Strange EDGE behavior since last Friday

Hello,
I work on the 7th floor of a large 8 story building in N Central NJ. Before last Friday I was able to get a constant 4-5 bar Edge signal in my office. 3G never worked in the building. However now, I will get a good 4-5 bar signal for maybe 20 minutes and then the phone will suddenly change to "No Service". Edge will sometimes come back, but it usually requires me to reboot the phone. If I turn on Airplane mode and then turn it back off the phone just displays "Searching...." and the Edge never returns. Strange thing is that if I am listening to Pandora radio or try to use Safari when the phone says "No Service" it sometimes still works. How can I have "No Service" and still be able to xfer data?
Updated to 2.0.1 and it didn't improve things. Went and got a new SIM card and that didn't help either. How can I get a good signal and then all of a sudden have it drop to "No Service"? I'm not moving the phone or anything! Are others experiencing this type of problem? Do I have a bad phone?
NM

If your phone is able to receive data with "no service" showing, there is likely something wrong. Are you able to send or receive calls with "no service"? Remember, the signal strength meter has a built in lag, otherwise it would be fluctuating rapidly, especially indoors. If you move a phone in a steel framed building, it initially won't show a change in bars, but a minute or more later, jump up or down. The placement of your hand on the phone can also have a big effect. Never compare "bars" from one phone model to another.
To get a more accurate measurement of signal, put your iPhone in "Field Test" mode. To do this enter <star>3001#12345#<star> in the keypad and press call. The "bars" will be replaced by a number - the actual signal strength in -dBm ( the lower the better). Numbers of less than -100 (i.e. -110) are getting weak.

  • Since last Friday, Type tool is VERY slow in InDesign CS6 8.0.1

    Since last Friday, any time I try to switch to the Type tool or using the Type tool try to switch from one text box to another I get the spinning wheel icon and the Control Panel goes blank for 30 to 60 seconds. Double-clicking acts like single-clicking and triple and quadruple-clicking act like double or single-clicking. I'd never had this problem before last Friday and it happens inconsistently. Page thumbnails and instant redraw are turned off and display quality is at Typical. I am using Windows 7 x64 Professional SP1 on a machine with Dual Intel Xeon 3 GHz processors and 8 GB RAM.

    Do a system restore to last Thursday....

  • Buggy behavior since last Safari update

    Yahoo mail is very slow mo since last Safari update was installed.

    From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset. Quit Safari, relaunch Safari.
    Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit Safari, relaunch Safari, try Gmail.
    Definitely empty the cache more often either from the Safari menu bar, Safari / Empty Cache, or Option + Command + E on your keyboard.

  • Strange AppleScript Behavior Since Upgrade

    Here's a weird one: After upgrading to Tiger, I also upgraded a very simple applescript that sets the sound volume. I use it on login in case I was "rockin' out" when I last logged off. The old script was simply:
    set sound volume 2
    but that syntax is now "deprecated," so I updated it to the new version:
    set sound volume output volume 25
    But this new script produces a strange error: "Can't make current application into type small real." HUH?
    OK, so...I created another user account and tried it from a fresh account and it WORKED. So, I thought maybe there was something weird in the system. I did a re-install of Tiger using "archive and install" and then tried the new account again - it still worked. The old account still produced the weird error message.
    So I began moving all my stuff to the new account. But in the process, thought I would check the script again. Now that I'm 98% moved into the new account...the script now causes the same error!
    AAAGGGGHHHHH!
    Has anyone had an experience like this? What do I do now?

    Move half of your home folder's contents to the desktop, and then try the script again; if it works, move half of the items on the desktop back and try again. If it doesn't work, move half of the items currently in the home folder to the desktop. Repeat this process until you find the problem file or have run through everything. If you find the file, post back with its name and path, as knowing this may be useful in troubleshooting future cases of the same issue.

  • IPod Touch 5g out of stock since last Friday (21th) when will Best Buy have a restock?

    I live in South Texas, and I keep on checking online and they say it's unavailable.

    Hello omayraps12,
    I'm sorry that you're having trouble tracking down an iPod Touch. We get new shipments in to stores all the time, but I can't make any specific promises about when it might be in stock at a store near you. My best advice is to keep checking back to BestBuy.com or calling ahead to your regular Best Buy store for updates.
    Happy Shopping!

  • Way weird behavior since last software update...

    I have had my machine 3years and never experienced issues like this... First of all I just had to re-set my password to get in here... The secret question I set for myself was not the one I set for myself... Dig? nor was it my mac.com address in the window when it came time for me to have it emailed... Second time I have had to reset my password in 72hrs... Mail has gone nutz too! deleted mail reappears... drafts multiply then dont go away after being sent... mail moved to created folders shows back up in inbox... Then acts like its sending when there is nothing in drafts or outbox... Almost always have to force quit... All of this started about a week ago with latest software update... Checked permissions... ran thru disk utility... gettin more nutty every 6-8 hours..***???

