Strange firmware situation

I checked the apple article that explains the latest firmware updates for intel macs.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303880
What is strange is that mine should look like this...
MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo 15-inch) MBP22.00A5.B00 1.12f5
My SMC version is correct (1.12f5) but instead of the boot ROM version for the 15 inch, it actually has the boot ROM version of a MPB C2D 17-inch (MBP21.00A5.B01).
I am not having any issues. However, I wonder if it could cause problems in the future.

I have the same thing on my MBP 15"...

  • Strange Facetime situation

    Hello everyone.
So my gf bought her factory unlocked iphone 4, and we have been trying out facetime quite alot lately. And we noticed a strange situation and it seems very consistent.
Whenever I call her FaceTime from my MBP Pro (Beta version of facetime), I ALWAYS have to call her twice to get the video thru. The first time I called, we can only get voice, and I have to immediately hang up and call back to get the video part. Vice and versa.
Does any of you have this problem?
    What gives?
    Thanks
    iphone 4, iOS 4.3.3

I'm not, but the FaceTime beta for the Mac is obsolete. Why beat your head against the wall troubleshooting it when it may be fixed in the current version?

  • Strange Firmware trouble

    Hello,
I wanted an iTunes (and DNS) Server in my flat for a bit of a comfort. OK, gone to eBay and bought a 266 MHz (Orange) G3 - iMac.
I wanted to update Firmware prior of installing MAC OS X and here the trouble starts. I downloaded the FW Update 1.2 from Apple,
    * started it,
    * shut down,
    * got a paper clip,
    * pushed it in the hole,
    * started up,
    * got the long tone,
    * removed the paper clip.
So far so good - my iMac didn't perform the update.
So repeated the whole thing - after deeply reading the instructions again - no update.
I tried that three times - no update is performed.
I pressed OPTION-OF at startup and Open Firmware showed me a Version of 3.0f anything. So I thought ok, the update is not performed due to the FW is current.
    Then I installed Panther.
And here the trouble starts. The iMac is always booting into Open Firmware.
I checked the settings and it is showing me two partitions on one the boot-command is mac-boot, on the other (left...) the boot-command is bootr which does seem to be causing the trouble. The auto-boot switch is set to true and the Diag switch is not set - as far as I know OFW.
    What I did then?
    * I zapped the PRAM several times,
    * used the "reset me all-over" button on the motherboard directly,
    * used "reset-all" and "reset" on Open Firmware,
    * set the boot-command with nvsetenv and with
    * sudo nvram boot-command=mac-boot.
Currently I have a job scheduled that performs a "nvram boot-command=mac-boot" in the crontab. Due to it is some kind of server I have a power on and power off time scheduled. So I have set the task to push that out short before it switches off.
I have a Bondi blue here with the same Harddrive and even Panther installed and the same Firmware and it is working correctly. Is there any way to help me or even a workaround allowing me to push that nvram command at boot-up. Even that would help.
    iMac G3 (233/266/350/400)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Ron,
first of all, I did it!
I knowingly used the Restore CD not the Software Install CD thinking of getting a very clean, Apple compatible OS install. I now downloaded the OS 8.6 Update, performed the 1.0 ROM Update, rebooted and tried to install the new Firmware - no success.
I was in despair cause I used really the same File for the update on the Bondi Blue (kept it on the disc - but downloaded a new copy - trying both) but with OS 9.1. I tried OS 9.1 and 9.0.4 on this machine before, didn't work either. I installed OS 8.5 due to your advise.
Then I crawled through the Old Software downloads on the Apple site. I found plenty of Firmware updaters. Some in the Multicountry folder which seems to be the one you can still officially download and one - now it gets interesting - in the German folder. Due to having a German OS (what else ;-)) I downloaded this file (D-iMac Firmware Updater 1.2).
I copied it to the iMac and started the Update. OK, the Dialogue is German... who cares...
It shut down and I done the paper clip action. After another startup tone
THE MAC WAS APPLYING THE UPDATE (sorry for screaming)
Now it is 3.0f2 from 1999
Booted into OS 10.2.8 then nvram -p and I see a "mac-boot". Rebooted three times - no Issues.
This is hillarous....... I really used the Multicountry version on the Bondi Blue and a German Mac OS (you cannot get an english, french or anything else here). Working fine. OK, I got this iMac from an Italian Guy but this doesn't say anything, or? Just kidding.
Thanks to all of you and especially you Ron for your Brainstorming. It helped me very much thinking about the Issue......and for all the others out there, sometimes you need a localized version of the Firmware updater for the older Tray loading iMacs...if everything else fails.
Now I need someone telling me how to power on a 10.2.8 timed/automatically like 10.3.9 can do but this is another topic.

