Strange crashes, failure to wake from sleep..
My Pismo has begun to crash suddenly, or not wake up from sleep when I re-open the lid from a short period of being closed. Can anyone interpret for me what the console log for the last time it crashed is saying?
"Mac OS X Version 10.4.8 (Build 8L127)
2007-03-08 17:51:25 -0800
2007-03-08 17:51:27.380 loginwindow[146] FSResolveAliasWithMountFlags returned err = -43
2007-03-08 17:51:27.382 loginwindow[146] FSResolveAliasWithMountFlags returned err = -43"
Is there another crash log I should be looking for other than this one?
All help and advice much appreciated!
Anthony
PS No - I have not installed the latest Quicktime or iTunes updates.
For starters, go ahead and create a new user account and see if the problem occurs in the new user account.. that will eliminate wether it's system software or something else at cause.. let me know how that goes, and then we can troubleshoot further.

Etch A Sketch Problem - failure to wake from sleep mode
My iMac fails to recover from sleep mode. I have only noticed the problem when it has been left in sleep mode overnight. When I try to wake it, the last screen viewed appears. The mouse moves the cursor, but a trail of dark grey is made as you move the cursor. It operates much like an Etch A Sketch. When the power button is pressed, the log-in screen appears. After logging in, the iMac seems to operate properly. This just started last week. I haven't loaded any new programs. Has anyone else experienced this problem? What is the cause and a possible solution?

Is this problem happening to anybody else? Has anybody else encountered similar problems? I didn't install any new software or upgrades around the time this started happening.Any solutions to this problem? I too have this kernel panic, however it only happens about once a week. Always upon wake from sleep as you've indicated.
FYI I don't have intego software, or an APC installed. Nor am I using filevault.
This is on an up to date, MacBook Pro Retina.

MacBook Pro crashing and restarting on wake from sleep?
My MacBook Pro 17inch Late 2011 has started crashing and restarting on wake from sleep 3 out of 4 times. This is really interrupting my workflow and I need help to remedy it.
Here is about 2 minutes from the system log at the time of restart.
After looking at some other posts, this may be a spontaneous log-out, but I DO NOT have automatic log-out selected in security preferences.

Crashes after wake from Sleep after 10.8.1 update
2.5 Ghz Mac Mini (mid 2011), 8 Gigs of RAM
Since the day I upgraded to 10.8.1 I have had persistent crashes, 1 every 24 hours or so. It's always shortly after a wake from sleep. In all cases, it is impossible to switch to a random open application. But once I hit that application, no other application will respond to anything, including a Force Quit, or if it will force quit, it won't relaunch. A shut down will hang because an app refuses to quit. I can quit the Finder, but it won't relaunch. Have reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, zapped the PRAM, reset the SMC, checked and extensively tested the HD and RAM. Replaced RAM with original Apple RAM. Didn't help, so I swapped back to the RAM from Crucial. I can't think of anything else to try. Machine does not crash unless it has been asleep. Runs flawlessly when sleep is disabled. After a reboot (usually via a shut down via the power switch, start from scratch, check of the HD integrity, and then a clean restart) the machine will run fine, sleep and wake normally for about 24 hours. As near as I can tell from the logs, the hangs usually begin right after the Time Machine Backup after a wake from sleep finishes. If I don't allow the machine to sleep, there are no problems of any kind. Making me crazy. Did not occur under Lion or the .0 version of Mountain Lion. Is making me crazier than I normally am which is sorta serious.Any solutions to this problem? I too have this kernel panic, however it only happens about once a week. Always upon wake from sleep as you've indicated.
FYI I don't have intego software, or an APC installed. Nor am I using filevault.
This is on an up to date, MacBook Pro Retina.

