Strange connection problems -- software or hardware?

I've been experiencing some strange connectivity problems of late, and am wondering if it's a software or hardware issue. I'm running OS-X 10.4.11, and have noticed web-associated "drop-outs" occurring. When I'm browsing, any of the following will happen:
1. the pages will periodically stop loading, or will take forever to load a few final images.
2. the page will load with a different format (completely unformatted, like a throwback to Mosaic!).
3. the page won't load at all, and will instead give me either a "DNS error" message, or will default to my ISP's "We couldn't resolve your page" message.
4. Nothing out of the ordinary happens.
Throughout this process, the connection strength is 100%.
It seems this happens with both Firefox and Safari. Is this an issue with driver software, or is my Airport Card giving out? My computer is about 3 years old.

I have been having intermittent connection problems on several computers over many years now. We have 12 eMacs, all purchased within a few months of each other, all with 10.4.11. Some computers have almost perfect internet connection, but some are constantly losing connection. If the user just waits a few minutes, the network just comes back or if they open system preferences and renew the DHCP lease it comes back as well. We have tried replacing cables, reloading the operating system, repairing permissions, reseting safari... We are all connecting through ethernet cables through wall jacks then to a switch that is connected to our router. Our DSL provider claims it can't be wiring or a problem on their end or they would see it and we would all have problems. I am not super computer literate... Any suggestions for what I should check on the 4 or so computers that are having lots of connection problems?
Thanks for any words of wisdom!!!

Hi, my n95 gone nuts these few days, after i installed a chinese supported firmware for it, my n95 have this constant lagging problem and have to take out the battery to shut it down, and have to wait for a while for it to "cool down" approx 10-15 min or else it cant boot up, just show a blank black screen, even it DID boot up, playing mp3 can lag up the phone too, so before i am going to the Nokia care centre, anyone kind enough to elobrate whether it is SOFTWARE or HARDWARE problem thanks, i was hoping it was software problem so that its easier to fix

  • Strange connection problems

Wow, there are alot of syncing problems with the Classic...
Anyway, here's mine. It's not that bad, just real annoying.
Everytime I plugged it in, I see the screen that had the first box (out of four) checked that selects auto sync. If I check manually manage, it resyncs for what seems like FOREVER. After I get control back and try to manually delete or move songs it seems to resync again and it takes forever. If I disconnect and reconnect, the setting defaults back to auto sync setting.
I starting using the USB port in the back and it worked great for a while, now its back to the problem. This problem keeps me from manually managing my music- any suggestions?

  • Before I return iPad: Is the WiFi problem software or hardware?

Obviously there is a problem with the iPad Wifi.
Dozens of threads full of unhappy owners here. Many
    more on MacRumors.
I am getting ready to give up on the iPad. For $500 the
WiFi shouldn't be **** poor, dropping connections and
    giving me low signal coverage.
Just one question. Has anyone figured out if this is a
hardware issue (antenna in bad place) or something that
can be fixed with a software update?
Software update I can wait for. Hardware I return this thing.
Oh, and if someone has a fix, please post it.
And yes, I did all these steps:
    1. Reboot your router - just unplug it from the power.
    2. Reset your network settings - Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network settings. When your iPad restarts, tap Settings > WiFi > Other and re-enter your network name, security, and password.
Still bad WiFi coverage and losing of password. I have a Verizon Actiontech "G" router.

The only issue, if it turns out to be that, I'm experiencing is the seemingly low signal level.
Last night I formulated a theory that I've ALMOST convinced myself has some merit.
I'm wondering if the iPad's software conserves power by supplying the antenna as needed thereby helping to achieve the 10-12hrs of published run time?
In reading these many threads and performing various speed tests, I see my bars increase and decrease from a dot to full as needed a lot of the time.

  • Mid 2013 Haswell Macbook Air Wifi problem: software or hardware?

I have the 11" Macbook Air (mid-June 2013, Haswell) and it has problems connecting to wifi. It reluctantly connects after searching for the network for a few minutes, but then it stays connected.
My question is: can anyone tell me if this is a hardware issue (in which case return/repair is necessary) or a software issue? If it can be fixed by an update, I don't mind waiting, but I don't want to waste my time if the machine is physically defective.

There is an update available now.

  • Clean OS install problems - software or hardware?

