Strange discoloration or off-colour when a drop shadow applied to a shape.

Hey there,
I'm in the very early stages of a logo design and I've applied a drop shadow to a triangle shape. When I export to an eps file I get the problem below. Is there any reason for this? I'm very new to illustrator and I'm sure it's something simple. I hope so!!!

You can also try cretig the shadow with a blend instead.

  • Indd 5.5: When using drop shadow or lower opacity in object, I lose fills

I have ugraded to InDesign 5.5 (v. 7.5) for Mac OS. Here is my problem: If I have object "A" with transparency (lower than 100% opacity) or a drop shadow (which also uses a transparency) overlapping object "B", then "B" loses it fill when printing to a Xerox Phaser 7760GX. The fills appear  fine when exporting to a pdf and when printing from the pdf. They also appear fine when printing on BW HP printer (sans the color, of course).
The file performs the same when I open on other computers with their own InDesign application. One of my colleagues has updated v. 7.5.1  but still has same problem.
    So far, I have:
exported to IDML file and reopened the file in InDesign 5.5
    purged all inDesign preferences
    downloaded latest printer driver
following Adobe troubleshooting instructions, isolated the Transparency as the cause
(when setting spread flattening to None in the pages flyout menu, my fills return, but of course the drop shadow/transparency is disabled)
    Any ideas?

Some printers just don't get along well with ID. Exporting PDF and printing that is the normal workaround.

  • Flicker when using drop shadow with edge feather

I have encountered a new problem with FCP 5.1.2. When using edge feather and drop shadow together, I encounter a flicker around the edge of the feathered video image. This flicker goes away if I remove the drop shadow. I read in an earlier post that the 5.02 update solved this problem. However, I am using version 5.1.2 and the sugestion to reajust the percentage of the effect and then back to the original percentage, doesn't work. I have used the edge feather, drop shadow combo many times in earlier versions of FCP with no problem. Fixes anyone?
I posted this months ago with no reply so I'm trying again. Anyone with any thoughts? I really don't like having to resort to creating the drop shadow in Photoshop.

What I am trying to do is very simple. I want to soften the edges of an image and give it a drop shadow. This "image" could be a scaled and cropped DV source, or it could be a photoshop file. This is something I have done routinely in previous versions of FCP without any problem. This is very basic. I have opened earlier projects that were edited in those earlier versions of FCP, and what looked fine then, looks horrible now. If others are not having this problem, can I assume my software upgrade is defective in some way?
Please, if someone would perform the following and report back, I would greatly appreciate it.
1- import two DV video files into a new FCP project.
2- place DV file "A" on the V1 track
3- create a V2 track and place DV file "B" over DV file "A"
4- scale DV file "B" to 50% and apply a 100% Edge Feather to it.
5- now check the Drop Shadow box
This will look fine on your computer screen, but when viewing on an external monitor the edges of DV file "B" flicker in a terribly annoying way.
Something this simple and basic shouldn't be causing this much pain. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Unwanted drop shadow showing up on shape objects - BUG?

    Hi all,
I am currently using photoshop cc 2014 and pasting vector objects in as a "Shape Layer" - for some reason a shadow is showing up around every object i create since i upgraded to cc 2014 but it is NOT a layer style. How do i remove this? is it a graphics issue or processor issue? Does anyone know the settings to allow me to create shapes with sharp edges?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm running into a similar problem. I've pasted a shape from illustrator as a vector smart object. When I have a green rectangle below it, there is no drop shadow. But when I hide that layer, the drop shadow clearly shows above the white background.
It appears to be controlled by the global light under layer styles, but I can't turn it off even when "Drop Shadow" is unclicked.
Drop shadow clearly showing, even when it's unclicked in Layer Style.
No Drop Shadow showing when there is a green rectangle underneath.
Drop Shadow appears over white Background when the green rectangle is turned off.
Drop Shadow appears to be controlled by Global Light, but there seems to be no way of turning it off.
What am I missing here? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

  • Drop shadow turns to hard shape in high resolution?

I have a drop shadow that looks fine when the document raster effects is set at 72 dpi, but at anything higher turns into a hard shape with no blur/shading. Is this a memory issue, and is there a workaround for it? Thanks for any ideas.

The Gaussian Blur was rewritten for CS6 and should probably be similar in CC. Your screen shots did not get properly attached. Can you try again to attach them using the Camera icon in the reply window tool bar?

  • Using InDesign CS6, why does a drop shadow applied to a text box, cause a photo on the same page to

I thought it was just a screen appearance so I made a pdf and the photo is lighter here too.  I've never had this issue with CS5.5 or earlier.  Drop shadows were able to be applied to one object without affecting others on the page. Is it a bug? Is there a setting I'm missing?  Thanks!

Overprint preview didn't stop the lightening of the photo.
A google search turned up the suggestion to change the transparency blend space to RGB, which worked in InDesign.  When I make the pdf (no color conversion) it looks ok. But when turning on Output Preview in Acrobat, the photo lightens again.  Weird and frustrating - I'm not sure what the final output will look like.
Is Transparency Flattener set at High res an option?
    I appreciate your help!

