Strange Dock icon in System Preferences

Does anyone know why my System Preferences pane is acting strange? Look at the Dock icon.

Hi Matt,
close that system preference, try to delete com.apple.systempreference.plist from your home folder.
Home folder/User > library > preference > com.apple.systempreference.plist
And try to delete this too:
User > Library > Cache > com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
reboot and open your system preference.
Good Luck.

  • Strange "speech" icon in System Preferences

The "speech" icon in System Preferences looks like a white oversized box with a lightswitch in it. The word "speech" is cut off along the bottom of this box-like icon.
Any ideas as to what might have caused this, and if I can fix it? Thanks!

    Hi, JdotL.
    1. It sound like the Speech preference pane file has been assigned the icon for System Preferences. Does Speech preferences open if you click this?
    2. Try removing System Preferences preferences and caches:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder, then trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    3. Trash the file
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
    4. Trash the file
    com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, where xxx is an alphanumeric string.
    5. Empty Trash.
    6. Launch System Preferences and see if the problem is resolved.3. As a general checkup, I suggest you run the procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    Good luck!

  • Missing dock icon in system preferences

I tried combo update 10.5.8 and tried deleting com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, no good

I don't seem to see anything that is referring to the dock. But, I found this link with google and ran it. http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=103078&d=1203111933 . it did restore my dock to system preferences but it didn't restore my apple icon dock preferences. I can live with this on my Leopard computer. Strange. Have a fix for all my problems?

  • I guess I didn't explaine that I have a healthy operating Windows 8 Boot camp partition on my hard drive. When I upgraded to Mavericks I am no long able to access the bootcamp partition from the disk icon in system preferences; the Windows 8 works fine.

On both Mini Mac and iMac 27" I am no longer able to utalize the Startup Disk icon in System Preferences; the Windows 8 on Bootcamp partition works fine if I close the Mavericks OX and select the Windows partition at bootup from the hard drive. My question is why don't the icon in System Prederences work anymore since I upgraded to Mavericks. Also, Users & Groups, Printers & Scanners icons no longer work either.

  • Why is there not a MobileMe icon in System Preferences on my Dome?

My MacBook Pro laptop has the MobileMe icon in system preferences but the Dome does not. Both hosts contain the latest software. Will this prevent the two hosts from syncing?

You've posted this in the iSync forum - the MobileMe forums are here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=116
(iSync has nothing to do with MobileMe syncing, or the MobileMe icon in System Preferences).
You might also want to clarify what you mean by "Dome" - probably means something to you, but nobody else!

installed download of Yosemite and now have message saying "Wi-fi: no hardware installed"  Also do not have a wi-fi icon on system preferences menu.

Is it in your applications folder (look in UTILITIES)?
    If not, reinstall the OSX.

  • HT203796 I don't have the iCloud icon in "SYSTEM PREFERENCES" , any ideas?

I could synchronize my iPad with my Mac Book Pro before replacing the hard drive and recoveing data from my Carbonite backup.
Now I don't see the iCloud icon in SYSTEM PREFERENCES.
    Is this a common occurence?

Welcome to the Apple Community alapan.
Which operating system are you now using, OSX 10.6 and earlier do not have iCloud.

  • Software Update icon in System Preferences changed

Never seen this before. This morning I noticed that Software Update icon in System Preferences changed from the regular one to a BIG switch. Noticed this only in MBP.

I got it back. I moved Software Update preference pane from /System/Library/PreferencePanes to Desktop and moved it back. The original icon is back ! Ofcourse I ran Disk Permissions after checking.

  • HT4597 iCloud icon in System preferences

You should only see that if the computer is running Mac OS X 10.7.2 or newer.

  • Security Icon in System Preferences Disappeared

Just recently I have a recieved a Wireless Mighty Mouse and in the process of installing the software that came with it, my security icon in System Preferences has disappeared. It shows a lightswitch instead. Any ideas? Here is a picture:

    thefarky,
Quit System Preferences if it's running and trash the following file:
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Then launch System Preferences and hopefully the Security Icon will return to normal appearance.
    ;~)

  • Strange icon in system preferences...

any ideas what to do about this one? Instead of my "dock" icon, i'm getting some weird picture...
    http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/9839/picture2xb7.png

Quit from System Preferences and trash com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, which you will find in ~/Library/Caches, i.e the Caches folder in the Library of your Home. A new cache file will be rebuilt automatically.
All the items in that Caches folder can do with being trashed every so often – they do tend to get corrupted or 'stale' – and they will be re-created afresh.

  • Corrupt icons in System Preferences panel?

For some strange reason, the 'Startup Disk' icon in my system preferences panel has changed...it looks like a giant light switch and you can see a bit of a border around it. Is there any way to reset this back to normal?
You can check out an image here: http://web.mac.com/jhurtig/
I'm running 10.4.6 on a Macbook 2 GHz with all the latest updates installed.

Hi Jonas, delete these two files and relaunch SystemPreferences:
    ~(yourhome)/library/caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    -mj

  • Funky icons in System Preferences

I just noticed today that my icons for "Sharing" and "Starup Disk" have changed in my System Preferences. They look somewhat like the lightswitch from the system preferences icon, however I can't make out exactly what it is.
How can I get my original icons back? Any ideas as to what could have caused this change??? I haven't been doing anything irregular... hopefully this wasn't a security threat.
Please send help for my icons, thanks!

This has happened to me once or twice. It seems that it is caused by a corrupted cache or pref file.
I corrected it by closing sys prefs and deleting these two files -
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache

  • There is no icloud icon in system preferences on my mac

I'm trying to upgrade icloud storage on my mac because the "complimentary" storage I got when they switched from me.com to icloud is expiring.  The instructions are simple: open system preferences, click the icloud icon, change your options.  But I don't have an icloud icon: I've still got a me.com icon, which won't connect because it indicates a server error.  Anyone else have this problem?

Open the Mac App Store and try purchasing Mountain Lion 10.8. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU with at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