Power Mac G4 Wake from Sleep Crash
I have been having wake from sleep issues since I installed Mac OS 10.5 on my Power Mac G4 three months ago. Technically, this machine is supported by Leopard: it's an 867 MHz G4 with 512 MB of RAM. And indeed, the Leopard installer allowed me to install fine, and while it runs slower than I'd like, it seems to run all the applications just fine. The major problem is that it does not properly wake from sleep. Nearly every time the machine wakes up from sleep, it crashes and needs to be rebooted. It may be a display issue -- the screen frequently looks corrupted when it has crashed -- but the console logs have not given me any clues. It does seem to be related to the amount of time that the machine has spent sleeping, but I have had it crash after a sleep of as little as a few minutes. I have a USB 2.0 PCI card installed, but removing that for a week didn't have any noticeable effect on the problem. I'm stumped, and preparing to downgrade to 10.4, as the machine takes too long to boot for me to live with the option of shutting down and starting up every time I use it.
I've been very happy with this machine for years and years and frankly I've never had this much of an issue with the Mac OS on an allegedly "supported" machine. As a last resort, I thought I'd ask here whether anyone has another idea that I can try.I'm having a similar problem, though with my Powerbook G4, since installing Leopard. It's a 1.5 Mhz model. Everything seems to work properly, but it takes 10 to 12 seconds to wake from sleep. When it is woken, it shows the old screen image and remains frozen for over 10 seconds, before displaying the updated screen and coming back to life. It seems to me that this pause is progressively getting longer. It was only a few seconds to start with, but is now over 10 seconds.
Any clues? -
This Intel iMac is about six years old, has had the motherboard replaced by Apple. Today we had an electrical failure, and it was asleep at the time. It refused to wake from sleep, and it seems to start up, but the screen stays black. I tried zapping the PRAM, shutting it down and turning off the surge protector, etc. . . and still, nothing. Any thoughts?
If http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) does not work and you are comfortable working in the Terminal, try the following:
Enter into the Terminal the following: sudo pmset autopoweroff 0 and sudo pmset standby 0
If you like the hibernation, you can switch it back on by re-entering the commands with 1's instead of 0's. You can even change the amount of time by adjusting "autopoweroffdelay" and "standbydelay". -
Late 2013 Mac Pro wake from sleep crashes - which logs to look at?
I started encountering wake-from-sleep crashes with my late 2013 Mac Pro a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that the system had been pretty solid. Other than app and OS updates installed from the App Store, I can't think of any software changes that might be responsible.
What logs should I be looking for that could be helpful in diagnosing the problem? Looking at other posts where people have been trying to diagnose similar issues I see people posting portions of panic logs that show which modules were loaded and might help point to a culprit, but I can't seem to find a log with a panic message in it.
I had thought I'd determined my Anker USB3 powered-hub was related to the crashes, as when I disconnected it from my system I went several days without a crash. Today I reconnected the hub with just a few devices on it and got a crash. I disconnected the devices but left the hub attached but got another crash. I then disconnected the hub again, assuming I'd proved it was the culprit, but the machine has now crashed twice without the hub attached.
I'm running OS 10.9.4. Looking at other reports people reported some specific programs that added kernel extensions that were suspected to be the problem, but I don't have any of those programs installed on my Mac. The problem doesn't happen every time I wake the machine, but has happened at least four times today alone (after about three days of no crashes.)These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway. -
Apps crashing on wake from sleep
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard on my 2008 unibody Macbook, I've been having wake-from-sleep issues. I'm hoping that someone will be able make sense of the crash logs
Sporadically, when I wake it from sleep, an app will crash, quit unexpectedly. The app will restart fine and run normally after that. It only happens occasionally, twice today, once yesterday, but not for a week before that. The apps involved so far have been Safari 4.03, Mail 4.1, Textedit 1.6, and activity Monitor 10.6, as well as Dashboard client.
The crash log doesn't help me because I don't really know what to look for. I eliminated several of background processes that were mentioned in some of the early crash logs. Permissions repair, disk repair, and Apple Hardware test all negative.
Has anyone else been having problems like this?

