Open the Script Editor or AppleScript Editor in one of the subfolders of Applications and run the following:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is "1" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"

  • How do I twirl open multiple folders in the Finder?

I have a main folder. Inside of the main folder are 55 folders. Inside of EACH of those 55 folders are two files: an audio file and a video file. I need to copy all of the audio files to another drive. What I want to do (in my main folder, in list view) is twirl open all 55 folders, select all 55 of the audio files, and copy them over to my other drive.
Is there a way to do this? Or am I just going to have to manually twirl open each of the 55 folders?
(I'm at work, where I'm using Mountain Lion on a Mac Pro. But I have Mavericks at home.)
(And, yes, I'm aware of the irony that it has taken longer to submit this question than it would have taken just to manually twirl open each folder, which is what I'm going to do after submitting this. But knowing the answer to this will be REALLY good to know for future reference! Thank you.)

Select all the folders and then press the Command and right arrow keys.

  • Can't move ANY documents or folders in the Finder!

    Please help...
I have 10.5.1, luckily, when logged in as myself as a user the computer operates normally, when logged in as my wife she (or I) cannot move any document or folder ANYWHERE not on the desktop, from a flash drive, from any folder... I even created a 3rd user (all are listed as admins) and right from the start- I can't move files using that user either!
Doesn't matter if I use trackpad or the mouse. I already ran the disk utility to fix permissions. Any other ideas?

same problem here... I have two accounts on my MBP one for me and one for my sister. I did a clean install of Leopard and then transfered back all my files. My account works fine but when me (or my sis) are in her account we cant edit any file without my username and password and it's getting really annoying.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanx

  • How to Open a Specific Folder in the Finder via Shortcut Key

I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere, so sorry for not finding it...
Is it possible to assign a shortcut key to open a specific folder with Automator or AppleScript? There are 4-5 commonly used folders buried 10-11 levels deep on a server and I'd love to have a shortcut key to open those particular folders in the Finder.
Could you give me some assistance?
    Thanks!

QuickKeys may work, or you can look on http://www.versiontracker.com or http://www.macupdate.com for other alternatives.
Another option is to create aliases to those folders and store the aliases in a local folder which you can place on your Dock, the Finder window sidebar or toolbar.

  • How do I view only the desktop with icons and the finder?

I have a hot corner set up to show the desktop.. in Snow Leopard when I exposed the desktop and then clicked on the finder in the dock *just* the finder would show.
Now, with Lion, when I click on the finder it comes into view but all the other open applications come sweeping back in hiding the desktop.
Can I change this back to the way it was before? Or is there another sneaky quick way to show only the desktop and the finder? Set up an entirely different "desktop" in mission control dedicated only to having nothing open in it?
In short: I need a fast way to drag icons from the desktop into folders in the finder. Also, this is driving me nuts.
thanks to anyone who can help.

If you can see a patch of Desktop, with a program (any program other than Finder) window active, hold down both Option and Command and click that patch of Desktop. This will auto-hide all windows for all other programs and switch focus to the Finder/Desktop at the same time.
This works when going from any active program to another, except that the Desktop itself will not get hidden (open Finder folders will get hidden).
To bring a program's windows back to visible status, just click the program's icon in the Dock. For open Finder windows which are hidden, just click the Desktop (plain click).
If you want to hide the windows of just one program, with it the active program hold down just the Option key and click in the window of another program (the Desktop or a folder window counts for this purpose). All windows of the original program will be hidden, and focus will switch to the second program.

  • Finder: scrolling in windows causing the finder to hang

    Hi everyone
Since about a week or two I experience a very strange behaviour of the finder. While scrolling in a window the scrolling will stall and hang for about one minute. Cursor is changing to spinning beach ball.
All other apps are unaffected and can be used. Only finder windows are affected which is very unpleasant when searching for a file....
Tried to restart the finder > no change
Quit all other apps > no effect
Restart the computer > makes the problem disappear for a while but it will return shortly
Anyone has the same issue or better: knows a solution to this?
    Thanks
    Andrew

Found a possible reason: Synology Cloud Station Version 3.0-3005
When pausing the sync everything goes back to normal. Switching sync on problems reappear immediately.
There is no fix on Synolgies Website yet. My work around is to sync only when I need to and pausing sync (you don't have to quit the app) and switching it on while I do not work on the computer.