  • Strange foreclosure situation

I'm in a strange position.  In 2009 I went through a foreclosure.   Long story short, a few years later that foreclosure was found to be part of the wrongful foreclosures by several banks and was part of the federal settlement.  One of the terms of the settlement was that the foreclosure and any negative reporting regarding the foreclosure would be removed from the credit reports of affected individuals, which it has been.  There is no record of the foreclosure in any of my credit reports.  In fact, there is no record of any mortgage at all in any of my credit reports.  The thing is, I am not in the process of becoming a licensed mortgage banker, and part of the licensing is to disclose certain financial information.  I responded yes to the question "have you had foreclosure action brought against you in the past 10 years?"  However, now I am wondering if I am answering this question correctly.  With it wiped from my credit report, is it still considered to have happened?  Do I need to disclose it?  I have also heard from others that they are unable to get new mortgages without their credit reports accurately reflecting the foreclosure.  Sounds crazy!

This is an ethical question related to your future employment. Yes, the foreclosures were wrongful. But in a literal sense, it is true that a "foreclosure action" was brought against you--even if it was a wrongful one. The most straight-forward thing to do seems to be to disclose the foreclosure but mention that it was invalidated. Cite the case.

  • Strange spam situation.

Starting a few days ago, I've been getting spammed a couple times a day. The weird thing is the "To:" field always reads something different (none of them being my e-mail address). Here are the ones I've gotten so far:
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
Only thing I can see is that most start with an 'm', same as my e-mail address. What's the story on this?

An email will be sent to any address listed in the To, Cc, and Bcc fields; the Bcc field is only visible to the sender, and is often used by spam and opt-in newsletters.

  • Strange font situation in Keynote

I just upgraded to Yosemite and the latest version of keynote. I opened a presentation I previously created in the last version of Keynote and a weird thing is happening with fonts not appearing correctly. I attached 2 screenshots to illustrate what's happening, I drew red circles on the one to show where its happening, the other is pretty apparent.

Seems to have something to do with the Character Styles, getting the same thing there.

  • Wallstreet strange battery situation

Having a problem with a battery with wallstreet. Was supposed to work in another wallstreet, but cannot verify. Inserted battery into 10.2.8 and read 86% and charging. Charged to 100% and had 4 lit LED lights. Unplugged the AC and worked off battery for about 10 minutes and then complete shutdown. Connected AC and rebooted, battery at 96% and charging and charged to 100%. Once again removed AC and lasted about 2 minutes and then complete shutdown. Rebooted and now battery shows 100% all the time and if I remove the AC, it goes to immediate shutdown. Boot into 9.2.1 and run the battery reset v2. It goes straight into the reset without asking to reboot. It says the battery is reset. I remove the battery, wait a few minutes, and reinsert the battery. I have a battery icon with white on the top third, blue on the last two third, and a red line with arrow on the bottom. No lightning bolt for recharging, after about 3 minutes it goes to a solid red battery. And now the test button only shows one blinking LED light. Reset PRAM and Power Unit does not do any good. Any suggestions?

    Jean,
Your internal rechargeable backup battery will not cause this behavior. Your symptoms are typical of a dying lithium ion battery. There are two important measurements with batteries...volts and amperes. The Jeremey CSM is measuring volts but not amperes; it also will not measure watts if selected.
On my 800MHz iBook running OSX, I installed a utility called 'coconutBattery' and it measures mAh (milliamperehours). When new, my iBook battery had a 4000 mAh capacity, but is now down to 1842 mAh with a corresponding drop in runtime. However, the battery still charges to a full 16.4 volts. Your battery still charges to 15 volts but it no longer has any capacity (mAh) left. Also, a new battery will probably charge to 16.5 volts, at least the replacement I bought for my Wallstreet does. I think you can be safe in replacing the battery
By the way, I don't know of any utility that measures battery amperes in OS 9.x.

  • Strange applet situation

I have an applet (code below) that was compiled like so:
    javac -target 1.1 DigiClock.java
that class is then used in the applet tag.

Are 'others' running it from a webserver somewhere or off local filesystem? If running from local filesystem you will get an AccessControlException when reading the image.

  • Strange flicker situation

    Hello All
I have used stll video images before and I have used the flicker filter to get rid of the video flicker or jitter that you get with still images.
But I have this flicker problem I can't get rid of. I added a couple of matte shot to the timeline. So the first video track was a full screen black and white image. The second track was a still of a person that I cut out with a matte filter (Tom's 50 point matte which is really excellent by the way). To that matte shot I added a drop shadow. So the still matte image is fine, but it's the drop shadow that flickers. I have tried every thing but can't seem to get rid of it.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Mike

    Hello Al,
Yes, I have tried that filter.

  • I need more INPUT (not MENU) languages in my E90!

