Strange errors in auto-entered email addresses

I've been experiencing a recuring minor issue with my work Exchange email in Mail. This has been happening for several years and across two or three versions of OS X including Lion. When I start entering a colleague's name in the To: or CC: lines Mail helpfully offers severl suggestions to complete the address. Unfortunately the first suggestion for many people often shows their surname repeated in this format:
[first name] [surname] [surname] <correct email address>
Additionally for several people the suggestions appear in this order:
[first name] [surname] <out-of-date email address>
[first name] [surname] [surname] <correct email address>
[first name] [surname] <correct email address>
In all of these cases their Address Book entries show their names and email addresses correctly. I've also purged all entries using Mail's Window > Previous Recipients menu item and restarted Mail. I have also tried deleting my Exchange account and adding it back. Regardless the problem persists across all three of my Macs. It's usually a minor irritant but does lead to occasionally mis-addressed messages.
Any suggestions for a remedy would be very welcome.

why does aol not auto enter email addresses when I compose an email?

what a ridiculous decision to change from "starts with" to "contains".
I have a further problem - having selected the address I want from the umpteen options pulled from my address book, I then press enter to add another line for another address.....and the first address I selected changes to a completely different address!
And also addresses from the address book which previously appeared only in black now randomly appear in red.
help please!

• Unknown error in customizing eprint email address

I'm trying to customize my a-i-o eprint email adress.
I enter the website area where I can customize the email address, I put the new email address in the field and then click on verify key but the website replies with a "unknown error".
The same email address I would enter in the field was previously used with another eprint a-i-o printer, but before uninstalling that hp printer, I previously removed web services in the right way by following the instructions.
After that and each time I try to re-use the same email address I get always the same "unknown error" message.
What can I do?
Thanks

Hi montefusco,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I understand that you are trying to use an ePrint email address that you used to have for another HP printer.
Once an ePrint email address has been claimed it is no longer available to be claimed again.

• How can I get back Mail Auto-Complete email addresses?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my Mail no longer works with the auto-complete of email address.
My Contacts.app works fine, it just seems that Mail is no longer able to 'read' from my Contacts.
I use iCloud and everything was great for years. Mail preferences is set to Auto-Complete email address from my Contacts.
Not sure how the problem started, but I launched Mail on a 2nd computer - on the same iCloud.
Shortly after I did that, my 1st Mac no longer auto-completes email. I'm unsure if that is what set off the problem.
Also, I 'did' read Tom Nelson's article which did not work since it's not an 'alias' problem:
http://macs.about.com/od/MacTroubleshootingTips/qt/What-To-Do-When-Mountain-Lion -Mail-Fails-To-Auto-Complete-Email-Addresses.htm
Also, there doesn't appear to be a com.apple.mail.plist preferences file I can even delete in Mountain Lion.
I use Dropbox, but have never it to sync Addresses, Calendar, etc.
Any help greatly appreciated!

I had the same issue. After reading this solution I started poking around in the Container folder and found that there was a symlink for AddressBook that was messed up which was causing the problem. In ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application Support I ran:
$ cd ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application\ Support
$ ls -lh
AddressBook -> ??/???7??ʪ?????VT???;??\G[?:??:??????T?_Ү??
CrashReporter
Mail
SyncServices -> ../../../../../Application Support/SyncServices
iCloud -> ../../../../../Application Support/iCloud
Seeing the aliases for SyncServices and iCloud, I guessed correctly that I just needed to recreate the AddressBook alias to point to the right place. So I just removed the alias for AddressBook, recreated it, restarted Mail, and it worked perfectly. (Note: I did the following to remove the alias, and recreate it. You should confirm what you are removing is an alias. You should also always make sure you have a backup.)
$ cd ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application\ Support
$ rm AddressBook
$ ln -s ../../../../../Application\ Support/AddressBook AddressBook
Obviously, DrewSchatt's original solution to this works as well, but this way you don't have to delete the whole folder, resetting your preferences and possibly delete something else important (only recreating the alias, not deleting any files or data).

• Why can't I enter email addresses?

I registered on my Macbook last night for Facetime but I can't enter email addresses or phone numbers into those fields under New Contact. As soon as I type the first character, a red NO ENTRY sign appears to the left of the field.

The Facetime contacts list mirrors your contacts list on your Mac. To add a contact to your Facetime contacts list, you would go to your Mac contacts list and you should find it imported to your Facetime contacts . I am not familiar with a designated "new contacts" list, as I don't have that option on my iMac or iPad.

• ICal issue with entering email addresses for invitees

Hi all,
I am using 10.6.2 and I've got a very annoying issue with iCal (started on 10.5 still, and survived an upgrade to 10.6 and even a fresh reinstall, although I did restore from TM).
Anyway, what happens is that when I am entering email addresses for invitees in the events, it changes the first letter of the email address to "a". IOW, say I want to type in "[email protected]", it will read "[email protected]", then I have to go and delete the "a" and type in the correct letter. It does this all the time, with the macbook keyboard or the external keyboard. I tried deleting the .plist but it didn't help.
Any idea how I can fix it?

