Strange Folders Appear in Root Directory

After a clean install of 10.5 on a MacBook and MacBook Pro, and then applying all of the Software Update recommended updates, I'm noticing some strange folders appear in my root directory.
On the MacBook Pro, I now have a Developer folder with Applet Launcher and Jar Bundler inside. Obviously, these are Java tools, but I'm not sure what installed them. I do not have any developer tools installed on this machine.
On the MacBook, I'm seeing links to the Unix directories bin, sbin, etc, and so forth in the root folder. Again, not sure how they got there, or what app may have created them.
Both the MacBook Pro and MacBook have essentially the same applications and updates applied, so I'm at a loss as to why there's the inconsistency.
Thanks,
JKG

Something went awry during the installation that has made some invisible items visible. The following outlines how to fix the problem. It's a bit complicated:
It's a bit of a confusion in Leopard. Start by downloading Pacifist at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Open Pacifist.
Insert your Leopard DVD into the optical drive. Select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter:
/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/
Click on the Go button. Locate the OSInstall.pkg file and drag it to the Pacifist window. Click on the Resources tab in the Pacifist list window. Open the Scripts folder and locate the hidden_MacOS9 file and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. I would extract it the the /usr/sbin/ directory. Now Open the Tools folder and locate the SetHidden command. Select it and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. Extract it also to the /usr/sbin/ directory.
Now you can quit Pacifist. Open the Terminal app in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following commands pressing RETURN after each:
cd /usr/sbin
sudo ./SetHidden / hidden_MacOS9
Enter your password which will not be echoed.

  • Strange folders appearing in "Save As" dialog box

    Hello
    *Description of Problem or Question:
If you open a Web Intelligence report that has been sent to you from your Inbox I have noticed there are "extra" folders I wouldn't expect to see. As an administrator and can see the following extra "strange" folders:
    Categories
    Inboxes
    Internal Storage Folder
    Personal Categories
    Root Folder
    Temporary Storage
    User Folders
    (Please see attached screenshot)
As a non-admin user I can only see the extra folder "Root Folder".
This does look odd for a non-admin user as they see the same folder structure twice. E.g:
    Public Folders
    >>Finance Reports
    >>Operations Reports
    >>Root Folder
    >>>>>Finance Reports
    >>>>>Operations Reports
Any ideas on how to hide these folders from the "save as" dialog box?
It does only seems to happen if a report is opened from a users Inbox.

Sorry I wasn't clear! When I try to save a 'PDF' file the "save as" dialog box opens. At the bottom the 'file name'is listed and below that it says, "save as type". You then pick what file type you want, like Adobe Reader for PDF. It used to say Adobe Reader as one of the choices but when I downloaded "Rocket PDF" it only says "Rocket PDF or "all files" as the only choices to save the document, no more Adobe Reader as a choice. I have deleted Rocket PDF and under 'default programs (Start button) I have set the "Pdf. files to open with Adobe Reader. Rocket PDF is still listed or' all files', nothing else! How can I get Adobe Reader as a choice back in the 'save as type' box?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Hiding of folders in the root directory in KM

    Hi, comrads!
I had had problem a few days ago.
I want to hide all folders in root directory.
I have set 'hide in root directory" flag in all repository managers properties in Content Management Configuration.
Practically all repositories became Hidden, but I still can`t find Repository managers for "Calendar" and "Runtime" folders.
I`ll be very glad if somebody will help me to solve this problem, and hide "Calendar" and "Runtime" folders in root directory.

  • Strange folders appearing in LiveType Project directory

Running FCP 5.04 under 10.4.7. LiveType 2.0.2 Just upgraded from OS X 10.3.9, FCP 4.5 and LiveType 1.2. We did not see this issue prior to the update.
LiveType is placing 0 Kb folders in my LiveType project directory every time I save (as) a LiveType project. The directory is on a SAN volume. The system creates the folder name "com.apple.LiveType_hughnumberstring-n". The "hugenumberstring" appears to change after logging in for the first time each day. "Hugenumberstring" remains the same for each day, while "n" increments everytime I save the project.
The sturcture of the filename suggest somthing to do with preferences, but, being a folder, it has no pref file extension.
Any ideas where this is being generated, and what to do about it?

