Strange 'Entire Message' search problems on cloned external drive only

Hello,
I'm having some strange problems with the 'Entire Message' spotlight style search function in Mail.
There are various threads on the forums about a similar problem, as can be found here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9450686#9450686
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7286254
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7540966
However, here's the twist – it works perfectly fine on my computer, a late 2006 MBP with Tiger, but the 'Entire Message' search ONLY doesn't work when booting from the external hard drive, which is an EXACT clone using smart copy with super duper. Everything else works fine!
To give an example, when I type in a client's second name in Mail on my computer's HD, with 'Entire Message' enabled 400+ emails appear, when I type it in when booting from the external HD clone there was around 10 emails on the first attempt (whilst Mail was open at the same time) and there were 0 on my second clone attempt, whilst Mail and all other applications were closed. Enabling 'From' and 'To' works fine, just not the 'Entire Message' search.
I really need this critical function to work, as I'm about to loose my old computer and use it on a daily bases.
So any ideas anyone?
TIA

There's an interesting thread there:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1366101
down at the bottom there's this post by the bryceman, that sums it all up for people that don't want to fiddle around with the Terminal:
+"Thanks Julien, that Launch Services put me in the right direction too and now my Leopard Mail Entire Message Search is FIXED!!!+

+Thanks Dave. I went to Betalogue and went through all the posts and I finally found a way to fix the Search Entire Message Spotlight problem in Apple Mail - at least it worked for me. I have been trying to fix this with all sorts of solutions for months and it turns out it was related to a problem with the Launch Services Database. I confirmed this by looking inside my user/library/mail folder and seeing that inside each Mailbox folder, the sub mailboxes all had standard folder icons and not the inbox tray style icons.+
+Note that you can easily fix this through Terminal Commands, and not all the following steps are completely necessary, but there are many people looking at these threads that want to just push buttons...+
+== So here are my simple steps to fixing Apple Mail Search ==+
+1. Attach and turn on any external hard drives you have that may have a copy of Mail.app on them+
+2. Delete all OLD copies of Mail.app that you can find (don't worry about Time Machine), but make sure you keep the latest version of Mail.app in your working Applications folder.+
+~ This is so that the LaunchServices database won't easily become corrupt again+
+3. Install the latest version of Onyx - free to use and download from www.macupdate.com+
+~ I suggest Onyx, because some people don't want to mess with the Terminal.+
+4. Quit all open applications and run Onyx (it will want to check your Hard Drive etc...that's OK).+
+5. Go to the Maintenance pane and then the Rebuild tab and select only the LaunchServices box. Click Execute.+
+~ This should fix the primary problem with searches+
+6. When that process finishes, select only the Mail's Envelope Index box. Click Execute.+
+~ This should fix related problems with other searches+
+7. When that process finishes, select only the Spotlight Index box. Click Execute. (This process of Rebuilding your Spotlight Index could take hours depending on how big your hard drive is).+
+~ This will give you a clean fast Spotlight database that Mail uses for Entire Message searches.+
+8. Quit Onyx+
+9. Open Mail.app and test your Entire Message Search!+
====
+Hope that helps - it certainly, finally, did for me!+
Bryce."
If I was to do this myself, using Onyx that I've downloaded, and as described above, should I do it from the internal on to the clone? The trouble is I have 1 and a half days left with this computer and I need to use the 'Entire Message' search with mail practically that whole time as I'm totaling a large invoice for a client whilst looking at hundreds emails related to them, this is a nightmare.
Can you recommend me a cloud service that will let me download on to my emergency computer that's an old G4 Powermac with Panther? A tried ADrive and kept on getting the 302 error cod, and tried DriveHQ but it tells me to 'insert the volume related to the file' ............ these seem to work fine when downloading to my intel MBP though ....

  • Mail no longer does Entire Message search

I am no longer able to get Mail to do an "Entire Message" search. When I type a word in the Search box, the 'Entire Message' button appears "grayed out", and the only options available with All Mailboxes are From, To, and Subject. I did a Rebuild, I checked the settings in Preferences for searching Trash, Junk, Encrypted Messages (not that those should matter), I'm using a POP server, etc This seems to have just started since the 10.5.7 update. (help! thanks <Edited by Host>)

    bbbbobbb,
Quit Mail, open System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy, and add your Macintosh HD to the list. Wait a couple of minutes, and then remove your Macintosh HD from the Privacy list. You should notice (after a short delay) that Spotlight is reindexing your HD. After Spotlight completes the index, open Mail and see if your search works.

