Strange characters encoding with CS3

I have just installed Web premium CS3 and am working on my
first new project
with Dreamweaver. All good so far except - it is not encoding
some special
characters properly. For instance if I type £50 in the
design window, it
appears as £50 in code view - rather than &pound50:
Same thing with quotes - it does not always put the
" into code view.
Same deal with dashes.
Must be a default setting I guess but I've been using
Dreamweaver since
Version 3 and never had to deal with this before.
Thanks

Thanks very much David. I think it may well be a server
problem.

• Export to doc returns strange characters / works with wondershare

Hi
I have a 300 pages pdf which I need to convert to doc so I can import it with all formatting into our wiki (has a doc imported, but no pdf importer).
I tried different settings within acrobat (latest version, running on Lion), strange result:
The headlines and Table of content looks fine, the rest looks like:

as said, throughout the document, the headers are fine.
I did the same with the pdf to doc converter from wondershare (formerly anybizsoft) which runs perfectly fine, but hey, I do have THE pdf tool - acrobat - I can't believe I need other 3rd party tools :-)
There is no security on the document and all fonts are embedded including the encoding (built-in) (see screenshot attached)
I tried preseving flow and formatting, but the result is always the same.
thanks a lot in advance
Andre

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried that idea before, too.
The apostrophe ends up showing in the cell in front of the value of
the field, when it is coded in the Cold fusion page. So, I need a
different way of fixing this problem.
Any help is greately appreciated.

• Problem Encoding WMV to FLV with Media Encoder CS4 (but not with CS3)

Hello,
I have been attempting to encode some WMV files with Flash Media Encoder CS4 (I have Adobe Creative Suite CS4 installed) but it has failed, generating this error:
- Source File: C:\Documents and Settings\usf\Desktop\incoming\ch01.wmv
- Output File: C:\Documents and Settings\usf\Desktop\incoming\ch01_3.flv
- Preset Used: Custom
- Video: 624x343, Same as source [fps]
- Audio: MPEG Layer III (MP3), 128 [kbps], Stereo
- Bitrate: VBR, 400.00 [kbps]
- Encoding Time: 00:06:36
5/28/2010 11:26:16 AM : Encoding Failed
Error compiling movie.
Unknown error.
On another computer where Adobe Media Encoder CS3 is installed (with Creative Suite CS3), I experience no such problem. I do notice that when I add the WMV to Adobe Media Encoder CS3, it opens a window that prompts me to use "ffdshow", which will apparently work if it's configured to decode the file. I click "OK" and start the queue in the encoder. A few minutes later I get a successfully encoded FLV file.
I have come to question whether Adobe Media Encoder CS4 should be re-installed, whether the entire Suite should re-installed, or if there is some patch or fix I can install somewhere. Adobe Media Encoder CS4 is installed on my "production" computer which also has Adobe Premiere Pro (CS3) and Adobe Premiere Elements (7).
Could use some advice here.
Glen
P.S. the files will also not export to FLV using Adobe Premiere or Premiere elements...

Again, the reason we are capturing with Windows Media Encoder is because we tried using Live Flash Encoder to capture directly into flash but our equipment wasn't fast enough and it was dropping frames all over the place. We also don't have the space to capture into an uncompressed format because we don't have the available storage, and our events can be 8 hours long or more (each video is about 15 minutes, 20 or more videos)
Ive listened to everything in my workflow and it sounds fine until the outputted FLV file from AME.
WME is capturing at the following specs:
160kbps 48KHz Windows Media Audio 9.2 codec (stereo) 1 pass CBR
1800kbps 1 pass CBR video
29.97 fps
640x360 resolution
buffer size: 5 seconds
key frame interval: 8 seconds
I have verified this with a codec info utility I ran on the wmv files.
AME is encoding with the following specs:
FLV Multiplexing
On2 VP6 codec
620x360 resolution
800kbps 2 pass VBR
100% undershoot at best quality
160kbps stereo MP3 audio
I verified the above with the same codec info utility (gspot 2.70a) and it is all acurate, it also told me that the audio is at 44.1KHz rather than 48 (there was no place to specify this, is this a limitatino of the VP6 codec?)
Yes, these are our source assets. They're being captured either through an XL2 via firewire, or from an analog program feed converted to firewire via a Canopus converter box.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to get rid of this, or a different encoder (either to capture with rather low cpu resources, or to encode into flash) let me know. I can provide a sample of the clipping if you need
Thanks,
Peter

