  • PXI wont boot past BIOS, strange characters displayed (possible HDD failure)

I've just acquired a PXI-1042 with a much older 8186 Controller which does not boot past the BIOS.
Once powered up the sytem recognizes the HDD and available ram and even does a ram check but then it displays some strange characters; what appear to be "AC" and two dos smiley faces.
CMOS battery has been changed and system time has been updated as well. HDD is recognized in bios and is selected as the boot priority.
This could be a bad HDD since I know nothing of functionality of this PXI, other than its "hardly been used".
Just figure I'd ask around before going through the trouble of purchasing a new drive through IT.
    See attachment for screenshot.

It's possible the drive is fine, but just does not have an operating system installed.  If this PXI-8186 controller originally shipped with Windows, it may have an OS recovery partition.  This KnowledgeBase article is a good reference:  Hard Drive Recovery and OS Installation.
If you want to check the integrity of the drive itself, here is another relevant KnowledgeBase article: Hard Disk Drive Diagnostic Tool for PXI and PXIe Embedded Controllers.

  • Strange characters displaying in place of file upload

Has this happened to anyone before?
I've built a form that includes a file upload option, but where the field box and button should be there are funny characters displaying (see screenshot) - Clicking on the characters behaves as it should and an upload dialog pops up. However, in the WYSIWYG editor in BC the box displays as it should.

  • Strange characters displaying in FR pdf and excel export

We are using Financial Reporting on a Planning application. We have a dimension, projects, whose aliases display on the report. Now the strange part. On some projects, not all, during some report runs, but not all, some, but not all, of the spaces in the alias are translated into a question mark in the pdf, and then when the pdf is exported to excel, the question marks are translated into black diamonds with a question mark inside.
We’ve seen it happen on a handful of projects. These are from the same report, first one from report ran Monday, second one from report ran yesterday.

    P.F0256REC-M88STS Forecast
Ok, the diamonds won't paste into this message. But you can see the little squares in the second line - those are the diamonds with question marks inside.
Has anyone seen this behavior before? Or know what to do about it?
    Sabrina

I've seen similar items with 2 causes:
    1. When creating the alias names, the DBAs copied from emails and pasted the names in, which caused the formatting issues. Solution, get them to remove the existing alias and retype manually.
I think this is probably your problem too.
    2. Font substitution: The other time was due to differing fonts installed on the developer, print server and BI server machines, causing some incorrect items to be displayed - check that the fonts are the same on all servers/instances.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers, Iain

  • Mac Mail is displaying strange characters

My Mac Mail is displaying these strange characters on a number of seemingly random emails from people. However, when I copy the message and paste it into a word document or the internet browser address bar it converts these "letter A in a box" characters into what the words actually were. But this is a hassle and I'd rather just be able to read the text directly in my mail application... Thanks for the help.. hopefully it is a simple fix.

  • Mail displaying strange characters

    Hello
I was previously using Thunderbird, but when I saw how nice Mail is, I switched over. Now I am starting to rethink, because it's displaying some very strange characters without reason. What could be the cause of this? Here is a screenshot (I blurred out people's names): <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/davidjohn/miscellaneous/Picture2.pn g" border="0"</a>

  • Adobe Reader displaying strange characters

Hello! I am writing my uni task. For that I downloaded a .pdf document from my university, which has text boxes for me to fill in. I do not know how/with which program this file was created. I first tried dealing with it using the Windows 8 Reader app. Several times, when I switched from the document to the Desktop and back, all my text was converted into strange characters. I started saving the document before switching, and this seemed to solve the problem at first. But then at some point I saved and closed it, and when I opened it the next time, only the box I modified last (with an essay) was converted into strange characters. When I copy it somewhere, the text does not appear. I tried opening the thing with Adobe Reader. It does not convert anything into weird symbols, but the ones from the previous time remain. Is there any way I can get the information back?

  • Fonts displaying in strange characters in Email and Web Browser

Myself and my creative director (on two different computers) are seeing strange characters in our email clients and web browser. He uses Entourage for Email and I use Thunderbird. We both use Firefox for a web browser.
This does not happen with every email or with every web page, what could it be?
    View a screenshot here:
    ftp://www.hanlonftp.com/upload/fontProblem.jpg

Clear out the font cache files from the hard drive with Font Finagler. Also, if you have the fonts Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic on the drive, delete them.

Just to update this topic if anyone else has the issue. I've fixed it by manually amending the following setting in about:config -
    Preference name: intl.accept_languages
    Value: en-gb, en
If you're in the US you'd use ''en-us, en'' instead.
I then re-ran Firefox Sync and now on the Windows machines this value shows up as User Defined instead of default and this is now kept when syncing (I'm assuming the default values are not included when syncing preferences, for obvious reasons).

