Strange Display Phenomenon

I have a Dual 2.5Ghz Power Mac G5 and a 30" Cinema Display. The Power Mac G5 was out of order for quite a while but I just had it fixed. When it was out of order, I could not boot into OS X. But when the display did show something, like the Apple Hardware Test screen, the display began to dim progressively, first from top, and then from bottom. Finally my Power Mac G5 was sent to a local Apple-authorized service provider, which had all hardware checked. But now the display still dims progressively, first from top and then from bottom. I ran Apple Hardware Test again and everything was shown to be OK, including the display card. I tried to connect the display with my MacBook Pro instead, and there is no dimming. I wonder what the problem is...

There is something funny. Originally I bought my G5 and the 30" Cinema Display in Japan, where the voltage is 100. Later on I moved back to Hong Kong and had the set shipped to this city, where the voltage is about 240, I guess. To be on the safe side, I always used an additional transformer so that I could use the original 100V plugs supplied by Apple. But when the 30" Cinema Display began to dim erratically, I used the local third-party 240 power cord and plug instead, without using an additional transformer. Suddenly something occurred to me and I tried to use the original Apple 100V power cord and plug. Then everything became alright! No more erratic dimming on the screen. I wonder why...

  • Very strange color phenomenon - Please help!

    Hello,
I just got a new iMac and moved all my software and files via firewire account transfer from my Mac Book to the new Mac. Everything works well, as expected, but when I open my Domain.sites2 File (I have iWeb08) on the iMac, a strange color phenomenon occurs: Identical colors specified for page background and placed shapes on the background look differently in iWeb, but when published, they look the same.
When I open the identical file on my Mac Book, the colors look the same (and publish the same of course). I've tried deleting the color shapes and creating them new, changing background color back and forth, but still: a color applied to the background of a page and a shape ontop of that page looks dramatically different. A purple looks intensive in the background, that same purple applied to a shape looks a lot mor pastell-ish and light, almost as if the color was converted to cmyk when applied to the shape, and left in vibrant RGB in the background.
Now this means that on the iMac in iWeb I cannot edit my site any more. I don't see what I do. If I make the colors for page background and shapes look identical in iWeb (or even specify identical color values), and publish, they look differently in the browser (I checked in multiple browsers).
I checked everthing for hidden transparency or cmyc conversion options that might be accidentally selected but can't find anything. I changed my monitor color settings, but that doesn't seem to be it, either.
What is happening to the color and why do colors on shapes look different than color in the background? Help. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Petra

Could be that monitor gamma, when calibrating the monitor, is different on old and new system.
Not that it should matter, but both browsers and iWEB handles colors in strange ways and sometimes use the Monitor color profile instead of for instance the sRGB color profile.

  • Strange Display Errors with certain Applications (ATI X1600) [SOLVED]

    Hi everyone!
I have been using Arch now for a year or so and am very happy with it, but now there is a problem I unfortunately can't solve by my own.
Since a month or so certain applications (like emacs, feh or gimp, if i try to manipulate the drawing surface) cause very strange display errors. When I try to take a screenshot, they can't be seen, so i made to photographs
    Image 1 (one instance of emacs under awesome-wm): http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/5186 … 112158.jpg
    Image 2 (two instances of emacs under awesome-wm): http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/822/im … 112158.jpg
I already tried another display manager (musca) but there the same applications cause the same type of error.
Maybe the version 6.14.0-1 of xf86-video-ati broke my system, but I don't know.
Has anyone had similar problems or probably a solution?
    Thanks in advance
    Maak

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2009), strange display problem

