Strange CPU freezing (L505-S5997 model)

Hello! I've had this laptop since last Christmas and it has been been doing well before, even with Windows 7. However, today, my desktop screen and toolbar keep randomly locking up (both do so seperately and randomly,) with my mouse and keyboard stick active. So I tried Ctrl+Alt+Delete and found that Task Manager doesn't help. Oddly enough, selecting "Switch Users" and selecting my name makes the CPU run normally...for a few seconds, then it locks up once more.
...But the bizzare freezing doesn't end there. For whatever reason, I can still use a few programs, such as FireFox, even when the Desktop and Task Manager is frozen. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone can help with this issue.
Thank you!

Satellite L505-S5997
What do you mean by "locking up"? Does the CPU usage go to 100% on Task Manager's Performance tab?
Does this occur often enough so that we can make experiments?

  • Msi Z68 GD80 (G3) strange Cpu Temp.reading

Hello all, this is my first post here.
I just purchased an Msi Z68 GD80(G3) and I think I have strange cpu temp. reading as seen in the Hw monitor. My i5 2500k idle/load CPU temp. is equal or higher than core temps which is strange for an intel cpu,as an intel user for years I believe it should be 10-12C lower than core temps.(my previous mobo was giga p67 ud5 and never had this issue).Double checked my cpu cooler-spire thermax 2-no problems.Updated to last bios-no change-Any recommendations/solutions welcomed here.
Rest of my system as follows:
    Asus gtx560
    4*2 gb gskill ddr3 ram
    1tb samsung hd
    high power 650w power supply

Have you checked what the CPU temp shows in BIOS just after start up ? How does that compare with the HW temp.
HW Monitor's temp interpretation may just not be calibrated for the specific Fintek chip used on your MB. Maybe you want to check with the HW monitor home site as well.
How do the temps compare with whats read/displayed in Speedfan, Real Temp or Core Temp ?
If they are all similar, then it could just be a badly calibrated sensor on the board as well.
Do some comparative testing and see if there are any differences at all.
Also check with MSI technical to see if they are aware of a general tendency with regards to this, or whether a BIOS revision may have addressed such an issue. >>How to contact MSI.<<
Just recheck your heatsink seating again and maybe even reseat the CPU and do a full socket pin inspection at the same time.

  • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU Freeze Issues

    Hi,
I have dual boot option windows 7 OS and windows server 2003 installed and have been facing two issues:
    1. No drivers available for windows 2003 Enterprise edition. I have already written to MSI support for this and the answer was that I need to hunt specifically for the drivers from chipset vendors. If any of you have the drivers for windows 2003 and windows 2008, please share the same.
    2. I had previously multiple combinations -windows XP and windows Vista, windows XP and windows 7, windows 7 and windows 2000/windows 2003. In all these combinations, I have always faced a problem of system freezing and not doing anything at all. Mouse and all system activities comes to a still. Unable to find out what the issue is about. Please let me know the issue resolution ASAP. I am putting some details regarding the system below (as taken from system information from windows 7), please let me know if you want complete system information and how to upload it.

And which drivers in particular do you need? Best I'm aware is that Windows XP drivers are usually suitable for use with Windows Server 2003. And for Windows Server 2008, Vista/W7 drivers should work.

Well this particular 'issue' could be caused by just about anything, so without knowing more details about the hardware in your system, as well as more information on the problem you're having, there is no magical quick-fix solution we can give.

  • [radeon] Xorg 100% CPU, freezes, only way to resume is to reboot

Hello, I have an ATI Radeon 9250 with the bleeding edge Arch. Occasionally, my graphics will randomly stop working, and the only thing that works is the mouse (although slowly)
Rarely, the graphics cut out completely and the screen turns off, or I get an "Input Signal Out of Range" message from my monitor.
The kernel doesn't crash however, I can SSH in (very slowly) and then killall -9 Xorg (but it makes no difference on the screen).
If I run 'top' I see Xorg uses nearly 100% of CPU until it is killed by "KILL" signal. Even then, the process doesn't disappear, it just kills the processor usage.
I will see if I can get an Xorg log and 'dmesg' from one of these crashes.