  • Excel shows strange characters over Remote desktop

    Hi,
Experiencing this weird issue were when I  RDP to my computer , the characters in excel sheet display weird characters
For instance the letter A looks squished
When opening the same excel sheet locally, the normal text is displayed.
Repaired office, looked for updates and nothing seems to fix it.
All your help will be greatly appreciated.

First of all.   I did not say we only had the problem with Server 2008 R2.   We DO NOT have any problem at all with Server 2008 R2.   The only problem is when using RDP to run an application on either Server 2003 or Server 2008.
That means the original version, the 32-bit version of Server 2008.
We have just tried various clients.  The clients tried include XP, Win 7 and Win 8.1.   On Win 8.1 the RDP version is 6.3.9600.   On XP the RDP version is 6.0.6001.   I am not sure which RDP was being used on Win 7.
All of these clients had the same problem that I am posting about.   Strange characters.   They almost look like an incorrect character set.
The very same application that is giving us problems via RDP was tried by running directly via the LAN and WAN.  When this app is run in this manner everything looks fine and there are no strange character issues.  Just in case anyone wants to
suggest that we run this app in that manner, forget it!   The reason we run using terminal services is because the performance is way too slow of the WAN link if we try to run direct.  I also want to point out that this app has been running,
using terminal services for  several years now and there has not been an issue.
As for screen shots, I'm working on that.

  • Strange characters in WEBI report

    Hi,
When I run a WEBI report, i see strange characters in the cells. Pls refer to attached screen shot. The output is sometimes displaying correctly and sometimes not.
I run the query generated by WEBI at the backend, I get the correct results.
I tried to create a separate report with some of the columns. Even then I get these strange characters.
Please let me know if you have anything solution on this.
    I use
    BOXI R3.1 SP5
    Cheers
    Shreyas

    Hi Shreyas,
I was interested to see the database output so that I can see what values are coming to report.
Does the report contain some accentuated characters like Ö,É,ć etc. or some other characters.
As the issue is not coming with Deski and WRC then it could be an issue with the application server.
Which application do you use? IIS or Tomcat or some other server?
Sometimes, the application servers do not support UTF-8 encoding. In case of Tomcat, you can check the server.xml file. You can check knowledge base article on SAP portal.
Also check if the desired font is added in fontalias.xml.
    Regards,
    Yuvraj

  • Strange Characters in Mail and Safari

    Hello,
Just got my mini home and have noticed strange characters appearing in both Mail and Safari.
It seems to be a font problem, but changing the fonts in mail and safarui prefs doesn't seem to fix it.
Specifically: The apple start page rss stories display a weird font, so do the mail headers in mac mail.
Yes, I did a search of the forum and the only things I seem to be coming up with are font issues related to outlook receiving mail on a pc.
    Any suggestions?
    Stefan

Without seeing what you mean by "strange characters" it is hard to tell, but the most common cause of gibberish text is the font Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic. Dump them if you have them. Also clean your font caches with FontFinagler (use google to find it).
Send a screen shot if you like (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • Strange characters on report from field overrun

We have a report, created with Cystal Reports 10, that is now giving us an issue. It is displayed via web browser.
When displayed using Crystal Enterprise 10, it looks fine. But when displayed with CR XI r2 JRC, we get strange characters after the field when the field on the report is overrun. The field on the report is not formatted wide enough for all data but this has not been an issue in the past, the overrun just displayed fine.
The display we are getting looks like:
    For short data we get:
    *TEST
For longer data (overrun) we get:
    *TEST1瀲瀀猀
    That should have displayed *TEST12.
I think I can get around this by formatting the field wider (I have not tried it yet) but we wanted to know if this was a known issue with a root cause / fix.

    - The report is only generated and viewed via the web browser. A web screen takes criteria for the report data, does an SQL call to pull the data into a report table, and then calls the CR report viewer to display the data.
    - JRC is the java Runtime Component. In CR XI, a package is supplied to install as part of the web server for doing the web report viewing withut having to install CR Enterprise.
    - The original .rpt file, the report template, does not have the characters in it nor do they show up in Crystal Reports in any way that I have found to try to test.
    - With using the JRC, there is no CE10 database. As noted above, CR Enterprise is not installed. As for the database that contains the report data table, it is MS SQL Server 200 with all appropriate patches applied.
I just tested extending the display field to well longer than the data but it did not help. The strange characters are still being displayed.

  • Report previews and prints with strange characters

I have a custom XI application which uses CCrystalReportViewer11 (C++ wrapper around ActiveX control) to preview reports. This works for hundreds of installations, but for one the text is displayed and printed with strange characters. If the customer exports the report the characters are displayed as normal. What could be wrong?

More than likely, it's a printer driver issue. It may even be that there is no default printer driver installed. Also, see if setting a different default printer driver helps. You can also set the "No Printer" option in the report by opening it in the designer and going to the File menu and selecting "Page Setup".
