Strange folder "tmp" in "private" folder.   virus?

an alias folder just recently showed up on my harddrive in the main window/directory (the one that has "applications, library, system and users" It's called "tmp" and is an alias folder. inside there's a folder called 501 and some files like cscache_lock501, objcsharing_ppc4294967294, se.pid. I delete the ailas but a new alias appear immediately. the original folder is in another folder called "private" that I don't have access too and is grayed out. Is this a virus?

Hi domihode!
I'm curious as to how the alias tmp folder became visible, and also if there may be other normally invisible files/folders, in other areas, that are now visible.
Do you remember what you were doing or did, before the tmp file appeared?
You may find some useful info in this Topic private/tmp alias folder keeps appearing - help please.

  • Strange folder appears out of no where under Macintosh HD

Today I noticed a strange folder with a strange name "㉠ㆨ䞦າ" under root folder appeared in one of the macs in my computer lab, initially i thought it could be someone messing with the computer, but It's zero k in size and the date says it was created this afternoon when no one was in the lab. Is it possible if this folder could be created by a "virus" or some random program?

No. Not a virus. Most likely something created by some Adobe app, which is notorious for that kind of thing. Delete it and forget it.

  • Private folder Virus?

I found a folder entitled "private" hidden in my hd today using the program "WhatSize?". When I tried to find it manually through the hd, it remained hidden. I'm wondering if this is a trojan planted on my hd, or has it always been there and I'm just freaking out? I included some screen shots.

Private is a normal hidden folder that's part of OS X and should be left alone. It's not a virus. There are hundreds of hidden folders that make up the underpinnings of the OS X operating system. They are hidden for a reason - to keep prying eyes out and prevent users from altering or deleting important components of the OS.
As for viruses see the following:
Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

  • Strange folder associations to dvd player

    Hello!
I have very strange problem, some folders are associated within DVD Player. For instance when I click in dock on folder download, it shows me the fun and then when I press the arrow to see more items in folder it opens a DVD Player?
Same problem I have in spot search, when I search for folder name, it shows it correcly, but when I click on it, it opens a DVD player.
Please is there a way how can I reset this strange associations?
    Thanks a lot!

On any one of the folders that exhibits this behaviour, click on it ONCE in Finder, then press 'command-i' to open the 'get info' window.
Scroll down the dialogue till you see the 'name and extension' field.
    What does it say exactly?
Underneath that field, is there a field that says 'Open with' ?

  • Strange Folder Icon Quirk

The past few days I have been having problems with some of my folder icons. When I am in icon mode, sometimes my Generic Apple folders are Tiny. I Command-J to get the adjustment window and scroll through different sizes. It seems mostly at standard 48 x 48 the folders shrink to 16 x16 size although other icons remain normal. At 44 x 44 and 52 x 52 everything seems normal.
This happens with folders in windows AND on my desktop. Additionally there is one single Icon I have assigned to a hard drive that shrinks at 44 x 44.
I have also noticed that occassionaly the back and forward arrows on a window change to little dots.
I have run permissions repairs and checked for viruses.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks
    TAK

    GTAK,
Your Finder preferences file may have become corrupted....
Go to your Home/Library/Preferences/ folder and locate the com.apple.finder.plist file. Trash it, and then see if the Finder isn't working correctly (you will have to re-setup your Finder as you liked it before your problem).

  • Strange folder names

my wife just started using a new Panasonic camera and all of a sudden her uploaded photos in iPhoto '09 are arranged in folders in the "Originals" folder that have very strange alpha-numeric names rather than the date the photos were taken. Does anyone have an explanation and is there any way to get back to "dates"?

They're the date and time of import, and no there is no way to change them without corrupting your Library.
Nor is there any need to, as you never, ever access your files via the Finder and these folders.