    Hello everybody,
This is my first post here, so thanks everybody who will read my post.
In February 2010 I bought two MacBook Pro 13 inch, for me and my girlfriend. Both of them are still working awesome, just one of them seems to develop a problem. I will try to detail it here, just that it's pretty strange even to explain.
When I look close to the screen, in seems that the colors in the images (web page elements, photos and so on) are not smooth (when changing from one color to other) rather they have very sharp edges. Next, when I look at the open menus (ex. the Apple menu in the left corner) it has some horizontal tiny lines. More, when I move the mouse over some elements (like the icons in the bar) some small square appears (like a net). I did reload the Mac and I was able to stop the same small squares over the Mac logo while booting. They are bearly visible, but for sure are there as I compare with the other Mac which has no such problems. This small squares net can be seem all over desktop and it seems that it flickers at around 2 seconds (there, not there, there...)
I know that it may be hard for you to understand, so later I will try to add a screen capture, if you don't understand my issue.
I do not have this issue if I connect an external monitor! So, I don't believe is from the graphic card / chipset.
If anybody encounter this kind of problems please give me an advice. Please consider the following:
    - I'm pretty good with technical stuff, so don't be shy to give technical details
    - I don't have Apple Care
    - I have been already to two authorized centres (I live in quite a small town in Austria); one told me that they will open in 3-4 months, the other told me that they can send it to Vienna, but it will take about a month and will be very expensive around 700-750 euro (aprox. 800-850$). How they know it will be expensive if they don't know the issue?!. I assume that they mean full replacement of the display, but in this case I would rather sell it for spare parts and buy a newer one
    - There is another authorized repairing centre at about 60 km from my city, I will try to make them a visit tomorrow, still I would glad if somebody can give me a hint.
    - As I extended the memory in my Mac (2GB to 4GB) I know the layout inside the unibody case, just if you want to tell me to check some cables (btw, this with the memory upgraded is the one working, the other one was never opened or technically touched in any way).
Thank you all  and have a nice day!

OK, if anybody is curious, here is the outcome. I took the device to an Apple authorized repairing center and they told me that the display it's the problem. I didn't get details (but I'll ask when I'll pickup my device) if the LCD was damaged, or some cables, but they said the whole display need to be replaced.
The prices (in Euro, but you can make the conversion)
    - the initial checkup and problem identification: 80 Euro (I have to pay this only if I choose not to repair the device at their service)
    - the repairing (display + work): 500 Euro
Not to happy to pay such an amount of money but what can I do?
Nevertheless I want to believe that this was somehow bad luck, as I have more than four Apple devices that run just fine.
    Best regards,
    Calin

  • Mac Pro has strange display problems

    Hello,
i have a strange problem with my new Mac Pro.
since maybe 1 week the 2 TFT Displays, connected to the nvidia Geforce 7300 GT went black for 2-5 seconds. The 2 Screens display "No signal" during that time.
Is there a way to test my GFX Card ?
any other ideas howto debug that problem at all ?
I am in warranty, but from my point of view, iwant to check first myself, if there is a method to do so.
    Best regards
    fidel

    Hi,
i am going to test the One display test. Thx for this idea
    Regarding Monitor Model:
    ViewSonic, VX 924
    http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/de/Products/LCDX/VX924.htm
Both monitors are connected directly, without any adapters. So no sub-d, only DVI usage.
    Regarding AHT:
Is it supposed to check GFX cards too ?
    Regarding SMC/PRAM/NVRAM:
I am kinda new to OS X. Could you explain me that in a more detailed way please ?
    Regarding 101:
Cant find that point in the 101 page
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
thank you very much for the input so far, i am going to test the things, could take some time as i am away for some weeks now. Thank you both.
    best regards

  • Strange Display Bug - Photoshop CS5 64bit

I have an issue where a portion of my screen extending from the top left corner displays images in Photoshop just a little differently than the rest of the screen. You can see how it looks in these screenshots (I was a little surprised the screenshots captured the bug). These are screens of a photoshop document filled with one color, not the two shades it appears to be.
    http://i.imgur.com/RzWei.png
    http://imgur.com/NadQA
This bug doesn't appear except in Photoshop. As you can tell it's always the same part of the screen. Except somehow Photoshop briefly 'remembers' where the image bug is when I drag it around with the hand too. Eventually it goes back to the original spot or it will reset to there when I zoom or do something to the image. You can see in the screens how that works.
I have tried clearing out the settings files.
    Reinstalling Photoshop.
    Updated display drivers.
I connected to the monitor to another computer and ran Photoshop from that one (no bug).
I attached another monitor to this computer - no bug with that monitor. Strangely, it seemed to take a few minutes to reappear after I reattached my other monitor again. I thought it had gone away at first.
I've done some searching around the web and the forums but can't seem to find the right answers. It would be great is someone had some ideas on what's going on. This problem is driving me batty. Thanks much.