Though E90 Communicator is awesome in majority of functions, usability and comparatively perfect in production quality, it lacks some features that I as business-user definitely need.
The most disappointing issue for me is the language issue. While the "normal" phones have 6 to 8 languages pro firmware/product code, the E90 has only 3!!! (Maybe 4 in APAC region but i do not care.)
I'll try to explain shortly. As a businessman who lives in Germany and is a native Russian-speaker, I have a LOT of partners/clients/friends who do prefer to have a communication profile with me in Russian. I have almost the same amount of people with whom I need to communicate in German or French. The tragic truth is that I cannot approach this with the actual firmware situation on E90.
If I would buy my Nokia E90 in Russia, I would get the predefined languages of English, Russian and Ukrainian. That is nice, but in this case I cannot write in German as it should be written, saying with Ö, Ä, Ü, ß and so on. I also could not use some of the French special characters. If I would use E90 only as a SMS machine, it might be OK. But I use it more likely as a travel PC replacement the device pretend to be, so I use e-mail and document editing, where the lack of those characters are intolerable.
Besides all, I live in Germany and am a client of German service provider, so why should I probably buy the device outside of Germany? So think I and so I doing, saying I renewed my service contract and bought the E90.
In German firmware I got another three (!!!) languages: German, English and Turkish. Wonderful. I may speak out about the pure discrimination from the Nokia side: in Germany we have the same amount of Russian speakers as Turkish fellow ones, both about 8,000,000 persons each. ;-) So why Turkish and not Russian, Italian or French? Every of those "communities" has equal rights, am I right?! Hei, Nokia! Do you hear my voice?!
Is it really so hard to understand, that an ULTIMATE BUSINESS SOLUTION as E90 definitely would be preferred by the people, who really use it - really intensive - as a communication device?! Is it really hard to understand, that thousands of them would get e-mails and documents while on the road that definitely need to be urgent answered some other language than 3 preinstalled?! Should I change the firmware of my phone every time I need to answer e-mail in French or edit the financial contract for my Russian partner?!
Ridiculous and disappointing - what else should I say?! Especially because I know, that the situation as easy to fix from the Nokia side as a single mouse click.
I am sure there are people reading and writing to this Forum who needs for example Chinese Mandarin and German, or Hindi and Farsi, or Arabic and Spanish simultaniously. There is no way to understand why it is impossible to choose the INPUT languages - I do NOT speak about the MENU languages and never pretend to.
So, because this Forum is Nokia's piece of land and Nokia has kindly allowed us to cry out here what I do really appreciate, I want definitely get the answer to following questions:
    1) Is it possible to add some INPUT (once again - NOT menu, just INPUT) languages to E90 firmware?
    2) If yes, when?
    3) If not, what is the reason? The reason - please, no "technical excuses", because I am not that stupid, OK? ;-)
We are living in such a damn globalized world, aren't we? So let's be really globalized and let's help us ourselves to get out the most from this.
    Thanks to all for listening.

Since Windows 98 is absolutely not a problem to add ANY input language in ANY localized version of the OS. I do know that Symbian OS has at least the same flexibility options.
Once again: I do not pretend to have any other MENU language - I simply do not need it. But the possibility to choose more INPUT language is simply and quickly to add, that is what I am asking for.
Maybe your statistic research is right, I do not want to argue with you. More than that, this is exactly I expected as an excuse option: "Marginal request". But no, it is not. The device would probably have higher customer interest when the free input would be represented.
Your advice to use laptop instead of E90 is highly appreciated, but it is not unique enough to be accepted "as is". ;-) The idea of E90 as well as previous communicators was to give the customer an option to leave her/his laptop at home and make a 1 or 2 day business trip as lite as possible in every meaning of the word "lite". I have 2 laptops already, 1 Panasonic for traveling and IBM Z61p Workstation as a desktop replacement. I should say that Panasonic, while being one of the best travel-oriented devices on the market, with its almost 2 Kilo travel weight and about 1 minute power-up/power-down time is completely insufficient as a communicator replacement. In addition to it you need a businesscard-scanner and a digicam, you are constantly out of power and so on. It is or will be the same story with UMPC. The only option until now was HTC/Qtek 9000, the most powerful and well-equipped device on the market. But it is completely useless as a phone and its camera is a disaster, so I switched to E90 because of its awesome usability as a phone, a digicam and as a communicator simultaneously just because I HATE to carry on 12 hours a day here and there a 5 Kilo bag with laptop, phone, camera, cables, batteries and other damned stuff around. I am just SICK and TIRED of this and I dreamed about the device that can make free from all that - for YEARS!!!
I remember my conversation with Nokia people at its CeBIT Stand in late 1990-es - the concept was already here, but the materialization of my dreams took Nokia R&D almost a decade. And now, when it is already in my hands, it lacks such a damn little thing to be as perfect as possible! ;-)
I am not that crazy - "perfect" does not mean really perfect. Of course there are and there would be minor and major bugs with later fixes and improvements. Because of the possibility of fixes and improvements I insist on one of the most critical for me. I understand as well, that it needs neither additional research nor hardware changes. All you need to to do is a little software module to be added and/or replaced. The Occam Razor Rule is still in my mind. ;-)