    I am having very similar difficulties. Is this a symptom of the dreaded virus or malware attacks I have heard of. Anyone with insight please help. My Mail is completely useless in this state.

  • Strange start-up freezes since last security update.

    Hello,
    I've had some strange behavior since the I applied the last security update and was wondering whether anyone else had experienced similar difficulties.
    Occasionally (1 in 5 boots) my MBP experiences freezes after I have logged in, but before Finder is launched. I have left the machine run for > 15 minutes before being forced to do an un-graceful shutdown. The machine is frozen at "nebula" splash screen, with the spinning "beachball of death" but there is no menu bar, and the machine is unresponsive to any key strokes.
    Console log of what appears to be the issue is included below.
    System Software Overview:
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 9.8.0
    Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
    Boot Mode: Normal
    Computer Name: macbookpro
    User Name: xxxxxxxx
    Time since boot: 1:22
    I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with similar problems or anyone who might be able to shed some light on what is actually going on and failing.
    Thanks,
    /scott

    OK, I may have gotten to the bottom of this. Admittedly I am grasping at straws here.
    Firstly, the log message seemed to indicate issues with the per-user launch agents. As mentioned previously I have verified the disk via Disk Utility with no problems. However, I did not run a disk permission check. I ran that and found some minor inconsistencies. But at the end of the permission check it reported unexpected ACLs on a number of system directories, including ~/Library, which is where the the per-user Launch Agents are stored.
    A quick search of the discussion forums indicate that incremental OS X updates have a habit of corrupting permissions in such a way that ACLs are reported on directories. The only way to correct this situation is to do a re-install of the COMBO pkg.
    I re-installed 10.5.8_COMBO (which took awhile) and re-checked permissions. I get the same small inconsistencies (all with FrontRow), but no reported issues with ACLs. Yay!
    I have rebooted about 10 times and am yet to see the problem as reported, so I am tentatively declaring victory. Obviously I realize that re-installing the COMBO update may have fixed any number of issues, none of which are related to the ACL issue reported by disk permission check, which is why I say I am grasping at straws. But this seems to have fixed my problems. I will continue to test and post results.

    Since Apple doesn't repair iPhones (they replace them) you will have to take it back to whoever "fixed" it. Since it's been opened by an unauthorized 3rd party, it is no longer eligible for replacement by Apple.

  • Bug in my code or strange memory behavior ?

