skickade ingen inbjudan till dej, men kollar så att den är kvar.
    This was recived:
Jag skickade ingen inbjudan till dej,men jag kollar så att den är kvar.
    Whats wrong?
    - For your info this e-mail account is a company e-mail with exchange.
    Thx
    Christoffer

The e-mails that you send from your E75 are already encoded with UTF-8 (at least if they contain non-ASCII characters).
The problem is either being cause by an incorrectly set e-mail server (not likely), or by the e-mail client (or web browser) that you're using to read the message.
I've just tested sending an e-mail from my E75 (using an ovi account with Nokia Messaging) containing various non-ASCII characters (ä, ö, ñ, etc.) two different accounts (one of them was read using Lotus Notes, the other is a webmail account), and both display everything correctly.
If you can, send yourself an e-mail containing swedish letters to an e-mail account where you can view the e-mail in "source" form, and check if you see the following lines in the header:
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
If you don't see exactly that, please look for lines in the header that begin with "Content" and post them here!
It may help also if you post details of how you are reading the e-mail (webmail, and if so, which browser; or an e-mail client, and if so, which; operating system, language of OS, etc.)
    Good luck.