  • TM - strange folder-structure behavior

    Hello,
I just started again using Time Machine. Therefore I formatted a HDD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set it as the Backup-Volume. I already used this HDD for TM on this Mac, but deactivated it again for some reasons. So to start from scratch I completely wiped my HDD (I even formatted it with the setting: Overwrite with Zeros). After finishing the first Backup I wanted to check if everything is alright. So I went in the Time machine Application and browsed through some folders on the HDD.
But then I noticed something strange:
    When opening folders some files and folders in them suddenly appear also in the previous folder;
    clicking with trackpad on folders/files does not work anymore;
    folders lead to wrong files from other folders or are just empty and next time full again;
sometimes folders called "name" appear, next time not anymore…
So I thought there would be something wrong with my backup; deactivated TM and formatted my HDD again. But after doing a new backup I had the same problem again.
Then I noticed something even stranger:
When I start the Time Machine-app, the problem occurs everywhere -> when browsing through the backup on the HDD (purple in the Timeline) AND when browsing through my current files ("NOW", white in the timeline -> not my HDD but my Mac). Additionally, when I choose another backup after seeing this, the problem is gone in ALL sources until close and reopen the Time Machine-app. (When browsing through my backup on the HDD via the Finder this problem does not occur - everything seems fine there (I have not activated: Show hidden Objects)
Q1: Is my Backup ok? Or is it somehow messed up? I'm really concerned that it could be somehow damaged / incomplete / not working when restoring.
Q2: Is it possible that formatting my HDD and enabling and disabling TM again and again could have caused some problems?
    I'd really appreciate your help!
    Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Trash & Strange folder

    Hi All,
I have an iMac 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Leopard 10.5.8.
The last 2 days I have had a folder in my trash called "Database" inside that folder is a TextEdit Document of 88MB - when I go to empty it I get the message that it could not be emptied because the item "Database.sqlite3" is in use.
Any ideas on what it is and how I get rid of it?
    All help appreciated
    Thanks
    Morris

Restart and then empty the trash.

  • Strange folder

A folder from my desktop is showing up at the top of my finder windows and I have no idea why it is there or how to get rid of it. When I throw the folder from my desktop into the trash, the folder image in the finder window turns into a question mark. Anyone know why it is there and more importantly, how to get rid of it?

    That worked, Barry! Thank you!!
And, WZZZ, I was able to do both of those things, but it didn't help me get rid of it. It just showed me the information of the folder it was linked to. Thank you, though!

  • Strange folder in App. Support

Trying to free up space on my hd I found this folder: "WB 2004 download" in my "application support" folder. It contains 333 items that are basically of two types: mb199701.001 through mb200706.004 and a bunch of .gif's that appear to be old news items (photo w. a caption).
What is this and can I get rid of it?

This appears to be the files that are used to update World Book (hence WB). They date from 2004 (hence the 2004, but you guessed that ). Do you have World Book installed? Or have you migrated from a machine that did?

  • Question on strange folder in /home

I noticed today that I had a folder in /home named pdf-document and have never seen that before. Interesting part is ownership was root:nobody and perms was 777 so anyone has r,w,x access to that folder. Anyways curious if anyone knows what package would have created this folder?

    skymt wrote:
shen wrote:well pacman seems to think it can't determine ownership of a directory...
The workaround I've seen suggested is to list all files and directories managed by pacman, then grep for the one you want:
    pacman -Ql | grep ' /home/pdf-document'
I don't think that lists directories either.
    What about :
find /var/lib/pacman/local/ -name files | xargs grep home/pdf-document/$

  • Strange folder appeared

I downloaded GIMP today to see how well it ran on my imac. I had the gimp icon on the dock plus one next to it with a large X on it. Just a white box/icon with the letter X.
I decided to uninstall GIMP as it offered no more than PSE9. When I checked around to make certain it had gone I was still left with this folder. It is currently in applications/utilities. I just wondered if it was connected to GIMP or part of the OS-X.
Thought it best to check with my peers before loosing it.
    Thanks
    Doc

Most apps are like that, whether it makes sense to you or not. Leave it be and go worry about something else, or just stop worrying.

  • Strange Folder appears after restoring Backup

After suffering a disaster and cloning my backup back to my PowerBook, I noticed a folder at the root level named "bin" which contained a bunch of generic docs all of whose names begin with mw. It also contains a folder named Desktop but is not really the Desktop folder for my home folder.
I believe that bin is the name of one or more invisible folders in the System folder. Can anyone explain how it appeared at the root level of my hard drive?

Yes, I know. And the OP stated that he was confused by this because "I believe that bin is the name of one or more invisible folders in the System folder", so I've clarified that there is nothing wrong about bin being at the root level, that that's where it should be. What did I misread?