I thought that it was maybe the upgrade install type so I wiped the HD and did a clean install but still had the same problem with iTunes, Skype, Google Notifier, Safari and Net News Wire continually crashing after sleep.
Under advice I tried a SMC reset but this did not help either.
Today I called apple care and they suggested a PRAM reset, after a couple of hours testing the problem seems to be fixed.
To do a PRAM reset on a late 2008 MacBook.....
1. Power off the MacBook (shutdown)
2. Unplug mains power lead
3. Count to 10
4. Plug the mains power lead back in
5. Press the power button to start the MacBook
6. Immediately press and hold down the CMD, ALT, P and R keys
7. You will hear the startup chime then the screen will go off (keep holding the keys)
8. You will hear the startup chime again then the screen will go off (keep holding)
9. You will hear the startup chime a third time
10. Now release the keys and let the MacBook startup
11. Hopefully no more crashes after sleep
Hope this works for you

Envy X2 Won't Wake From Sleep / Crashes on Restart
HI There,
I have an Envy X2 Product number: C8C42PA#ABG. If left to sleep for a few mins, it will not wake and needs to be restarted by holding down the power button for 5 secs and then presseing power once more.
Also, when restarting, as it starts to shutdown, it shows the normal windows 8 restarting message for about 10 minutes and then gives a Driver Power State Failure message and shutsdown.
System bios is F.12 andI've updated all drivers from the support web site.I've alsotried different anti-virus and no antivirus. I'm not suing Google Talk.
Any advice wouldbe appreciated.
JohnProblem solved by some Windows update - there were 53 that ran and after rebooting I could wake from sleep.

MAC AIR Crashes on wake from sleep
Dear All,
I have a user's Mac Air exhibiting the ubiquitous 'wake from sleep' issue that seems to have reared its head at every OS since 10.2, increasingly occurring with or without various apps running at time of sleep.
Upon tapping space bar after a night's sleep, we get a login screen with sometimes the desktop background, sometimes black, but always with the login panel available but tantalisingly NO blinking cursor or ability to enter password into the box for logging in.
Solution even after 20-40 mins (user is a patient person :-) is to press and hold the power button.
Syslog examination upon reboot shows nothing at all for the corresponding time period, just the info pertaining to the hard reboot.
...This last fact makes me think it is below the OS level and to do with the SSD power management / SMC / firmware relevant to both the above - if I am correct, after a couple of hours sleeping, as the laptop considers it is now in deep sleep, the contents of RAM get written to the SSD.
So, upon wake up calls from peripherals or built in mouse/trackpad, IF it cannot load the data written to the (still sleeping??) SSD back into RAM, then of course logging in will present a problem ?
I'd love to finally get to understand this completely, especially as it has occurred with all recent versions of the MAC OS, and on pretty much all hardware (acc to google).
Like many of us over the years, with previous OS versions' wake-from-sleep issues I have just taken the varying anecdotal advice (run /sbin/fsck/ -f/y, or fix permissions, or reset PRAM / SMC / trash windowserver prefs / apply combo update etc etc etc, turn around three times and kiss a back issue of Mac User magazine) and moved on...
.... this time, with yet another OS version, this annoyingly prevalent bug undermines my enthusiasm for continuing with Apple (I rely heavily on various remote access apps and having a non-local machine not wake up for me could be be a huge issue).
Anyone delved deep into this one and come back with an answer ?
Currently I am toying with using terminal to remove the hibernation aspect of sleep ..
Show settings:
pmset -g
Change:
sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0
or, change aspects of it.
I am distressed though that the famously user friendly (and my personal favourite) OS has me resorting to its equivalent of the command line just to get a user's laptop to reliably wake from sleep - it's 2014 and this should have been sorted soooo many moons ago.
Thanks for reading,
Andy

Twist BIOS 1.65 wake from sleep causes port replicator failure
Recently, I updated my Thinkpad Twist to BIOS 1.65. After the update, my Targus ACP70US USB 3.0 port replicator / dock (video, audio, Ethernet, USB hub) would not reconnect after waking from sleep. Unplugging and reconnecting the USB connector would do nothing. The only way to get the port replicator to work was to do a full reboot. I'm running Windows 8.1 x64.
I can confirm that this is a new problem specific to BIOS 1.65. Downgrading to BIOS 1.63 resolved the issue--the port replicator works fine & wakes from sleep properly with this BIOS revision. And yes, the Targus dock has the newest firmware & the Windows drivers for it are current...
I didn't bother trying to see if any other USB device would fail in this way or if it's something to do with this specific Targus device...
Maybe the following change may have something to do with the regression: - (Fix) Fixed an issue the computer might not resume normal operation from suspend state.Albert, go to http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032000 , which is the download site for the latest BIOS update. Scroll near the bottom of the page and you will find all the previous versions of the BIOS files that you can download. Just select the file and it should begin to download.

