Strange .dmg showing in Disk Utility

I just noticed this disk image:
I followed the file path and found a locked folder. Only system has read/write access, no one else does.
I checked my MBP with Mavericks and found the same folder; however, in Mavericks, it is not showing in Disk Utility.
Does anyone have any ideas what that does (I can see it's "flashplayer") and what it is doing in that particular location? Thanks.

I have the same, but I am using Lion:
My guess, and it is a guess, it is Adobe Flash.
Ciao.

  • Wd my book shows in disk utility but not in finder

can open the drive from within disk utility and a regular finder window will pop up. all data is intact. verify and repair show no issues. have checked finder preferences for showing external drives.

Do know the name of any file that is on the iso image? If so, do a Spotlight search on the file name and see if it show up. If it does, Command click on the result in the Spotlight list and see if the enclosing folder opens in Finder.

  • Mounted .iso file shows in Disk Utility, but inaccesible through finder

    Hello.
I have an .iso file that used to mount flawlessly, but now when double clicked shows only in Disk Utility, while remaining inaccesible otherwise (finder hierarchy starting from computer should show all mounted drives, but this one is missing). Disk Utility doesn't find any errors. Is there any other way to find out what's wrong?
    thanks

  • Thunderbolt WD Duo, does not show in Disk Utility

Hi Have imac 27 (late 2012) with 10.8.3 update OSX. Connecting to WD Thunderbolt Duo, the disk does not show in disk Utility, sys log or in any connection to the system. WD utility does not seems it either. Restart does not help. By disk returning to seller, the disk works fine on other comp (with the same cable, with the same power adapter)
Is there any issue known with the thunderbolt ports? Tried both all found on internet, but no resolution, to my issues.
Seems to be my imac hardware or maybee the software (thunderbotl 1.2) update.
    Lukas

All thunderbolt port tried, cable exchanged, no change
I have done following procedure , no change
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Strange disk showing in Disk Utility

After doing several updates recently on my MacBook Air, decided to run a Disk Permissions Repair. Upon opening Disk Utility, I see my HD, then a grey horizontal line, and under that I see: decryptedFile.dmg then an icon of Flash Player under that. Seemed rather strange to see this in Disk Utility. Why is it showing up? Do I need to to be concerned? How do I get rid of it?

The automatic Flash update service downloaded it. If you've installed the update, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide the path at the bottom of the Disk Utility's window without the file's name, and delete it from there.

  • I can no longer make dmg files in disk utility since upgrading to Mountain Lion

    Hi everyone,
I'm a videographer, and have been using the facility in disk utility to make dmg backups of my media cards. It's proved to be a neat and tidy way of doing things, and is my equivalent to storing videotapes.
However, I no longer can make them.
    My technique has been to:
    1. select the memory card in disk utility
    2. press new image
    3. browse to destination for the dmg/hit save
    4. sit back and wait for the process to complete.
this has been working for me in Snow Leopard, but not in mountain lion. I can't identify any other variables that have changed except the OS upgrade.
    Firstly 'Authopen' prompts me for username/password. After username/password it starts creating the image, but stops with an error;
"Unable to create "SD-Card.dmg." (Device not configured).
    The card is sitting in a media card reader. I tried another card reader that resulted in;
Unable to create "SD-Card.dmg." (Input/output error)
Anyone experienced this, or any ideas on what to try? As the card readers both work insofar as they show the memory cards in the finder etc, could there be a disk-utility-specific problem with them? Or do I need to change my procedure? I can copy the files to the hard drive and make a dmg from a folder, but I'd rather not have to do that.
    thanks.

Maybe just corrupted Disk Utility preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DiskUtility.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try creating a .dmg file.

  • .dmg files open disk utility. Can't install new software

For the last few months I've not been able to download and launch disk images (.dmg files).  Instead of a dialogue asking if I want to launch the downloaded file or some other natural step in launching the disk image, I hear the hard drive boot as if I'm restarting the computer, and disk utility opens.
Disk utility sees the image and its path clearly, but shows the status as "Not Mounted."  When I control click on the .dmg file, disk utility is the only app shown to open it, and in the main applications directory there is no obvious choice to mount the disk image.
This has happened twice when apple service folks ask me to download their app to view my desktop actions, and after some frustration they just give up and talk me through solutions the old fashioned way.  One of them mentioned that I might be missing a certain script, but neither was willing when asked to help me solve the problem.  Another asked that I try opening it with Safari (?) but like many apps it was greyed-out when I access the applications directory as mentioned above.
I'm running 10.5.8.  Thanks for any tried and true solutions as I'm now not able to download and install various software (the latest upgrade of Skype for example) and this is clearly a critical problem.
    Thanks,
    Joseph