• Issue with strange characters

Hi All,
A strange scenario ..
In the source system A text appears to have a hyphen (-)..
When my BW QA environment pulls the data in the PSA the same hyphen appears to be '#'
but my Dev environment pulls the same record, it appears the characters shows correctly as hyphen ..
What could be the possible reason for this issue? Could you guide me where should I look for these?
And the next part of the question :-
When the same record is sent via OHS, the hyphen actually shows as hyphen in the generated file(atleast when I try to view the file via al11).. When the file is sent via FTP, the hyphen actually gets converted to some strange characters(âu20ACu201C )..
Could someone please guide me ..
Thanks,
Debajyoti

Hi Debajyoti,
Check the RSKC t-code, if you have the hyphen character, or put "ALL_CAPITAL" to let all character as valid.
Sometimes, there are errors and/or conversion of the characters that you can see in the error message in the load.
The message sometimes has an hexadecmal number (I don't know if it is your case) that you can check with the next link.
There are characters that are allowed in the source system (i.e. R/3) because of system language configured in R/3 and not in BW, or Unicode configured in R/3 and not in BW.
Also, there are some control characters that sap doestn allow to be loaded (you can see them in the list).
You can validate each character that comes from PSA with a function module in the mapping (defined as routine) for the particular InfoObject that you want, and if it is the case, you can convert it or replace it

• Report previews and prints with strange characters

I have a custom XI application which uses CCrystalReportViewer11 (C++ wrapper around ActiveX control) to preview reports. This works for hundreds of installations, but for one the text is displayed and printed with strange characters. If the customer exports the report the characters are displayed as normal. What could be wrong?

More than likely, it's a printer driver issue. It may even be that there is no default printer driver installed. Also, see if setting a different default printer driver helps. You can also set the "No Printer" option in the report by opening it in the designer and going to the File menu and selecting "Page Setup".

• Encoding strange characters?

hi
when i encrypt a text file using blowfish, the resulting ciphertext will always have the strange characters such as $║|i╝╞╞╥ , so when i wrote the encrypted text into plain text file, only the □□ characters will appear instead...
how do i overcome this problem, to preserve the original characters in the text file?
thanks. any help are greatly appreciated.

Fist thing that you should understand is once encripted it is no longer text.
So there is no point trying to read encrypted text.
If you want to have valid text after encrypting you might need to find a text only encryption method.
Eventhough you cant see the those chars it is in in the file. it is just that the program that you use to view the file cant handle those chars.
If you want to save the text in a readable form (But not understandable) you can use URLEncoder to encode the chars

• Strange characters in WEBI report

Hi,
When I run a WEBI report, i see strange characters in the cells. Pls refer to attached screen shot. The output is sometimes displaying correctly and sometimes not.
I run the query generated by WEBI at the backend, I get the correct results.
I tried to create a separate report with some of the columns. Even then I get these strange characters.
Please let me know if you have anything solution on this.
I use
BOXI R3.1 SP5
Cheers
Shreyas

Hi Shreyas,
I was interested to see the database output so that I can see what values are coming to report.
Does the report contain some accentuated characters like Ö,É,ć etc. or some other characters.
As the issue is not coming with Deski and WRC then it could be an issue with the application server.
Which application do you use? IIS or Tomcat or some other server?
Sometimes, the application servers do not support UTF-8 encoding. In case of Tomcat, you can check the server.xml file. You can check knowledge base article on SAP portal.
Also check if the desired font is added in fontalias.xml.