Hm, seems to stop exactly halfway across, left to right, and in a 5:4 ratio.
Looks like a pretty big display...  What's the pixel resolution of your monitor?  Does it use a dual-link DVI connection?
Do you have any desktop management software active that does things like expand the desktop or provide multiple / virtual desktops?  I'm trying to guess at whether something might be causing the system metrics to be reported wrongly.
Just on a hunch, try this:  Choose Edit - Preferences - Performance, click the [Advanced Settings...] button, and change the OpenGL Mode to Basic.
If no change, does the problem go away if you uncheck [ ] Use OpenGL Drawing entirely?

The phone is always in the socks and it never fall down.

    Please help me.

    hello italian friend!
the people who sold you the device, upon looking at it and realizing it has a defect, should provide you a replacement one, no need to waste too much time and energy trying to get in touch with Apple! After all, you are under warranty through your contract with your cell phone provider first and foremost!
    Good luck

  • Very strange display problem just started

Hi ... I'm wondering if anyone can help with a strange problem I've just started to experience.
I'm running Win XP via Bootcamp. All had previously worked absolutely fine -- until today. Whenever I boot into Windows, I get past the welcome screen, my desktop appears for about 1-2 seconds, then -- boom -- goes black.
Totally black screen -- no cursor or anything.
Windows is still running, I can tell -- and if I press keys, I know they are working still (eg. can still shut down/restart through key combos). But the display is totally gone.
I'd used Boot Camp without problems yesterday -- but the last thing I did was shut down and install updates. So presumably something in the latest windows update has clobbered the display in some way. But I have no idea what, or how to solve the problem.
    Further info:
If I F8 boot into VGA mode, exactly the same thing happens.
I've also F8 booted into safe mode and disabled the graphics card driver (ATI card) then rebooted into normal and still the same problem occurs.
I'd be hugely, hugely grateful for help, as I'm at my wits' end here ... Thanks

Ah, so you have a first-gen model from the looks of it. If I might make a suggestion, please update your tagline as follows to assist others in helping you:
    MBP (Early 2006)
You can expand upon this as you like.
Perhaps I wasn't reading the original post, but what version of Windows were you running at the time?
As I recall, that model line of MacBook Pros needed an EFI firmware update to operate Boot Camp. Before the mid-2006 speed bump, these models also needed an SMC firmware patch. With the EFI update, your "Boot ROM revision" should be MBP11.0055.B08
If you can boot to Safe Mode, try using the Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features applet in your Control Panel to uninstall the ATI driver properly. Should that fail, search out "ATI Catalyst Uninstaller" using your favorite Web crawler. The first thing to come up should be AMD's uninstall tool, which you can then run to get rid of the driver.
Once you've done this, reinstall the ATI software from your Leopard/Boot Camp DVD and re-run the Boot Camp 2.1 patch from the Web; this should properly update the ATI software and get you back on track.
We would also need to rule out whether a recent update caused this issue, in which case rolling back to a prior restore point may help. You may lose documents created between the restore point time and the present, but this is normal.
The only other possibility I can suggest is to rebuild your entire Boot Camp setup and take notes as you get back up to the point where the blackout occurred. This way, you'll have some documentation handy whether you repost here or contact Apple directly.
    Good luck,
    Nate

