Strange Folders In Preferences

I have two users with strange folders inside ~Library/Preferences
In this location there are dozens of zero KB folders with random garbled names, such as these 4 examples contained in quotes:
"˙jt"
"˙ù†"
"˙ùÃ"

Note, there is a return in the last one.
Does anyone have any idea what these are?

That was a smokin' link Niel! Good find.
They are both Photoshop CS2 users. One user does likely have TWAIN drivers installed because he has at least a couple of scanners. The other user I don't think has a scanner. But I could be wrong about that.
Thanks!

  • Strange folders appearing in "Save As" dialog box

    Hello
    *Description of Problem or Question:
If you open a Web Intelligence report that has been sent to you from your Inbox I have noticed there are "extra" folders I wouldn't expect to see. As an administrator and can see the following extra "strange" folders:
    Categories
    Inboxes
    Internal Storage Folder
    Personal Categories
    Root Folder
    Temporary Storage
    User Folders
    (Please see attached screenshot)
As a non-admin user I can only see the extra folder "Root Folder".
This does look odd for a non-admin user as they see the same folder structure twice. E.g:
    Public Folders
    >>Finance Reports
    >>Operations Reports
    >>Root Folder
    >>>>>Finance Reports
    >>>>>Operations Reports
Any ideas on how to hide these folders from the "save as" dialog box?
It does only seems to happen if a report is opened from a users Inbox.

Sorry I wasn't clear! When I try to save a 'PDF' file the "save as" dialog box opens. At the bottom the 'file name'is listed and below that it says, "save as type". You then pick what file type you want, like Adobe Reader for PDF. It used to say Adobe Reader as one of the choices but when I downloaded "Rocket PDF" it only says "Rocket PDF or "all files" as the only choices to save the document, no more Adobe Reader as a choice. I have deleted Rocket PDF and under 'default programs (Start button) I have set the "Pdf. files to open with Adobe Reader. Rocket PDF is still listed or' all files', nothing else! How can I get Adobe Reader as a choice back in the 'save as type' box?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Strange Folders Appear in Root Directory

After a clean install of 10.5 on a MacBook and MacBook Pro, and then applying all of the Software Update recommended updates, I'm noticing some strange folders appear in my root directory.
On the MacBook Pro, I now have a Developer folder with Applet Launcher and Jar Bundler inside. Obviously, these are Java tools, but I'm not sure what installed them. I do not have any developer tools installed on this machine.
On the MacBook, I'm seeing links to the Unix directories bin, sbin, etc, and so forth in the root folder. Again, not sure how they got there, or what app may have created them.
Both the MacBook Pro and MacBook have essentially the same applications and updates applied, so I'm at a loss as to why there's the inconsistency.
    Thanks,
    JKG

Something went awry during the installation that has made some invisible items visible. The following outlines how to fix the problem. It's a bit complicated:
It's a bit of a confusion in Leopard. Start by downloading Pacifist at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Open Pacifist.
Insert your Leopard DVD into the optical drive. Select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter:
    /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/
Click on the Go button. Locate the OSInstall.pkg file and drag it to the Pacifist window. Click on the Resources tab in the Pacifist list window. Open the Scripts folder and locate the hidden_MacOS9 file and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. I would extract it the the /usr/sbin/ directory. Now Open the Tools folder and locate the SetHidden command. Select it and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. Extract it also to the /usr/sbin/ directory.
Now you can quit Pacifist. Open the Terminal app in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following commands pressing RETURN after each:
    cd /usr/sbin
    sudo ./SetHidden / hidden_MacOS9
Enter your password which will not be echoed.

  • Strange folders in my user/library/preferences directory

    Hey all.
I'm running a dual 2.0 GHz G4 at work. Every now and then I have to clean my preferences directory of these annoying empty folders. Their unusual feature is that they are all named with secondary characters such as πˆ˚ and the like.
Does anyone have any idea why they are being generated? I just trashed them all and restarted, and none has been generated yet.
    Thanks in advance

They are being created by Adobe Photoshop CS2. You might check on the Adobe Discussions forum to see if there is a fix. I give you the URL, but I can't get the Adobe Photoshop forum to load right now. Their servers are even less reliable than Apple's....

  • Strange folders in my Preferences

    Hi All,
Since I got this iMac a few weeks ago I've been seeing several wierdly named folders appearing in my Users/Library/Preferences folder. It seems like the number of them grows each time I use the Mac. When I click on them nothing happens, that is they either don't open or there is nothing in them. I've checked in the Library/Preferences and System/Library/Preferences folders and there are none of these in either of them. Here are a few examples of the names:
    {’ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
    {fi0ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
    |0ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
Does anyone know what these are?
    Thanks.

  • Weird folders in preferences

I had to uninstall a few preferences and noticed a 100s of very strangely labeled folders, all of which contained 0kb of information. What could be causing this? I had recently got a 27" iMac i5 that I installed all my data from a Time Machine back-up from my old computer, so I'm not sure how long theses could be there, or if they were on the old computer (since re-formatted).
    [user] > Library > Preferences >
    example folder names in Preferences:
    ≥pê)i®øˇ€††'Ò|ê)kÿè¿úL
    ˝r ê}i®øˇfiĆ{Ò|ê}kÿè¿ú,øˇfi‡ßÉ
    ˝¥‡ê÷òøˇ›‡†~a|êÿÃè¿ö(øˇfi@ß≠`§
    ›∂ê}]Løˇ€††{·|ê}_|è¿ú
There are literally hundreds of these and some start with a bunch of spaces so it looks like the folder has no name when auto condensed.
    Any info would be great.