I just solved this myself, having clicked on a related "More Like This" link after I posted...
After double clicking the .dmg file in my download directory and automatically launching Disk Utility, I selected the .dmg disk image in the left-hand column. I then clicked over to the "Restore" tab in the top-center of the Disk Utility panel.
In the upper row of control buttons, I clicked the "Open" icon.  This was not an obvious choice because it is small and "Open" is not the function I was seeking.  If you roll-over that icon it says it is for mounting or unmounting a disk.
The disk image then mounted on the first try AND once it was mounted the "Open" icon name suddenly changed (greyed-out) to read: "Mount."  A bit of an odd and elusive process but much easier than other more invasive procedures (like "repairing permissions") to recreate that auto-mounting capability I had lost...

  • ProAppRuntime showing in Disk Utility

Should ProAppRuntime.dmg show up as a not mounted disk in Disk Utility, or have a problem??
    Keith Moore

I know what a .dmg file is.

  • Mounting .dmg updates using Disk Utility?

    Hello Apple Forum,
I've got a problem you might be able to solve.
Adobe Illustrator CS is crashing. I have posted the prob here and at the Adobe forum. The Adobe forum has advised me to install the 11.0.2. Illustrator update.
Can you tell me how to mount the .dmg file after downloading with Disk Utility? It's not just double click is it?

I concur with Alex that something is amiss with your system. Normally, double-clicking on a .dmg file will invoke DiskImageMounter which decompresses the .dmg image and puts a virtual drive on the Desktop, from which you can copy files or run an installer (this is what 'mounting' the .dmg disk image means). If you open a .dmg using Disk Utility, either via the 'Open Disk Image' command from Disk Utility's File menu of by control-clicking the .dmg file and selection Open With... to call up Disk Utility, you see a message window about "attaching disk image" while Disk Utility is mounting the mage.
That you're mounting a .dmg image, briefly seeing the mounted image on the Desktop, only to have the mounted image disappear, suggests you either have the Finder Preferences of the System Preferences> CDs&DVDs set to ignore the mounted hard drive images, or the sysytem prefernces are corrupted and think that's what they should be doing. Alex's suggestion on running Disk Utility> Repair Disk and Repair Permissions is the first step in troubleshooting the issue.
You can also check preferences by logging in to a different user account (if necessary, create a new, troubleshooting only account to work with a fresh set of default permissions and preferences) and seeing if that different account shows the same behavior; you can download and run Preferential Treatment; or launch Applications> Utilities> Terminal, then copy and paste the following exactly into Terminal and press return:
    find ~/Library -name '*.plist' -exec /usr/bin/plutil -lint {} \;
The refernce to using ther Finder's Go menu was to look for the mounted disk image in the leftmost pane of the Finder window that opens; e.g., if I doble-click "gc593x.dmg", after a few seconds I'll see a hard drive icon "GraphicConverter" in the Finder window and also on the Desktop. If I click on the GraphicConverter hard drive icon in the Finder window, I see that mounted drive's contents. What happens when you click on the mounted drive's icon on your Mac?

  • External Hard Drive doesn't mount, not showing in Disk Utility

I have had this Western Digital external hard drive for a few months now and until this evening it worked fine. It won't show up on my Macbook Pro and it is not present in the Disk Utility section. The light on the external hard drive is on so it doesn't appear to be a power issue. I have another of the same exact hard drive and it works fine. I tried switching USB cables and even power supplies and I can't get it to work. Does anyone know how to recover the files or is the hard drive toast?

Something's wrong inside the case; it's either a problem which is preventing the computer from properly connecting to the drive or the drive itself is dead.
Data recovery from a failed drive can only be done by a professional service, which can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.

  • External Hard Drive showing in Disk Utility - but not desktop.

    A little background:
Yesterday, I moved my shelf where I have my modem, Airport Extreme, Airport Express and an external HD connected to the extreme to be a wireless HD for all users to access. Everything worked great - no problems whatsoever.
Problem: I have reconnected everything exactly as it was and reconfigured it as it was and now the external HD is having issues. When connected to the extreme, I can see it in the airport utility, but cannot gain access to it in that way. When I connect directly to my macbook, it is recognized by the disk utility, but does not appear on the desktop.
I don't know if this may have caused the problem, but I carelessly, unplugged the power bar for which all the above mentioned hardware plugs into when moving the shelf. Now, everything works as it did, except I can't get the express to show up once it is configured (but this isn't surprising as I had to fight with it the first time I configured it - not uncommon I am told), and the HD is no longer accessible via the network, or when directly connected to my macbook.
Help! According to the utilities, the data is still on the disk, I just can't access it in any way.

