Strange files appear on desktop, cannot be moved or deleted.  Help!!

I have a MacBook Air (Aug 2011) and I use a 2008 version of Office on it.  Twice in the past month, a strange icon for what LOOKS like an Excel file has appeared on my desktop, each time with an alphanumeric file name.  I cannot drag them into the trash, I can't even drag them to another location on my desktop!  I can't open them with ANY application, and when I search my harddrive for their file names, they don't appear.  It's freaking me out!  I want them GONE!!  Can anyone tell me why this is happening, where they're coming from, or how to get rid of them???  Thanks.

Not sure about the shutdown problem - sounds like some application was refusing to close.
As for replacing Office, iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) do a good job and files can be exported as Office versions, but if you need the full firepower of Excel, try OpenOffice or NeoOffice (both open source).
IMO Keynote puts PowerPoint in the shade (but exported as .ppt won't retain some of the features). Numbers is easier to work with in many ways than Excel, but ultimately lacks some features (macros to begin with). Pages is more consumer-oriented than business, but it depends what you need. It's certainly pretty versatile.

  • Strange Files Appear on Desktop  and I Have No Idea Why or What They Do.

    Hello all,
For the past long while strange '.part' and '.pdf' files started appearing on my desktop and I have no idea why, how, or what they do/are for!
The files are just random strings of letters and numbers sometimes ending in .pdf, sometimes .part, sometimes both. Here is an example:
    J0f0IS2p.jpg.part
    qtz0MxdS.ai.part
    _Z8WxpbN.pdf.part
My uniformed guess thinks it has something to do with Firefox and when I download something. I recently downloaded an Adobe Illustrator file from my email, and 'qtz0MxdS.ai.part' appeared on my desktop. it has an '.ai' in it. The '.pdf' files, I think, appear when I download .pdfs using Firefox.
Does anyone know why this happens and how I can stop it? I dont think/hope its not a serious issue or bug but it does get tedious deleting all these weird files. Thanks for your time!!
    Best,
    -Reid

They occur when a Web-browser like firefox is the downloading a file. Some Web browsers download files with a different name than change to the real name when the download completes. having these funny names on your desktop means that the download did not complete or the download is presently occurring.
In firefox as you can press: command-j to see downloaded manager

  • I'm getting strange files on my desktop "0A75SC100" & "0CFSC100" when I use Firefox. Can't open or trash them..

I'm getting strange files on my desktop when I use Firefox. They have no extensions, won't open, & can't be trashed. File names such as 0A75SC100 & 0CFSC100. When I restart my computer they disappear. There does not seem to be a correlation between a website and when these files appear.
Do I have some type of virus?

    Hi Midnight
When I got my imac and used it for a while, for some reason I get .exe, .rm, .mov, and some other files on my desktop
These can safely be ignored as they are probably left over files from something you may have downloaded or only partially download or leftovers from a failed download. The same applies for data transfers
and their filenames are like dhdhdhdhdhd or sjakdshlj34338 and stuff, and when I open them, they are some of my other files I already have, but they appear for no reason. What causes this and how can I prevent this from happening.
Looking at the repitition of letters its more than likely that you are the cause – yes you! You may find it hard to believe but its more than possible that when you think you are typing something and nothing seems to be happening its because you have in fact accidently selected something on your desktop and typed there instead.
I know they are viruses because they loaded just fine
This must be a grammatical error as it does not make sense.
    Hope this helps – Tony

  • How can I delete two .jpg files from my desktop that refuse to be deleted?

How can I delete two .jpg files from my desktop that refuse to be deleted?

    Thanks.

  • Strange doc appeared on desktop

Sorry in advance if I'm being lame but a strange file just appeared on my MacBook Pro screen.
File name is 829CAB00 and it seems to have a spreadsheet icon - it just appeared, can't open it or delete it. If I try and open nothing happens. If I try and delte it says "can't move to trash as cannot be deleted".
A quick google search turned up nothing.
    Help anyone?

Well, files rarely pop up out of nowhere. Any resemblance of what you were doing when it showed up? Or just before you noticed it's there?
You should restart the Mac, I'd expect the file to be either gone or trashable then. Should it or something similar happen again, try to take note of what you are ore were just doing.