Hello all, I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I have had problems recently trying to do a clean install of the os. It failed with lion, and now with mountain lion it has been going for three days but is still moving. With lion i tried downloading multiple times, and put it on the usb multiple times. My windows partition works fine, so this leads me to wonder if it's not a hardware problem and if I'm consistently getting a bad download. The download worked on my sisters computer though, but this was an upgrade from lion and not a clean install via USB. I tried going all the way back to leopard as I couldn't find my snow leopard disk and that installed fine. Anyone have any ideas on what's up? Is it maybe a piece of hardware that needs to be replaced? Should I continue letting the mountain lion try to install despite the fact that it has been going three days even though the loading bar is still moving? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
    - Ryan

Wifi? there have been problems - and fixes. I assume that is the only thing that could take so long (though download an OS why should it take longer than downloading three full length movies from iTunes Store? it shouldn't)
Clean? just clone your system or make sure you have a good backup (or two) and with the actual install process - not the download which is separate issue - it can go like light-ning on an SSD in minutes. And Setup Assistant? nice good way to start off.
I would say there is no way to know if your system will run better or not or if it takes longer in the end, or just 'safer' and more stable method to get ML installed.
And you do want to save the installer so you can avoid downloading another 4GB later.
Free space or lack thereof is one factor, or maybe it is time for an SSD or new hard drive; swapping out the hard drive before it fails or checking to see if spare blocks have been used is best indication of likely or impending drive issue.
There are guides how best to put Lion/ML on 8GB USB and using Disk-Maker

Making sure your disk drive does not have any errors can only be done by spending time and effort and scanning for media errors or having a program that will - and a new OS is a good enough time for that.
Mac users just need to stay up to date and make sure your hard drive is free of errors,
OS X Lion: Unable to download OS X Lion wirelessly from Mac App Store - "Your device or computer could not be verified"
    Products Affected
Mac App Store, OS X Lion
    Symptoms
When attempting to purchase or download OS X Lion from the Mac App Store wirelessly with your Apple ID account, you may receive a dialog stating "Your Device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance." This could happen when upgrading Mac OS X v10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8 to OS X Lion via a Wi-Fi connection.
    Resolution
Use the following steps to delete your network preferences.
Important: You must be logged in as an administrator.
Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
Choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
    Type /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Copy the file networkinterfaces.plist to the desktop (to make a precautionary backup).
Delete the file "networkinterfaces.plist." from SystemConfiguration.
    Restart your Mac.
Create new location in Network preferences, in System Preferences.
Once your computer has restarted, you will need to refresh your network settings to be able to connect to the Internet again:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Network from the View menu.
From the Location pop-up menu, choose "New Location".
Type a name for your location and click OK.
Click the Apply Now at the bottom right to accept the changes.
If your network connection requires any special settings, you will need to enter them again.
Once you have made these changes, you should be able to connect to the Internet, open App Store, and try your OS X Lion purchase or download again.
    Additional Information
This issue may occur if your Mac's Ethernet port is damaged or inoperable, even if you aren't using Ethernet to try to download Lion.

  • DB adapter and connections problem (Software caused connection abort)

    Hi all!
I've heard about some problems of BPEL with database pooling and restoring the connection to the database. I think I might ran into a problem linked with this issue.
I have a process with a DB adapter that executes custom SQL (SELECT I.SEQ.NEXTVAL FROM DUAL). Yesterday everything worked fine. Over the night the database has been restarted. Today, when I try to execute the process I receive this error:

    </fault
I don't believe the problem is in using custom SQL but in establishing new DB connection (I'm not a DB expert so I don't know exactly the problem).
Can anyone please explain something about this and what should I do to ensure this error doesn't repeat?
After restarting opmn the process is executed successfully.

Are you using locally defined datasources (setting in wsdl of the dbadapter) or have you set them up at the application server (managed) ?

  • Connecting problems: software not installed?

Alright, lately I've been having a few problems with my iTunes. At first it wouldn't show up at all, and then when I fixed that, this happened. Whenever I connect my touch to the computer via USB cable, this message appears on my iTunes:
"This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again."
So basically, I can't sync anything from my iTunes into my iPod, it just charges. I have removed and installed it again, doesn't work. Is this some kind of other virus or something else? PLEASE HELP!!

This takes a bit more work than just reinstalling iTunes. You have to do a complete removal of Apple software (see this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 ) and re-installation.
The second half of this is make sure Apple Mobile Device Services is running properly after the install. See this article for help/information: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
If Windows doesn't prompt you to reboot after the installations, make sure you do anyway.

  • 5800 strange connectivity problem [urgent]

My phone cannot access internet at all. The problem it seems is that the browser(o any other application) can not find the destination(or access point). If I choose default destination as Internet it simply says cannot connect and If i choose always ask it shows up the choose connection menu but it only has the search for Wi-fi option. It doesn't show my carriers access points.
I switched my phone on and off still doesn't work.

Delete all access points from your Operator. Request them to send fresh settings.. Save them and see if it makes any difference. While saved, just confirm they are not getting saved under the 'Uncategorised' folder ..

