Strange flashing cursor problem

Hi,
I've just finished installing Vista 32bit on my Macbook Air (1.6) and its working fine apart from one small problem - when starting up it freezes on a black screen with a flashing cursor for 2-4 mins and then will start loading Vista fine. Once in there is no problem and its stable and what not. I have had a look at some on the articles on here and other forums and the flashing cursor problem usually refers to when people try to first install a MS OS and not once one has been installed successfully.
I only have to boot into Vista every now and then and only for a few minutes at a time so I usually spend as much time in Vista as it does loading.
Any help appreciated.

  • Strange Cursor Problems

    Hi everyone,
I have been having a lot of strange cursor manifestations happening after I reformated my computer and reinstallled the Adobe Suite.  However, the only problems that pop up seem to be in Photoshop.  I'll try my best to explain...
Whenever I adjust the size of the of a brush or switch between tools (like the clone stamp, healing brush, eraser, brush) or sample an area, either the brush cursor manifests twice so that I have to circles side by side or it turns into two lines on a diagonal that cross over each other (not crosshairs though).
I never had these problems before, and have no cursor problems outside of Photoshop.  Anyone have an idea of what is going on, or even better, a solution?

Update your video driver from the web site of the maker of your video card.  That's been known to solve problems such as what you're describing.
What video card do you have, by the way?  nVidia?

  • Notebook flashing cursor issue

    Hi there
We have a notebook problem here. All has been working fine until two nights ago when a strange pop up appeared asking for permission for a process to be run on the P.C. Clicked 'No' but then all sorts of scripts started to be run (inferring that files were being installed) and then a pop up appeared suggesting that the P.C had been virus infected and to clear it needed to buy some American software for 1 year, 3 years etc.
Turned off PC at this point and now when I boot up after Toshiba splash screen I just get a flashing white cursor in the top left hand corner. F8 (safe mode boot up) doesn't work. Only F2 and F12 options available. Checked boot option on F12 and HDD is highlighted first.
The PC is a Toshiba NB200 notebook, running XP with no CD and no other peripherals connected and is only 18 months old.
Macafee virus checker is installed and up to date.
Have looked at various forums and other things I have tried are:
Uncoupling and decoupling hard drive - no affect.
Pressing zero on boot up just returns ******* HDD RECOVERY MODE******* in bottom right (as well as flashing cursor in top left) - this just stays there with nothing else happening (i.e. no hard drive flashing etc etc).  Also same when zero and P pressed together.
    Many, many thanks in advance
    Solved!

  • Satellite Pro L300 - Black screen flashing cursor

    Hi all,
I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 laptop running Vista.
The client brought it in because when it boots it goes to Toshiba splash screen then goes to black screen with flashing cursor in left top corner. I have connected external monitor with same result. Swapped out RAM as well.
Have run Memtest (passed), Seagate HDD long test (passed), Ultimate boot CD, and Winternals with no success.
*F8 does not work* and nor does Factory recovery.
Can get into BIOS F2 and F12 no problem and the HDD is listed there.
I reinstalled Vista from CD and when rebooted it goes back to flashing cursor. I have attempted Startup repair from Vista CD and System restore. FixBoot from Command Prompt and FixMbr as well with the same result.
I have a feeling it may be a corrupted CMOS? It is like the OS installs properly, but the computer loses it's memory on reboot of where the OS is located?
Is the CMOS battery easily accessible and removable on this model?
Has anyone encountered these symptoms? Is it fixable cheaply?

    Hello
If you have clients I presume you are some technician and hope you have some hardware parts in your store.
Have you tried to set BIOS to default settings and check it again?
If possible try to exchange HDD and test the functionality again.
Can you use notebook with Linux live CD (HDD not needed)?
To be honest I dont think problem is BIOS and, in my opinion, CMOS battery exchange is not necessary.
Test it please with new HDD and post some feedback.