• Acrobat Reader Prints Strange Characters

The Reader prints files in a strange character encoding which looks like nothing - )*&#$@^(%)&%@#?><{::} and characters you cannot find on your keyboard. When printing from other PC's it's working perfectly. It does that with all languages and all PDF files.
Here is a scanned result of the printing:

You can also try opening the PDF with preview, then doing a copy and paste to TextEdit and printing from there.
Adobe makes it easier, but you do have software to accomplish this.
Only download Adobe reader from this site, to avoid "fakes/spoofs/malware" that will cause damage to your machine.

• How to add special characters in Flash CS3

Hi, i need the help of some flash guru… these last weeks we were working with cloversites.com to build a community website… the interface is awesome etc etc however we in Malta have eight special characters (GCZ with a dot on top of them and an H with a second strikethrough). Those at cloversites wrestled with the problem, they could see the characters on their computers but when they entered the text in the site, flash couldn't render the special characters. Here is their message:
I am extremely sorry about this, but we were unable to add in your characters. We attempted to add them into our software but they did not work. We worked on it all morning and realized that we need an extra add-on for our keyboards. Adding special characters is nothing new to us and have answered this request for many of our international users. For some reason, the Maltese characters did not work in our sites. For example, our "option-G" is the copyright symbol so it will need to be transferred over to international characters.
Unfortunately, we thing that this has to do with Adobe Flash CS3. The software allowed me to embed the characters, but we were unable to render them on the web. Which led us to think it had to do with the version Adobe is running and its inability to render the text through its software on the web. None of the characters worked on the web, and it looks like its just an Adobe bug. So we are able to type and use the Maltese characters, but Adobe Flash is having trouble with them.
Does anybody know of any possible solution?

see if codepoints-to-string() is suitable for you ..

• Steps to UTF-8 Encoding with Oracle 8i and Weblogic 6.1SP1

What are the Steps to UTF-8 Encoding with Oracle 8i and Weblogic
6.1SP1?
I have:
- Oracle 8.1.5 database created with character set=UTF8 and national
character set=UTF8
- Weblogic 6.1SP1 without any encoding mechanism set
(though I did play with
<jsp-param><param-name>encoding</param-name>
<param-value>UTF-8</param-value>
</jsp-param>
in the weblogic.xml for a while though it seemed not to make a
difference)
- JSP pages set to content='text/html; charset=UTF-8'
- JSP form POSTs set to enctype="UTF-8"
I can copy and paste Chinese Kanji from a UTF8 encoded web page into
form text boxes but when I post the data it comes back as different
Kanji. Then once it is posted the Kanji stays the same on repeated
posts. The same Kanji text also looks different when viewed in a form
text box than when viewed as straight text on the page.
Is there anything else? Or am I already encoding characters twice?
Please help!

• Pages document turned to gibberish-strange characters in rectangles. Can't read underlying text (still there)

I use a Pages document (password protected) as a frequent reference. It is 22 pages of text. Suddenly most text was replaced with strange characters, each encased in a little rectangle, so document was unreadable. Selecting a section of text, I could right-click and see that underlying text was still there, just not readable onscreen. Style was "Normal*." I don't know what the " * " means. I selected all and changed style to "Heading 9" on the list. All text reappeared, so my data is ok - for now (though not formatted as I want it). I can't trust Pages, however, and don't know what caused the problem or how to avoid it.
Note that the style now shows "Heading 9*". I don't know why the " * ". I tried selecting all and making "Normal" the global style, but the strange characters wouldn't budge. Switching back to Normal brings back gibberish.
Some text is Verdana; I just noticed that changing font also got rid of gibberish. Changing back to Verdana brought back gibberish.
Note that not every line of text was changed to gibberish; some were just fine.
Other Pages documents are fine - right now. I notice that there are asterisks in Style in other text documents.
I'm an experienced computer user, new to Pages in the fall when it came with my MacBook Air. In this document, format isn't all that important, but I can imagine where this would be a huge disaster for other types of documents.
Any help in figuring out what's going on most appreciated.