  • In FX 8 (WinXP and Linux) I'm not able to change a route of the Google Maps routeplanner via drag&drop, the markers of start and destination don't appear and therefore cannot be moved, either.

Usually (IE, Firefox 7 and below) if you go along the blue line of a route planned by Google Maps, a small circle appears which can be dragged and dropped to other roads so that the routeplanner changes the route. This is impossible with Fx 8, the circle doesn't appear and when trying to drag&drop I only move the map. The same applies to the markers which mark the start and destination of the route, they are not visible and cannot be moved. Disabling Adblock and Firegestures didn't solve the problem.
When the page is loading for a moment you can see the symbol for an image which is not yet loaded both where the markers should be and if you go along the line with the mouse. As soon as the page is completely loaded you don't see this anymore.

  • Why are MS Excel "ghost files" appearing on desktop?

Sometimes when I save an excel file, a "ghost file" appears on the desktop.  Once the "ghosting" begins, multiple ghost files will appear every time I save an Excel file.  This didn't happen in earlier versions of OSX.  (I'm currently on 10.7.4)
Can someone help stop this ghosting from happening?  I have a picture of it but didn't know where to attach to this discussion.  And btw, if I restart the computer, the ghost files disappear & the process begins all over again.
    Thanks!
    KGP

This are more then likely backups of your current open Excel workbook. There is a setting in Office, Excel, Word and the like to save the backups to a folder. Your somehow got changed to the Desktop folder in your Username folder.

  • Strange file on my desktop

I suddenly saw a file called    .DS_store on my desktop.
Ok, see it only in a translation program, suddenly appeared, because on the desktop I don t have it visible.
Anyone knows what it is, how to get rid of it if necessary? As I said, can t find it on the desktop so
I cannot drag it to the trash
    many thanks,
    Mark

.DS_store files are normally hidden in a standard Mac OSx setup as they contain various file data and resource forks necessary for OSx.
They can become a nuisance if you exchange data with Windows PCs as they are copied across but have no functionality in Windows.
Occasionally when you return the file to OSx they can become visible.
You can also make them visible with this terminal command if you want
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
    or invisible with this command
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false

  • Files appears on desktop with delay.

Hello! All my files that I save to the desktop and screenshots appears on it with delay. It takes more than 10 minutes for them to appear. But if I copy/paste an existing file on desktop or empty the trash can the screenshots appears immediately.
I have a lots of free RAM, no app running, and I have any idea

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded my OS to leopard and since i did this i have been having this strange problem? When I save a file in illustrator (CS2) it is also creating some kind second archive file (Acr1860018314.tmp for example) does anyone know what is causing this it is really annoying.

When running Apples latest operating system with an older version of Adobe applications you are likely to encounter issues that there will be no fix for. Illustrator CS2 was released over a year before Apple's OS10.5 hit the streets. Adobe engineers can not predict what will or will not work in a new OS when writing an application.
Unfortunately, the solution may be to upgrade to the latest version of Illustrator to solve your problem. I'm NOT stating that is the only solution, merely that it may be needed.

  • Clipboard files appearing on desktop?

I've noticed recently that the odd thing I copy to the clipboard (is that the right name for things you cmd + C?) have been appearing on my desktop.
I don't know what keyboard combination i keep pressing to make this happen but it's happened 4 times now.
Sometimes it's images, today I found a rtf 'text clipping'.
Im sure im not dragging stuff to the desktop.
What the heck am i doing to make this happen?
I've only noticed it since installing Lion.
Sometimes it's images from links I've copied on safari, they just randomly save to the desktop.
By the way, I'm quite an experienced computer user so I'm not doing something obvious like saving them there.

    Anyone?

  • Strange Folder Appeared on Desktop

It was a folder containing photos (NOT vulgar) of total strangers.  Looked like someone's personal photo folder.  I don't know when it appeared, I think I didn't even notice it for a couple of days.  Then I freaked out and deleted it.  My question is, how the heck did this get on my desktop?  Is this a sign that I've been hacked?

Unexplained yes, but  not a sign you been hacked.
You can always look at the Get Info (command i ) information to see where and when it originated.
If you deleted it then not much chance to sort it out.