I really hope someone can get to the bottom of this, it has been annoying me for quite some time. In fact, I think since the release of Xorg 7.0 if I remember.
Its gotten worse, which is why I'm posting.

I just set up the radeon driver for my HD 4200 graphics. I just installed Arch a couple of days ago so I am hopelessly noob.
Anyway, after a ton of messing around I got one screen working with KMS off, a minimal xorg.conf and then changed to 2 screens with xrandr. I don't have 3d working yet, which is not a big deal for my uses. But I figure I get something working and then start adding features.  Oh yeah, I'm using Xorg 1.7.1
    my xorg:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "HD4200"

    BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
    # Option "VGA-0" "Samsung"

    EndSubsection
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
    Group "video"
    Mode 0666
    EndSection
The command that puts the screens where I want them:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --auto --right-of DVI-0

  • Strange network freezes when wrong time is set (with transmission-gtk)

    Hi!
After transmission-gtk running for a while, the network doesn't work any more, not even the connection to the router. Even after closing transmission-gtk, the problem persists until I disconnect from the network (using wicd / wpa atm) - or wicd freezes and refuses to start again. Trying to use ifconfig / iwconfig makes the terminal freeze (not recovering with ctrl+c), other tty/vty's still work. System won't shutdown / reboot after this happens, the tty that gave the command just freezes.
Not sure where to start here... can't use iwconfig/ifconfig... can't look up stuff online while I'm on the machine trying to work this out... any hints?
    Thanks!

I have had problems where my connection would drop "coincidently" while downloading torrents. I use ipblock to block unwanted ip addresses, force encryption both ways, and use tcpkill (pretty sure it is in the "dsniff" package) to block foreign ports that seem suspicious to me. Also, I have noticed that if there is a lot of connections my network will almost halt and if I limit the connected number of connections per torrent after the swarm gets going then it will first drop peers instead of seeds so it does not really seem to effect speed either. I do not use transmission so I do not know all the particulars there ( using deluge) but there should be similar settings for encryption as well. If doing a lot of downloads I also reset my router (unplug it) for about 5 minutes when I am done and reboot just to be sure. If you think that your troubles may be caused by your isp or an anti-p2p group I would definitely give the above a shot.

  • CPU Freezing after pluging my Ipod

I have an ipod photo 20 Gb, when I plug it to my cpu I can hear the sound that it makes when something is connected through the usb port but nothing happens. I disconnect my ipod even though its says : Do not disconnect. Then on my cpu theres a message saying : To connect your ipod on the cpu you need to restore your ipod, then disconnect and reconnect your ipod.I click on Ok, Then Itunes opens by itself. I reconnect my ipod and tried to restore it, but it seems that my cpu is freezing everytimes my Ipod is connected to it. And then I cant restore it because it says that my ipod is Corrupted. But my main problem is that i cant do nothing because my cpu is freezin everytime i connect my Ipod to it. please help

No response. Too long ago to remember what happened...

  • 9.1 More strange intermitten freezes! Spooky stuff.

A strange thing happened recently on my G4 OS 9.1. Intermitten freezes. I can't leave the computer idle for more than 5 minutes or it freezes. As long as I'm working it, it's fine. But if I stop—no matter what software I'm using—it freezes. I've been through some of the other posts and have rebuilt the desktop, emptied servers from the servers folder, and removed alaises to other drives. I've also turned off my sleep and screen saver. This problem may have coincided with the replacement of my two 20" tube monitors with 19" Samsung LCDs. For a while it seemed I had to set the monitors to different Hzs to get things not to freeze. That seemed to work for a while. I reinstalled 9.1 and that seemed to work for a while too. I have a drive array attached but even when it's not on freezes still occur. I've run disk doctor and speed disk—no change. In "About this computer" it shows a big Mac OS 9.2 but says version 9.1. Any detectives out there want to take this case? Thanks.

