Strange Firefox artifacts

Over week ago after system upgrade I have strange Firefox artefacts (and other xulrunner based apps). Does anybody know the reason and  the solution
I use testing repo. I thought that it is because pango either cairo or poppler, but all of them are 'stable'
btw. this situation pushed me to use Midori which seems to be very nice browser (powered with userscrpts.org)

toad wrote:I had that when I used testing and my video driver got updated. Reverting back to the old one worked for me.
In fact I use
xf86-video-ati
from Testing repo. I try to submit it as a bug.

  • Strange pattern artifacts

I have been concentrating on newer images since getting LR and this does not happen with shots from my newer camera, but I went through some older images today and found something that wasn't there before LR. I am getting a strange pattern artifact, like a maze, when viewed at 1:1. It shows up in areas from mid and brighter and makes edges very jagged. These same images looked fine when using ACR 3.6 and earlier.

Maybe while previes were being built?

  • Strange display artifact

I have been seeing a strange on-screen artifact and wonder what kind of problem this indicates.  I'm using a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon running OSX 10.6.8 with the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card and an Apple 23" Cinema HD display (2 actually).  The artifact shows up in the top corners of the Firefox browser window and in the top corners of the Apple Mail application window.  They don't appear at startup, but later in the day.  The artifacts look like this (3 jagged lines in the very corners):

    Grant,
First of all, thanks for replying.  I can understand that the jagged lines are not screen artifacts, but I didn't know what else to call them.  Can you offer some more details about why these marks could be due to a third party application?  I'm not asking what you think they mean because you already stated you don't know; I'm asking how such marks could be produced by any application running on a computer when the marks aren't part of any kind of normal operation of any application that I've ever seen.  BTW, the third-party gadgets you saw belong to Color Munki screen calibration, Stuffit Deluxe magic menu, Intego Internet Security menu and Intego internet incoming/outgoing traffic monitor.

  • Strange digital artifacts at the end of each song importing via iTunes

I've tried a few variations on archive searches and wasn't able to find an answer to this: In ripping some of my CD's into iTunes (either Apple Lossless or WAV) I've been getting some very odd, brief digital artifacts at the end of each songs on a CD. This sounds like two or three seconds of an audio tape on fast forward. It only seems to happen on new releases (I cannot think of any older CD's it's occurred on). I just got a copy of Mary Gauthier's new album (great CD by the way) and it happened on that one, for example. I tried ripping it multiple times in Apple Lossless, and WAV (always in iTunes) and each and every time it created files where this strange artifact existed at the end of every song. I play the CD I ripped the files from and the artifact is not there. I have several CD's, most of them recent releases over the past five years, that do the exact same thing. Otherwise everything else functions perfectly an the bulk of my 700+ CD library has imported without a hiccup. Is this some kind of anti-piracy technology...or do I simply have some setting off in my itunes preferences (Error-Correction is on, WAV or Apple Lossless is always set to Automatic, have experimented with importing to startup disk and external disk-same results). The artifacts seem to always sound the same too...they never vary, except that they sound different from song-to-song, but the same if say, the first cut is played over again. They are always 2 seconds plus or minus, and always at the end of a cut (the final 2 seconds or so). They do transfer verbatim to my iPod, and also play via iTunes through my stereo.
Anyone have any clues what this might be?

As a follow up, I went to the Genius Bar for a bowl of Mensa Stew, but only got some tepid broth. Here's what transpired:
The girl I was speaking with suggested that the artifact was the software misinterpreting information between the cuts. It was only a theory. She had not heard of any other incidents to relay. First she suggested I rip as MP3's. I explained that wasn't an option for me. She listened to a few cuts on a CD I'd brought with, or rather the ends of the cuts and confirmed there was a problem with the rip. She went through my settings, and asked if I'd tried it with Error Correction turned off. I explained I hadn't and that I preferred to use it. She suggested attempting to rip one of the cuts with it turned off just to see how it did. We did that and no artifact was there. So her 'solution' was to either leave error-correction turned off always, or turn it off for those problem CD's that produce the artifact (I'd estimate about 5% do on my laptop). This did not explain why it was doing it, nor why my g5 tower, which is running a carbon-copied system with all the same iTunes settings, does not produce the artifact with Error-Correction turned on.
I'd be interested to hear of anyone else who's been having problems importing hi-rez files in iTunes. I know of at least one other instance where the artifact produced (on a MacBook) is dis-similar to mine in that it takes the form of brief electronic beeps moving from channel to channel.
    Anyone else?