  • How do I get drop shadows to work correctly when using HTML5 to publish?

When publishing this course in HTML 5, drop shadows applied to smart shapes go a little haywire. What settings can I update on these objects to make them appear correctly?  Thanks for your help!
    Object settings:
    White solid fill, opactiy 100%
    1pt stroke
    Standard publish to web broswer:
    Publishing in HTML5:

Looks like the shadow is being applied to the outline. Smart shapes are drawn with canvas in HTML5 so you'd need to hackinto the code to try and fix it. You could try an outline with no fill on top of the shape with the text, white background, no outline and apply the shadow to that smart shape. Group the objects for convenience.

  • Help, Drop Shadow filter with strange glares in CS4

    Hi,
I've made a symbol for a logo design in Ai CS4 in wich I applyed some Drop Shadows to some elements (white arrows).
The problem is, when I enlarge the symbol (approximately 110 x110 mm), strange glares/"ghosts" appear around the elements that have the Drop Shadow applied to.
There are no Pantones in this, just CMYK colors.
    See the image please: http://www.grabup.com/uploads/01773c95e72416002699e3d3e4800428.png
(the strange glares/ghosts are the ones pointed by the red arrows, the Drop Shadow dialog box, corresponds to the red highlighted white arrow on the left with the blue drop shadow.)
When I turn to Outline mode there are no vector paths there, so it only shows this glares/ghosts in normal/preview mode.
This only happens when I enlarge this elements, and the Blur (in the drop shadow) begins to have a large number applied to it (example: blur: 9 mm).whn I Rasterize or Expand Appearance the elements with this drop shadows, the rasterized image maintains the strange glares/ghosts.
    The glare/ghosts completely disappear when:
    - I reduce the size of the logo/symbol;
    - In the Drop Shadow dialog box: Instead of the Color, I choose Darkness (but I need this to have a blue color in shadows not grey/black).
    - In the Drop Shadow dialog box: I reduce the size of the Drop Shadow Blur (with 5mm or less of Blur, the glare/ghosts vanish)
    Is this a Illustrator bug?
The only solution for this is to reduce the amount of Blur aplyed to the drop shadows elements?
If so, what happens when I have to enlarge this logo to a bigger size, say... an Outdoor?
    thank you!
    (sorry for my english)

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your reply (very prompt!)
Yes I read that article and thankfully was already exporting using Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) so that wasn't an issue.
So now I'm waiting on the printer's reply as I've emailed him a link to that article!

  • Pie chart drop shadows not printing properly.. cuts off right hand side of pie chart...???

Every time I go to print a pie chart that has a drop shadow applied to it, it cuts off the right hand side of the chart along with the shadow itself.  It looks HORRIBLE!!!  I went through and created a bunch of reports using that method, and now ALL of them have this problem.  It makes ZERO sense to me, and it appears that nobody else is experiencing this.  Does anybody have any ideas?

  • Line appears when applying drop shadow on large scale

    Hello!
Some weeks ago I had to make a large scale graphic (800mmx2000mm) for a roll-up banner. I wanted to apply a drop shadow to a rounded shape, and ugly lines came up. Since it was a bit urgent, I decided not to use it.
But now I'm curious, so I quickly made an ellipse and added a shadow, so you know what I mean. This also happens when I save it as pdf or image.
Perhaps someday I will have to use a drop shadow on large scale. So, does anybody knows how to fix this or what could I do in case I need to use this effect in these conditions? I use Illustrator CS6 in Mac with Mavericks.
    Thanks in advance.

I was able to create an ellipse to your dimension and got a good drop shadow. What happens if you manually make a drop shadow using appearance?
FYI I tried making the same using drop shadow filter in CS5 and got this error.
Incase your file was created in CS5 and opened in 6, I would recreate the drop shadow in CS6. I know they redid the gaussian blur in CS6, but not sure if that affected drop shadow.
CS6 is better on raster effects at large sizes.
My file was created and opened in CS6.
My ellipse is around 175cmx50cm. I tried it manually like you said and got the same results:
So, I guess I'm alone with such a problem. No idea what is wrong :/

  • Odd greyscale behavior when drop-shadow is applied.

I have a file with four images in it. One is RGB and three are greyscale jpeg images. They all look fine.
Now, when I put a drop-shadow effect on the images, the RGB image looks as expected; but, the greyscale images all look lighter than before.
I exported a PDF of the two pages (I made a duplicate so one page has the shadow and one does not) with the PDF-X/1a profile. All of the greyscale images look lighter, even the page without the shadow, which looks darker in InDesign. The RGB image looks the same on both pages an in the PDF.
Why do the greyscale images look lighter when a drop-shadow is applied? Or, maybe a better question is, why does the image without the drop shadow look darker? (The darker image looks more natural. I opened the Greyscale images in both Apple's Preview and in Photoshop. Preview displays the nicer-looking darker image, but Photoshop shows the images as being lighter, the way it looks in the exported PDF.
    Any ideas?