Try saving to an internal drive and then tell us what happens.

  • Strange folders appearing on IMAP server

    Hi
Over the past couple of months I have had folders with names like 'nfs000000000c8133a7000000b5' appearing on the top level of my IMAP server. They have appeared once or so per week and I now have 15 - all with names starting 'nfs000000000.....'
They cannot be deleted - i get the error message "This mailbox "nfs000000000c8133a7000000b5" could not be deleted. The IMAP command "DELETE" failed with server error: Mailbox does not exist, or must be subscribed to ..."
    - which I am guessing suggests the problem is on the Mail application side rather than server side.
any ideas how to solve this??
    thanks

  • Three Database Files Appear & Root Directory Icons Rearranged

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8.5) from Lion on two of my Macs (15" MBP, Late 2011 & iMac 20" Early 2008). On both machines, seemingly at random, three database files appear on the root directory (sorry I can remember the names now) and all of the files/folders on the root directory are rearranged in alphabetical order. I have not been able to determine what triggers this action, but it is really annoying having to rearrange all of the file icons.
Anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how it can be "fixed"?
    Thanks!
    Gordon

Have you found an answer to this problem? I have found it happens in Safari > Preferences > Privacy. When you click on the Privacy icon header, instantly the 3 .db files appear and re-arrange all my files into alphabetical arrangement on my root directory (Mac Pro SSD). It will also behave this way when you choose "Reset Safari" from the drop down Safari menu.

  • My iPod Touch says it saved to root directory

hi everyone i am a perfectionist and i like to keep my devices clean so i dont know how to delete a file in the root directory.  i was playing with netportal lite and did a quick save on a pdf.  it says that it saved to my root directory.  what is it and how do i find it?
    thanks

Did you go to Finder and click on  on your hard disk under Devices.  The file should be in the left-hand part, the same place as the Application and other folders in the Root directory.

  • Strange files in root directory

Yesterday I noticed that some strange files (directories, actually) had appeared in the root directory on my MacBook Pro, that is, the directory that contains the standard Finder-viewable Applications and System directories and the Unix bin and usr directories.
The new directory was named 5ffffffcb00, and it contained two other hex-named directories, which were empty. Perhaps foolishly, I trashed them yesterday. Nothing bad seems to have happened, but this morning they have all reappeared. Here's the output of "ls -alR /5ffffffcb00/":

Does anyone have any idea about these? They're visible in the Finder.

If your child pages are open when you update the Template, you need to save them again (after you have saved the Template).
You can update "all pages based on your template" at Modify > Templates > Update pages: Files that use... [choose the name of your template]
I'm also assuming that the changes that you are making are within the Ineditable Regions of your Template. Changes made in the Editable Regions will not, by design, change when you change that part of the Template.

  • What are these hidden drives in my root directory? Why can I not access them?

Noticed two drives (?) in my root directory a week or so back that were never there before, one called net and one called home. Also have been getting anomalous folders appearing on the left of explorer as 'shared' folders/devices. Odd thing is I have no access to them (read only attribute, but even less than read only as I can't actually read any data on them) and they say they are zero bytes and created in 2001?! But the "date modified" date is always right up to date. So why can I not delete them? Anyone know what these are? Are they normal? See this picture http://oi62.tinypic.com/iyzyc1.jpg
Would there be a way to use terminal to gain access or to dig a little deeper into what they are?

Another odd thing is the network icon in my root directory (which is set to neighborhood) when I click 'get info' the lock button is greyed out, and the more info just hangs on the 'fetching' spinning wheel.
Secondly I have a 'shared' device/server/folder(?) called Bthub4 on the left in explorer, right clicking 'get info' for that gives similar results with no access, or info. See pic below.
    http://i60.tinypic.com/15n99cp.png
Trying to view the Bthub4 shared device/server/folder gives a prompt to enter a name and password "for the server 'bthub4'" No password (operating system, or wifi related) works, and the guest account fails to give me access to the server. Pic of prompt: http://i62.tinypic.com/ae5jjk.png
Why server? Why do I not have access to any of these areas?
Can anyone else verify if they have any of these things in their root directory?