  • WORK AROUND: Black screen/flashing cursor trying to boot windows cd

This refers to the black screen with flashing underline cursor in the top left corner problem that happens after using bootcamp to setup your partition & then rebooting with the windows install CD in the driver. Install never starts, you just get this black screen with flashing cursor. seems to affect many different types of macs attempting to boot both XP & Vista.
I tried rebooting about 10 times. No luck. Same problem. Tried running disk verify/repair after removing partition, no luck. Remade boot camp partition, no luck.
Finally I pointed Parallels (free trial available) to my blank bootcamp partition and set parallels to boot from CD before HD. Parallels booted the Vista install CD just fine, and put Vista on my HD. Crashed at the end though and said it couldn't make the boot camp partition bootable so all changes were removed. Rebooted under boot camp and the installer came up fine off the CD. I'm now running vista (SP1 even) under bootcamp just fine. Parallels just lets you get past that boot-up bug.
So if you have this problem, and nobody else can help, and if you can find it, maybe you can download..... Parallels.
Feel free to post this on the other threads. Unlike other workarounds I'm guessing this will work for everyone and it only takes a free trial download of parallels to give it a try. Just remember to setup the virtual machine to use the bootcamp partition as the target drive, and then go under the edit virtual machine, then OPTIONS, then BOOT tab and set it to boot from cd before HD. Switch it back when you are done.
Then run boot camp assistant again and select the install OS option. Should run the installer correctly (thus overwriting anything parallels put on the partition).
I think VMWare Fusion also supports vitualization with the bootcamp partition as the target so that may help you get around this problem.

I have resolved this issue for four of our iMac computers with either of the following solutions. I realize that these solutions might seem awkward, but these solutions have been the only solutions that have successfully resolved this same issue for four different machines.
    Solution 1
On the Mac OS partition, leave the Boot Camp partition that has yet to be configured.
Leave the Windows install disk in the optical drive.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug all cables.
Hold the power button for a minimum of 5 seconds.
    Plug in all cables.
    Turn the power on.
The computer will proceed to install Windows.
Solution 2 (If Solution 1 fails)
On the Mac OS partition, leave the Boot Camp partition that has yet to be configured.
Remove the Windows install disk from the optical drive.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug all cables.
Hold the power button for a minimum of 5 seconds.
    Plug in all cables.
    Turn the power on.
A black screen will appear prompting for a bootable disk.
    Load the Windows install disk.
Shut down the computer by holding the power button.
    Turn on the computer.
The computer will proceed to install Windows.

  • Notebook NB200 cannot boot from USB CD/DVD drive / flashing cursor

I have a toshiba nb200-11L just under 2 years old (no warranty!). Recently it developed a problem which prevents it from booting up and all that happens is that I get a flashing cursor in the top left corner of a black screen. The only options availavle are F2 and F12 but these will not allow me to enter either safemode or to use the toshiba recovery option.
I have purchased the toshiba recovery disk on cd rom in order to complete a re-install but the bios only shows HDD and FDD as options, and there does not appear to be any way of adding further options.
I have checked the hard drive which appears to be ok. I am concerned that the problem may be the motherboard which I suspect will make any repair uneconomical.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
    Thanks. Keith

I do not know what BIOS version it is, but I have set the BIOS to default. I suspect that there may be a problem with the external dvd drive, as I have plugged it in to another laptop and it is not being recognised. I am going to try another one tomorrow - fingers crossed!

  • Pavilion m8400f boots to flashing cursor

My Pavilion m8400f boots to a flashing cursor. It will not boot from a CD. I tried disconnecting the CD-ROM and re-booting - same problem.
I'm trying to boot with my Windows 8, Windows 7, and Kaspersky Recovery Disk. On occasion it would boot from these disks, but now not at all.
Maybe a dirty CD-ROM, but it still wouldn't boot when I disconnected it.

  • Flashing Cursor when running autocad 12 in bootcamp Parallel

Has anyone one else experienced the flashing cursor when running Autocad 12 on Parallel on Windows7 Professional on bootcamp. When running Autocad on Bootcamp alone it's fine, but in Parrallel it flashes quite badly.
    Any ideas as to why.
    Cheers,
    Ross.

    I'm having the same problem.
I bought a macbook pro 13inch 2.3 ghz core i5 base model yesterday. I gave it the normal windows partition as i normally do with all my macs and tried to install Win7.
The installation was ok except that it took the macbook pro like 40 seconds to finish showing the Black screen with the blinking cursor .
I then Installed Bootcamp 3.2 and restarted, it took its normal 40 secs to show the black screen and blinking cursor after i had selected windows to boot and then it restarted!
I tried 4-6 times but it keeps giving me the same result.
I then reformatted 4 times both the Windows and Mac partitions and tried to repeat the windows installation but it kept giving me the same result.
A friend of mine bought his macbook pro 13 base model today and when i tried installing, it gives the same result! What is wrong?
I then installed Parallels 6 on both laptops and immediately it booted the already installed windows partition.(*but i don't want to use parallels )
But when i restart and hold down the option key and choose windows, it keeps giving me the black screen with the blinking cursor and the restarts itself.
I have used 10 or more macbook pros and airs in the past and they've never given me this sort of problem.
    What is wrong???

