Strange finder icon in my dock!

I have a strange Finder icon in my dock that looks like it has a glass box over it. I know it definitely is not supposed to look like that. I have tried the following:
- Restarting
- Moving Dock from side to side to bottom
- Changing wallpaper
- Changing magnification settings

Someone posted this problem a couple of years ago. Doesn't seem like anyone had an answer then.

This is really weird.

  • How Can I Remove the Finder Icon From the Dock?

Hi! Can someone tell me how to remove the Finder icon from the dock? I don't even care if Finder quits. I just want it removed from the dock. I really don't care if I can't get to my files. Please help.

Start by going to your core services, (/system/library/coreservices). You can do this by pressing Shift+Cmd+G and then paste (/system/library/coreservices), without parentheses.
After doing this, find Dock.app, right click, show package contents. This doesn't contain the icons on your dock, just finder and trash.
After that, move all finder services to the desktop, and then erase them from the core services folder. At this point it will prompt you to put in your password, do so.
Next you'll want to open terminal and type 'killall dock' or, you could restart your computer.
This should remove the finder icon from your dock, while still giving you access to it from your desktop.
    Hope this helps!

  • I'm using a fresh install on 10.10. why when i click the finder icon in the dock a finder window does not open?

i'm using a fresh install on 10.10. why when i click the finder icon in the dock a finder window does not open?

ok, i forced quit the finder, and now when i click on the finder it opens a visible window... where did this bug come from?

  • When clicking on the Finder icon in the dock the Main Menu grays out ... what's wrong ... how do I fix?

    Product: iMac, OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
Processor: 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 32 GB 160 MHz DDr3
    Storage: 3.12 TB Fusion Drive
    PROBLEMS:
    1. When clicking on the Finder icon in the dock, the main menu grays out and the window with documents, applications etc., does not pop up.
    2. iMac is not showing up in iCloud.com and, not syncing with my MacBook Pro, iPad Mini and iPhone.
This situation seemed to appear after doing updates on my iMac.
    TROUBLESHOOTING I'VE TRIED:
    1. rebooted,
    2. repaired permissions,
    3. booted in safe-mode and let the basic tests run then rebooted to normal mode. Afterwards, the problem seemed to be corrected, however, it re-appeared shortly thereafter and still exists.

Go to the Finder's General preference pane and reset the New Finder windows show: option.  Try changing it to some other folder, try it and then back again.
If that doesn't jump start it try moving the com.apple.finder.plist file from your Home/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop, reboot and then reset the Finder preferences.
For Mavericks and Yosemite go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

  • Two finder icons in my dock and other issues

For some reason, in my dock, two finder icons are appearing. The default finder icon, which is not running and has no white indicator under it, and a default application style icon that launches right after login with the label "Finder" which is basically the finder but launches like a third party application?! When I quit the running finder icon, the finder restarts, so this second icon really is running as the finder!
Also: When i click on the trash it no longer opens, when I try to empty the trash from the dock nothing happens, and (this is the best part) when I click and hold on a stack, and select "Show in finder", Entourage launches and tries to compress that folder in an email message. Super bizarre! Like really bizarre.
Please any help would be great before I do something drastic like archive and install.
I have a screenshot of this but can't seem to post it here.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, burbaget.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.5 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

  • How do I fix a corrupted Finder icon in the Dock

    Hello,
My Finder icon has spontaneously corrupted in the Dock. The icon of the Finder.app (in the CoreServices folder) is perfectly fine and its icon the Resources folder of the Dock.app is also perfectly fine.
Yet, the icon of Finder is corrupted in the dock as shown here: http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/2973/dockimage.png and in the picture below
    Any ideas, anyone?
    My specs are as follows:

Have you tried removing all files containing com.apple.dock from the Preferences folder in your HOME Library folder and in the ByHost subfolder of the Preferences folder, then restarting the Dock (or logout/login)?
(To get to the home Library folder, hold option key down while using the Finder Go menu, select Library. Or use the "Go to Folder...." option and paste in
    ~/Library/Preferences .)

  • Finder icon missing in dock

    Hello,
The icon of finder is missing in the dock, there is still a white dot below what means that finder is still running and I can open it but it annoys me that the icon just dissappeared. I tried a lot of things like deleting the plists from the dock and finder, or open terminal and killall Dock, doesn't work either. I tried to reset my icon with candybar, searched the Core Services map and also I can't find the solution here. Logout and login won't work. I replaced the Finder icon but also that is no option. I want to find a solution without reseting or installing my OS X Lion, because I think there must be something that should work. So if there is anyone who had the problem too or knows a solution that works for real, please tell me!
    Already thanks!
    Kind regards,
    Vincent

Was it candybar that deleted your finder icon?
if so you just drag the custom icon (which is blank for the size you are using it in probably, reference picture) will POOF and your system icon should be restored. THEN you killAll Dock, which candybar does for you.
which version of CandyBar do you have? the latest is the only one that will work effectivly on Lion.
in icon composer, and when you preview an icon, you'll see that it is really a container with multiple images. A reason why your icons are coming up blank might be that the spaces for the the other icon sizes are empty. if you go into Icon Composer, you can drag in the other sizes and save as an ico. Then you'll have a working icon.