Thank you for this interesting discussion.
I set the Transparency Blend Space to RGB* and now all of the grayscale images look the same. They have all taken on the darker appearance. Until, of course, when I turn Overprint Preview on, in which case they all get lighter. In Photoshop, the image seems to be in-between the light and dark looks in ID.
You know, up until today, I was feeling pretty good about color on the computer, thinking all the problems of the past were behind us. Oh well!
Anyway, I have another question about Transparency Flattener Presets. It is set to Low by default in ID. I suppose this is to speed up rendering time. Now, when I export to a PDF there is a Transparency Flattener setting there, if the PDF is an X-1a file. In that case, does ID ignore the setting in the file under the Edit menu?
Also, I set the Transparency Flattener Preset in ID to High, but it always returns to Low when I check again. Why is this? (The Low, Medium, and High settings are surrounded by brackets, like this: [Low]. Does that mean anything?) So, what  does the Transparency Flattener Settings affect? A print made directly from the file? The preview in ID? I thought I had all this down, but now I am a little confused.
*(BTW, this piece will be used as an outdoor poster on a kiosk and the media company has requested an RGB JPEG file, so I will be exporting this as a PDF-X/4 and then opening it in Photoshop before saving it as a JPEG. So, I know, the best thing to do is to convert the grayscale images as RGB files and maybe even adding a little tint, perhaps. But I am still curious about the other questions.)

  • Master page objects with drop shadows crossing over spreads

    Mac 10.5.4 - INDesign CS3
I have a book file that is giving me a pretty hard time. There are several master page spreads that do not show as spreads in the book file. The left page from one set of masters with the right page from another set. There is a grouped row of circles that has drop shadow applied that appears on several master spreads. This is built as two groups that meet in the gutter to give the appearance of a row all the way across the spread. When the group is on the gutter between the two pages of the master spread, The object will show up on the both pages of the book spread, on top of the data from the left page master. If we shut off the drop shadow, no problem. If we move the group 0p5 away from the gutter no problem. The problem is that in the end we want this element to have a drop shadow and to run into the gutter.
Does InDesign count the spread of the object effect as part of the object itself? That seems like what is happening. Is there a fix (work around) for this?

The easiest workaround I know of is to paste the object with the drop shadow inside another box such that you can clip it at the gutter. We've cursed this "feature" for years.

  • Illustrator CS6 crashes using Effect Stylize Drop Shadow. There's a work-around

Illustrator CS6 crashes when using Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow on a regular shape e.g. rectangle created by the Ractangle Tool.
I select the shape, apply the effect and it will crash giving this warning dialog: "The operation cannot complete of an unknown error: [CANT]". Then Illustrator CS6 crashes.
This is the crash report in Windows 7 32-bit:
Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 16.0.0.682, time stamp: 0x4f6e762b
Faulting module name: MMXCore.8BX_unloaded, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f44e8d6
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
The crash happens about 90% of the time.
    Possible work-around:
Since I experienced some strange behaviour of CS6 applications before, I experimented witn running Illustrator as an administrator (elevated privileges). When I do that, I can apply the effect without Illustrator CS6 crashing. Here I go again..elevated privileges (see http://forums.adobe.com/message/4432510) .
I have to admit, this is one of the many strange behaviours in CS6 applications that make their performance and reliability very unpredictable.
    Cheers,

Because there's no need to do a "repair permissions" thing, that being a bizarre Apple concept.  In Windows, the software installation neither "sets permissions properly" nor does previously installed software "change your system" (whatever that means).  Windows installation packages run under a special account to copy files into their proper directories without having to "change system properties".  It's all done automagically and managed by Windows, not by individual applications.

Like I said, all of that makes no sense on Windows.

The problems I described happen because software developers (and the Q&A testing teams) have an arrogant attitude -- they think "I'm the King of my computer and, by God, I'm going to run my computer as the most powerful user I can be."  So they do all their work under the elevated privileges of an administrator account, and are completely surprised and clueless when their software fails to run under a standard user account.  (Always running one's computer under the reduced privileges of a standard user account, by the way, is the recognized Best Practice for safe computing; and in these times it is now unacceptable to require elevated privileges to run an application....)

  • Add drop shadow to vector map

    Hi,
I have troubles in adding a drop shadow to a vectorized map (in *.ai format).
All countries are separated by a white thin line, so that it is possible to highlight a certain country of interest in another colour.
When these countries have been selected, I would like to add a drop shadow under the map outlines, ie under each continent.
But everytime I try to do so, the drop shadow also gets under each country.
My guess is that I have to group the countries within a continent or something else, but I fail each time I try.
    Does anybody have a clue?!
    Many thanks in advance
    Annika

    Annika,
    What happens if you:
    1) Select all countries in the continent and copy to the back (Ctrl/Cmd+C+B);
    2) Pathfinder>Merge the copy;
    3) Effects>Stylize>Drop Shadow applied to the merged copy?