  • Strange Connectivity Problem- Totally Stumped

    Hey Guys!
Alright, I'm completely stumped and beginning to get very frustrated. Maybe you can figure it out.
I can't access my school's online learning website from my internet at home. My roommates can- one has a MacBook, one has a PC. If I try to access it on any other network, I can just fine. But, when I take the ethernet cable out of the router at home and plug it directly into my computer, I can access the website. On occasion I will be able to go on to the website, but it always seems to be around 3 AM or later, never during a normal time. I've tried doing a bit of troubleshooting on the internet connection and the router, nothing is making sense.
I have a MacBook Pro and a Belkin router.
    Anyone have any ideas? :\

I high lighted the clue in your post. Your ISP modem likely assigned one IP Address to the first device it sees connected to it and caches the mac address of this device. In your case the first device was your computer. So when you connect your computer to the modem with the Ethernet cable the modem recognizes it. Then when you replace the computer by connecting the router to the modem the modem does not recognize the mac address of the router so does not assign it an ip address. Try shutting everything down, power off the modem, power up the modem, power up the router, then power up the computer. See if that works.
You did not mention if it is just this web site that does not work or if all web sites do not work. My response assumes you have no web access when you observe this issue.

  • Connectivity problems on ATM MPLS network

We have implemented a country wide MPLS network based on 8500 platforms. We have encountered some strange connectivity problems between some PE's. Without apparent reason connectivity is lost between some PEs and restored after some time. The global routing table is perfectly stable among all the routers on the path between respective PE's. Also the LVC's & TAGs are stable and practically we were unable to find any change between the working and not working state. As a curious thing, during the outage (minutes) clearing routes into a PE VRF was restoring connectivity on the respective VRF and all other VRFs on the respective PE also!
Has enyone seeing similar problems before?
PE routers are 3660 series and we've tried all IOS available on CCO.

Have you made any provisioning (upgrading connectivity) bet the PEs and Ps....I suffer such a similar problem with our network PEs and I notice that this happen after provisioning links between our PEs (RPMs in MGX 8850) and the ATM LSR (BPX 8600).
when i issue "clear ip route vrf *" or reload the RPM.....all the VRFs operate normally again.....so I get used to such a problem after any network provisioning process but still i couldn't relate this to problems with VRFs.

  • The "gig" is not up. IMHO the problem is with software, not hardware

There very well could be a few iPhones that have hardware problems but my opinion / findings say it is sofrtware rather than hardware.
Case in point. I have owned my iPod Touch (32 GB) for over 6 months now and have had no problems with it until I installed 2.0 software. The problem got even worse on the Touch when I upgraded to 2.0.1. The problem was freezing up which required a special rest proceedure and a complete restore. I had the same problem with not one but two iPhone 3G's (I returned the first one). Same scenario. Speical reset and complete restore solved the problem. I have now had no problems except for a little instability (such as slow keyboard from time to time) for the past 4 days. Bear in mind this is on BOTH the iPOd Touch AND the iPhone 3G. ONe would think that if the problem was with hardware that the problem would not be with both the iPhone 3G AND the iPOd Touch.
Would love to hear the opinions of others.
    Ken

If your question is "Is the 2.0/2.01 software buggier/slower/flakier than the 1.0/1.1/etc. software for iPhone/iPod Touch", then the answer is of course SMS typing slows down on occasion now, weird pauses, freezes etc. are all new to 2.0/2.01.
This doesn't mean that the iPhone 3G hardware isn't possibly flawed as well-that still hasn't been answered. But its pretty common knowledge (I think) that 2.0/2.01 is much less stable than the 1.0 OS. (on the flip side, look at all the new stuff we get to play with in 2.0/2.01 )

  • Trying to update iPod software; Connection problems.

Okay, so I have the iPod Touch 4th Gen, and when I plugged it into my computer, iTunes said that there was a iPod software update available. I've tried several times to download the update, but every time I try the same thing happens: It only downloads a few hundred KB of it, then it stops there, and the remaining time displayed keeps going up until it shows up to 24 hours or more, and finally, an error message comes up saying it couldn't complete the request because of connection problems. (error = -3259)
On a similar note, when downloading songs from iTunes, I constantly have to pause and resume them in order for them to fully download. Otherwise it just stops where it is.
However, I can still connect to the store just fine, with only a very few timeouts here and there, but those are easily remedied by re-visiting the page I tried to view.
So, clearly I have some sort of issue with my connection to iTunes. Can someone please help me?

care to share what the other way to download it is??
My boss has an ipad, last week he downloaded the 2 entire seasons of 24, and a season of Rescue Me with no problems at all, now he's trying to download a movie and he keeps getting this error. If those shows downloaded just fine why won't the movie download? Our Windows firewalls are disabled by Group Policy so that's not the problem... and our security software hasn't changed since last week when he successfully downloaded those shows so that shouldn't be the issue either. We don't use proxys. He's wired to the internet so it's not a wireless timing out on him issue. He's on the latest version of itunes. He's logged out of itunes store, shut down itunes, and relogged in... same problem.