  • Firefox artifacts

    Hi
for some time now I've got a lot of artifacts with firefox, like images having some lines [left,right]-shifted, black lines in the code templates at this forum (those things you make with [ code ][ /code ]), faulty drawn widgets, ...
I've made a screenshot to show you some of them, if you look closely at the seventh until ninth tab (CERN until Wikipedia on Dirac) you can see that their bottoms are drawn differently than all others. This is how tabs are drawn when they've been hovered by the mouse, otherwise they look like the others (and they get reset when firefox looses focus).
You can also notice that the scrollbar on the left of the "More of ..." menu is drawn faulty...
These are minor stuff but they are pretty annoying because they appear so frequently... Is anyone else experiencing this? I might file a bug one of these days, I couldn't find one about this yet.

  • Strange rectangular artifacts on screen

I just upgraded from OS 10.4.10 to 10.5.6. I'm getting strange black rectangular artifacts that go away when the screen redraws. They look like invisible strike areas for Flash buttons. These black rectangles are very distracting and annoying. Has anyone else encountered this? I have screen captures I can send to anyone if my description is not clear.
    Thank you.

    Hi LG Smith;
Check in System Preference > Universal Access and see if you have VoiceOver turned on. This can do it. Sometime an Upgrade can change system preference for you.

    A GOOD IDEA.
Just disable the resizing windows option within compizconfig settings manager

  • Get strange banding/artifacting whenever camera moves

    Hello,
I'm trying to build a simple DVD of a movie project I edited in Final Cut Pro. I have been doing this for several years and don't recall ever coming across this sort of problem.
On a static shot the image looks fine. But whenever there is camera movement I am getting this awful banding or artifacting (not sure how to describe it really) in the edges of the subject on the screen. Especially if both the camera and subject are moving simultaneously. Once the camera lands it looks ok again.
My normal workflow is to export a self contained Quicktime movie out of Final Cut, Import into Compressor, then create the files for DVDSP.
I have experimented with different compression methods:H264, Photo JPEG, Apple Pro Res, etc. All of the movie files look great playing in Quicktime or FCP, but then when I use Compressor to convert to AC3 and M2V for DVDSP4 this issue occurs. I am using the DVD Best Quality 90 Minute preset in Compressor. I see it both on my Apple 30" Display as well as both of my Flat Screen TV's (one is LCD and one is Plasma).
I have experimented with DVDSP bit rates and still get it.
    Any ideas?
    Many Thanks,
    Peter

Ok, then you need to do as I described in the previous post.
After dropping the 4:3 timeline into the 16:9 timeline, scale it to 133% (you have to sacrifice resolution if you want to fill the 16:9 frame). You may need to vertically re-position certain parts of your content. Do it by moving the clip up or down in the 16:9 timeline, not in your original 4:3 timeline. After you are done, export using "current settings" and encode in compressor. If you stay within the DV-domain, and use same framerate and lower field in both timelines, field order will not get swapped, and your m2v will look fine.
    Another edit:
A little late, maybe, but - if this is only watched on a computer monitor, nothing of what I have written will change what you see. This only applies when played on an interlaced TV. Still very important to get right tho.
If you want to lose the fields and thus fake a progressive image, you need to apply the de-interlace filter to all your footage in FCP.

  • Strange screen artifacts on 15-MB Pro (Mid 2010)

I have a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display connected to my Mid-1010 MB Pro (with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB), and since upgrading to Yosemite the screen on the MB Pro cycles continuously through gibberish content, especially in the menu bar, but often on the main portion of the MB screen as well. The problem never manifests itself on the connected Cinema Display (my main monitor), but the MB display, where I park tool palettes when using graphic software, has become almost unusable.
I've tried messing around in the Display tab in System Preferences, have reset the PRAM, but so far nothing I've tried has resolved this issue. Anybody have any troubleshooting tricks I might try?

I agree with the optical drive, mine acted strange, and i thought people were crazy and my drive was shot, but a simple cleaning disc worked miracles.
But- are you trying to reboot with both the USB install and the DVD install both plugged in?  that would definitely cause confusion.
Do this, reboot with NOTHING plugged in.  Once you hear the Mac chime, immediately press and hold option.
You should only see the Mac HD, and Recovery Partition.
THEN plug in your external DVD, and wait a min or two, you should see a disc icon appear next to the recovery partition that says something like windows.  If that doesnt appear after a min or two, unplug it and put the USB stick and do the same thing.  I had to do it this way on my mid 09 MBP.
Let me know if this works to start the install.  If not we may have to start over with Bootcamp Assistant

  • Strange Firefox problem

So I have a weird problem on my iMac, running 10.5 and using Firefox 2. I have the same exact setup on my MBP, but on my iMac when I try to right click an image I get NO context menu. Has anyone else ever had this problem? I've tried messing with all the FF preferences, even wiping it out totally and re-installing. I can right click the page, or text, and get the relevant context menus, but when I try on an image, nothing. But I can go to the same page with my laptop, and not have this problem.