Thanks Tom. I'll give it a try. It's a Fantom hard drive array that I use with Media 100 for video capture. It's in a chain with another drive so I guess I'll go through the connect/disconnect routine that you've suggested. As long as the computer is active it won't lock up. I just can't leave it for more than a few minutes without it freezing (the cursor works but everything else is stuck. Very odd.).

  • Strange CPU Performance issue Mac Pro, Logic 7.2.3......

    Hi there,
I am experiencing a strange issue with Logic 7.2.3 and my Mac Pro.
I am running about 70 tracks in a tune I'm writing, with a lot of the EQ and dynamics processed on a Liquid Mix, but am experiencing a lot of CPU spikes, and drop outs in logic.
The System Performance meters are showing that one of the CPU cores is at full capacity, whilst the Activity Monitor is showing a total usage of about 40%.

I have tried every combination of settings in the audio preferences, but cannot seems to get this track to play properly.
With 71 tracks, this machine is currently LESS powerful than the G5 that I have been working on until purchasing the Mac Pro.
I there anything else I can try? Are there any other means of controlling buffer size?
I have a suspicion that this may have something to do with the Plugin Delay Compensation set to 'All' - But without doing this, I cannot use the DSP effects of the liquid mix to work on a Bus! Very frustrating.
Many thanks for the help, any ideas at would be deeply appreciated,

    Great!
    Thanks for the tips guys.
I have tried to find an offending loop or part in the sequence, but cannot find anything at all thats causing the issue.
My suspiscion is that using the focusrite Liquid mix on a part, that is in turn going into a delay compensated bus, which has another Liquid mix plugin on it, is causing the issues. I use the total mix software in the fireface to perform the summing of the busses, which I think in turn may be causing the PDC to glitch a bit more.
Which is a bit annoying, as the mix in this tune is my best yet!
So I will attempt to remove the liquid mixes that are running in series in a chain, and see if thats the problem, but if that fails, time to re-format again!
I'll let you know how I get on in the next couple of days!
    Thanks again,
    Adam

  • All programs using 100% CPU, freezing, crashing, -10810, -600, and -1712 errors

Okay, so. I have a Macbook Pro from December 2012, a little over a year old.
    Version 10.9.1, running Mavericks
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB
    Startup Disk - Macintosh HD
I can send more info if I need to. I'm a graphic designer using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign usually simultaneously, as well as Spotify, Messages, Sparrow (mail), Stickies, Tweetdeck, and Evernote. I also use a wireless mouse, drawing tablet, and second screen. This has never been a problem (I mean, my old computer had 4 GB memory and handled these programs just fine, except for Final Cut Pro 7) up until recently.
For the last two months, my computer has been seriously out of whack.
I'm constantly having to refresh finder
Every time I open Google Chrome, all of my extentions crash immediately and any website I try to go to is extremely sluggish (but Safari works)
    The dock freezes
    Constant error messages: 1712, 10810, 600
    Audio fails randomly
Overall, the problem seems to be that I can't do more than one thing at a time -- I can't take a screenshot if more than two programs are open, I can't open DMG files, I can't open Spotify if any Creative Suite program is open. I've been watching the activity monitor, and it seems like each program is trying to use 100% CPU, which doesn't seem right. I have to close every program to work in Photoshop, which makes me miss calls and emails.
I've tried restarting in safe mode, verifiyng the disk and repairing permissions, I used time capsule to restore to a time before it was happening, and restored my user profile in Chrome. I'm at my complete wit's end trying to figure this out! I feel like my next step is to just reinstall my OS completely, but that would be a major setback for getting my work done, and I'm not even sure that would work.
I've looked on other forums and it seems like the Mail app typically causes problems, but I don't even use it, I use Sparrow.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP

    Launch error -10810 in Mavericks
I have the same issue since a couple of days. Nothing that I found in the community (rebuilding launch info using Onyx or manually deleting the apple.com-launch prefs) has helped me so far. Only some apps are affected (PasswordWallet 4.7.4 among them).
I can launch it once and it will run fine as long as it’s open. Next time it refuses to open displaying the error -10810 message instead. I trash the app and use a fresh one off the vendor’s dmg file I downloaded and the sequence repeats.