  • Moving Finder icon in the dock.

Well, I'm asking this out of hope rather than necessity, but don't really expect there to be a solution.. oh well.
I was using my mac as usual the other day, when it suddenly started irritating me that my applications, documents, and downloads stacks were over on the far right of the dock, behind a split separating them from all the icons I've chosen to have in my dock, but the finder icon was over at the far left.
To me, at least, it would make more sense for the finder icon to be over on the right with the other icons that are more functional in purpose; a bit like a horizontal stack, with the functional on the right, the separator, then my icons on the left..
It's probably just me, though. I don't know; is there any way of moving it?
    Thanks, Ed

Thanks, this solved my problem! ..
Honestly though, I'm not sure if you were trying to helpful or offensive. By "functional" I meant things relating to directories and documents. ie. Finder, Stacks and the trash. I admit it wasn't a good choice of words.
I'd much prefer them all to be nicely together, allowing my favourite apps to dominate the left hand side; if I'm looking for a file, I go to the right, if I'm opening an app that isn't related to browsing the computer for files, I go left. Easy.
On a side note, I would have happily followed your instructions if I could have dragged the least "functional" icon off of it..

  • Strange stacks icons and weird dock behavior

I got leopard for Christmas and on the first day of the install my icons on the right side of the dock- i guess the stacks for applications and downloads icons look weird. It's not a combination of all the icons in the stack like someone else wrote, it is a weird green, white, red rectangular shaped image with weird black and grey squiggles going through the middle. Also-I'm not sure how to describe it but what used to be a clear line I guess to separate the stacks stuff with the other icons on my dock it's next to about this mac icon on my dock has turned into a weird pink rectangle with a really small picture of the weird red, green, and white rectangle on top. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My husband is a windows guy and after me bragging about how much better mac is, I don't want him to know that I'm already having problems with leopard

No, this is not "normal behavior." The problem is that it is not consistent, either, so it is hard to tell what is going on. It may happen after using some full screen programs, but I am not sure. I am not able to reproduce the issue, myself. It just happens from time to time.
The icons are not changing after they are used. The ones in the download folder will usually have their normal appearance, the dmg file or a pdf file with its "preview" icon or whatever. Then, for some reason, I will notice some of the icons have become blocky and pixilated, not resembling anything, usually almost a solid color.
Again, the way to get them to change back is to remove the downloads folder from the doc and return it. Then all the icons return to their normal view.

  • Use Finder icons in the Dock?

The Finder sidebar has these really swell icons for certain standard folders:
Nice and clear and distinct from each other. The Dock icons for the same folders:
are not so swell as the Finder versions. Too similar to each other for me.
Is there a way to make the Dock use the same icons as the Finder?
    -tom

you can use [CandyBar|http://www.panic.com/candybar>(shareware) or [Liteicon|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32346](freeware) to change system icons including dock icons.

  • Finder icon in dock is corrupted

    Hi all
Today I had the dreaded "dock keeps crashing" problem. That was due to a few photoshop jpgs I put on the downloads folder which weren't properly previewed. After I moved them away, the dock came back, however the finder icon has been damaged somehow.
See the picture (upper border): http://i3.tinypic.com/7x8qedc.png
When I switch apps (command + tab), the same damaged icon is there.
How to get my nice finder icon back to normal?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
The resource image for the Finder icon in the Dock is located here:
    HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/finder.png
Control-Click on the Dock app and choose from the contextual menu, "Show Package Contents", to access the Contents/Resources Folders and the Finder .png image is there.
Drag the finder.png file to the Preview app in the Dock to open it. (If you have Preview there, if not you can find it in the Applications Folder of your HD).
Does the image look corrupted in the Preview window?
If yes, then this file will in all likelihood need to be replaced with a good one. We'll look into that if necessary.
If no, then all you may have to do is trash your Dock Preferences. Go to:
    +HD/Users/(Your Home Folder)/Library/Preferences+
Drag the "com.apple.dock.db" and the "com.apple.dock.plist" files to the Trash but do not empty the trash.
Restart your Mac. You will probably have just the Default set of icons in your Dock afterwards and so you will have to put the ones back that you want. If you have any problems then put the files from the Trash back into the Preferences Folder, replacing the other ones...Restart...your Dock should be back as was.
(You can also drag the finder.png file to the Desktop. It will automatically make a copy there).
This should be enough to get you going. Report back.

BTW- Be careful in the System Folder.

Navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Finder icon on dock PROBLEM!

    Hi.
After re-installing os in my computer, i observed that when clicking on finder icon at the dock, no finder window is opened. But a new window is open when you use the (Apple+N) keyboard shortcut. No idea that what´s happening. Anyone can help me?
    Many thx.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried trashing Finder prefs?
Navigate to /library/caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxx.csstore. You may have more than one with different negative numbers. Delete all of these.
Then navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and delete this also.
Then log out and back in. Or restart. Let us know.