You might take a look at FireFox v3 b4. It's very stable and is getting support from many of the Extension authors. Mozilla rates it as very stable and has posted a public download for it. It's much faster than v2 and has been rock solid on my Mac's and Windows machines for over a week now. I really like it's default theme for Apple...
It won't solve your problem with v2, but I'm not having the problems with v3 either:

  • Strange Screen Artifacts During Startup

    Hi,
Just a couple of weeks ago, I started getting this weird screen during startup (after the light blue screen and just before the desktop shows).
I already tried unplugging everything, and havealso done a full hardware test (pressing 'D' after inserting disc 2 and doing a full hardware test which showed there was nothing wrong with my hardware).
My unit is a new (2011) Macbook Pro, 17" (sandy bridge, with 8GB of RAM). I unplugged 1 terabyte WD external drive, and unplugged my Wacom Intuos4 tablet, and also switched off AirDisplay (app for iPad), and unplugged everything else except bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The same thing occurs.
Any idea and help would be appreciated.

This problem still exists, even after (Thunderbolt) firmware update. It seems to come out when powering up the machine, after the light blue screen that follows the Apple logo.
(This issue doesn't seem to come out during a restart).
    Er, help?

  • Strange artifacts

First point - if anyone is looking for really crisp deinterlacing - use the frame controls with 'antialiasing'and 'details'set to about 75% - Yes is will take an age, but plan for it, and the results are very good indeed - in my view better than Bit Vice or anything else.
One problen however, I am encoding a program, the start of which consists of 3 seconds of black. Using frame controls deinterlacing, with 'progressive' set, and 'antialiasing' and 'details' set to around 50%, the black at the beginning is ruined by strange, static artifacts. Using heavy antialiasing results in a lot of green patterns, the arrangement of which predict the first scene.
By setting the antialiasing to a lesser amount - around 50%, the problem is less severe, however the black still contains about 10 'digital blocks' of random static noise. This disappears soon after moving material appears on screen.
    Anybody else come accross this?
Is this a bug which only affects frame controls deinterlacing?
    Is there a work around?
Apple or somebody, please advise, because this is spoiling an otherwise great result.

Is the static something like this:
    http://www.uiah.fi/~tolahti/antialias1-details50.tif
That material is converted from mpeg2 to lossless SheerVideo codec and that point there is no green noise.
Then compressing to h.264 with compressor2, the noise appears in scenes which have lots of black if there's anti-aliasing used at all.
My example is from music video that was show in 16mm and these very contrasty scenes were shot also with fast shutter angle (90 degrees) and handheld. So it's quite hard to compress efficiently.
Video bitrate was restricted to 1800kbitps.
Anti-alias was set to 1 and Details Level to 50.
So, it seems that somehow anti-aliasing is changing the picture in RGB-format and green channel flips over from time to time.
Maybe it happens only when black level is below "broadcast black" (16,16,16), but it really should be allowed to use pure black (0,0,0) in computer and web platforms.
Is there any official place to send info to Apple about these bugs?

  • Strange Artifacts with Brightness/Contrast Filter

I've applied the brightness/contrast filter to several stills and then on the last 6 frames, I pump the brightness to 100 to create a flash transition. However, on several of these, I'm getting very strange black artifacts after rendering. They appear on the edges of the frame.
They're not there before rendering, so it's not because that's what the image is supposed to look like at 100 brightness.
Has anyone ever experienced this or have any ideas how to fix it?
    Thanks!
    Cameron

Interesting development. I got a different transition from Eureka! plugins that's basically the same as the Buena one except it doesn't crash my system. Rendered it, and lo and behold! Same problem. The same kind of artifacts show up on the edges. The problem with cropping it is that then I just have to re-render and the artifacts come up again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Weird screen artifacts after QT update

Ran the QT 7.1.5 / iTunes update this morning on my 10.3.9 Power Mac G5 and now I'm getting strange video artifacts. For example: the toolbar area of Firefox is no longer white - it's a crosshatched gray, almost like I was running in lo-res, but the main browser window looks normal. Other programs exhibit the same type of artifact - but only in certain parts of their windows. Also, the "hand" cursor looks like it's made up of dots, like pointilism. Everything works fine, just looks weird.
I repaired permissions, reapplied the 10.3.9 combo update, and reapplied the QT 7.1.5 update. No change. I can go into the Display preferences and switch from millions of colors to 256 and back again - and then things look fine, until I quit and relaunch the program. Then the artifacts are back.
Anybody have any ideas? I hope I've explained this sufficiently. I have a screen shot of this but don't know how to post it.
    Thanks!