  • Itunes not using any CPU - freezes up for 5-10 seconds

I'm having a very odd problem. I've submitted this before and didn't get any replies at all, so perhaps it truly is a mystery (hello apple?).
    Description:
iTunes will "Freeze" and the application as a whole becomes completely unresponsive; can't focus or bring up the application window, controls won't work, and audio playback halts for a random period of time. Usually 5 to 10 seconds, but at times much longer. It's happened up to a minute.
I don't believe this a hardware issue - my drives are 7500 low latency very clean and defragged drives. It's certainly not a CPU issue - at least not the way you might think.
The strangest part of this is that when iTunes freezes, it drops down to 0 CPU cycles. Nothing at all. Overall system performance remains incredibly low - CPU & hovers around 11%, with over 50% of memory available. Nothing is hammering the system in any way. iTunes just stops. Completely stops. Nothing else stops or slows down in any way.
This is ridiculously frustrating and makes iTunes completely unusable. I wish competition would get off their butts and come to some standards on other streaming technologies, as if it weren't for AirPlay I'd say goodbye forever to iTunes. Maybe their Windows programming will finally get to professional standards with iTunes 11. Here's hopoing!
Any suggestions or thoughts would be much appreciated!
    My system specs
Core 2 2.4 GHZ Quad Core
    8 GB Ram
    Win 7 64
    iTunes 10.6.0.40
    Plenty of HD space

Please try to uninstall completely iTunes and ALL its components by followint this Apple guide:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Also make sure you have the 64-bit version of iTunes installed when you reinstall.
    Hope that helps.

  • Cpu freeze w k7n2delta-l

    hello
I have an athlon xp 2800+ running in a K7n2 delta-L and after about 3 to 4 hours of use (idle or full, it doesnt matter. But most of times @ full cpu) my computer freezes
I know that temperature is not an issue (its 37°C(98°F) on cpu and 27°C(80°F) on mobo@ idle and maximum of 46°C (114°F i guess) on cpu and 32°C(89,6°F i guess) on mobo
i´ve tried all the components on another computer and it works fine
    my voltages are
    cpu  - 1,65v
    +3.3 - 3,33
    +5.00 - 5,03
    +12.00 - 11,98
    -12.00 -  -11,70
    -5.00 -  -4,94
the other components are on my signature
i´m running my memos synchronous to cpu (fsb 166)
I tried raising memos voltages to 2.7 and still the same problems
    can anyone help?
    thanks

    Ok Richard!
I´ll buy a new one (artic silver maybe) and test here
Which is the best way to remove the old thermal grease on my cpu?
    thanks for all your replies

  • IMac i7 - Strange CPU-fan problem!

    Hi,
my name is Chris and I'm living in Germany. Sorry for my pigeon english, I'm not very good in languages... Nevertheless I will try to describe my problem.
I have received my iMac last saturday. It's an i7 with 2TB hard drive. On sunday suddenly the CPU-fan went nuts, spinning with about 3500 rpm. At that time there was no heavy CPU load at all.
Neither P-RAM- nor SMC-resets fixed the problem, the CPU-fan was running at full speed all the time. On monday morning (the i7 was switched during the night), the problem was still persisting. Hence, I contacted Apple and they promised to send me a replacement for the i7 in about three weeks.
Later on this monday, I received a package with additional 4GB of memory I had ordered for the iMac. Although the iMac was making noise comparable to a 747, I decided to build in the additional 4GB of RAM, just to play a bit around with an "8GB machine". The assembly of the additional memory was pretty easy, basically everything was working fine (memory wise). But the CPU-fan was still continuously at around 3500 rpm.
Afterwards, I decided to clean up the computer a bit by using the "automatic" script within "Onyx". I started the procedure and left the room.
When I came back about 1 hour later, there was total silence in the room. In first instance I wasn't surprised very much, because the iMac was obviously in the sleep mode. But I was really surprised when I woke it up again: The CPU- fan was back to normal, spinning with 940rpm. Almost completely silent.
Any ideas what happened? Can there be a connection between the "fan-went-nuts-issue" and the Onyx scripts?
What shall I do? My iMac is behaving now, but I have already ordered replacement...
    Best wishes,
    Chris