  • Strange display problem band through screen -=Pictures included=-

I bought a refurb intel imac and had it delivered on May 30th. June 2nd, I brought the computer in to the apple store to repair the bleeding backlight on the LCD (corners were very bright); I just picked it up again on June 5th.
At first, I was very impressed with the turnaround time on the repair (3 days, 2 of which were weekend days). However, once I got the imac home & set up again, I was disappointed to see a thick discoloured bar down the entire vertical length of the screen!
The band is really strange; it changes colours depending on what colour is on top of it, and seems to flicker. I've determined that it only appears when the display is set on "millions of colours", not "thousands" or "256". I've also tried resetting the PRAM with no luck...
What are my options here? Is there an easy fix that I can try myself? Or is it more likely that the Apple store techs damaged something internally when they installed the new LCD? I really don't want to lug this computer back to the store, wait several more days, then lug it back home again. It's a huge inconvenience especially since the imac is all-in-one so I'm left using my old PC that was looking forward to a peaceful retirement...I just don't see any other choice...

  • Strange display on some pages

    Hi,
We are using several instances of Apex 2.2.1 (Development, testing, production), all instances have been installed the same way by the same person.
On the latest installation a strange mini-bug appeared: On some pages the following characters are displayed at the bottom of the page: </ht or </htm or </h. This due to the truncation of the html content:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    //-->
    </script></body>
    </h
This bug only appears on large pages (several regions) and the truncation only occured in the final </html>.
We haven't been able to reproduce this bug on four other instances.
    Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Eric.

Thanks for your help, it was related to the character set.
    From logs:
"This is most likely caused by the charset mismatch between modplsql (charset=AL32UTF8) and the database (charset=WE8MSWIN1252) and has performance implications. Please correct this by setting the PlsqlNLSLanguage property correctly."
    Eric.

  • Strange display artifact

I have been seeing a strange on-screen artifact and wonder what kind of problem this indicates.  I'm using a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon running OSX 10.6.8 with the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card and an Apple 23" Cinema HD display (2 actually).  The artifact shows up in the top corners of the Firefox browser window and in the top corners of the Apple Mail application window.  They don't appear at startup, but later in the day.  The artifacts look like this (3 jagged lines in the very corners):
    <IMG src="http://www.fomovideo.com/apple-macpro/Screen_shot_2012-06-18_4.47.33_PM.png">
    <IMG src="http://www.fomovideo.com/apple-macpro/Screen_shot_2012-06-18_4.48.17_PM.png">
    Anyone seen this before?
    Message was edited by: rjfomo

    Grant,
First of all, thanks for replying.  I can understand that the jagged lines are not screen artifacts, but I didn't know what else to call them.  Can you offer some more details about why these marks could be due to a third party application?  I'm not asking what you think they mean because you already stated you don't know; I'm asking how such marks could be produced by any application running on a computer when the marks aren't part of any kind of normal operation of any application that I've ever seen.  BTW, the third-party gadgets you saw belong to Color Munki screen calibration, Stuffit Deluxe magic menu, Intego Internet Security menu and Intego internet incoming/outgoing traffic monitor.

  • Strange display issues for previously healthy SWFs

Many months ago I published SWFs via Xcelsius 2008 that were carefully tested and worked well.  This week, it came to my attention that these SWFs are now displaying strangely under a variety of browsers and Flash Player versions (latest version tested was FP 9).
Symptoms of the problem include, as far as I can tell from just looking at the SWF, dynamic visibility not being respected and transparent objects losing their transparency.  Hence, objects that are supposed to be hidden behind other objects, or objects that are not supposed to display, are doing the opposite.
The SWFs worked exactly as designed from last September up until this month, at some point.  Has anyone else noticed anything like this?
I'm still trying to work out how I should go about root-causing this issue.

    Hi,
I have this sort of issue not with swf but With XLF  i have lost Complete Data in my XLF .The data tabs that were used to map the components were completly lost.So i always mantain backups at multiple locations which saved Me.
My suggestion would be here is Generate a new swf which was wokrking propelry last time.I think this will be fine..But the Symptons you are talking about it Quite strange and needs to look at it...
Can really understand what would be the reason for this.

