Strange distorted fields on icons, cursor and DVD video

Hi!
I was playing a DVD when I put my Powerbook to sleep (i.e. I closed it). The next morning the DVD-image was full of green and b/w distortion, and now all the icons on my desktop, the dock, cursor and the upper right corner of the menu bar is distorted too!
Everything else works fine, but this just looks horrible!
Can someone help me please?
Harald

I hope somebody who knows something about video ram will add something to this discussion! My first problem was wierd happenings with IDVD...viewing a dvd (a very pleasurable experience in the past) suddenly showed all kinds of (mostly red and green) vertical lines all across the screen. Soon after, on occasion, I'd suddenly see dual sets of 5-6 vertical lines about one inch in length showing up on desktop icons, menu bars, and the cursor. A reboot will usually clear it, but it comes back...not right away but within a day or so. But nothing helps the idvd play right. Seems to me this started happening soon after I installed OSX 10.4, but I don't know if there's any connection. I ran the Apple Harware Test program and it indicated a problem with the Vram. So-- what does one do abut that? How does one "clear a corrupt memory map in video RAM"?

Can I save both DVD-R and DVD-Video files onto the same DVD?

    Hi Stan,
I just want the user to be able to run my video clips either on a
computer or on a standard DVD player. It would be nice to include both
formats on a single disc. I am new to this and am not sure what format
is most widely used for standard DVD players. Thanks for your response

  • 10.4.6 Update and DVD-Video

    Hi all.
    Today I've updated from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6.
Today I can't see my DVD-Video on my powerbook g4 combo.
When I insert a DVD-Video on my drive, DVD Video Player app starts but shows nothing. No icon on my desktop.
No problem with data DVD and CDs.
    It seems a microsoft upgrade

Did you repair permissions before updating to 10.4.6? What have you done since the update as far as trouble shooting?

  • I have a DVD-Rom and DVD-Video card for Powerbook and need advice

I acquired 2 accessory components for a G3 series powerbook. I have a dual G4 so have no use for them. There is a M4743 DVD-Rom for Powerbook and a DVD-Video PC card for G3 series Powerbook family M5163. There is also a software CD. I would like to sell them but I really don’t how to explain what this stuff does. I tried Ebay and did not find any matches. Does this make a DVD upgrade for a particular Powerbook? Is something else required? Is Ebay the best place to sell? Any idea what this stuff is worth? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Bob

    Robert,
You apparently have the DVD Video Player Kit for the Powerbook G3 Series "Wallstreet" M4753.
    This is the DVD-ROM module:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/customer/product.php?productid=16219&cat=26 6&page=1
This is the DVD Decoder PC card:
    http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=296&cat=&page=1
The above DVD PC card is not Apple's but there were two third-party vendors who also offered a DVD kit...VST and MCE. They all served the same purpose and will all be priced similarly.
Both PC card and optical drive are required to play DVD movies on the Wallstreet, plus Apple DVD Player is only supported when booted to 9.x, not 10.x.
I really cannot give you a fair price to ask; the above hardware prices are probably high but you will get an idea.

  • Director projects on DVD ROM and DVD video

    Hi all,
I need your attention and your aid to solve a doubt and a
job. I've to create a DVD Video that plays on dvd home players and
on macs and windows computers, with dvd readers. Moreover I need
that the same DVD contains a directors project (the same project
for mac and win system) that start automatically, when the dvd is
inserted in a dvd reader of a computer.
    Is it possible?
Does director make it (DVD video + DVD rom with a directors
    project?
Director vs DVD Studio Pro in order to obtain a master DVD
hybrid (DVD video + DVD rom with a directors project)?
    Thanks for your attention,

Wahey!!! That's me!!! Crikey I don't remember posting to that
    forum!?!
Anyway, back to your problem - as already noted there really
    isn't an
elegant way of solving it! You quite literally have to whack
    everything into
one folder - when it comes to hybrid DVD-Videos there's no
    'nice partitions'
as we have with hybrid CD-ROM I'm afraid!
The route I took was to develop the DVD-Video and add the
    Director Windows
projector and its gubbings via the ROM content folder [used
    Encore - but
    DVDSP isn't too far apart].
Also within this DVD-ROM folder lay a Mac disc image [DMG] of
    our Director
Mac projector with it's associated Xtras, etc. - with enough
    time on my
hands I could easily have added asset sharing but time was
    tight to say the
least and I knew I had lots and lots of space on the DVD so
    basically
packaged all the assets together with the projector within
    the
aforementioned Mac disc image. I also added a PDF + text
    document at the DVD
root level explaining to Mac users that they would have to
    mount the
included Mac disc image to gain access to the data side of
    the disc.
As it's been pointed out already it isn't pretty and it isn't
    elegant,
but... it works!! I was also advised by our replicator's that
    this is the
"safest" way to go. Yes you could try the Mac partitions
    route but there
really is NO guarantee that all standalone DVD players are
    capable of
reading the final disc - I wasted numerous coasters with such
    ideas and it
was very, VERY hit and miss!
If you've a wide DVD-Video collection take a look around at
    some of the
titles that hold ROM content as well and you'll find that the
    big studios
also produce their DVD's in the same fashion, for example
    [off the top of my
head] the Matrix trilogy are produced in this way.
    Good luck...