  • Z77A-GD55: Boot stuck with flashing cursor (need help!)

When I start my computer, it says A2 in the lower left of the screen, and then B2 for quite a long time. Afterwards, it's just a white cursor flashing on a black background, and nothing else happens.
I have recently installed a third hard disk and changed my graphics card (from 2x Sapphire HD 7970 to 1x EVGA GTX 760).
What can I do to fix this problem?

    Quote from: badboy2k on 20-August-13, 05:16:16
A2 = IDE Detect (looking for a hard drive as you do not have a OS that could just be the issue there)
B2 = Legacy Option ROM Initialization <---- that is a problem and may indicate you have a problem with your EVGA GeForce GTX 760 as that is usually a Graphics Card issue code (check its seated and connected properly)
was the 3rd HDD clean (new with no OS on it) and what SATA port you got it attached to?
I removed the graphics card and connected the screen cables to the motherboard instead, and then started the computer. I worked fine, but of course, I can't use it how I want to without a graphics card.
I then tried to insert it again, and made sure everything was connected properly. When I then started the computer, nothing had changed, and it was still stuck at the flashing cursor.
The new hard disk was clean, yes. I previously had my three drives connected like this:
    - SSD (240GB) and HDD (2000GB) connected to the two SATA 1&2 (6.0 Gb/s)
    - Optical drive (Bru-Ray read/write) connected to SATA 3 (3.0 Gb/s)
When I installed the new hard disk, I connected the old 2TB to SATA 4 (3.0 Gb/s), and the new 3TB to SATA 2 (6.0 Gb/s).
The 240GB SSD is the disk with the operating system (Win7 64), and this is still, and has always been, connected to SATA 1.
Does anyone have any possible solutions for my problem from the information currently given?
I haven't been able to use my dear gaming computer for four weeks now, and it's driving me crazy...

PC is tidning on with the blue HP logo. After that windows 7 does not respond. It is just a black screen with a flashing cursor. In the start you can't ser any BIOS option or comand. What should i do?

Get to a Command Prompt in Safe Mode if you can and type: Bootrec.exe/fixmbr
You may also try a repair disk that you can create on another computer running Windows 7.
If nothing works you will have to perform a Factory Restore either through the recovery partition or recovery disks.

  • Elements 8, Flashing cursor with waiting circle

I recently had to reinstall my OS (Win 7 64 bit) and after doing the same to my photoshop program, I now get a flashing cursor that changes to a waiting circle. Other post talked about DPI and Java, which I have checked and still have the same problem. I've had the program installed on the same computer without this problem, and the setup is the same with the usual update in drivers. Any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I tried the online chat but guess the program is no longe supported, because it refered me to the forum section.

    Hi Pete,
I have good news and bad news. The good is the problem seems to be gone. The bad is I don't know exactly which program was causing it. For anyone else following this thread I'll explain. Turning off the antivirus did nothing, same problem. When I went to the msconfig, I choose the shorter route and checked "Load basic devices and services only". After the reboot I could open the organizer but not the editor. I got an error code saying the license for the product has stopped working. I changed the startup back to normal and rebooted. This time the problem took longer to begin but only lasted 30 sec or so, then stopped. I could have stopped there but I wanted to see if I could figure out which program was causing the problem. My rig is custom with limited startup items. I had only 10, ....printer, steam, audio, adobe etc. I disabled 6 (keeping the microsoft programs at startup) and rebooted. When I opened PS8 there was NO flashing cursor. I enabled all the startup programs again, hoping to have the problem so I could systematically choose each one, to try to ID the program causing the problem. No luck. With all the same initial startup programs starting, the problem did not recure.
The bottom line is one of the six, and I don't know which one unless it happens again. If it does, I know where to start looking. I would have never have guessed it was one of the programs at startup so THANKS for hanging in there and giving me advice. What must have happen is by turning off and then on whatever program was causing the flashing, the culprit must have fixed itself.
I really appreciate the help, and thanks again.
    Al
