Strange flags in Mail

When I checked Mail this morning, I saw "!!" marks on the left side of some messages.  When I clicked the flag at the top of the column, the !! marks increased to most of the messages, with the orange spam flag on the rest.
What is going on?
I have 10.9.3

Doesn't seem right.  That is the column (with flag at the top) with the spam icon in it and no one would tag their own stuff with spam.  Also, as I clicked the column header, the number of rows with the "!!" and spam markings increased by 2x.
To test again, I just went to my email.  There were no markings on the visible page under the flag column.  When I clicked the Flag at the top, the !! marks appeared in 15 or so of the rows.  I think it is a bug.

  • Strange behaviour in Mail

    I have ongoing strange behaviour with Mail in Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro.
    As well as randomly and intermitttently dropping connections to my various mail servers, I also, randomly and intermittently, fail to get to Print, or to create a new Mailbox, or to Quit. I just get a beep.
    Have to quit Mail - sometimes forcibly, and restart it.
    Mail will not automatically reconnect to servers after a Sleep , or moving to a differnt location.
    None of this was happenning on an older MacBook, but I was running 10.7 on that machine.
    Had to upgrade machine to allow upgrade to Mountain Lion.  Not sure which is responsible - new MB PRo , or 10.8?!
    Do I really have to re-install OSX  just to reinstall Mail?
    Any other pointers/hints very welcome.
    Thanks

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Is it possible to flag e-mails and/or right click an e-mail to mark as read/unread, etc. when using Microsoft Outlook Web Access in Firefox on a Mac?

    Is it possible to flag e-mails and/or right click an e-mail to mark as read/unread, etc. when using Microsoft Outlook Web Access in Firefox on a Mac?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I've never been able to figure out how to do those things in Firefox.

    When you use OWA in something other than IE, you're using OWA lite and no--it is not possible to do either in OWA lite (well, new Exchange stuff makes my answer a little less emphatic but still: pretty much no). Thanks Microsoft. But this guy made it possible to mark unread/read and select all/none:

  • Flags in Mail vs Outlook Flags

    With the new Mail in Lion, I can flag my mail to be followed up, however there is no tick like in outlook to tick off a mail once it has been delt with. You can highlight mail that has been read or not, but i would still like to see a tick that i dont go back to the same old mail and read it again. Is there a solution for this?

    n the support document at the link below, overstuffing is discussed, and you can assume the 2 GB limit applies equally to Leopard and Mail 3.x.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25812
    The limit of 2 GB applies only to each mailbox, and not overall. In Mail, a mailbox is the basic level of folder, whether a standard mailbox such as Inbox, or one you create for archival purposes. My Mail folder and all mailboxes exceed 8 GB on both a Mac running Leopard and another Mac running Tiger - no issues on either.

  • Strange things happen: mail disappears/appears/is shown wrong

    Strange things happen: mail appears in "drafts"/mail disappears after "send"/title-content doesn't match
    I'm having some Problems with mails that get worse and worse
    First thing I remember is, that I found mails in "Drafts" that weren't drafts, but just mails I received or mails I sent.
    They were kind of aliasses of the original. Deleting them in "Drafts" deleted the original in its Mailbox too.
    Re-indexing Mail (removing the envelope.index files etc.) fixes it, but it reappears very soon
    Next thing:
    When I send an email, it happens sometimes, that it is not send (no sending sound, no copy in the "Sent"-Folder). It just "disappears"
    Re-indexing Mail fixes this: When Mail is ready with reindexing, it sends those messages (kind of funny, when I do this reindexing after some weeks... kind of...) - but it will reappear
    The third thing happens more seldom:
    When I klick on the emails name in the list, I get another Mail shown in the Previewbox. Doubleklicking the mail shows the wrong mail too.
    Re-indexing fixes this, - but it will reappear
    Well after having re-indexd my Mail library 10 times this week, I want another solution for this...
    Mail Version etc:
    Mail: Version 3.5 (930.3)
    1 Pop account,
    1 .mac account (i don't use)
    Mail, after being sent, is moved to "Sent"mail never to be deleted
    Mails Spam Filter is active (and working fine, by the way)
    about 80 Mailboxes for old Mails I got, partially nested
    More than 4000 Mails in the whole Database
    Things I've already done:
    Reindexing mail, as I already wrote (Quit mail, removing the files "Envelope Index" and "Envelope Index-1", and the folder starting with "Mac-", then start Mail again, that tells me to klick "ok" for reimporting the mail)
    I deleted a bunch of emails with attachements, so there are just a few with attachment now.
    I emptied the "Sent" folder and put those old emails in 3 Folders (each of them is containing about 500 mails now)
    Thanks for your help in advance
    PS: Yes, I want to keep all these old mails...

    This is not a security risk - a setting change you should make.
    1.     Take a look in settings - i message and see what the 'recieve at' addresses are declared.  If you do not want to see phone messages on the pad, clear that number out of there - and just use your e mail address.
    2.     Since you used to have an i phone, that device is likely still registered   go to your i tunes account and de register the device.

  • How do I label flags in mail

    How do I label and change the labels on Flags in mail and elsewhere

    Howdy Tchumbley,
    It sounds like you have some flags you would like to rename. Take a look at this info from the article named:
    Mail (Mountain Lion): Flag messages for action
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11748
    To change the name of a flag, double-click it and then type a new name. For example, double-click Red, and then type Urgent.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Strange Problem with Mail & Address Book

    Hi,
    I'm having a strange problem with Mail & Address Book.
    When I go to compose a new message from Mail and hit the Address button (to show my email addresses), it won't launch the contacts window!
    I get this log from console;

    If I try to launch the Address Book from my Applications folder, it won't open, and it gives me this log from console;

    If I quit Address Book, i'll get this from console;
    2007-10-15 22:58:37.892 Address Book[417] -[ABAddressBook setDefaultCountryCode:] called with a unknown country code 'us'
    I tried deleting the preferences, re-installing Address Book, also tried creating a new user, again no luck!
    Can somebody help!!!
    Please?!