  • Restored from TM now Unix folder show in root directory

I had to do a install from a complete time machine backup which had a few hiccups but that was mostly programs that are sandboxed that did not like to be installed from a time machine backup so I reinstalled them all is working fine.
I did however come to notice that in my root directory " /  " I have visible Unix folders such as:
    bin
    cores
    opt
    private
    sbin
    ( Alias ) User Information
    usr
    Volumes
    The file
    mach_Kernel
I would think these files would start with a period and hence would not show with the normal folders, Applications, Library, System, and Users and if I am correct how do I go about change them so they are recognized as files that should be there just not visible to me?
If there is something else I should know please let me know.
I would think the visibility attributes are not set correctly for the folders and the one file and one alias folder.
Looking into terminal commands I would think setfile command would be what I am looking for but I need help making sure the command I would like to issue on the folder, files and alias is correct.
I have basically come up with this command set after reading the man setfile
    SetFile -P -a -V (folder name)
I am just not sure it the -P is correct as in man it say that -P acts on a symlink file instead on the file the symlink resolves to.
The files do not appear to be symlinks with the exceptions of the User Information folder.
Any one help me with this?
    Thank you.
    Leon

To hide all fies that should be invisible you can use this command then press return.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles False; killall Finder
To Hide individual files or folders
    sudo chflags hidden
Then drag the file or folder you want hidden to your Terminal window.
It will now show the path to the item.
    Press Return.

  • FinRep 9.3.1: All users getting error opening reports from root directory

We are having an irritating, although not missiion critical error
When a user (any user) attempts to open a report from the explorer view in Financial Reporting 9.3.1, we receive an "_Error 1000165"._ No explanation is provided. No folders are openable within the explorer view except "Personal Page."
It is possible to open reports by opening a report that got accidentally stored in the root directory and then opening another report from the menu system in the usual way. So it is not a user permissions/provisioning issue.
Is there a fix to this? I am afraid someone will clean out the root directory and then we won't be able to access our reports.
Update: I can use the pattern "VariancePercent([B(A)],[A(A)])" to cut this to 27 Columns by varying the direct reference to the column. But is there an easier way to do this?

We have been able to complete the update of our users SSID's in our Planning SQL tables through the utility. We had to create the users in Essbase first though.
However, if I try to log into Planning (through Workspace) I still cannot see the Planning applicaitons I should have access too. In Shared Services if I pull up my network ID and View Report, I do not get any Planning groups to show up that I belong too. I can open the group in HSS and see my ID is in it but when I do the View Report on my ID nothing comes up.
Additionally, if I add a user from scratch to the existing Planning groups that we've migrated and do the View Report they will show up for that user and the security passes through to Planning/Essbase so that I could log on fine. So, the problem is not with adding new users but the existing one's that were migrated. HSS shows the users in the groups but if you view a Report for those users it doesn't look like you belong to any groups.
We are going to apply a patch to Shared Services to see if it helps. It's suppose to deal with Groups that have users from multple domains but one set of those users cannot log into the application they should have access too. We applied this in our stand-alone S9 Essbase environment a couple of months ago to deal with a break between our existing users and groups from HSS to Essbase. Maybe this will be the final piece.

  • How do I get iWeb to publish just the files to my root directory

Hey all, when I publish my site to my hosting server via iWeb it's just copying the entire folder into my root directory instead of copying the files to the root directory. This is causing my site url to look like this: www.mysite.com/myfolder/ how do I get iWeb to publich the files in the "myfolder" to my server instead of the entire folder?