Time Machine can back up to a server. The drive or partition used still needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

on the other hand the To do button now works again
    any idea

You have not said, but I would guess you are using an IMAP account? If so, then might it be that the selection in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced has gotten changed to not keep copies of messages (and/or attachments) for Offline Viewing? The Entire Mail search will be grayed out when copies of the messages are not stored locally.

  • How do I restore the entire system from a Time Machine external drive?

    Hello everyone,
Up front - I have searched through numerous threads but have not yet been able to solve my problem - even though it is presumably easy for many.
So... I had to bring in my late 2009 27" iMac to Apple to replace the hard drive - mine was one of the thousands affected by the defective Seagate 1 TB disk recall. I was told that the disk would be cloned, but nevertheless I made a full system backup with Time Machine to a dedicated external hard drive.
A week later and I now have my iMac back - but when I boot, I only see a white screen with a pointer, so it appears that the drive was not cloned - but that I now have a blank 1 TB disk, correct?
I have also tried booting with the external drive attached, thinking that the dedicated Time Machine external drive would allow me to boot directly from it and restore the system if need be - I booted with CMD+R, tried again with ALT ... no luck.
And I cannot find my Mac OS DVDs...
So... is the drive blank, or am I missing something here?
If so, how can I boot from the external Time Machine drive, or is that not possible either?
Any pointers greatly appreciated, thanks very much in advance.

Call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD and press C key while your computer is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities menu and restore the backup.
You should have made a clone instead of the backup because Apple gives the hard disk without OS X

  • Problems booting from external drives

Ever since I got this 6-core 2013 MacPro (January 2015), I have had strange problems and glitches, but for this posting, I am talking about problems being able to boot up from external drives. I took the 4 external drives out of my old 2009 MacPro and put them into a 4-bay Thunderbolt enclosure. This enclosure can be configured as a RAID if all drives are the same (which they are not) or it can just be a place to be able to access all 4 drives. I used to be able to boot from each of those drives on the older MacPro but I am unable to do so now. They show up in the System Preferences/Startup Disk but if I choose one, it just reboots into the new MacPro drive. I even tried pulling out a couple of the drives and mounting each into a USB 3.0 (Sabrent) dock and still I could not boot from those drives which have the latest version of Yosemite. Yes, they are formatted correctly. I used to boot from them. I was able to clone one of the drives to a Seagate USB 3.0 hard drive and boot from that. Although, the clone was not perfect. It didn't transfer all my settings so I could recover some logins and serial numbers I wanted that I have never been able to retrieve since I got this new Mac.
Yesterday, I formatted a 32GB flash drive and tried to install Yosemite on it. I planned to put DiskWarrior on it. When I started to install Yosemite (from a saved download) it let me choose that drive, but when it restarted before installing, I was right back where I started on my MacPro's hard drive.
Is this normal behavior for the 2013 MacPro? Or is it just mine? I am beginning to think I may have a lemon since I have had other strange problems that don't go away.

Not all external devices are bootable. First stop would be involve whoever handles the 4-bay Thunderbolt. Seeing how it has a bridge most likely in order to support RAID mode that may not have the correct frmware or other reasons.

  • Finder behaving strangely, temporarily unresponsive when opening Apps folder, External Drive.