    Hi dp13.
    Do you have any Address Book plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Address Book? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
    ~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
    To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins ~/Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins
    Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.
    <hr>
    Did you also reinstall the appropriate Combo Update after reinstalling Address Book?
    Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
    The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
    After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
    About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
    Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
    Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
    After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
    Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
    Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • How to get rid of flag in mail

    I downloaded the new Lion, and mail has this new fonction of flag.  But it put a flag on all messages and it take 4 step to delete a message now.  How do I get rid of this fonction.  Basicaly I don't want any flag ever!!!!!

    Use PreparedSatement class,
    e.g.
    // Where the name field is defined as char, i.e. needs quotes in SQL.
    String sql = "select * from person where name = ? ";
    PreparedStatement statement = connection.prepareSatement(sql);
    statement.setString(1, "Bob");
    statement.executeQuery();
    This will get rid of hardcoding db vendor dependant quotes in your sql,
    Hope this helped.

  • Unable to clear flags in Mail using Exchange 2010

    I am able to flag messages without a problem, but when I try to turn those flags off within a few moments it will sync them back to "flagged."  I basically cannot unflag a flagged message.  Connected to an Exchange 2010 server.  Not having any problems getting or syncing mail.  Activity window is clear and nothing is queued up.
    I see "changing flags" pop up really quick in the Activity window but as soon as it sync's back up with Exchange those flags come right back.
    Help!

    I've found a solution that works for me, although it's a little technical.
    I found that the Envelope Index file in Home/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/ is actually a sqlite3 database.
    the steps I followed were:
    Quit Mail (don't know if this is necessary)
    Open Terminal, and cd to ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/
    open the sqlite db using the sqlite3 command line client:
    $> sqlite3 Envelope\ Index
    Now, in the sqlite3 command shell I queried the messages table to see which messages were flagged:
    sqlite> select * from messages where flagged = '1';
    I verified that the one message I couldn't clear was in the result set and then I updated the database and cleared the flag:
    sqlite> update messages set flagged = '0' where flagged = '1';
    Re-start Mail, and voila - flagged messages gone.
    Note: to selectively clear the flags from only certain messages would probably require a more advanced update statement that included some join in the where clause.

  • Flags in mail

    I'm having trouble in Mail with the flagging feature.  I had a bunch of emails flagged.  I have since removed the flags, but they still show up in the "flagged" smart mailbox.  When I looked at them in there they are no longer flagged though.  In the past I had problems with messages that I had flagged not showing up in that smart mailbox.  Any ideas on how to fix this?  Is there a plist somehwere I should delete to get it to rebuild the list of flagged messages?

    Tonyrocker.
    I'm having the same problem.
    Did you find solution to solve the problem?
    Thank you.

  • Strange Characters in Mail and Safari

    Hello,
    Just got my mini home and have noticed strange characters appearing in both Mail and Safari.
    It seems to be a font problem, but changing the fonts in mail and safarui prefs doesn't seem to fix it.
    Specifically: The apple start page rss stories display a weird font, so do the mail headers in mac mail.
    Yes, I did a search of the forum and the only things I seem to be coming up with are font issues related to outlook receiving mail on a pc.
    Any suggestions?
    Stefan

    Without seeing what you mean by "strange characters" it is hard to tell, but the most common cause of gibberish text is the font Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic. Dump them if you have them. Also clean your font caches with FontFinagler (use google to find it).
    Send a screen shot if you like (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • TS3276 Setting Alarms/Flags in Mail

    How do you set an alarm or reminder (i.e. flag) an email in the Mail application.  You can do it in iCal but I can't see how to in Mail.

    Those features are coming in Mountain Lion.  Take a look at the Reminders app in Apple's preview:

  • Stop using flags in mail

    email from one of the groups I set up arrives with a flag on each mail. I don't need flags! How can I turn off flags!

    Select the message, then go to the Flag in the menu bar, and choose 'Clear Flag'.

  • Colored flags in mail

    Hello - does anyone know if I can use additional colors for flags in my mail? The only flag I see is the option to use the orange one. When I used to use Outlook I had 6 colors to flag with and liked using different color coded flags for different emails in my inbox.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks - Maureen

    Hi,
    Click on your message, go to the Format menu and select "Show Colors".

  • Flags in mails and clever smart folders...

    Hi all,
    This is one that has been niggling at me for a while now...
    My current workflow is... I get an email from a client, if I need to follow it up, but don't currently have the time (most emails...) I flag (thanks to lions new naming flags option) it as a 'to-do'.
    Next I move the email into a folder named for that particular client, which lives within a main folder called 'clients', save locally on my main machine.
    I can now review all the emails I need 'to-do' by clicking the 'to-do' flag, whist keeping my inbox clean.
    Here comes the niggle...
    If i'm out and about, and think about checking the list of 'to-do's' I can only see the ones I haven't moved from the inbox on my iPhone. I am using an IMAP account, (hence the flags working) but I don't want to pop all my 'clients' folder online as it is now rather large...
    Is there anyway to make a 'smart folder' on the sever, to find these flagged emails?
    Thakns in advance...

    A rule could work, but will also suffer from limitations.  You would have to leave Mail running on your Mac all the time, and the Mac on at all times, for it to file those messages properly.  And even if you set Mail to check mail every 5 minutes, you could still easily hit a 5 minute window where a message comes in and you see it on your phone first...  and then, being read, it won't get filed by the rule.  (Rules only work on new, unread messages.)
    So that may work, but will involve some inconveniences and won't work perfectly.