Tom -
"That sounds like Apple's Last Resort font, which gets used when for some reason the app forgets about the font being used. Use Fontbook to make sure you don't have duplicate Verdanas on your machine. Also try cleaning your font caches with Onyx or by doing a safe boot"
Wow! Who would have guessed! Thank you for the advice; Fontbook revealed a number of duplicate fonts - ot Verdana, interestingly enough - which I have now resolved. I then switched all text to Trebuchet MS, and everything reverted to normal. I can live with Trebuchet.
This problem appeared on the same day (before or after I wasn't sure) I installed MS Office. Could this have caused the problem?
Thanks for your prompt reply, explanation and solutions.

• Strange characters showing up in Essbase Server pick list

I have one user, that is logging into her Essbase spreadsheet addin and seeing all kinds of strange characters following each server name in the Server drop down list within the Essbase System Login window. Any ideas what would cause this?
What we have found is the Server names and strange characters are showing up in the registry key: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Hyperion Solutions\Essbase\Login". Normally you would see something like this in this key:
(Default) Reg_SZ (Value not set)
Server Reg_SZ ServerName1
Server1 Reg_SZ ServerName2
Server2 Reg_SZ ServerName3
etc.
What is showing now, is the original list of servers, with 10 or so new ones that repeat the server names that were already there followed by strange characters. There were 10 extra entries in this particular persons drop down list. We deleted them from the Registry and she was good for a few minutes and then they came back!! Anybody seen this before? We are running 11.1.2.1 of the Oracle Essbase Spreadsheet Add-in. Excel 2010. Windows 7. She is also using the In2HypEssbase ribbon, but so are many others, and she is the only one experiencing this problem.
Thanks,
Mike

Sorry, I forgot to mention that we did delete them from the registry and they did disappear from the drop down list. But a little while later it happened again! They seem to keep coming back and we don't know why. Again, she is the only person in the company that has had this issue. I have had her shutdown everything and reboot her pc with no luck as well, just to make sure there wasn't something quirky going on in the memory of the pc.

• Acrobat Pro 9.4.6 Printing Strange Characters

I currently use Acrobat Pro 9.4.6 and when printing to a PDF file it prints strange characters...not at all what I want to be printed. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium. Have others experienced this? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Jim

Thanks for taking the time to reply. It's interesting that this problem only manifests itself in certain applications. A friend installed a program called CuteWriterPDF and the applications that I was having difficulty with writing PDF files are taken care of perfectly with this small program. It was just an experiment but it worked. This is not a perfect fix as I would prefer a solution from Adobe but at least I'm back up and running.
Thanks much for taking the time to reply!

• Strange characters in pdf

Hello,
i have a strange problem with "strange characters" (such as "à", "ö" etc). I have to edit pdf files produced with Adobe Acrobat by other people. In some cases, when i try to "copy and paste" text from this file into a "note" (within the same file), the strange characters appear scrambled, such as "Ÿ" instead of "ü", or "Ž" instead of "é".
I noticed the following:
1) on the screen, the original text looks correct, but after copying and pasting it into the note-tool (within Acrobat), it looks scrambled. If i paste it into another application (TextEdit or Word), it stays scrambled.
2) this happens not for all files, but only for some of them. note that all files come from the same source...
3) The same string of text looks and behaves absolutely fine when i open the pdf file with another application such as Preview.
4) In Acrobat, i can edit the scrambled notes to make out of an "Š" an "é" - but that is a time consuming way of doing things.
I think it has something to do with Font availability, or Unicode, or so, but a don't find the right thing to do. And i really need a solution, since editing within Acrobat is part of my money-earning work ...
Who has a useful hint ???
Thanks in advance,
thomas

Guessing here, but possibly the others and you aren't set to the same language? - the font codes for the diacriticals may vary between languages?