    Hi, Guys !
    It's been a while since I post something in this forum - trying to use your help when it's really needed.
    So, here we go ...
    (we use Oracle 8.1.7 on Unix box and SQL * Plus 8.1.6)
    While back I wrote "core" PL/SQL package that resides in let's say DB1 database. It has RECORD_EXISTS_FNC function designed to dynamically check If the record exists in certain table/view. Assumptions are that you pass in :
    Table/View name, Column name, and unique numeric value (because by DBA rules all of our Tables have SEQUENCE as a Primary Key. And I plan soon to put in overloaded function to accept unique character value)
    Also every Table has SYS_TIME_STAMP and SYS_UPDATE_SEQuence columns that populated by Trigger before Insert/Update representing Last Update time_stamp
    and how many times record was updated within same second.
    (in case more than one User updates same record in same time - that was written before Oracle had more granular date/time). So function has SYS_TIME_STAMP and SYS_UPDATE_SEQUENCE parameters (optional) accordingly.
    And It looks something like :
    FUNCTION RECORD_EXISTS_FNC
    (iBV_NAME IN USER_VIEWS.VIEW_NAME%TYPE,
    iPK_FIELD IN USER_TAB_COLUMNS.COLUMN_NAME%TYPE,
    iPK_VALUE IN NUMBER,
    iSYS_TIME_STAMP IN DATE DEFAULT NULL,
    iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IN NUMBER DEFAULT NULL) RETURN BOOLEAN IS
    TYPE REF_CUR IS REF CURSOR;
    CR REF_CUR;
    i PLS_INTEGER DEFAULT 0;
    vRESULT BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE;
    vQUERY USER_SOURCE.TEXT%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    vQUERY := 'SELECT 1 FROM ' || iBV_NAME || ' WHERE ' || iPK_FIELD || ' = ' || iPK_VALUE;
    IF iSYS_TIME_STAMP IS NOT NULL AND iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IS NOT NULL THEN
    vQUERY := vQUERY || ' AND SYS_TIME_STAMP = TO_DATE (''' || iSYS_TIME_STAMP || ''')
    AND SYS_UPDATE_SEQ = ' || iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ;
    END IF;
    IF iBV_NAME IS NOT NULL AND
    iPK_FIELD IS NOT NULL AND
    iPK_VALUE IS NOT NULL THEN
    OPEN CR FOR vQUERY;
    FETCH CR INTO i;
    vRESULT := CR%FOUND;
    CLOSE CR;
    END IF;
    RETURN vRESULT;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    IF CR%ISOPEN THEN
    CLOSE CR;
    END IF;
    INSERT_ERROR_LOG_PRC ('CORE_PKG', 'ORACLE', SQLCODE, SQLERRM, 'RECORD_EXISTS_FNC');
    RETURN vRESULT;
    END RECORD_EXISTS_FNC;
    So the problem is when I call this function from let's say
    database DB2 (via db remote link and synonym) and I know exactly that record does exists (because I am selecting those SYS fields before pass them in) - I get the correct result TRUE. The other programmer (Patrick) calls this function within same DB2 database, within same UserID/password (obviously different session), running exactly the same testing code and gets result FALSE (record doesn't exist, but it does !) He tried to Logoff/Login again several times within several days and try to run it and still was getting FALSE !
    I tried to Logoff/Login again and I was getting mostly TRUE and sometimes FALSE too !!!
    I thought may be It has something to do with REF CURSOR that I use to build SQL on the fly, so I changed to NDS
    using EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement - nothing changed.
    vQUERY := 'SELECT COUNT (1) FROM ' || iBV_NAME || ' WHERE ' || iPK_FIELD || ' = ' || iPK_VALUE;
    IF iSYS_TIME_STAMP IS NOT NULL AND iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ IS NOT NULL THEN
    vQUERY := vQUERY || ' AND SYS_TIME_STAMP = TO_DATE (''' || iSYS_TIME_STAMP || ''') AND SYS_UPDATE_SEQ = ' || iSYS_UPDATE_SEQ;
    END IF;
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE vQUERY INTO i;
    vRESULT := NOT (i = 0);
    RETURN vRESULT;
    Interesting note : when Patrick doesn't pass SYS parameters (Time_stamp, Update_sequence), or passes NULLs - function always finds the record ! (Statement 2 below)
    May be it has to do with the way TO_DATE () function gets parsed in that dynamic SQL - I don't know ...
    Here's the test code :
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON;
    DECLARE
    SYS_TIME DATE;
    SYS_SEQ NUMBER;
    bEXISTS BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT SYS_TIME_STAMP, SYS_UPDATE_SEQ INTO SYS_TIME, SYS_SEQ FROM LOCATION_BV WHERE PK = 1;
    bEXISTS := CORE_PKG.RECORD_EXISTS_FNC ('LOCATION_BV','PK',1, SYS_TIME, SYS_SEQ); -- STATEMENT 1
    --bEXISTS := CORE_PKG.RECORD_EXISTS_FNC ('LOCATION_BV','PK',1, NULL, NULL);        -- STATEMENT 2
    IF bEXISTS THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('TRUE');
    ELSE
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('FALSE');
    END IF;
    END;
    I asked our DBA, he has no clue about this strange inconsistent results.
    I debugged line by line, extracted that generated SQL and ran it in same account - works fine !
    Does anyone knows or have clues or can help what's going on ???
    I don't know If this is bug in my code or strange memory behavior ?
    (Please let me know If anything unclear)
    Thanx a lot for your help and time !

  • Strange wine behavior, home directory permission change!!

    hi all, archers.
    i'm an arch user since early 2007 and this is my first post. Since now i've always found every information needed and enjoyed this great distribution.
    btw, now i have a strange behavior with last version of wine in extra repository (0.9.61).
    situation:
    clean wine install, w/o .wine prefix from previous version creation (i always redo prefix creation every new version).
    the fact:
    after wineprefixcreate, as usual, i execute winecfg for the last personalization and sound interface selection.
    fortunately and surprisingly, i notice that my home directory AND my desktop directory have completely screwed up permission. they was set to 777!!! aargh!
    my home desktop is not so critical mission but i think this is not good!!!
    after some test, i can say, in this my strange personal experience, that it's winecfg fault. wineprefixcreate don't change any permission. this happen only after the first winecfg execution AND only the first time. following execution of winecfg does not trigger the fault.
    googled anywhere but it seems that i'm the only one in the world with this wine strange behavior. Is it true? any else?
    a little report of my config:
    (multi device are all raid5)
    /dev/sda2    ext2     /boot
    /dev/md0     ext3    /
    /dev/md1     ext3    /home
    ... other devices in irrelevant mount point.
    not so strange rc.conf
    untouched /etc/skel
    not so strange gnome DE on top of GDM
    not so strange any else
    thanks in advance and good arching

  • Unable to update ios 4.3 software, trying since last 02 days...!!!