  • Move Cursor to wathc Video & Download

Using a B570 with Windows 7 64bit, I'm finding that I can't keep a video running (eg C4 player) without constantly flicking the cursor. (The sound keeps working.)
It also happens when trying to open web pages. Flicking the cursor hurries it up.
When I say 'flicking the cursor' I'm using the touchpad.
This is what I have tried so far: -
I read in the Firefox forum to turn off hardware acceleration to se if it cures this problem. So I used the Display option in the Control Panel to run through DirectX diagnostics (no problem found). I then tried to go to on and turn off the acceleration, but the Change Settings button is greyed out (Display Settings, Advanced Settings, Troubleshoot.) I then went to the driver and told it to update, which it apparently did.
    Nothing works so far.
    Can anyone help please.
    Eddie

Just an update. I'm pretty sure now that this is Firefox related. It doesn't happen in Chrome, and there is some discussion on it in the Firefox forum, having started with version 25.
But I have had it in the past when watching videos.
Also, it's the Firefox hardware acceleration that they were advising to turn off. But none of the suggestions work, and it seems a funny connection to me between the cursor and running videos/opening sites.  Is the PC going off and doing something else, thus halting the action, and gets brought back by moving the cursor ?

My pro book is actn strange......the cursor and rainbow ball sticks on screens and a bar code takes over...everything freezes and I have to force close but it seems to be happening more frequently and getting worse......can anyone help please..getting really worried

What do you mean by "a bar code takes over?"  If your cursor is degenerating into something that looks like a bar code, you have very serious problems.  Possibly hardware problems.  Try running Apple Hardware Test.  If that comes up with problems, contact Apple for service.  If not, it doesn't necessarily mean there aren't any hardware issues, but you'll need to move on to other possible cures.  Test in safe mode (hold down the shift key at startup) and in a different user account and report the results here.  If you continue having problems in both those situations, try reinstalling the system.

  • Sudden unexplained "artifacts" surrounding cursor and icons on PowerMac G5

Two days ago this weird grid of dots and bars suddenly appeared on my cursor and surrounded all the icons on my desktop. Most fonts such as in Word don't seem to be affected, byt most non-letter graphics are. Games have patches of this grid in some areas. It follows my cursor around; it IS my cursor. This never happened to my older G4, which I still use. I've tried the settings and rebooting, but nothing works. What is this? Help!

One possibility is an overheating graphics card, check that its fan is running and the heat sink is stable and in proper contact with the core chip.

  • Strange icon for homemade dvd folder

I recorded a DVD using a VHS/DVD recorder by dumping a super 8 video camera to the recorder by way of AVI cables. After the DVD was finished I finalized the disk. When I placed the disk into my computer I am able to play it by using DVD Player. However, when the disk shows up on my desktop, instead of the normal icon of a DVD showing up, it displays a folder with a small red circle in the lower right corner with a white minus sign in the center of it. When I click on the folder there is nothing inside. Like I said before, the video plays in DVD Player. Can someone tell me what is going on? I would like to rip the disk with Mac the Ripper but there are no files within the folder. Thanks.
    Matt

Have you run Skype yet? I believe this happens with newly downloaded applications as a warning. Use Skype as usual. This funny icon will go away eventually. Have a look at the skype application in a Finder window (not via stacks in the dock) and it should have the correct icon.

  • A strange error about cursor and dblink

My dbms:Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.4.0
I have a stored procedure, which inserts records from a remote database into a local table.
The 'insert' statement have similar pattern:
    insert into table_a
    select table_b.columns from table_b@dblink
    where table_a.column in (select table_b.column from table_b@dblink);
    commit;
There are about 100 'insert' statement in my procedure. But there is same error messages at the same
place when the procedure is run. The error messages:ora-01000:maximum open cursors exceeded,ora-02063:
preceding line from dblink. I have manually run the 'insert'statements before the error place and after the error place.
The before and after statements are both OK.
From google.com, I have learned that 'commit' will clear the implicit cursors from 'insert' statement. So I think
the problem is ora-02063. Again, keywords 'ora-01000 ora-02063'from google.com, I found 'alter session close
database link dblink' might solve the problem. I have add the 'alter session' statement after each 'commit' in
my procedure. Unfortunately, same error happened again at the same place.
I am puzzled. Would you like to give some advice? Thanks a lot!

    Hello
Well, the best place to lookup error messages is here....
    http://www.oracle.com/pls/db92/db92.homepage
It's also where all the rest of the database documentation is. As for this error, too many open cursors, as it suggests, one session has too many open. From the statement you are using to select the data, it seems like you are forming the statements dynamically, is this the case? If so, you're using cursors, and so there's a good chance you aren't closing them.

  • Help! P965 owner, something strange with cd's and dvd's

I have a Intel E6400 + MSI p965 Platinum, Hdd Seagate 7200.10 and an Asus 1608P3s dvd-rw. Everything goes all right, except when I try to play a cd or dvd. it doesn't matter if it is a movie/ or music cd/dvd, it runs so slowly that it's impossible to watch. There is also a metalic noise over the sound.
May it be the integrated sound card? I use the on board Realtek sound. May it be the IDE cable or ide connection? Is it the Asus dvd-rw broken? I don't know, all I know is it's impossible to watch a movie from a dvd because it's running too slow. The video card is a 7900, it's working properly. Anyone else experienced this? First I supposed it must be a driver incompatibility, so I uninstalled the Ace mega codecs pack, and Nero as well. No result. I uninstalled the optical dvd-rw, and installed it back. Same effect. I tried another ide cable for the Asus. No change. I don't know what is wrong, why I can't playback movies and music. I also checked in windows that every ide port is in udma mode, not pio.
I must add that if I use a dvd decrypter and copy the content of a dvd (music or film) on the hard drive, it runs ok from the hdd. The slowdown and the metalic noise appears only when I try to run it from the cd/dvd directly.
    Thanks a lot.

     :D
Thank you soooooooo much! i did exactly as you said and now it is 1.17.11.
I checked both dvd with movie and dvd with music and everything works properly now.
Thanks a lot, you took my anger away, it had become so annoing lately.

  • Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

    Hi
I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
    Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?
    Help appreciated.
    Ewan

    Thanks Arnie
Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.