Yes, I have seen this thread, thank you.
When the CPU-fan started to spin at 3800, one of the first thing I tried was putting the iMac into the sleep mode. After I had done so, I woke it up back again almost immediately (about 1 minute later) by pressing the space bar. But for some reason, the iMac woke (with normal fan noise) and then immediately fall back into sleep (after being about 10 seconds awake). A "proper wake up" was not possible, since it was sort of an infinitely loop of waking up and falling asleep. A reboot via the power button was necessary, whereby the fan went back to 3800 rpm.
And then I performed this Onyx-run (as mentioned in my first post), and afterwards the iMac went to sleep mode automatically. It stayed in the sleep mode for about an hour or so, and after my next wake up call it was cured.
Really strange. Either it was cured by the maintenance-things Onyx did to the cache/system files, or by being in the sleep mode for about one hour. I also can't exclude influence of our Lord, since I was behaving in the last year...
Somehow I have lost my trust in that machine. Even after the fan went back to normal behavior I am still not sure if I should cancel the replacement order... I am open for recommendations from your side.
    Best wishes,
    Chris

  • Hot CPU Freezes MacBook Pro forcing hard restart

My MacBook Pro early 2011 13" freezes, requiring a hard restart when the CPU temperature stays in the 195 F (as measured by iStat nano) range for more than a few minutes.  The fans run appropriately.  I am running 16 GB of RAM, most of which is not being used during these 'hot' episodes (according to Activity Monitor).  Typically they happen when Mail is trying to connect to iCloud and can't seem to do it.  Then the spinning beach ball.  Can't force quit or restart from the Apple menu.  I'm using 10.7.4 on a dual core i7, 2.7 GHz unit. Any ideas for fixes?

    Try these:
    SMC/PRAM reset.
See what's loading in login items - delete the ones you don't want loading.
Check Activity Monitor and see what's using most of your cpu resources under all processes.
Once you've determined/see what using most of your CPU %, highlight it and hit quit process.
Once you've done that, do a disk verify then go on to do a verify disk permissions, repair if needed.
Do a restart and see if that helps.

  • CPU-Z shows "Processor model unknown"

I just installed a K9N2 Platinum with an AMD Phenom X4 940 Cpu, and both Vista and CPU-Z show the specification as "AMD Processor model unknown".
The CPU-Z does show the correct name, code name and package.
    The BIOS is AMI 3.2
Everything looks like it is working fine, I just want to know if this is indicating any problem or incorrect setup.
    Thanks,
    Ord

  • Strange cpu clock report DV7T 4100 CTO

just bought the DV7T 4100 CTO with a core i7-720qm processor (windows 7 64bit)... updated the bios to F.23. The strangest thing is that every single diagnostic software (CPU-z, Hardware Monitor, Intels T-monitor...etc...etc) reports my CPU as a 930Mhz on idle...although im sure its supposed to be 1600Mhz...
when i pump up prime 95... it reports 1750 Mhz ...            why is my CPU beeing reported as half the speed than it should be? (having intels turbo thingy in consideration here...)

    Ok...here's the main problem...
    the multiplier stays at x7 at idle (133 bus x 7 = 931Mhz)
when in turbo mode it goes up to x13 (checked it with TrotthleStop...x13 is the maximum supported multiplier)  which brings the CPU to 1729Mhz...
Problem 2. the temperature coresponds to the factory CPU values...since at 931 Mhz it stays at 50-55 C (sometimes 60)
while at 1729Mhz it climbs up to 80 C... which is what most people would get if they had their real clocks...
it almost seems as if the Bus speed or the multiplier value is reported divided by 2...            anyone know the benchmark CPU values of this (or a similar) model...so i can compare?
    Thanks in advance...