    Hi,
    I have iphone 4, since last couple of days I am trying my best to upgrade software but failed, first i thought that my broadband speed is slow, i checked it, it was around 15 mbps, i phoned to broadband service provider who checked everything and said nothing is wrong with the speed of broadband. Than i phoned to apple customer service technical department, one of the official told me that may be millions of iphone, ipad & ipod users are updating softawre that's why download process is slow and apple official advised me that if I disable the firewall of internet security than process may run fast.
    I have disabled firewall and I am trying to update software since last couple of days and result is still the same, i tried to upgrade software very early in the morning, mid of night and tried different times but i think millions of users are still updating...! in my computer itune is completing download in 8 to 9 minutes but when it completes i am recieving message in dialogue box that "my operation is timed out and download couldn't completed" its very strange. I believe its bug, apple should look it over.

    Try to download the firmware first and upgrade later as a second step.
    Make sure that your security software allows contact to Apple servers during the upgrade process:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125

  • So I decided to try and 'Edge up' since I was practically at the mark. Seemed to go fine until I select my new device, then I get 'This device does not match the device ID on your original Edge Agreement.'. Odd because I've never switched phones, and i'm

    So only a few bucks left for the edge upgrade, decided to edge up since it gave me the option to do so, I figure why not?
    Process seems to go fine until i'm in the checkout for a new device.
    Tosses 'This device does not match the device ID on your original Edge Agreement. ' at me, but it's really strange because I'm using the phone I got direct from Verizon, haven't switched phones or anything.
    Has anyone had this issue before?

    Toxicle,
    I can understand how something like this can be concerning. Let's work to get to the bottom of this for you. What kind of phone were you Edging up from? Has the phone ever been replaced or removed temporarily? Just want to make sure we are getting all the facts to help with this issue.

  • [solved] Problem with HPLip since last update

    Hi,
    since last system update my printer (HP LaserJet M1212nf) which is shared via network does not work any longer. Scanning via xsane works only printing is affected.
    Everytime if I want to print any document all I'll get is something like this:
    http://privatepaste.com/download/c84615c35d
    There isn't any error message or similar. Printing starts as expected, but the result would look like above
    hplip 3.12.4-1 and also the required plugin is installed correctly.
    kernel 3.3.7-1-ARCH
    cups 1.5.3-3
    Can anyone help me?

    I have no clue what happened between updates but it seems that my printing is borked.
    First off, details:
    HP Deskjet F4140, using the hpijs ppd file that comes with hplip. I've tried printing in LibreOffice and vim. Both produce this strange page:
    http://imgur.com/G6Ex6
    I'm at a complete loss for what to do. I've tried removing all the printers from CUPS, unplugging and replugging the printer, hp-setup, etc. I even tested the "device" tab under Printer Options and tried to make it use Postscript instead of PDF. I think there's something wrong in the configuration and I don't know where to look or what to search for on the net. I tried searching for various phrases here on the forum and the CUPS wiki page had nothing on this subject...

    What i have done is repairing the Indexingservice (Uninstall/Reinstall/Registry Cleanup) and now it seems that the indexing Service is working. But not reliable. Also my colleague has the same issue on another RDS Server.
    Same System (Win 2008 R2 with Office 2010 Pro Plus Fully Patched!) . I have also fully uninstalled Office 2010 and reinstalled it. I have used the German Version of Office 2010 32-Bit with english language.
    Cause of the Internet News, i have also uninstalled the KB3006137 Patch. No luck at all.
    We seriously Need help... We are unable to find a solution......
    Thanks for any Little help on this Case(s)...
    Best, Fab

    Interesting. I had a similar problem. I am on a 32-bit XP machine. A laptop with limited disk and RAM.
    When I updated to LabVIEW 2010 SP1, my LabVIEW 2009 SP1 started to have an error. I do not recall the error message (Microsoft Visual C something - or was it offering to open that as a debug resource . . .?). It was a Friday afternoon, so I just took the ENTIRE WEEKEND and uninstalled all NI products from my computer and reinstalled the 1st quarter DVDs from 2009, 2010, and 2011. ~36 hours of computer time later and it works great.
    That is not what I had set out to do, but I managed to get it so messed up by trying to repair then later uninstall and reinstall 2009 with 2010 there, it messed with the device drivers and toolkits until it was easier to totally start over than to try to fix it.
    I hope that is not what you wind up doing as well.
    Good Luck,