Hi I'm running 10.7.2 on a 27-inch iMac 11,1 (Late 2009). Everything has been working great up until a few weeks ago. I can't remember if it was after an update or what.
I have an external 1.5 TB hard drive, and whenever  try to access the drive's root (lowest-level) directory, Finder freezes up for 1-2 minutes, I can't do anything, it just stays unresponsive. If I keep a window open of that same directory and open the directory by opening a new finder window and going to the external drive, it works just fine, but this isn't an ideal work around, since it keeps me from opening the drive via the icon on my Desktop (since that would just point focus to the already-open window, and if I navigate away from the base directory, the problem happens all over again once I try to re-access the drive).
At first this was the only problem, then I noticed that the exact same unresponsive Finder would result if I tried to open the Applications folder, and then again it turns out the Documents folder does the same thing when whatever program I'm using tries to open a 'Save As..' sheet that points to the Documents folder by default, for example. This behavior renders some pieces of software super impractical to use.
Finally, lately, whenever I try to open a directory in Finder that is a sub-directory of my home directory, the directory will use the same 'View Options' as my home directory (background color, etc.). If I navigate away from the folder and back, it's styles appear as normal -- this only occurs when I open a new finder window directly to another directory that is a sub-directory of my home.
Then, I ceased having problems with the Documents and Applications directories (can't remember when), but still have problems with my external.
Phew. I'm not completely sure that the last issue is related to the main problem, but it seems likely.
Any ideas as to what's going on here?
    Thanks,
    Sam
Edit: This has been going on for a few weeks now, restarting the computer, restarting Finder, fixing disk permissions have all been tried.

I am pretty sure I used Apple's Migration Manager to move my account which easily could have pulled over some legacy CS folders in my user's Library.
After some more searching I did find a .plist file for the Adobe Application Manager by having Spotlight look for /Mars. The .plist did include the these (incorrect) paths: /Volumes/Mars. After I corrected that I was able to install InDesign in the right location and it works now.
Strange thing is that Adobe Application Manager still created the invisible folder /Volumes/Mars and put the Adobe Extension Manager in it.
Since I have a book to finish and ID is working now I won't rock the boat but I have no doubt it will hang again and a re-install is in my future. So I downloaded the cleaner-tool and will use it next time.
    Thanks
    Peter

  • Help! -Transferring content problem - Macbook to External Drive

    Hello,
I am trying to transfer and backup my entire user account content from my macbook pro to my external drive.  However it wont allow me to do it and comes up with the message:
'The operation can't be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the  items'
Please can you tell me what is wrong here and how to sort this.  Is there a way to see which items specifically I do not have permission to?  I am transfering a whole lot of content with great quantities of pics and videos.
    thanks

Just exactly how are you trying ti do the transfer...?
Have you considered using something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, so that you can have a Bootable backup...?

  • Problems booting with external drive

    Hello,
I just upgraded from an older model MacBook Pro that was happily running OS X (10.5.4) to a 2009 model that is currently running 10.5.7. There was a gap of a few months between models, though, so I cloned the old one onto an external drive and used it to boot an iMac loaner -all without any problems. My problem is that now that I have the new MacBook Pro , when I hold the option key while starting the computer in order to select the external drive, the computer reverts to the internal hard drive rather than booting from my external drive.
Any advice, suggestions to help me overcome this would be most welcome.....

If I understand your post correctly, I think the reason the new MBP won't boot from the external drive is that the OS that's on the external drive is incompatible with the new MBP. What I would try in that situation is to connect the external drive to the new computer, and then use the new computer's OS X install disk to install the operating system onto the external drive. It should then boot (though why you want to boot from the external drive is not something you explained).

  • Problem mapping USB external drive connected to Airport Extreme on my PC

I am having a problem mapping my USB external drive in my PC running WIndows Vista.   Here is what I have so far:
USB External Drive connected to my AirPort Extreme which is connected to my Century Link modem/router.
I have installed the USB drive using the Airport Utility.  In the Disks section the Enable File Sharing is checked, Secure Shared Disks is set to With a Disk Password, I have entered the password in the next 2 rows, and finally AirPort Disks Gues Access is set to Not Allowed.  The section below named These Settings Configure Windows File Sharing is empty.  Am I supposed to put something here?
I was also told I need to map the drive in my PC, but when I go to do that via the Computer and the Map Network Drive, I get stuck where it asks me to enter a folder name.  I read many of the posts which tell me I need to enter among other things the disk's ip address, but I am unable to find it anywhere.  Where do I find what to put here?
Can someone please help this frustrated user?

I had my USB drive on my APE working with Time Machine under 10.5.1 very reliably. A few days ago however, I needed to suspend a backup operation, and when I came back to restart it, time machine refused to mount the disk image on the drive. After several attempts to get it to connect with no luck I decided to delete the image (the sparce image file) and start over. Now TM refuses to create a new image.
BTW, on the Mac OSX hints site there have been suggestions to start a backup with the drive directly connected, then stop the backup, move the sparce image file to the root of the drive, reconnect the drive to the APE base station to get it working. I tried this again, but I think Apple has changed something in 10.5.2, because when directly connected TM no longer creates a sparce image file.
Anybody else seen this behavior after upgrading to 10.5.2?