Sudden strange behavior---monitor rez & DSL modem after wake from sleep??
Awright. Been running 10.4.5 on DP G5 2.5 for about a month now. Nothing changed, or nothing installed in last couple weeks when last couple days--
-wake from sleep, one of my 2 monitors has changed resolutions by it self
-even more stange, my 2Wire DSL wireless, (I'm hardwired to it, wife's iBook
connects thru AirPort) shows 'no Local Network'.
When I restart, everything's back to normal and working. So...why would everything be fine for 3 weeks or so, and with no new installs, or changes to system, this stuff start happening?
Yes, repaird permissions, DiscWarrior, and booted in Safe boot mode, and re-installed combo updater 4.5 2 times, and repaired permissions.
Same thing.
Ideas?
Thanks,
p2
G5 DP 2.5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)Very odd indeed. Open your Console (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Console) and hit "Clear" on console.log. Put the Mac to sleep and wake it, and paste what's there in a reply. Then reset your settings and do the same for system.log. This should give us an idea of what's happening.
Thanks,

Mac Pro Failed to wake from sleep
Hello All,
I've had my Mac Pro since Aug. 2007. Never had any problems of any kind until this morning.
To wake from sleep (as I always do): depressed arrow key (10:43 AM). There was a delay - then the spinning beach ball for about 2 min. I did a hard shutdown, waited a bit, then restarted at 10:52 AM. Boot up was (as always) quick.
I logged into my (usual) non-admin account and observed:
When all start up items were loaded: Finder windows appeared approximately as follows:
1. A window showing the (not sure of proper term) "internal folders" of main boot up volume.
2. A window showing the internal folders stored on my mirrored RAID back up disk(s)
3. A window showing the internal folders of my bootable back up.
4. A window showing all 3 disk icons[ Main boot, Bootable backup and the RAID].
I closed all of these windows. [Didn't think too much about it but it's not normal to have these widows appear] SO -
Next:
Then I logged out and logged into my admin account to check the system log with console.
It showed an event from last night which I could not interpret but it did not appear to reveal serious problems (something about not being able to make network connection).
But - the second item on the System Log showed the "wake from sleep" sequence (at 10:43 AM).
I'm going to post the entire wake from sleep log below but first I'll state what was obvious to me:
Startup of CPU #1, #2 and #3 appear first - there is NO #4 CPU!
The log for the manual startup at 10:52 showed some apparent problems as I note below.
Next: Once logged in as admin - I launched Activity Monitor just to assure myself that all four CPUs were at least registering - and they were / are.
Hoping someone here can more thoroughly analyze this log report and give me an idea of the cause of the failure to waken.
Naturally, I won't want to put the Mac Pro to sleep again until I'm sure this isn't a "permanent" problem requiring further action (including service, of course).
Also noticed a statement about some app not having correct permissions (apparently at the System level) and something about removing several orphaned files. There's a warning about CarbonCopyCloner scheduled tasks as well. But there my understanding ends.
Thanks in advance:

==== end====Hello Alexandre,
First - thank you very much for taking time to offer thorough and informed advice.
However - as indicated in my last post, I have performed the first (and very basic) "test" - I checked to see if Xgrid was included in my network prefs and found that it was. I unchecked it because I don't have the setup to make use of processor resources on the other Mac I have in my home network. (And that other Mac is an old G4 eMac - not much help anyway!)
More specifically: it's apparent that I was using Xgrid "inappropriately" so I think the System Log really indicates that no connection can be found -because there isn't one!
I too still wonder about the "missing CPU 4" but, overall, I see no other indications that there's a problem. Activity Monitor shows all four CPU cores and they're all showing activity. I have not seen (or noticed) this in prior System Log reports so, if I see this again - I'll renew efforts to find it's significance and take appropriate action.
I then put my Mac Pro to sleep, waited a bit, then depressed an arrow key: the machine woke from sleep normally. This "solves" the immediate problem of abnormal wakening - at least I'm satisfied that it does and will continue monitoring for any similar "misbehaviors."
Power Management: I have purposely avoided doing anything with Power Management once I had it set to my liking. That is, I set the screen to sleep in 1 hour, I set the hard drive to "never" (sleep) and only use the Sleep menu command to put the Mac Pro to sleep. My dictum is to "not fix what isn't proved to be broken." Again - if I continue to have problems or new problems crop up, I will then go ahead and start making changes such as those you mention. (Like deleting com.apple.PowerManagemetn.plist)
Next: I did already run permissions repair and may do so again anytime I see problems which could be connected to permissions. Since I have "taken Xgrid" out of the picture, I don't think this particular permissions issue is going to be a problem under my current set up.
CarbonCopyCloner: Here we have a bit of a conundrum. I need! to keep CCC "available" to run scheduled back up tasks. I was given (a very expensive) 1TB wireless backup drive for Xmas and - through long trial and error - found that CCC is the most appropriate back up application for that drive.
For now: I consider that the problem is a bug in CCC and will contact Mr. Bombich about this.
Again: I do appreciate your pointing out this and the other things. You have helped me think through what could have been a very complex process in trouble shooting.
I think that my issue turned out to be simple: I may have accidentally touched the wrong key or key combination when I moved to wake the Mac Pro from sleep. I think that Xgrid was a problem but that now seems to be eliminated. The Mac Pro is now waking normally - which was my original objective.
Oh, and just to be clear: I forgot to mention above that I did re-examine the System Log and there are now no signs of the items in the log I posted originally here. -
MacBook Pro display sometimes does not wake from sleep, display is blank
My computer has been getting a lot of this weird issue that it is asleep, the light is pulsing. But when you go to wake it up, the keyboard lights up, caps light key will work, but the display is blank, nothing makes it turn back on.
I had a friend using it who I let use the guest account, but since the issue kept happening and all the guest account data kept disappearing, I had to create her an account. It's annoying, and sometimes if I catch the crash happening while the unit is display active, I get the color wheel and all the apps freeze up really bad. I'm lucky if I can save my work.
Sleep during this crash will also produce the error. Most recently I was trying to connect my bluetooth keyboard and it kept giving me an error. So I tried to turn off the bluetooth, no dice. Went into the root user, still no dice. Figured maybe the device didn't get reinitialized upon wake from sleep properly, put the unit to sleep and ding dong, wont wake up again!
From the console logs I've been able to find this string:
5/23/10 1:00:54 PM kernel Sleep failure code 0x00000000 0x21000000
I've not used any hacks or sleep widgets, so I don't know what the issue is.
Everytime I reboot from this I fsck the drive and repair permissions. I've tried zapping the PRAM also, next stop is delete the power management plist and reset the SMC. Who knows if any of it will work?
Anyone have any ideas?dchrem wrote:
The machine is stock from Apple, it's a replacement for a previous machie try screwed up repairing which itself was a replacement for a machine that they couldn't get the part for, for over a month. Thank God for AppleCare!
AppleCare is the magic word. Time to contact them.
Btw the machine is 10.6.3 I hadn't updated my settings before I posted the initial question.
I was actually going to suggest that, but noticed in your later posts you had updated the info.
As for the smc and pram both were done today, so we will see what the story is. I also deleted the energy .plist file and had it recreated from within root.
Just curious why you're working in root? You should be able to do anything we've discussed from an admin account, and there's lots of potential for mishaps in root.
As for dlrunning DU, I was under the impression that it just ran fsck through the DU GUI. At least that's what it looks like when you view the console log for DU. I'll give it a try though.
I'm just repeating what Apple suggests.
I'm just worried that the little glitches are adding up to something catastrophic.
AppleCare.