At what stage does it change? What happens if you start the email with a capital? What happens if you select the address from the pop-up? What happens if you drag the address across from Address Book?

• Passport does not auto complete email addresses

when typing email address, the old BB used to suggest and auto complete email addresses. Now when i start typing an email address it shows a button "LOOK UP ..." then it shows the list of possible matches once i press the button. what do i need to change to make it do matches automatically without the need for the button push.
I have seen alot of people complain about this but no solution.

Auto complete and the suggestion are two separte functions.
With the contacts in my contacts app there is no issue with me doing either.
Possible you have the email address in a different contact field?

Where does Mail keep its hidden cache of auto-complete email addresses. I am plagued with an incorrect email address I can't get rid of. Have made sure it's deleted from Contacts and made sure it's deleted from "Previous Recipients" list in Mail. But it still keeps reappearing ... obviously a secret cache file hidden somewhere?

Autocomplete has nothing to do with this problem.
From the Mail menu bar, select
Window ▹ Connection Doctor
Look for a disused SMTP (outgoing mail) account in the window that opens. Double-click it. Another window will open, showing a list of all the outgoing mail accounts. The unwanted one will be selected. Click the minus-sign button to delete it, then click OK.
If there's more than one unwanted account, repeat.

• Sending email to a user-entered email address

I would like to edit the XML so that when the user clicks on an Email Submit button, the form is sent to an email address that the user has entered into a form field. I have seen code like this on the click event
event.target.submitForm({cURL:"mailto:"[email protected] + ? subject=This form: " ,cSubmitAs:"XDP",cCharset:"utf-8"});
but can I edit the XML so that the form is sent to the email address set in one field of the form?

Hi Sean,
I haven't delved into these scripts until now. The functions are very similar to code that is auto generated by Action Builder (Tools menu).
Once the function is generated, it must be called somewhere. If you select the top node and in the script editor select "Events with script", the editor lists all scripts in the form. Control+F and search for the function name, brings up the object and event that calls the function.
Using auto generated functions to do the form validation is really neat, as it makes this new feature backward compatible.
I have updated the email buttons sample.
A word of caution. If you turn off the form validation feature in the properties dialog, LC Designer will remove the function and all of ITS calls to the function. It is unlikely to remove calls that you have put in, so events may fail because they would be calling a function that now doesn't exist.
Resources:
There is lots of help around - I would strongly recommend Creating Dynamic Forms with LC Designer by JP Terry - excellent!!
Also a book that doesn't deal with scripting at all but is very good is Forms that Work by Caroline Jarrett and Gerry Gaffney.
The Adobe PDF Forms Bible is okay, but mainly focuses on AcroForms.
Windjack Solutions have a subscription based service for solutions and scripts at http://www.pdfscripting.com. It has a lot of AcroForm script that can be amended to suit LC Designer and a growing library of LC Designer solutions.

• How do I remove incorrectly entered email addresses from my iPad emails

If an incorrect email address is entered into the address bar it is repeated over & over & often results in non delivery. How do I remove these addresses that do not appear in my contacts.

Steve

As far as I know - you can't remove them in the mail app. The mail app inssists on remembering them. You just have to ignore them and eventually they are supposed to move to the bottom of the suggested email list.

• Error when using using email address used for HP Store when signing up for ePrint

When signing up for ePrint I had to use a different email address to my usual because:
1) ePrint kept saying that my email address was already in use, or pswd was incorrect
2) When checking it wasn't the passord - using forgotten pwd (as I hadn't yet signed up for ePrint - surprised if this) then after entering same email I got a message saying the correct account was needed before the forgotten pwd function would work (catch22). I would have at least expected an email to come through regarding pwd to that email - mine or not.
I've now had to use another email address to register for ePrint, which is annoying.
Any assistance to re-align to one email (and maintain integrity) greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi msmale,
Do you have a Snapfish account? If so, (or even if you’re not sure) try logging in with the Snapfish icon below the Sign in Button. If you do not know your Snapfish password, you can select “forgot password” and an email will be sent to you to reset your password. Once you reset your password, go back in to the ePrint Center and try to sign in with this new information.

• Cannot enter email address in Iphoto to send photo, the minute I press send the email address blanks out...Help??!!

In Iphoto under sharing, in email, I enter the email address and the minute I click to send the photo, the email address goes blank. I did set up my account as in my mail account, but the problem seems to be the retention of the address in the address bar going blank. Help anyone??

This is with iPhoto as the email client, right? First try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that is unsuccessful launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it does try another test: log into another user account on your Mac and try from there. If it's reacts the same way a reinstall of iPhoto is warranted. If you can email from the other account your current account is the culprit.
Post back with the restuls.