In some versions of Oracle (certainly all of the 8.x versions and earlier, and possibly some of the earlier 9 versions) the SQL parsers in the SQL engine and in the PL/SQL engine were different. Some features that worked directly in SQL did not work in PL/SQL. Scalar sub-queries were one of those things.
You have three options. You can try to re-write the insert statement to eliminate the PL/SQL unimplemented feature. You can create a view in the database for the SELECT part of the insert statement then use that view in the insert. finally, and least desirable, you can build the whole statment as a string, and use EXECUTE IMMEDIATE to run it in PL/SQL.

  • Brand new ipod touch, $10 to get 2.0!

Ordered Monday (on my son's AppleID as part of buy a mac, get an ipod free). Delivered yesterday, registered this morning (using my AppleID). Had it laser engraved and my son tracked it from China->Alaska->... so we can be somewhat certain it isn't month old stock that was sitting in shrinkwrap somewhere.
Now Apple wants $10 to upgrade it to 2.0! QCC?
Why didn't it come with 2.0 already installed?
Apple/iTunes is apparently smart enough to figure that his six month old ipod touch wasn't eligible for upgrade based on this new purchase, but not smart enough to tell that the new one should be free?

    Hi,
It is easy to understand your annoyance and hindsight is 20/20 but had I been ordering a new Touch I would have checked and double checked the firmware situation. Contacting Apple by both Email and phoning an Apple store.
At the online store it does not say anywhwere (that I can find) what firmware is on new Touches. The fact that the 2.0 upgrade is so heavily advertised along side the Touch might have been a clue.
Updating a Touch during shipping would be totally impractical, you require the update file on your own HD. Also, putting what is now appearing to be a not quite 100% solid software update on a brand new item may have been a good move for both parties.
As it appears the Touch is not yet shipped with 2.0 and no one out there is getting a better deal, I don't think you have been that hard done by.

  • Problem with clicking noise and using hdapm

I'm having a problem with my 2009 17" MacBook Pro, with Lion. I installed a new, larger hard drive, and ever since then a tinny clicking noise has been emanating from the laptop. I tried to install hdapm, and I am able to successfully download the .dmg file and mount the disk image. However, at this point, all I see is a .pkg file. I clicked to install the program, abd then added the command to Lingon to execute 'hdapm disk0 max' upon startup. However, Console said that it failed to execute this command. I tried entering it directly on Terminal, and still no luck. It should be compatible with my hard drive, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. From what I've gathered, there should be another file in the original disk image that I can move into my Applications folder; however, I could not find it anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to resolve this issue? Thanks!

This is not a disk failure problem, regardless of how there are disk failure modes that act like this. It is a hard disk firmware situation that conflicts with OS hd controllers. It is a problem that comes and goes, or gets less of a problem or more of a problem depending on OS upgrades. Although I have it happening with a Seagate drive, it is reported on Western Digital drives.
It is also not only exclusively a Mac hardware problem or software problem. There are comments on Dell's forums, and even a Seagate firmware upgrade (which I fear to do.) There are also solutions where people boot to Unix, do the fix there, then reboot to Mac and it disappears and stays disappeared.
==>> N.B. – In Lion and the last couple versions of SL, you need to place a 'sudo' in front of the 'hdapm disk0 max'. Then it will work...for a while...maybe.
I have modified versions of the airport plist in the past from 'always on' to 'when needed' and that helps until the OS changes something. Then the same 'fix' won't make the constant head parking stop.
Different combinations of programs will start it up. Sometimes just getting the head busy for a while, like playing songs on iTunes, will stop it and upon closing iTunes will continue to keep it off. (Playing songs with a lot of percussion will not disguise the problem since by the time you try that you will be sensitized to hear the sound even when it is -96dB from ambient.)
A new variation with Lion has been to get the click going a couple minutes !!!after!!! putting the system to sleep! In fact, this problem has never been so uncontrollable as with Lion.
...and that is why I am back searching the forums to see if anyone has an up-to-date solution.

  • Upside down video

    Hello,
i generate a DVD with Adobe Encore. everything was ok until watching the video. In fact, the video were upsidedown ?!?
I think i forget to do something or the automatic encoding is not the right choice ... my origin video is .avi.
Thank you to help me on this strange turnaround situation.
    Melanie

    Melanie,
As Jeff suggests, DivX (and Xvid) can cause this sort of problem. The file extension "AVI" is just a wrapper. All sorts of CODECs might be used in its creation. A freeware program, G-Spot, can tell you all about the file and also what CODECs are used, plus whether you have them properly installed on your system: www.headbands.com/gspot.
Let us know what it tells you about your AVI file, please.