  • Strange Folders

I was looking at my preferences and I found at least 20 folders named/titled similar to C†âÄxøˇœ‡è¿≈ or ˆhÒ†0xøˇœ‡è¿. Does anyone know what or why in the heck these are in my mac mini? They all are the same size of zero. Any help is appreciated.

  • Strange folders appearing in LiveType Project directory

Running FCP 5.04 under 10.4.7. LiveType 2.0.2 Just upgraded from OS X 10.3.9, FCP 4.5 and LiveType 1.2. We did not see this issue prior to the update.
LiveType is placing 0 Kb folders in my LiveType project directory every time I save (as) a LiveType project. The directory is on a SAN volume. The system creates the folder name "com.apple.LiveType_hughnumberstring-n". The "hugenumberstring" appears to change after logging in for the first time each day. "Hugenumberstring" remains the same for each day, while "n" increments everytime I save the project.
The sturcture of the filename suggest somthing to do with preferences, but, being a folder, it has no pref file extension.
Any ideas where this is being generated, and what to do about it?

Try saving to an internal drive and then tell us what happens.

It must be a function of your particular drive software. I've never seen it in all of my years of LT/FCP work.

  • Strange folders being created with 'chmod 740' in filename

My colleague has a Mac Mini Intel 1.6Ghz with 1Gb RAM. He has recently discovered that the top level of his hard drive has had 48 folders created, each with the phrase "chmod 740" at the end of the filename. The names all follow the same style: it starts with the name of a file (for example, "cover"), then it follows it with "; chmod 740".
Within each folder it then reconstructs the file structure of the path to the original file.
There doesn't seem to be any consistency behind any of these files; it seems that all sorts of files are created, from Quark XPress documents, PDFs, postscript files, text files; and not all the files in the folders have been duplicated - only a random selection.
Does anyone have any ideas what's causing this problem?
    All help gratefully received.

This is strange. chmod 740 is a unix command to change file ownership of a file/folder to make the owner of it be able to read/write to it and make it executable, and the group read only.
I don't know if this is some kind of attack or if it is just some application gone crazy, or if the owner of the computer has been doing some batch file renaming and changing of permissions.
Move those files to a folder and Run Repair Permissions using Disk Utility.
See if any file permissions repaired by Disk Utility correspond to any of those odd folders. If they do, then their file permissions were changed which would lead to the question what changed them and why.
    Afterwards you could delete them.

  • Strange folders in BoBj universe

    Good Day everyone!
I have deployed OLAP cube based on MsSQL 2008 Analysis Services. I have made a connection with IDT, identified all measures and dimensions. Here everything is fine.
When I am trying to run report in WebI using CUSTOMER dimension, it displays me only limited number of raws. I have checked several time in settings that system must display unlimited number of raws, though it is not working. When I am trying to apply filter for CUSTOMER dimension, it shows me some weird FOLDER, that i do not have for sure in my Cube. I think that problem of limited raws is associated with the FOLDERS. It seems that the WebI limits the query based on these folders.
Have anyone faced similar problem? Please help!!

    Hi
If Object LOV's are huge, then system will bundle in the folder's
    Like LOV's , 1 to 10, then
    Folder A : 1- 3
    Folder B:  4- 6
    Folder C: 7- 10
in the search box you can enter customer name then then press find, then you can bale to see customer name.

  • Strange folders into C partition created from alone

    Hi everybody
Lately i found out that there were some folders created in my C disk, that i've never seen before. When i tried to delete them they did not give me permission to do so.
I will give you some of the names of these folders, if that helps in anyway: "62c6f26ad1942dc218d306", "7d79be14a048fd8a8515ecd6123c", "87af31044ce942c8950d9ade775b0023" and it goes on.
If anyone has any idea what these folders are, how they were created and how i can delete them, please help me!!!!
    Excuse my poor english...

    Hi
    > Sometimes, when i shut down my computer and there are upgrades to do, it goes on and on for hours and never shuts down.
During the system update the notebook does not shut down until all updates would be installed and system would be configured this is nothing unusual sometimes it could be possible that updates would not be installed properly and this might be the reason why the hangs in this process but this is not a serious issue

  • ITunes linking to JPGs in strange folders & missing files

I was using iTunes on a PC, via a NAS drive where I keep my music. I want to start using iTunes on a MacBook so pointed iTunes on the Mac to the shared music folder on the NAS. I had the usual exclamation marks on some of the tracks, so went in to the folders to locate the files. A lot are now missing from the folders - i.e. half the albums are gone or complete artists are missing.
The second and most strangest part that I cannot understand is that when I look on some tracks in 'Get Info' and 'Where', some of the files have been moved to obscure locations and are showing as jpgs. When I go into the folder, all there is is JPGs! The music plays fine for these files, however I can't locate the rest of my missing files as they no longer have the correct filenames or even extensions. Example below.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Somehow they got deleted from the PC's hard drive, but iTunes didn't get told about it.
Just find those podcasts in iTunes and delete them.

  • Strange folders appearing on IMAP server

    Hi
Over the past couple of months I have had folders with names like 'nfs000000000c8133a7000000b5' appearing on the top level of my IMAP server. They have appeared once or so per week and I now have 15 - all with names starting 'nfs000000000.....'
They cannot be deleted - i get the error message "This mailbox "nfs000000000c8133a7000000b5" could not be deleted. The IMAP command "DELETE" failed with server error: Mailbox does not exist, or must be subscribed to ..."
    - which I am guessing suggests the problem is on the Mail application side rather than server side.
any ideas how to solve this??
    thanks