  • Strange display of a microsoft word document.

    Hi,
I try to add an editale word document in my webcenter project, but when I look at his display, strange symbols replace the letters. This is the picture of the problem:
    http://s19.postimage.org/qci9xjc5v/Sans_titre1.png
I also have a problem of permission for the file. It is in the UCM and I use a content presenter to display it. I'm developing with JDeveloper.
    Thanks for your help!

No need to excuse - at worst, you won't get your answer as people watching this forum might not know it.
This is a question related to Content Presenter, which is WebCenter Portal's feature. But I understand why you thought it belongs here. Anyway, if you want to use Content Presenter, you need to be aware of its behaviour. Particularly to your question, check this link: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/webcenter.1111/e10148/jpsdg_content_jsfpg.htm#CHDEGCFC and around.
Namely, it states: "Documents that can be rendered in a browser (HTML, flash, PDF and image)"
When WebCenter Suite (now, WebCenter Portal) PS3 came, one of my questions was why I can't use native documents and render them in WebCenter Spaces/Apps pages using Content Presenter. Since that time I have not seen that this behaviour would be changed, so I assume that this scenario is not yet supported.
What you can do, though, is to use SSXA - see here: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/doc.1111/e13650/toc.htm - within your WebCenter Portal application. All you need to do is to add Site Studio libraries to your project and follow the manual to create the cosmetics.
Another way could be using Dynamic Converter (URL calling the service converting the document to html) - if you don't want to edit your document on the page, that might be a bit simpler.
Both, SSXA and Dynamic Converter are UCM's features, so for them this forum would be the correct one.

  • Strange display behaviour inputfields on screens

    Hi,
I noticed strange behaviour with inputfields on screens. When a certain inputfield has a maximum length of 50 and a visible length of 50, it depends on the number of spaces whether the inputfield is fulled filled or not. When I have 50 characters, the inputfield is completely filled, but when a number of spaces is used the field is not filled completely although 50 characters are in there.
Any ideas how to solve this? Currently the users are confused as they think its possible to enter more data in the line but they cant as the maximum number of characters has been reached.
    This behaviour is in 4.6B.
    With regards,
    Mike

    Hello Mike,
It took a while to udnerstand your issue but I finally found two sap standard fields behaving both ways.
    Case 1:
Transaction SE09 - Field user name - length 12 display length 12 - i tried putting 12 spaces or 12 lower case 'i' and it filled the entire vissible length.
    Case 2:
Once you go inside the SE09 transaction , choose a request , in the properties tab you have this field 'Project' which is 20 char in length and vissible length also same.
I tried the same spaces and 'i's  there and it only filled up to half of the vissible length.
I looked at the screen for both these elements I found some differences in the screen display attributes which you might like to give a try.
for user name : program RDDM0001 screen no : 220
for project : function group SCTSREQ screen 110
Hope this will fix your problem.
    Mathews

  • LR5.2 softproofing: strange display behaviour

since upgrading from 4.4 to 5.2 I've noticed a strange behaviour when using softproofing in the develop module.
Whenever I switch between rendering intents or different icc profiles, the screen display changes back and forth like 'relative --> no-SP --> perceptual' or 'xx-icc-profile --> no-SP --> yy-icc-profile'. This makes it nearly impossible to judge the differences between RI or icc profiles.
In LR4.4 the switch was seamless between rendering intents or icc profiles.
Not sure what might be the culprit here...
LR5.2 x64, Win7 x64, ATI FireGL V5600 with latest drivers, Colormunki profiled monitor

    Hello
I have also witnessed a semi-transparent rectangle, but I think mine was turquoise. It shows up somewhere in the fourth quadrant of my display during bootup, after my machine had frozen, and I had done a hard shutdown. I started observing these freezes and graphical glitches after updating to 10.5.2.
I would also like to know what is going on.