From the Disk Utility, select the drive and click on the Repair Disk(not Repair Permissions) button. If the Disk Utility finds a problem it can't fix, DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro will likely succeed.

  • External hard drives not showing in disk utility

When I connect a new Eagle/Consus W-Series external hard drive enclosure to my 15" PB, the hard drive doesn't show-up in the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window. The only thing that shows is the drive in the PB. The hard drive in the enclosure is a WD SATA and is connected via USB cable. The same thing happens, or doesn't happen, when I'm connected via ethernet to my G5 2.3GHz Dual Core: when I open Disk Utility on the PB, the drive on the G5 doesn't show. What I'm trying to attempt is to mirror/clone Tiger from my PB onto the new, to me, G5 using SuperDuper.

Hi, Bob. I obviously didn't understand the situation properly, and now that I realize that, I'm afraid I still don't.
When the G5 is connected, via ethernet to my PB, the hard drive does not show-up in the PB's disk utility pane.
The G5 doesn't have a hard drive in it now, is that correct? So why connect it via Ethernet to the Powerbook?
If you're trying to clone the Powerbook's hard drive onto the G5's drive inside the external enclosure, all that needs to be connected is the external enclosure to the Powerbook, via USB cable. The G5 itself isn't involved in that process at all. When the G5's drive is in the enclosure and connected to the Powerbook, does it appear in Disk Utility on the Powerbook? If not, see my previous suggestions, with the exception of my comment about it not working with either computer.
If the SATA hard drive doesn't appear on the Powerbook's desktop or in Disk Utility when it is in the G5 and the computers are properly networked via Ethernet, recheck your sharing settings: the G5's drive must be shared to be visible to the Powerbook. In that mode, you may not be able to clone the Powerbook's drive to the other one, because the drive in the G5 is being used to run the G5. But if the G5's drive is partitioned, you should be able to clone the Powerbook's drive, via Ethernet, to a partition other than the one which contains the OS that's running the G5.
While the hard drive is in the external enclosure, I can hear it spinning, and am assuming that all the connections are working properly.
If the drive spins, you can be sure it's getting power, and that's good. But you can't safely conclude from that that any or all of the data connections are working properly; in fact the evidence suggests the contrary.
In short, there may be not one but two problems at work here: incorrect sharing settings when the two computers are networked, and a bad cable, connection, or enclosure when the drive is connected to the Powerbook via USB.
EDIT: Let me also add that if the only Tiger installer discs you have are the ones that came with the Powerbook, then having copies of that Tiger installation on both of your computers would be a violation of the software license that accompanied those discs, which entitles you to have Tiger installed on only one computer at a time. If that's the case, you should really buy a retail Tiger installer disc to use on the G5.

  • Hard drive not showing in Disk Utility?

Recently, I went to install Windows 10 via Bootcamp and set up two partitions (one for OS X, 500gb and one for Windows, 500gb). I accidentally installed Windows onto of the OS X partition and somehow the Windows OS disappeared so I currently have no OS to boot in to. I can run Yosemite off of a USB, but when I go to Internet Recovery or Disk Utility, it only shows this.
      Disk Description : Media
      Total Capacity : 0 Bytes
      Connection Bus : SATA
      Write Status : Read/Write
      Connection Type : Internal
      S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
      Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
I know the hard drive can't be dead because this is a brand new laptop and it was working just fine before. How can I get the drive fixed?
Instead of buying DiskWarrior since it's $110, can I just buy a new 1TB HDD and put it into the computer? Can I hook up my laptop via Firewire to my iMac and reformat the drive or something?

Or try and boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.  The display should show a revolving globe.  By following the instructions, this will connect the MBP to the Apple servers and allow you to erase the HDD and reinstall the ORIGINAL OSX.
    Ciao.
The problem with this option is that the computer does not recognize that there is any space on the hard drive itself. The hard drive is just labeled as "Media" and has 0 bytes available. I tried using GUID partitions but Disk Utility says the drive is too small.

  • Hard Drive not showing in Disk Utility (but showing fine on PC)

I have been using an 1TB USB powered Hard Drive with my MBP for a year or so.
I got a new 2 TB drive and loaded it and installed the seagate dashboard software.
At that point, it appears something may have happened to my HP and it no longer appears on my Mac or in Disk Utility.  It appears to be getting power, and it shows up fine on a Windows PC.
    Any thoughts??
This one is really baffling me?
    Thanks

    One other note
A folder called TheVoumeSettingsFolder now appears on the HP, in case that is causing the issue.