  • Aftermath of trashing Time Machine backups in the Finder

One of my users responded to a TM message saying that it was running out of disk space by going to the Backups.backupdp folder of the TM volume and dragging several of the oldest folders into the Finder Trash (it's a mistake they won't likely make again...). I know how to use a Terminal command to empty the Trash, but here are my questions:
-- Is the TM backup now irrevocably corrupted and unreliable?
-- If so, the only option is to wipe the drive and start a new TM backup, correct?
-- If so, the data loss will be any files that were part of the very original TM backup, that were subsequently deleted by the user, correct?
    Thanks!

Possible, but doubtful. In theory, nothing should be wrong, since only the timestamped folder and a zillion hard links were deleted, but sometimes there are problems.
Repair them, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
It would be a good idea to then force a "deep traversal," where TM compares everything currently on the system to the backups, to be sure everything current is backed-up. You can usually do that by just starting up from the Install disc.
-- If so, the only option is to wipe the drive and start a new TM backup, correct?
Yup. Most likely, most individual items could be restored; entire backups could probably be restored; but it's entirely unpredictable.
-- If so, the data loss will be any files that were part of the very original TM backup, that were subsequently deleted by the user, correct?
    There's no predicting it.

My images will not show in the Finder Pictures folders, but just display as jpeg thumbnails.  I have to open each one to see what photo it is.  This has just recently started to happen.

I made sure the 'Show Icon Preview' box was checked.  This is about all I can do, really, Frank, as i don't know enough about the workings of these machines to start fiddling about.
Strangely the images show as previews in some folders, yet not in others, even though they come from the same sources (my camera and my phone).

The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link

  • How many files can the Finder move at a time between folders?

I have about 45000 files to move from one folder to another. Trying to do it in one jump by highlighting them all and trying to drag them froze the Finder.
What would be the maximum in a single jump?

I don't think it can move 45,000 files at once, in folders or not.
Finder seems to build lists of files to move (in memory), and does not behave well when the list gets too big.
I suggest you try moving them in batches of fewer than 4000 files at once.

What did you do to get them synced to the Cloud.  Would that procedure help me get my favorites synced to my iPad2?

  • Hello, starting with today I have a strange problem: all events are correctly shown in the finder but in FCP-X there`s`none and every time I open it creates a new event. What is wrong?

Hello, starting with today I have a strange problem with Final Cut Pro X: all events are correctly shown in the finder but in FCP-X there`s`none and every time I open it creates a new event. What is wrong?

    Here`s the screenshot.
    But anyway:
The drive is Makintosh HD from my Macbook and it is shown in the event mediathek and in the projects. Since I`ve recognized this problem I installed FCPX again and consequently the event and project directory created by FCPX is where it should be and it shows all the test events including it`s files.
So what happens? Opening FCPX you see only one event and that a new empty event. All previous events are not shown there even if you can see them in the finder. So if you import again the clips they are in this new event library. After closing correctly FCPX and reopening there again is nothing than an new and empty event. What it does is that it recognized that i.e. there are events with previous numbers and so it creates an new one with the next available counting number.
If you want to open one event from the finder it by clicking to the file it opens FCPX but it says it cannot open the clicked file.

Lightroom 5.7.1, Yosemite OS X - Synchronise Folder function doesn't work in Lr.
Is there a compatibility issue? I can see the folders/images in Finder but when trying to synchronise folders in Lr it does not recognise that there are any images and therefore unable to import to catalogue. Anyone has any idea how to make it work. Thanks a lot.

    Hi Elba,
Thank you very much for your reply. Not sure, however, that we are talking about the same problem.
I am trying to perform the same function in Lr that I have been doing for many years in the past and has only been a problem in the last few days (possibly coinciding with upgrading to Yosemite, trying to find out whether that is the problem)
I am not intending to sync any files with Creative Cloud but only trying to use 'Synchronize Folder' function in Lr. Normally, I would right click on a particular folder in Lr catalogue and click on that function to check that the Lr Catalogue is perfectly matching my drives where the original photos are actually stored.
The problem that I only started to encounter is that I can see the files on the actual drives but they do not appear in my Lr Catalogue and they are completely invisible to Lr. I simply can not get Lr to recognise them and then import them to catalogue.
If for example, I export images to Ps and then save and close them, they do appear on my drive but are invisible to Lr and I can't get them imported into the catalogue. Import to folder also not producing any results as they are still invisible to Lr.
Completely baffled by it. Any idea what could be the reason?
    Kind regards,
    Nik

Do you see anything on the TV?
If you just see your desktop, then your MacBook is defaulting to extended display mode. Try pressing the Command + F1 keys to see if you get the menu bar and other icons.