  • Can spotlight search for files in external drives?

I was wondering If I can index my hard drives so that when I do a search in spotlight, they show up along with the files in my primary drive.
    Is this possible?

Yes, but due to connection reliability of external drives, and the constant background noise that is required to keep the index up to date on them, I turn it off for external drives. I use File Buddy or Easy Find to find files on external drives.

  • Problem with 2 External Drives on my new iMac

I am having a problem when I daisy-chain a second external HD to my first external HD connected to my new iMac. This is the second external HD I've tried this with, with similar problems arising.
My setup: OS 10.5.6. First external HD: G-Tech Q 1TB; 2nd External HD: also a G-Tech Q 1TB (the first time I was daisy-chaining a LaCie 250GB drive to my first external drive).
Problem: when my second external HD is daisy-chained to the first external HD my system starts to go wonky. I can't force quit apps for one. My system hangs. On reboot I don't get past the blue screen. If I remove the daisy-chain all is fine.
I initially had this problem with another external HD I tried to daisy-chain to the first. Same issue.
I was trying to partition the second external using Disk Utility. When I hit the Partition button, Disk Utility just hung with the beach ball.
When I attached a second external the first time I tried to do this all sorts of havoc ensued. A lot of apps were hanging and I couldn't Force Quit them. The whole system seemed to go wonky.
Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?

I've been doing a bit of research on these boards about daisy-chaining problems and am reading that sometimes daisy-chaining can overwhelm the Firewire bus and even corrupt data. This is what I had experienced the first time I tried to daisy-chain. Someone recommended a powered Firewire repeater (like this: http://tinyurl.com/kl84n5) would be a better solution.
Given I've got only 1 Firewire port on my iMac, what do you think?

  • Apple TV  sync problems when using external drive in iTunes

I have my iTunes library on an external drive in order to save HD space. Unfortunately the external driver some times get disconnected and I need to mount it again.
Since iTunes can not find the songs when the drive get disconnected, all songs are marked with an exclamation mark . So far no problem as the song will play immediatelly when i click on it.
The problem is now with the Apple TV. It seems that as soon as a song get an exclamation mark it get removed (!!!) from the Apple TV playlists. I would expect that the song is still available in Apple TV although in iTunes is marked with an exclamation mark, as this is only a temporary non availability.
The consequence is that one song in Apple TV may or may not be available for playing in dependency of the availability of the original song and its external drive in iTunes.
may be "its a feature", but a very annoying one..
    Alex

I believe you created this problem at the very beginning by not letting iTune to manage your iTune folder. When this occurs iTune can only play songs when your external HD is connected.
You mentioned you want to save HD space. The better solution will be to put the most played songs in your HD and let iTune manage the folder and backup all the other songs to your external HD. Best way to find out is to check out the most played from your list and backup the least played to your external HD. Better yet, backup all songs.

  • Problems partitioning an external drive

My brother loaned me his external drive, so that I could clone my hard drive onto it before I reformat my whole drive. I plugged it in, and was astonished when I couldn’t put anything on it. I dug around the net an figured out that I had to partition the drive in order to be able to change permissions and be able to read and write onto to the drive. But for whatever reason, when I hit the “partition” button an icon pops up saying that “disk could not be unmounted.” What can I do to get over this problem?

Is there data on the drive now? If so, using Disk Utility to partition it will erase all of it. In order to clone your drive to it, it needs to be clean. That is no files on it. There are commercial apps available that can partition a drive without erasing it but they cost as much as a new external drive.
Rather than clone it to an external, buy a new internal drive and install it in your G4. You can get a 80-120GB drive for less than $50 and it takes about 20 minutes to install it. With two internal drives you can have additional storage and keep all your data backed up.

  • Can a computer make problems for an external drive

I have an iMac G5 about 5 years old. All my external drives (5) are starting to give me problems. Could there be something wrong in my Mac that is hurting those drives?
    Thanks so much,

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