I needed to do this while keeping ftp publishing inside iWeb, and so I developed a sneaky solution. I just figured this out, so there may be some extra steps in here. Here goes:
Find the iWeb application on the computer you are publishing from.
Control-Click on the application and choose "Show Package Contents".
In the window that appears, open the folder "Contents".
Control-Click on the folder "Resources" and choose "Get Info".
In the window that appears, open the "Sharing and Permissions" drop-down.
Click the lock in the lower-right corner and enter your password.
Where it says "Read Only" across from "Everyone", click the arrows and choose "Read and Write".
Close the "Info" window and open the "Resources" folder.
Find the "defaultPublishConfiguration.plist" file and change the permissions (repeat steps 4-7 but with "defaultPublishConfiguration.plist" instead of the "Resources" folder).
Open the "defaultPublishConfiguration.plist" file in TextEdit.
    Find the line "<string>/Web/Sites</string>".
    Change it to "<string>/Web</string>".
Save and close the text file.
    Restart iWeb.
Go to your publishing settings and enter the information for your server. Point the "Directory/Path" to the folder above your server's root web folder.
Set "Site Name" to the name of your server's web folder.
Make sure that none of the files in your server's web folder have the same name as those iWeb would upload.
    Select File>Publish Entire Site.
It should now publish your site to "http://www.yourdomain.org/Home.html".
    Hope it works!

  • Too many files in root directory. How to split them up?

    Hi,
I made my site http://isuckatgolf.net in Dreamwever cs3. Having no idea what I was doing when I started 5 years ago all images and pages have been uploaded directly to the root folder/directory. My host GoDaddy.com just sent me a notice that I'm only allowed 1024 folders/files in one directory. I have almost 7000 in the main site and 1500 in the database for the sub-domain/forum (SMF forum). According to Godaddy.com this is a rule of theirs, but it isn't posted anywhere that they could point me to. Only that I have a max. of 500,000 files total in my unlimited shared hosting account.
I'm looking for a new host that can handle the way it is set up today. My question is, IF I have to divide these files up into subfolders or directories (whatever they're technically called), is it possible and is there an "easy" way to do this in Dreamweaver. Obviously manually moving 7000 files will take some time. But can it be done, and do you think it will be necessary no matter who hosts the site?
Lastly, if I do find a host that is ok the way it is, going forward should I direct DW to put future images into an images folder of some kind. I never created one. Right now all the jpg, gif and html files are just listed. (I didn't know how to do it the right way when I started!)
    Any help would be apprecaited.
    Thanks!
    KEn

It does not make any difference where your files are stored as long as the path to the file is correct. Nancy's idea is correct, but you can have sub-folders to the sub-folders. For example, I will have an images folder and within the images folder I will have folders that refer to pages within my site. My images folder may look like
    +images
         +index
              +thumbs
              +slides
         +gallery
              +holidays2012
                   +thumbs
                   +images
              +holidays2013
                   +thumbs
                   +images
              +golf
                   +images
    etc, etc.
That way it is easy to discover if there are any redundant images.
The same goes for the pages. You may have a products page with a couple of sub-pages. The directory would the be
    index.html
    aboutus.html
    products.html
    contactus.html
    +products
         fencing_material.html
         sport_clothing.html
         solar_panels.html
    etc, etc
As said, it really does not matter where the files are, with the exception of the index page which must always be in the root directory.
    Good luck

  • How to: Create a folder directly under the KM content 'Root' directory

I need to create a new folder directly under the 'root' directory of the KM content...
If I go to the KM root directory and click on any of the folders in it, I can create new folders.
For example: clicking on the 'documents' folder. Opening it, I can create new folders by clicking on 'Folder' --> 'New' --> 'Folder'.
However, when I am in the root directory itself, the only option under 'Folder' is 'Clipboard'.
How can I create a new folder under the Root? Am I missing a role?
    Cheers,
    Edwin.

You cannot create a folder under root directory
all the folders that you are seeing under root are  KM Repositories.
You need to create a repository and then in that you can create a folder structure.
As an example Documetns is a standard SAP KM repository. You can also create your own repository under
system admin-> system configuraiton->KM->CM-> Repository Managers
There you can get options of creating the repositories
    Hope it is clear
